New Capitalists: Law, Politics, and Identity Surrounding Casino Gaming on Native American Land

This case study examines the impact of casino gaming on Native American reservations, and also explores why the idea of "rich Indians" and their participation in corporate America disrupts dominant assumptions and attitudes about indigenous peoples, their cultural authenticity, and their place in mainstream urban society. Taking an anthropological approach to studying gaming on Indian reservations, the case study explores the implications and challenges of historically marginalized peoples now participating in a corporate entertainment industry. The study raises broader questions about the nature of capitalism and the enduring stability of predominant cultural constructs about Indians that have dominated the country's political and economic arenas. By linking gaming with tourism, what is occurring within the United States is comparatively discussed with similar developments in Canada, Australia, and Mexico where native peoples are increasingly demanding greater rights to participate in the formal institutions and governments of modern western societies. Using extensive interviews with tribal elders, employees of reservation casinos, Las Vegas casino operators, and a broad spectrum of the California public, the book will serve to: 1. Introduce readers to the legal, political, economic and cultural tensions surrounding casino operations on Native American reservations. 2. Explore why gaming has become such a politically and emotionally charged issue. 3. Emphasize how these tensions existing between Indian and non-Indian communities are representative of wider cultural conflicts and identity politics increasingly confronting many countries.

This book would have been really useful to me when I was writing my thesis, but she was writing this at the same time I was doing my research, so the timing was off. I was flattered when emailed me to get a copy of it. Somehow she knew about it only a few weeks after it was submitted. I was hoping she would cite me in a future book, but so far she hasn't. Maybe I need to work on my writing.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the subject, but doesn't know the origins of, or the legal aspects of Indian gaming.

It is just a masterpiece. This book raises more important questions about the nature of capitalism to America. The book tells about the games that the Indians played. This book inspired me to start playing in < href="https://lightning-link-slot.com/how-t.... After all, just as wealthy Indians were able to make fortunes, so I was able to make my annual income in a week. I definitely recommend the book for reading.

Some valuable and thought provoking social/legal history of Native Americans/Native American Casinos here is undermined by a judgmental approach to local criticism of real problems brought to communities including my own, to which a chapter is devoted, by adjacent Casinos: crime, traffic, 24-hour traffic noise, and massive construction at odds with community planning and zoning, with no requirements for or offers of mitigations for nearby neighborhoods. The author discounts opposition to Casinos by assuming racism, elitism, nimbyism, saying if we don't like Las Vegas-style businesses it must be because we don't like "rich Indians," not considering that what we don't like is rural beauty turned into something very urban, by our neighbors who seem not to care, in their need for success and respect, that we all live together here even if their land is sovereign and ours is not. Dr. Darian-Smith mischaracterizes the area immediately surrounding our local Casino, describing "large strip malls" and "supermarkets" but they are not in our town, nor has new construction recently "boxed in" the reservation. I realize this book was written in 2004, but not much has changed in our neighborhood except for increasing crime, traffic, noise and the Casino Resort's 12 story tower. I am glad the tribe has achieved success, most of us are, but I wish that "success" did not threaten my safety, disrespect my attempts to voice concerns, or loom over my home. Perhaps now, 2016, the author, continuing her research, understands that.
