I love moments of synchronicity, where paths converge, and something is placed in my lap that is precisely what I need right when I need it. That’s how this book came to me. The Witch’s Name is one of Llewellyn’s new releases that I know will have a permanent place on my shelf.

Why pick a witch name? To separate your magickal life from your mundane life, protect yourself from being outed as a witch to your family or place of business, or perhaps the name you picked many years ago no longer fits who you are now. You might even need to name something equally as important: familiars, servitors, or magickal objects such as athames. This book doesn't just provide a long list of names like a baby book to choose one. This book takes you on an exploration deep within, using guided meditations on how to tap into your inner power.

Choosing a name is a definitive moment in the life of anyone who practices the craft. Words have power, and it’s essential to choose a name that aligns with our magickal identities or intentions, and Storm has written a guide to show us the way. The book includes exercises to open your spirit to be receptive to energies that can help your quest, explaining how to use journaling to write down meaningful things, explore new ideas, and dissect your dreams. The Witch’s Name includes many examples of names, drawing from plants, crystals, animals, dream work, and mythology to give examples of areas where we can draw inspiration.

Once you have chosen a name, Storm completes the journey by going in-depth to teach you how to incorporate this name into your own unique identity through ritual. By the end of the book, you will be able to craft an identity that feels like a perfect extension of you.

A solid book on considerations related to choosing a craft name, Storm Faerywolf's "The Witch's Name" covers a lot of ground in not many pages: reasons for choosing a name, contexts one might use (or not use) such a name (or names!), sources of inspiration (constellations, animals, mythology, deities, legends, etc.), exercises to try to find elements of one's name or see how a particular name feels, and additional considerations like signatures and self-protection. I would describe this, in craft terms, as intermediate; there is definitely the presumption here that the reader is familiar with some magical basics (protective work, grounding and centering, raising power) but no expectation that the reader do these things in any particular way. Inevitably, some parts of the book will be more relevant to any reader than others - for example, I don't work with the 'three part self' but the divination and sigil-crafting sections are highly relevant to my practice. I appreciate the author's mindfulness re: cultural appropriation, pronunciation of languages, and related issues. I would absolutely read more from Faerywolf based on this book, and I know some of these exercises will be very useful to me as I work on crafting a public-facing name for some writing/publishing I hope to do.

**Arc from NetGalley**

I wish that I had this book when I was a fledgling witch as the premise of a magical name was something that I struggled with finding. Storm Faerywolf covers the concept of magical names wonderfully in this book. The first part is about why and how to connect with your spiritual side to start your journey and it continues with giving the reader seeds for places to start looking for inspiration. Though is by no means just a checklist of various mythical, magical, and natural words. It gives you the seeds to really start your own research and really encourages you to do the digging. While also offering a guiding hand.

While this book is great for beginners, does assume that you have the very basics down like grounding and cleansing, as many of the exercises require it. So while I wouldn't consider this a witchy 101 book, it is something nice that can be grabbed alongside them.

Well-written, fascinating guide that covers a unique topic that I haven't really seen too much in other witchcraft books. I found it hard to stay engaged throughout, but I feel content in my identity of magical power. I believe that this book can be helpful to many other witchcraft practitioners out there, and I want to read more by this author.

I wish I'd had this book years ago! I love how Storm approaches this subject, with friendliness and care and plenty of contextual assistance. I was particularly delighted by the exercises on numerology, which led me to find that my chosen name, unlike my birth name, matches my life path number, which is incredibly affirming. Overall, a great guide to any magickal practitioner who is interested in choosing and integrating with a new magickal name.

The Witch's Name is a really in-depth book about finding a magical name. It has lots of history and information you probably would not easily find elsewhere. I found it very informative and interesting with tons of great ideas. It is definitely worth a read if you are interested in witchcraft or just curious to read more on the subject.

This is different than most books I have read and I really enjoyed it. While I have not made a decision whether to have a magical name or not, it was a great book to help guide me if/when I decide to choose one. The history and ideas in here really help guide you to find the name that is right for you, just as you answered the call to practice the way that is right for you. I recommend this book whether you are looking for a name or just some history, you’ll find it one of the best reads i awhile.

Very interesting book, awesome inspiration, and it will give you more awareness about this important teaching. Explanations about many themes are very lucid and fresh. But due to many topics some minor additional exploration will be needed. This could very easily be one of those "life changing books", if one is into the occult, of course.

The Witch’s Name by Storm Faerywolf is an insightful and transformative guide that delves into the process of selecting and embodying a magical identity. Unlike many books that treat a magical name as a simple title or decoration, Faerywolf’s approach reveals it as a powerful tool for personal transformation, protection, and empowerment. This book goes far beyond a list of suggested names—it offers readers a deeply reflective and practical approach to discovering the magical persona that resonates with their truest self.

From the outset, Faerywolf emphasizes that a magical name is not just a label but a form of identity magic. Each time you speak or are addressed by your chosen name, you cast a spell, shaping yourself in alignment with the forces you wish to embody. With this in mind, The Witch’s Name doesn’t rush the process. Faerywolf takes the reader on a journey of introspection, offering meditations, rituals, and journaling exercises that allow witches to explore the deeper layers of their identity before settling on the right name. His thoughtful guidance ensures that readers will not only choose a name that sounds magical but one that feels deeply connected to their soul’s path.

The book’s strength lies in its depth and range of resources. Faerywolf draws from a variety of cultural, mythological, and magical traditions to explore the history and significance of names in witchcraft and spirituality. This broader context helps the reader understand the weight and potential behind a magical name, framing it not just as a personal choice but as a declaration of one’s magical identity. Whether drawing inspiration from animals, plants, astrology, or tarot, the tools Faerywolf provides are rich and varied, allowing readers to craft a name that reflects their unique strengths and magical inclinations.

Faerywolf’s writing is both engaging and accessible, with a conversational tone that makes complex spiritual concepts feel approachable. He balances the mystical with the practical, providing clear steps on how to choose, claim, and embody your witch name. His exercises, such as visualizations and journaling prompts, are designed to help readers connect with their intuition and uncover the aspects of their identity that will guide them toward the perfect name. This interactive approach makes The Witch’s Name more than just a guide—it’s a workbook for magical self-discovery.

One of the highlights of the book is the inclusion of contributions from other prominent voices in the magical community. Writers like Mat Auryn, Phoenix LeFae, and Laura Tempest Zakroff share their own perspectives on magical names, providing valuable insight into how this practice can vary across different traditions and personal experiences. These contributions add depth to the book, reminding readers that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to choosing a magical name. Instead, Faerywolf encourages each witch to explore their unique relationship with magic and self-expression.

The Witch’s Name also addresses the long-term significance of your chosen identity. Faerywolf discusses how a magical name can evolve over time, reflecting changes in one’s spiritual journey and personal growth. This perspective encourages flexibility and self-awareness, reminding readers that the magical name is not a static tool but a living part of their practice, one that may shift as they move through different phases of life and magical work.

I recently read “The Witch’s Name: Crafting Identities of Magical Power” by Storm Faerywolf and I honestly don’t know what I was expecting with this book but I was excited nonetheless. I also invited the author, Storm Faerywolf who himself uses a magical name, onto the Witch Talks Podcast so stay tuned for that future episode!

What I liked:
This book is split into three parts which are
- Part 1: What’s in a name?
- Part 2: Inspiration, Seeds and Sources
- Part 3: The Choosing and the Weaving
My favourite was Part 1: What’s in a name?
Storm takes you one a journey through history, culture and language and it was fascinating. I particularly loved hearing about Storms own naming journey and the personal stories interspersed throughout.

On page 26 of chapter one there is a section on “Speak of the devil (and he doth appear)” and how names can be used as taglock with specific examples throughout history which tickled my fancy in particular.

On page 73 there is an exercise called ‘Elemental Balancing’ on transforming negativity with water and alchemy and oh my did it inspire me! I was also surprised at the inclusion of exercises throughout the book as Storm moves you through the necessary steps to finding your own magical name.

Under Rites of Appellation on page 209, Storm mentions using the letters within your name as forms of protection, almost like a sigil when signing your name on things and WOW this was mind-blowing and something I will be taking on. It’s one of those things you read, face palm, and say “now why didn’t I think of that?”

What I disliked:
Whilst Part 2 includes a varied list of names and their meanings I think I wanted more, maybe suggestions on name pairings or details around the numerology of each suggestion. I also wanted more personal stories, anecdotes, and examples. Basically, seeing it in action!

Since I also don’t plan on changing my current name, once I got past the excitement of the first part (history and knowledge around words and names) and it got to the ‘choosing’ part my interest started to dwindle but that’s not a fair criticism of the book itself, rather me as a reader. I guess the advice here is to read it IF and WHEN you’re ready for a magickal name.

Do I recommend it?
Yes I do as long as you are planning to change your name. This would also be helpful for those seeking a business name, and hell I was even considering some of the suggestions as future baby or pet names! I can’t wait to chat further with Storm Faerywolf on the Witch Talks Podcast.

Storm Faerywolf’s The Witch’s Name isn’t just about picking a magical name—it’s a journey into discovering parts of yourself you didn’t even know were there. Faerywolf does a beautiful job of showing how a name can be a powerful anchor for transformation, grounding your magical identity while helping you step more fully into your own power. This isn’t a list of names; it’s a guide to crafting something that resonates with your soul.

Through rituals, journaling prompts, and meditations, Faerywolf offers real tools to help you uncover and claim a name that feels both mystical and uniquely yours. I loved the inclusion of insights from practitioners like Mat Auryn and Phoenix LeFae, which added richness to the journey. If you’ve ever wondered how a name could shape your practice and bring you closer to your true self, this book is the perfect companion. Storm’s approach is thoughtful, gentle, and empowering, making this a must-read for any Witch ready to embody their magical persona.

A book that grabs you from start to finish. In a simple but effective way, the author explains various methods of self-discovery, how to know who we are, where we are going, and how best to describe this in something as seemingly simple as a name. Full of anecdotes and ideas, it's a useful book for those new to witchcraft as well as those who have been in it for a long time.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with understanding the process of adopting a magical name. It's something that confused me ever since I was a teenager and I wish this had been on the shelves back then! It's full of journal prompts, exercises, and magical workings to know yourself better so you might be able to take on the task of naming yourself. Most importantly, it explains the process in a kind and straightforward manner. I'm still working through the book but I've read all of it and am excited to continue using it as a guide on my own journey. This was also incredibly well written and an enjoyable read.

In Storm Faerywolf's The Witches Name, he manages to convey not just the importance of such a journey as choosing your own magical name, but also the little ways such an act can bring you joy and solace. Having recently embarked on a path to legally change my own name, this book did a fantastic job at helping me feel justified and gave me the strength to continue. I was able to truly understand my name on a much deeper level thanks to The Witches Name. Though the book has more "reference" style writing contained within, it was an invaluable experience at helping me grow and take another huge step on the path to becoming the person I want to be.

It’s a really good read for beginners and experienced alike! The exercises are simple enough to not be overwhelming for beginners, but easily adapted or added to if you want to make it your own. Although the book is about finding your craft name, it can be used for so much more than that. It’s even a great read for those who don’t identify with their birth name but don’t know where to go. The exercises are also great for inner working and self acceptance even if you aren’t looking for a name. Don’t let the name fool you, this rose by any other name would definitely smell as sweet.

Whilst reading this book, I noticed how much I do NOT know yet about witchcraft. How much is involved in choosing the magical name, to primarily, feel comfortable with it and secondly, to draw the power and confidence that this name may give us while following this path.
I'm glad I read it, because even if I had already chosen a name, it still didn't feel "right", and reading this book helped me realize why I was picking that name in particular and to feel most of all, really sure that yes, the name I chose represents me.

As a solitary witch who has felt drawn to find my magical name lately, this book was a wonderful journey!
Storm covers the process and importance of a magical name, as well as provides some sources of inspiration for your name. He even interviewed other authors and people from the magical community and included their personal anecdotes regarding their naming process.

If you’re curious or have any interest in integrating your magical name into your work, then this book is a fantastic choice.

What's in a name? Shakespeare thought it was important Many witches also think it is and sometimes find it hard to pick one.that fits who they are.. This book shows how to use magic, meditation and other steps to find that perfect name. Witch names have power. Well written and needed for every library. I received this book from Net Galley and Llewellyn Worldwide for a honest review.

When I began reading this book I was not sure I could ever have another name other than the one I was given. Nothing ever fit or felt right. Storms book is very informative on the importance and power a name can have and kept me interested the whole way through. With the exercises given and the many inspirations to pull from my name came to me by the time I finished the book. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to develop their magical persona. 10 outta 10!!

I picked this book up on a whim and I liked it well enough. Personally, I didn’t have any practical interest in the subject of this book. I thought it had lots of fun and interesting information though. If finding a magical name/identity is something you’re interested in, this is a great book to read. The writing was easy to follow along and the way chapters and sections were structured made it a pretty easy read as well.

I received an eArc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really interesting and intriguing read. I especially enjoyed all the historical information in regards to naming, as well as the different sections dedicated to inspiration, some of which also had historical meaning and background information. I read through this quite quickly due to my thirst for knowledge, but I intend to go through it again more slowly, and see if the same things resonate with me.

I am so grateful to have recieved a digital copy of this from Netgalley, but I would definitely prefer a physical copy in future, so that I could turn to it on a frequent basis.
