Consciousness, doctors, scientists, artists, and plant lovers unite!!
I absolutely enjoyed this book! Let me tell you, this author seems like a powerhouse of wisdom. What we classify as Medicine in today's western world is not like in the Jungle, yet Nature is still around us, happening all of the time, in the stuff around us too, whether we notice it or not. What makes this book dazzling and exciting is the magical way the author answers to the universe. When you are called on a quest of all-time meaning, and say yes.

This story taught that Sorcery happens with or without us knowing too, and we as a society in 2021, have to make ourselves more wise to that. We cannot be naive or ignorant to our senses any longer. We have to open up to the idea that lying and manipulation is also a form of sorcery and to no longer accept it into our daily experience, whether from the radio or the news, to the food we eat or to the music we listen to. Otherwise we have forgotten our responsibility to our core nature, and that would be trouble.

In this story, when he is betrayed, the way it all goes down, I would wonder how someone trusts ever again after that.

At one point in our lives, we have all put full trust into someone, and felt crushing betrayal. It all seems trivial when the terror gets into our dreams though. To be chased, even in dream space, unable to sleep, to be dripping with fear at every moment, the way the body and mind would suffer. It is not something that I would like to experience, and to imagine it is chilling. Hamilton Souther brought courage and the totality of himself to see the shaman apprenticeship through, despite doubt showing up many times. It seems like he has wonderful mentors who anchor him near and afar through this journey too. We can be that change inside our own selves too. To see that we are never alone. To seek out teachers that can help us answer our calling.

The author gives brilliant visuals of the jungle experience, especially emotions that rise up when he hunts monkeys and other animals for the first time. He paints the description of Peruvian culture and community as mysterious and testing, and at the same time inclusive and adaptable.

What this book also helped me realize me over the past few months, is the idea that what is classified as medicine is everywhere too. Medicine is in the plants, we just have to search it out to understand it. Medicine is even in the meaningful moments. In the daily rituals. Medicine is when we see what we are made of. Medicine is in the test and deliciousness of when things really work out. Medicine is in truth. Our bodies have Medicine. How miraculous is that?

This book calls on me to ask: What am I made of, what aspect of life have I been missing out on, and have we all been blinded/muted this whole time?

We are pieces of a puzzle, and each piece has a whole world in it. We are all in this story.
