Robin René Roberts (born November 23, 1960) is an American television broadcaster. Roberts is the anchor of ABC's morning show Good Morning America. After growing up in Mississippi and attending Southeastern Louisiana University, Roberts was a sports anchor for local TV and radio stations. Roberts was a sportscaster on ESPN for 15 years (1990–2005). She became co-anchor on Good Morning America in 2005. She has been treated for breast cancer and for myelodysplastic syndrome.
Though born in Alabama, Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, where she played basketball and tennis, among other sports. She attended Pass Christian High School and graduated as the class of 1979 salutatorian. She is the daughter of Lucimarian Tolliver and Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts. In a 2006 presentation to the assembled student body at Abilene Christian University, Roberts credited her parents as cultivating the "three 'D's: Discipline, Determination, and 'De Lord'." She is the youngest of four, following siblings Sally-Ann, Lawrence, Jr. (nicknamed Butch), and Dorothy. Her father was a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen.
Roberts attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, graduating cum laude in 1983 with a degree in communication. She followed in the footsteps of her older sister Sally-Ann Roberts, an anchor at the CBS affiliate WWL in New Orleans.
She joined ESPN as a sportscaster in February 1990, where she stayed until 2005. She became well known on Sportscenter for her catchphrase, "Go on with your bad self!" Roberts began to work for ABC News, specifically as a featured reporter, for Good Morning America in June 1995. In 2001, Roberts received the Mel Greenberg Media Award, presented by the WBCA. For many years, Roberts worked at both ESPN and Good Morning America, contributing to both programs. During that time, she served primarily as the news anchor at GMA. In 2005, Roberts was promoted to co-anchor of Good Morning America. In December 2009, Roberts was joined by George Stephanopoulos as co-anchor of GMA after Diane Sawyer left to anchor ABC World News. Under their partnership, the Roberts-Stephanopoulos team led Good Morning America back to the top of the ratings; the program became the number-one morning show again in April 2012, beating NBC's Today, which had held the top spot for the previous 16 years.
Roberts is a practicing Christian. In 2007, Roberts was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. She underwent surgery on August 3, and by January 2008 had completed eight chemotherapy treatments, followed by 61⁄2 weeks of radiation treatment.
In 2012, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a disease of the bone marrow. Be the Match Registry, a nonprofit organization run by the National Marrow Donor Program, experienced a 1,800% spike in donors the day Roberts went public with her illness. She took a leave from GMA to get a bone marrow transplant, and went home in October 2012. She returned to GMA on February 20, 2013. Roberts received a 2012 Peabody Award for the program. The Peabody citation credits her for "allowing her network to document and build a public service campaign around her battle with rare disease" and "inspir[ing] hundreds of potential bone marrow donors to register and heighten[ing] awareness of the need for even more donors." ESPN awarded its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Robin Roberts at the 2013 ESPYs.
Good morning, friends! Let’s grab a cup of coffee and get comfy with Robin Roberts. Brighter by the Day with Michelle Burford (Waking Up to New Hopes and Dreams) is coming in March 2022. If you’re a fan of Roberts, early mornings, and need a little extra light in your day, this is the perfect read for you! Roberts shares her faith, positive attitude, challenges, and her all-around sense of love. I like that she’s chosen to send this outlook into the universe. She talks about embracing joy and how we can’t just sit back and expect it to run automatically. It's how we choose our perspective and our mindset. It’s wonderful and refreshing. Her advice on finding your goals and achieving your dreams is inspirational. It’s a sweet little book that will have a prominent place on my coffee table. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did. It's the best way to fill your personal cup as well as your coffee mug.
Uplifting and full of wisdom. This short book was like a hug for a weary soul.
If you have followed Roberts at all, you’ve heard her catch phrase, “Make Your Mess Your Message.” In the midst of great career success, Roberts has had her share of personal battles, many being major health scares. So when she says that there is a way over every hurdle, she’s truly speaking from experience.
Robins’ quintessential warmth radiates through the pages as she shares personal anecdotes about the struggles she’s endured. Self-help books can sometimes feel preachy, but Roberts comes across truly genuine in her desire to help others live the kind of joy-filled life she practices.
This could easily be a super quick read. But I found myself slowly working my way through the chapters, allowing time to reflect and ponder. I think many people will enjoy returning to this book often as a mindset reboot.
I found this book a fresh reminder that optimism isn’t a fly-by-night feeling. It’s a muscle to be strengthened through continual practice.
Roberts narrates the audiobook. So if you’ve ever wanted to have a personal chat with her, this feels like exactly that. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and sit down with her.
Thank you to Robin Roberts, Grand Central Publishing, and MacMillan Audio for the #gifted copy of this book.
I wanted...more from this book. I love the positivity and was encouraged by her perspective, but overall the book is somewhat frothy and surface level. I like Robin Roberts on GMA so that's why I read it (and two of her other books). But this book felt like a PR press release. She glossed over her life and experiences never really revealing anything. As a reader, I feel I was being held at arm's length. Why write a memoir if you're not going to "go there"?
I work in TV and in some ways, this business SUCKS - especially for women. Especially for Black women. Yes, she reached the apex of this career but to pretend it was without an ounce of awful along the way is just completely disingenuous.
Maybe she'll write another book after she's done with GMA and can speak more freely. This was disappointing.
At times, a little hokey and cliche, but overall a positive uplifting message for readers. Loved the memoir driven bits about Roberts’ career and personal battles, wished there was more of this in the book and we went a bit deeper into her life’s story and why she keeps the optimistic outlook despite everything.
I realized reading this book that I knew who she was but didn’t know anything really about her other than that she used to play basketball in college and she was on GMA. In this book she shares a lot of her life’s experience and basically her faith and how she maintained a positive mindset as she was experiencing a lot of blows to her life, career, relationships and health. I understand why she is so well liked and popular she is incredibly humble and personable.
DNF- i might not have been the reader for this book, but i usually read and enjoy self help positivity books.
I thought this book was a bit shallow and honestly a little privileged. Her encouragement of transcendental meditation, a practice that requires a $1000 class to started, seems short sighted to commend so much without realizing the impracticality of most of the readers being able to actually get involved with this. I stopped after chapter 5 because it felt so shallow and surface level happy. I felt like I was being told “manifest joy manifest a relationship look at the bright side and you’ll be happier!!” Without her understanding she lives in a world with a depth of resources most of us do not have at our disposal as average “middle class” Americans.
(I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)
This is a memoir/self-help book by Robin Roberts, the host of Good Morning America. It's full of advice and positivity, mixed with personal stories and experiences the author has gone through - as a successful queer black woman diagnosed first with breast cancer and then with myelodysplastic syndrome.
I honestly didn't know her or anything about her life, so this was quite interesting on that sense. The inspirational advice felt kind of basic/shallow, but maybe that's just me. I usually don't gravitate torwards self-help books, because I don't feel like they work for me. Nevertheless, I think that if you like this type of literature, then maybe this book would be a good fit! From what I've been reading, it seems to have resonated with a lot of people :)
I also listened to the audiobook version, which was very nice and calming. I loved the pacing and the narration style of Robin and I think it's really cool when authors read their own books, especially if they are memoirs.
I’ve been watching Robin Roberts on GMA for years! She’s my go to morning show personality. She’s endured so much over the years from health issues to a natural disaster destroying her home state but she always finds the good. In this book, she makes big matters seem small by encouraging the reader to be optimistic and purposeful. My favorite saying of Robin’s is ‘make your mess your message’. I think of this one often when feeling down and it does ignite a spark in me to turn a situation around. This book is divided into 3 sections: The Joy Mindset, Positive on Purpose & Stronger Than You Know. The chapters are short and you can skip around and read what you need when you need it. I will return to this book for a quick mood adjustment!
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for granting my request for my gifted copy
Robin Roberts is my jam!! And I don’t even watch GMA! Having watched her sessions on MasterClass which honestly hammered home the twin messages of strength & vulnerability with real, raw emotion, I loved reading some of those same stories in print. Roberts’ persona is one of humility & grace with what seems to be a quiet, faith-based strength. Yes, she’s a dynamo in the TV world, but the behind the scenes struggles show they are just as real for her & her family as they would be for anyone. Relatable is the word that comes to mind; pay it forward as a life lesson also. There is nothing contrived about overcoming adversity it’s just putting one foot in front of the other & doing the damn thing!
Not sure how this got on my list. I don't watch TV so I'm not a fan of the author. I'm not a Christian. I don't particularly need this kind of broad advice for the rough patches I get into. But somehow it did manage to be an interesting (and very easy) read. Rating is personal; I fully support the community for rating it more highly.
The best thing I got out of it was a goal that actually applies to me. I'm not letting my fears keep me from realising my dreams... but to "trade cantankerousness for warmth" sounds like something I can set as a goal and develop a plan for.
Maybe it will help if I remember to "interrupt a negative thought with a slightly more cheerful one."
I also really liked the chapter on forgiveness. I'm already good at empathy and have never been the least interested in revenge, but there is one action by one person that rankles. She's probably forgotten it by now; it wasn't that big a deal. So, why am I letting her action make me feel like a victim? Slap some sense into me!
Or, as Roberts says: "Forgiveness isn't about moving on.... It's about moving forward.... You're recognizing resentment as a ball and chain, and deciding to lay it aside."
Now more than ever, we could all use some positive and uplifting words. Robin Roberts is a beloved newscaster who has been on our TVs every morning since 2005. I read this book little by little... reading a few pages each morning. It's a perfect blend of some of Robin's real life experiences mixed with words of encouragement. This is definitely one you'll want to keep close by so you can read it again and again! Pre-order this book now and be inspired daily. Bonus: It's small enough to slip into your work tote or travel luggage!
🗣️ Thank you to @grandcentralpub and @robinrobertsgma for the opportunity to read and review this gifted book. All opinions are honest and my own.
I love Robin on TV and was pleasantly surprised this was an inspirational book for all, not just those who follow a Christian worldview. Her anecdotes had me smiling at times and teary-eyed at others. It's a very quick listen and one I will return to again and again when I need to hear something uplifting. And it was especially appropriate during the Thanksgiving season.
Easy breezy read, I am gliding through it fast. I have books to catalog, and this title caught my attention. "Brighter by the Day" she shares some experiences and how she shined through it, or other people made her day brighter, and liked when she had a chapter "Positive on Purpose, which I say P.O.P." and finished in a couple sittings.
I like how she said "like-mind-thrivers (181)"; two ordeals to face is patience and time. Strength, about being willing to receive to embrace the help, hope, and healing others want to give us. Vulnerability is the gateway to fortitude, and ever-deepening intimacy with those who love is the enduring treasure (180)."
Who doesn’t love Robin Roberts! I wish I could put her in my pocket and pull her out when times are crappy. This is the next best thing. I will reread this over and over again. Optimism is muscle you need to exercise to make it stronger. This book is a great personal trainer!
Another book in the self-held genre that promotes positive thinking as a means of overcoming obstacles and adversity to achieve your goals. The author adds a few bells and whistles to the basic mantra, and a rationale to explain failed efforts to achieve one goals despite adhering to the methodology laid out by the book. Suffice it to say that this variation like many others doesn’t work for most people, and the rationales offered by the author for failure are a means of avoiding blame when a reader who follows the dictums laid out in this book fails to achieve their desired outcome.
I have been a fan of Good Morning America for years and have watched Robin Roberts in awe—the way she speaks with such positivity, humility and joy of life. This is a wonderful book that is full of very interesting insights as she writes of her challenging but uplifting life breaking into the broadcasting industry, dealing with two cancers and her relationship with her girlfriend. This is not a biography per se but more a spoken account of her inspirations. She speaks of ‘her tribe’, those who stood by her during times of turmoil and of the many ‘..isms’ she gleamed from her family and friends. It is a short book and one I had trouble putting down as I highlighted so many lines. I honestly could hear Robin Roberts speaking the words I was reading. My favorite is her quote from Dalai Lama, “When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you many learn something new.”
When asked why I wanted to read an early galley of BRIGHTER BY THE DAY by Robin Roberts - her new book: a guide to instilling hope and optimism into readers’ lives, infusing their days with positivity and encouragement - I knew it was a book meant for me. I’m currently on my fifth month of bed rest, and my mental health is not the greatest, so I’m looking for positivity anywhere I can get it. I thought Roberts’ book might be cute, but I did not expect to find so much joy as I did. Filled with grace, wisdom, and personal anecdotes, I loved taking my time reading this little book.
Okay, I will be the first to tell you I am not a morning person - like I am the biggest grump in the morning you will ever meet, all my encounters with Robin Roberts have never happened live watching GMA because I’m never awake for it. I’ve watched lots of clips after the fact, and I love her personality, which shines so fully in BRIGHTER BY THE DAY. If you have ever watched a Roberts on screen, you see how much she cares, and that passion is imbued tenfold into the pages of this book.
In each chapter, Roberts gives real-life experiences and isn’t afraid to get personal - allowing the reader to know she is human. She also poses questions to make you think and then answers them for herself. I love this aspect because you can choose to answer them in your mind or expand the process and make it a journaling activity, which I did with a few!
This book brought me joy and positivity when I really needed it. It’s small but mighty. I see myself picking it up when I need a reminder that I can get through the day. I think we all could use a reminder like that, don’t you?
BRIGHTER BY THE DAY is out 3/29
Thanks Grand Central Publishing for the gifted book!
This was a very short book that I almost stopped reading at the onset because Roberts basically said it would be a book about how to be more cheery and optimistic. That's pretty much a failed venture for me. Although I'm not a pessimist, I think you have to have a certain type of disposition to look at cancer or the death of loved ones in a positive light. That positive light often involves religion and being a true believer. I don't think I can fully define what I would consider my spirituality and belief in a higher power, but I definitely haven't found much solace in organized religion.
That said, I'm glad I read the book. It wasn't just an advice book, but the book integrated a narrative of Roberts' life, including career failures (that turned into career chances) and her two bouts with life threatening diseases, the second requiring a bone marrow transplant. She wasn't wrong -- in order to go forward, you must cultivate a sense that getting to the next hour or day is in some way meaningful. However, I don't equate that with a manual for cheery optimism. She talked more about "not sweating the small stuff" and the ability to turn something that is negative into something that can be built upon. She also talked about the need to engage even when you don't feel like it because once you stop, you do lose the ability to move forward. I couldn't relate to her cheery optimism and positive perspective on everything. I think that's just her natural disposition. I'm also pretty much a failure at meditation, but understand its beneficial attributes for so many.
Brighter by the Day, a short and sweet book by Robin Roberts filled with encouragement for our good days, bad days, and everything in between. Robin shares the stories of how she got into broadcasting, the opportunities that came her way, all the ones that didn't, and how with faith she kept on trucking. This memoir is filled with antidotes of wisdom she received growing up from her parents, as well as lessons she's learned along the way. I loved how each chapter started with a quote. My favorite being Chapter 13: Vulnerability is Strength, "You are braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think," Christopher Robin says to Winnie-the-Pooh in Pooh's Grand Adventure. Robin shares in the intro that she hopes you'll pick up this book when you need some encouragement, read a chapter in the morning or maybe at night but mostly she hopes it'll bring connection in a time when we need it most. I wasn't too familiar with Robin before reading this and found the writing and her stories uplifting, insightful and filled with hope, even while sharing about her two cancer diagnosis's. She says many times "make your mess your message" which I think is wonderful. We're all going through something, why not have that bring us together rather than further apart. Thank you GrandCentralPub for the gifted copy in exchange for a honest review.
Brighter by the Day was exactly what I needed in my life right now. The messages that Robin Roberts pens in this book are so authentic and uplifting. I am always impressed with how she is able to be so relatable and speak to me from the pages with words that resonate so deeply.
I don't consider myself a person that follows celebrities or public personalities. I always find people I meet in real life to be the ones that I admire the most. However, I have become a follower of Robin Roberts over the last few years. I watched her MasterClass on communication and was drawn in by her positivity, down to earth personality and genuine nature. I then read her book Everybody's Got Something and it just reaffirmed everything I took from her MasterClass. When I heard about Brighter by the Day, I was thrilled. I had another chance to soak up all her brightness and authentic words.
I highly recommend Brighter by The Day for all readers. It is a beautiful reminder of so many real moments in life and how to choose joy for yourself. Brighter by the Day is the kind of book you want to gift to all your friends and family. I've already been sharing with my friends many of Robin's messages that spoke to me. I continue to be inspired by her and know that you will too.
I received this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I also borrowed the audio book from our local library so I could hear Robin read the book in her own voice, which I believe, enhanced my reading of the book.
Big thank you to Grand Central Publishing for my gifted copy!
I really don’t read a lot of non-fiction (even though I should) and I’m even more unfamiliar with self-help books. Because of this, I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t relate to the content or that the subject matter would be slow.
I’m happy to say that I enjoyed this one and found it to be so inspirational! There were so many sections where I had to stop for a second just to soak in the message that the author was trying to send home.
I absolutely loved all the anecdotes from the author’s personal life. Her relationship with her mother was expressed in such a beautiful way and it made me a bit emotional. I just wanted to sit down and have a nice cozy chat with my mama. (Lucky for me, we get to do that every Saturday when my parents come to visit!)
There are various references to God and faith throughout the book. This isn’t a bad thing of course, but I wanted to make that known because some people prefer that and others aren’t as comfortable with it. As someone who was raised in a Christian home, they were words of comfort for me.
I thought this was such a beautiful book by Robin Roberts and I’m so grateful that I was given the opportunity to read it. This one comes out at the end of the month!
Many people in the U.S. are familiar with Robin Roberts as she is the face of a popular morning TV show. I don’t usually watch morning TV but was aware of some of Roberts’ story and the challenges she has faced in the past.
In this book, Ms. Roberts is looking forward to each day with hope and optimism. She shares her beliefs and ways of approaching daily life in these pages; she was encouraged to do so by those with whom she was in daily touch during Covid.
The book is divided into sections including The Joy Mindset. Positive on Purpose and, Stronger than You Know. Some of the chapters within these sections include Happiness vs Joy; Give Thanks for the Glass; When Fear Knocks, Let Joy Answer; and Vulnerability is Strength.
Looking for some wisdom with spirituality? If yes, pick this one up. I have enjoyed the timespent with this title. Robin Roberts has given her mind and spirit to this volume.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for this title. All opinions are my own.
This is an autobiographical self-help book by Robin Roberts, long time host of Good Morning America. Robin infuses many stories of her life and career trajectory (spoiler: she is a strong, determined woman!), as well as her family life (her mom, sister, extended family and current spouse), so you walk away feeling like you really know her. She seems like a wonderful person who anyone would be lucky to have as a friend.
Throughout it we hear what a goal setter and positive person she is, and some of her tricks to maintain her good outlook. There is nothing earth shattering in this book, but I found it very uplifting and loved the audio version, which she narrates! Robin strongly makes the case for "trusting your gut" and knowing what is best for your own self as well as communication as the basis for most things. That is the key to everything, isn't it?! I like to read self-help books periodically to give a little infusion of reflection to my life and this fit the bill. Recommend! 5-stars.
An amazing look into Robin Roberts’s, Co-Anchor of Good Morning America (GMA) life and her beliefs on moving toward “new hopes and dreams.” Her book reminds us that faith as well as perseverance propels us to be the best we can be. Her statement that “tribe is your vibe”, shows one needs to surround themselves with those who are there to help and to be of support. No one lives on an island. As humans we need to connect with and help those as well as ask for help when we need which is something the majority of us find difficult to do. Her mantra that each day should be lived to it’s best potential is on point as everyday should be your “day one”
Other areas of the book takes us through her upbringing, her transition from working in small market radio and broadcast markets to becoming an anchor for GMA. She spends a majority of the time weaving her cancer diagnosis and subsequent bone marrow transplant into the book as an impetus for getting the reader into moving their lives forward and for be thankful for each day.

If you’re a fan of Robin Roberts (and I am), GMA, early mornings, and need a little extra light in your day, this is the perfect read for you! Roberts shares her faith, positive attitude, challenges, and her all-around sense of love. This short book was like a hug for a weary soul; It was uplifting and full of wisdom. It’s filled with encouragement for our good days, bad days, and everything in between.
While Robert’s shares the stories of how she got into broadcasting, the opportunities that came her way, all the ones that didn't, mentors she had and how with faith she kept moving forward, it’s not quite a memoir so don’t expect gritty stories black woman in the TV biz.
I recommend Brighter by The Day because it’s a beautiful reminder of so many real moments in life and how to choose joy for yourself. Brighter by the Day is the kind of book you want to gift to your friends to give them a little light in their lives.
I’m not a self help/positive thinking book kinda girl, however I am a fan of Robin Roberts so I thought why not when I ran across this book on Audible. I really liked this book because it’s not one of those books that makes you feel like a looser that needs to get their life together. Robin gives examples of how to keep going when all you want to do is stop. She points out that Joy not positive thinking or wishing or faking being happy is what gets us to the other side of the hard stuff. Joy and mind set that is. Joy goes hand in hand with Hope , my words not hers. I guess for me it was a reminder of what I already knew but had gotten so bogged down by the past several years of crazy I had forgotten. I’ve read a few reviews that said she was showing her “privilege” in this book. Actually she worked hard to get where she is and “privilege” has nothing to do with where she is today that came from hard work and dedication to her goals. Bottom line I liked this book.
