Warp Riders #1

Belly of the Beast

Rate this book
What happens when you learn you’re not the biggest, baddest thing in the galaxy? Sadira and her team were about to find out the hard way.

Tracking their dangerous prey across distant solar systems was tricky, latching onto traces of the hostile ship’s fading warp energy as it lead them on a wild goose chase. But this time when they exited warp something was different. Something was out there. Big. Waiting. And it was the likes of which none of the crew had ever imagined.

Racing the clock in a desperate fight for survival, Sadira and her team found themselves pushed to the limit and beyond. But there was simply no other choice. They would succeed, or their mission would fail. And failure meant a fate worse than mere death.

The more I read of this series, the more I love it. The series began with a short novella and it was definitely enough to pique my interest, but this full novel was very cool and reminded me of a cross between Star Trek and Lord of the Flies. In this story, Sadira and her crew have been sucked up by what is essentially a space whale, except it's enormous. At least miles and miles in length and width. Without giving out much about the story, they are stuck in this "whale" with many other ships from a ton of other races, planets, systems, etc. The entire story is the crew trying to figure out what they're in, whether there are any other people alive, and how they might try getting out.

What I love about this series are the variety in the characters, including an AI ship, a cyborg, a four-armed species with eyes in the back of their head (Earth's allies in a great war where they fought off a common enemy), and even a mascot, not to mention a large variety of other sentient beings. I love the dialog and the mix of action, adventure, mystery, science, and humor and found I didn't want to stop reading this book. In fact, this book contains a preview of the next book and I couldn't help myself and had to start the next book. I previously read this author's Space Assassin series and like this series, it took me a little adjustment with the first book to adjust to the quirkiness of the books, but by the second book, I became really invested in the crew's stories and well being. This is turning out to be similar and I am looking forward to continuing with the rest of these books!

Problems Can Grow Very Big In Space

The intrepid Warp Riders crew has gained some new members and set out on an ambitious mission of exploration. While warping to a distant point in space, tiny choices compound to create one fine mess of an unexpected situation. The skills of Captain Perez and each crew member, including Holly, the ship's AI, will be stretched to extraordinary lengths to get out of this one.

I love the world building the author has done in this book. It made me feel entirely immersed in it as the crew pulled every trick out of the proverbial hat to overcome what seemed like insurmountable obstacles. Captain Sadira Perez is a perfect captain: part calm negotiator, part badass supersoldier.

I was glad to get this volume of the series as a gift. Scott Baron writes in an easy style that translates tech speak into fairly straightforward English, conjuring up an altogether worthy example of great sci fi. The story line would easily translate to the screen, it's that vivid.

Be careful what you ask for.
When you want to find new alien life, you may get more than you bargained for.
This was so creative of a plot, I loved it. There is a good variety of characters that you continue to learn more about as the find themselves in the Belly of the Beast.
There is a lot of fun and witty dialogue, then there is also suspense, intrigue and mystery as well as sadness. The creative writing along with an excellent flow kept me engaged from beginning to end. This is a full length novel that will keep you hooked on the adventures of the Warp Riders.
I have read several of this authors books now, and I have never been disappointed. This is the second book in this series, it is a stand alone story, but you will really enjoy starting from book one. I do not want to give any of the story away so I will not talk about the plot.
And in case you did not notice the covers, I just love them they are awesome. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

So, reasons I gave it four stars. It completely sucked me in. I love this crew and their interactions together. The writing is humorous and exciting and just pulls you in. The plotline moves along nicely with some fun twists here and there. I think I clocked in at less than 2 hours to read it, granted, I am a fast reader.

Why you didn't get 5, Mr. Scott Baron...the first four chapters or so (and I am HOPING it's just because it's an ARC and you intend to fix it.) you kept repeating yourself, and repeating yourself...and it just got very...repetitious and I wanted to throw things, but I like my Kindle, so I refrained. There was one passage that kept coming up about the ship, and I was like...we know this, we just heard it last chapter, and the book before this one. I am hoping he fixes it, because otherwise, this book was excellent.

So the gang is baaack!
Yep things go sideways hella quickly and they end up stuck in a precarious situation most likely the most precarious situation to be stuck in if you're a space faring band of misfits.
It's tough to explain their situation without spoiling anything.
Suffice to say that they not only have their work cut out but there's also a fair amount of...
This is tough!!
Just read it, if you enjoyed the first Deep Space Boogie then I can't imagine you not enjoying this outing.
I mean there's a military cyborg who is probably my favourite character. So much favouritism is put his way.. Erm. I've actually forgot his name.
But that's how my endearment is, I only forget your name if i like you.. Oooh that's a keeper!

After reading the prequel short story of the Warp Riders series I was seriously excited about the first long novel. Woooooowwww it was amazing. The story felt like a Star Trek episode but instead of Picard or Janeway we got Sadira. She is one hell of a captain and a really great main character. The story is intensly focused on the present, there aren’t any flashbacks or much info about the character’s life’s but who cares. The whole book is full of action and adventure and fighting and fun and Incan’t wait to start the next book.
I hope there will be more action, more fun and much much more alien lifeforms.
Scott Baron’s books are highly recommended.

This second book in the series about a crew on a space ship was surprising in that it was almost totally about the crew on the ground. As expected from the blurb and cover image the space ship gets swallowed by some large creature and the crew somehow have to survive.

Without giving away any spoilers, a lot of what happens is predictable or even predicated on the physical conditions of the various crew members. A good example is Goonara, the typical forgetful scientist. It was totally obvious that she would wonder away and get into trouble. For most of this book the broad brush strokes are very obvious and the details can often be guessed at.

None the less, although it wasn't what I was expecting, it was still enjoyable.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

This is Book Two of the Warp Riders series by Scott Barron. This book is even better than the first book of the series. I don’t know how he comes up with all the ideas, wide cast of characters (such as the pink cat in book one?), and come up with descriptions and personalities for all of them. This book has a great continuation of the story line from book one, plus action and adventure, making new friends from all over the universe, yet all found in one spot.

I highly suggest getting this book if you enjoy Sci-fi action books with great characters!

Really liked this book. Great continuation of the series after the prequel. We follow the crew who have a new and bigger enemy to fend off and draining resources. Loved the character interactions and development and the plot kept you flipping pages endlessly to see what happens next! Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. Book 2 definitely took on a more serious tone, more unknown scenarios, wondering if your favorite characters will survive, but still moments of lighthearted banter between the characters. I like that level of mental relief from the struggles of survival. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Enjoying this series to date. Survival is not so easy with Aliens wishing to do you harm. A few twists and turns really keeps you going, turning the pages to see what happens next.

A great SCI-FI story

Highly recommended

Slides into Fantasy

Not sure what happened or why, but the logical progression found in the first book is set aside and this installment is a series of fantasy adventures, without much logical or reasonable science to support them. Eventually I found the action less than believable and dropped out of the series completely.
