In a time of desperation, Lorena Halliday's father sells her into service to wealthy Lord Fairfield. After years of servitude and unwanted sexual advances, Lorena finds the courage to run away, only to be accosted by a man with a knife.

Standing on the roof of his home, Demetri witnesses the attack and goes to the young woman's rescue. After dispatching her assailant, Demetri takes the unconscious woman to an inn and procures a room for her, tucking her into bed. She is young and beautiful and her blood calls to him like no other.

Needing to see her again, Demetri returns to the inn and offers the lovely redhead a position in his home as his housekeeper. Desperate and with nowhere else to go, Lorena accepts. She soon discovers that her mysterious benefactor hides many secrets. Nevertheless, Lorena finds herself falling in love with a man who lives In the Dark of the Night.

I found this disturbing initially, because the vampire had access to the helpless female when she was sleeping, and couldn't resist her blood. l I felt like that was dishonest. But, I read along and discovered some of the story was interesting. Certainly the vampire hunters, and the "good guys" not being good guys. And if there ever was a way to show how a terrible father might behave, without calling him terrible, this was it.

I dropped a few stars for the sex scenes--too many of them and after awhile it got a little boring (not how one wants sex scenes to become) and...well, the best thing the female main character has going for her is that she's beautiful. Oh and she likes to ride horses. So, while it was a good bit of a jaunty read, there were some elements that weren't super.

Predictable

This book basically adheres to the usual vampire trope. Vampire saves girl in distress and is irrevocably drawn to her. Will she accept him once she learns that he is a blood sucking monster? Throw in some evil vampire hunters and other unsavoury characters along with a heroine who is a complete drip and that pretty much sums up this story. The writing is flat and stilted, with one dimensional characters. Definitely not the author’s best work.

Nice flow

The book was a nice read. The storyline flowed well. The plot was repeat......damsel in distress..vampire saves damsel......they fall in love. Although plot was repeat it has a couple decent twist and turns.

I've always enjoyed how this author writes this genre. This one maintains standards and my expectations. Very entertaining, with the risk, understanding and of the life and heart of a vampire and his dedication to his true love's happiness.

This book is entertaining, romantic, exciting, action packed, a Page turner. Haunting, unpredictable, great characters and world building. A delight to read.

I use to be a huge Amanda Ashley fan until all the stories started sounding a like. It was nice to revisit one of her books.
