Adventure, bloodthirsty pirates, and about the worst dinner guest of all time.

Javi Santiago is just a sandwich-obsessed Puerto Rican trying to host the ultimate dinner party and not fail sixth grade. When the annual "Any Three People to Dinner" homework assignment rolls around, Javi needs helps, so he pulls his best friend Wiki and his kid sister Brady into the effort. Only none of them predicted that the family's mysterious antique table would *actually* bring their storied guests to the meal. And who did they invite? Kid Mozart, the Earl of Sandwich, and...Blackbeard the Pirate. Whoops.

Before they can say "avast, ye maties," Blackbeard escapes and Javi's world does an awkward somersault. As the trio tries to avoid the bloodthirsty pirate, a few of their teachers come to their aid--teachers who are suspiciously out of place. But there's no time to think--Blackbeard is intent on summoning his pirate crew, so Javi may have to invite some even zanier figures to set things right again.

Such a fun twist on the ‘who would you invite to dinner if you could invite anyone, living or dead?’ question! When Javi Santiago notices a purring sound coming from the dining table his dad has just bought at an antique shop, little does he know the table’s power… summoning figures from the past, and even fictional characters, to dinner. But Javi, his best friend Will (nicknamed Wiki because he’s so smart), and his sister, Brady, get more than they bargained for when they invite Edward Teach to dinner. Teach is better known as Blackbeard the pirate, and when he escapes from the dinner party, Javi, Wiki and Brady are caught up in an adventure that’s made all the more amazing when they learn that this is not the first time their school has used the table’s summoning powers. Laugh out loud funny, and with a cast of extraordinary characters (I won’t give too much away here, but… Mozart! Cleopatra!), Victor Pineiro’s TIME VILLAINS is an absolute thrill ride! Kids will not only love it… they’ll learn something in the process (“Wiki’s Pedia” at the end of the book guarantees it)! My thanks to the author, to Sourcebooks, and to NetGalley for the eARC.

Time Villains by Victor Piñeiro is a fantasy book that is aimed to young audience, such as late elementary school or middle schoolers. The story starts with the main character, Javi, who is a 6th grader who has to do a project that expects him to invite three people to dinner.

Surprisingly, the pirate Blackbeard sprouts out of Javi's antique dining table. Then Javi, his sister, and his best friend go onto a journey seeking away to return Blackbeard before chaos ensues. This was a refreshing read that brought me back to my middle school days. Anyone interested in adventure books or pirates would enjoy this book.

If you or someone you know appreciates world history and classic literature or likes quirky stories like Obert Skye's Wizard for Hire, they'll enjoy this tale that has characters from the past; both real and fictional, good and bad, traveling to the modern day. It's a little like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure with an antique table instead of a telephone booth.

What an adventure! Javi Santiago's life is pretty typical for a 6th grader. He loves to make food, especially sandwiches, and spend time with his best friend, Wiki, and his sister, Brady. But things change when the annual "Which 3 guests would you invite to dinner" assignment is given. Javi needs to nail this assignment, and with the help of Brady and Wiki, he sets the table. The mysterious antique table brings the 3 guests to life at the table. Suddenly the infamous pirate Blackbeard is let loose into the world and the three friends have to figure out how to defeat him. Maybe a little help from some other historical and literary characters might just be the trick.
This book is such a fun adventure. Who doesn't dream of fighting pirates and going on adventures with their friends. With three friends who have very different strengths, readers are bound to connect with one of them. Don't wait, jump in and let the adventure begin.

From start to finish this novel emphasizes the key parts of middle school; friends, adventure and fun. It sets the scene with best friends and a fearless little sister at a legendarily cool school, then is fast paced and keeps you guessing about what will happen until the very end. The author weaves a delightful collection of historical and fictional characters alongside the books’ protagonists in a thrilling tale of what would happen if a witty prank goes awry. I can’t wait until my boys are old enough to read this wonderful adventure, because I know they will cherish it for years to come.

When the three main characters follow through on a school assignment (setting a table for the three people from history they’d like to have at a dinner party), they’re shocked when the guests actually arrive. Unfortunately, one of their guests was Blackbeard who wants to invite his own guests into the current time. Really cute, funny, fast-paced adventure that gives kids a fun (mostly silly) intro to several historical figures.

Javi, Wiki, and Brady are shopping for a table and find one that purrs! After they are assigned the yearly "if you could bring 3 people to dinner" assignment, they set up the table and BOOM, the three people Javi selected show up! Once they are finished with their conversation, they send them back, but the pirate Edward Teach escapes the house and threatens harm to them unless they give him access to the table for his evil plans. They don't know what to do, but in the process find out they are "Chosen Ones" and that their table has a long history of bringing historical/ fictional people into the present.

I LOVED this book. It is such a fun read. It reminded me of Time Warp Trio and The Goonies put together. The characters are awesome and developed from the beginning with all the strong characteristics and personalities. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I hope this is the beginning of a series.

The concept of the book was genuinely very interesting and original, having some history elements which I loved.
Around 80% it felt like the story was getting stretched out a little too much and ended up being quite boring for me personally.

This rollicking story starts with the simple question--if you could invite any three people to dinner, who would they be? Javi Santiago has no idea that the three people he invites from history will actually come to life! Maybe he would've thought about it more carefully . . . mayhem ensues. A fabulous middle grade adventure with all kinds of twists and turns--including a band of menacing pirates who invade the school. And, the historical content! I love that the author, Victor Piñeiro, introduces a myriad of diverse historical characters (some fictional, some not) who interact in all kinds of unexpected ways. Kids interests will be piqued--they may find something familiar in a Frida Kahlo painting, or recognize the manacing Jabberwocky, or want to find out more about the terrifying transformation of Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. Love, love, loved it. I'm looking forward to the next one, with a new history teacher at the school. Who will it be? Don Quixote? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Rosa Parks, perhaps? Read this book.

Time Villians is the debut of a new series by author Victor Piñeiro, it's time travel with a twist on the classic question, "what three people, real or fictional, living or dead would you invite for dinner if you had the chance?"

6th grader Javi Santiago loves to cook, sandwiches of all kinds are his specialty. School, not so much. Javi is really close to failing English when his teacher assigns the dreaded "which three guests would you invite to dinner" assignment. Given the assignment is worth triple the points, Javi decides that he has to come up with a stellar guest list to impress his teacher and get an A+ to pass her class. Enlisting the help of his best friend, Wiki and younger sister Brady, Javi sets the table, selects the guests, and prepares his most fabulous dish. But then Brady finds a mysterious dinner bell hidden in a secret compartment of the table and upon ringing the bell actually brings their three fictional and historical guests to the table. Young Mozart, John Montagu, aka the Earl of Sandwich and Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard the infamous Pirate are just as surprised as the three kids to suddenly appear. After the dinner party is over, chaos ensues when Blackbeard refuses to return to his time period. Instead, he vows to bring back more pirates and take over their town. Set at the fictional castle, Finistere, now turned into a school in Maryland the trio will have to draw help from their teachers and pull famous people thru time to track down and trick Blackbeard into going back.

Time Villians includes a diverse cast of characters, Javi and Brady are Puerto Rican and Wiki is Haitian American. There's lovely mentions of Puerto Rican inspired dishes made from fried plantains like tostone's and a jibarito sandwich. Finistere, makes for a zany school, think something like Wayside Stories meets Story Thieves and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. And the trio's teachers will remind you of some other fictional characters from books. The time travel aspects and premise are interesting, bringing to mind the question of what happens when changes are made in the past and how it might impact the future? Readers will also enjoy all the various literary and historical characters and those interested can see a complete listing for all of the characters mentioned in the story in Wiki's Pedia of information at the back of the book. Overall this made for a fun debut, although I am curious what will happen next as the premise includes the magical table bringing people from the past and I would think that they learned their lesson about who they might invite in the future. Although the possibilities are limitless. **A huge thank you to Ashlyn Keil at Sourcebooks for the E-ARC**

This fun middle grade novel is based on the question “if you could invite three historical figures to dinner, who would you invite. But in this adventure story, there’s a twist. What if you had a magic table that brought them to life? And then another twist. What if one of those people was a deadly pirate who escapes?

This story has a fun and engaging plot and a fantastic and original cast of characters, each with their own interests and quirks. Javi has a great voice and sense of humor and a love of food (which he happily describes to us). He’s also a bit hesitant in the quest to find the pirate, which makes him all the more human and likeable. Javi’s best friend Wiki is your information and plan-making guy. His analytical nature, along with his fear, is a great contrast to Javi. And last but definitely not least, as she will proudly tell you, is Brady, Javi’s sister. Her feistiness rivals the scariest pirate.

Together, along with a list of other characters I cannot mention because it will give plot points away, they take readers on an adventure to save the world from a tyrant and find strengths they didn’t realize they had. Except for Brady. She’s a force to be reckoned with.

This book is perfect for all middle grade readers and will bring out a joy of reading in even the most reluctant reader.

A fun new series for middle school armchair historians and adventure seekers. When Javi, his younger sister Brady and best friend Wiki bring home the old wood table they really don't want to believe that it called to them but all three of them heard it and are fascinated. When a school assignment calls for them to stage a dinner featuring famous people from the past, none of the kids expected a young Mozart, the Earl of Sandwich and Blackbeard the pirate to show up but that is indeed what happened. As the three try to capture Blackbeard, the table and their school will show them that there is much more to all of it. A clever series opener that will resonate with all the fans of Rick Riordan, Chris Grabenstein and James Riley. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.

Time Villains is a fun middle grade (3rd-7th grade) read. Javi, his best friend Wiki, and his younger sister Brady are pulled into a crazy adventure by a magical table, yep a table. There are many historical characters throughout the story, some are helpful and some want to take over the world. I really enjoyed this story and I think younger kids will too, now I need to find a place that can make me some tostones and mofongo!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in return for an honest review.

"Wait--we're going to try and stop Blackbeard ourselves?" A purring table, school secrets, a tough little sister, somersaults, and swords: Sixth-grader Javi Santigo wields a mighty pen against pirates in Victor Pineiro's TIME VILLAINS. Weaving history, humor, fast action and fun dialogue, Pineiro puts the old question on the antique table: "If you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who would they be?" And so, homework-turns-adventure in the fact-or-fiction tale. "...We're Puerto Rican, and in Puerto Rico, most people think that curses are a real thing, and that ghost stories are true..." Land ho, VILLAINS reaches a new limit in fantasy and #OwnVoices. You know a book is THAT GOOD if you can't wait to share it with a certain eight-year-old!

A delightful adventure that brings many childhood “what if’s” to life. I really struggled to put it down, even as an adult (!), and it was so fun trying to puzzle out the hints about historical figures. I was particularly touched by the scene where Javi discovers his strengths/role within the trio. Can’t wait to gift this book to some awesome kiddos!

What shit was this man high on because yes.

When given the assignment, “If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you invite?” tostone overlord Javi, his walking dictionary best friend Wiki, and kickass pirate queen sister Brady cause quite a stir when they purchase a purring table from an antique store, and it brings Kid Mozart, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, and Edward Teach (iykyk) into their world for dinner. Chaos ensues when Edward (fine, he’s Blackbeard) escapes, in which Javi, Wiki, Brady, and the many historical and mythical figures from their fictional school of Finistere engage in some hilarious shenanigans, epic fight scenes, multiple near-deaths, to return Blackbeard from whence he came (and get him to accept his brutal death). Fast-paced, with lovable characters and some truly laugh-out-loud moments, this is a read for an audience of any age to adore.

Like a plate of delicious tostones served on a magical table that brings historical figures out of the past, Pineiro serves up a fast-paced and hilarious adventure that had me hooked from the first page. I loved the interaction of the main characters as they tried to stop Blackbeard and send him back to his time. After finishing the book myself, I gave it to my son and could hear him constantly guffawing from his room as he devoured it in a day. This is totally the type of book I would have read when I was 9-12, so my only question is when can we get book 2?

This was a fun time-travel romp through famous people from history, stemming from the question: If you could invite three people from history to dinner -- or lunch -- and the table would fetch them out of time for you, who would you invite?

Javi Santiago invites kid Mozart and the Earl of Sandwich, but he's tricked into inviting Edward Teach. Google him. He Googles himself, and of course learns what happens to him (ultimately), and doesn't want to return to his slice of time. Who would, with that fate awaiting them?

But what Javi and his friends learn is… Teach's not the only one to try and evade the inevitable. Others have been fetched for "dinner" by the time-travelling table that trembles and they didn't return to their slices of times, either.

They became… you guessed it! Some of the toughest teachers at the middle school! That's why they really know their history. ARGH!!!!!

I won't spoil how it ends. Enjoy all the mind-boggling possibilities of a time-travel menu!

Book 2 published in July, and my library just got it, so look for a review in the months to come.

This book will appeal to the right audience, but it just isn't me. I'm not a big fan of humorous fantasy stories, but if that something you enjoy, then you might want to add this book to your TBR. As part of a school project, Javi Santiago and his friend, Wiki, must decide which three people in history they would like to invite to dinner. The friends, and Javi's sister, Brady, were not expecting their new antique table that purred would actually bring these characters to the meal. When one of the famous historical figures escapes and plans to invite reinforcements to help him in the modern-day, the kids uncover a secret about their teachers and must find a way to put everyone back where they belong. Although the story was a bit far-fetched for me, many kids will love that Blackbeard is the rebellious guest that wants to bring his pirates to this world and avoid his fate in his own time. There are several other characters from history that shake things up and add to the mayhem. I did enjoy seeing the Puerto Rican representation in a fantasy story, though.

A rollicking ride of a novel! I was thrilled to read an ARC of this fun fantasy adventure. Many thanks to the author and the publisher, Sourcebooks.

The premise will draw you in right from the start. An antique table that magically brings historical guests to a meal? What fun! Count me in!

Javi, Brady, and Wiki will quickly become your new favorite MG trio. I found myself enthralled by their predicament, as Blackbeard, one of their dinner party guests, escapes into the forest, and the three kids begin to realize not only that he's up to no good, but their school is not quite what it seems. Luckily, they have some famous teachers on their side.

The action is nonstop, the premise is highly imaginative, and the humor will delight middle-grade readers. This book also made me hungry! I would love to try one of Javi's famous tostones. Maybe a cookbook next, Victor?

This is a fresh approach to adventure for middle graders!

This summer I have an opportunity to be a MG librarian for summer school, and I was looking for an engaging adventurous read-aloud for my 6th graders. This new release answered with its tales of surprise, family and friends, adventure, and challenges. It offers a unique plot set-up, one that quickly engaged those students who are already moderately (or more) engaged in school. I also appreciated the fresh vocabulary it offered, along with the unobtrusive clarifying phrases for that vocabulary.

A good read, and thanks to Sourcebooks Young Readers and #NetGalley for the chance to preview this strong entry in the MG catalog. Releasing July 6, 2021. Add it to your To Purchase list!

Sixth grader Javi Santiago has problems — he’s not the brains, he’s not particularly athletic…and his school’s new groundskeeper is a murderous pirate from the 18th century out to get him. Time Villains is a clever, playful and endlessly funny adventure, and Pineiro flavors the story with culinary flourishes, Puerto Rican traditions and tons of heart. With a cast of imaginatively rendered characters plucked from history and literature, this book is bursting with the boisterous energy of the Puerto Rican parranda. Open up and let the party in.

This is such a fun book! Probably aimed toward older elementary/early middle school fans of fantasy, Time Villains takes a super-silly premise (middle schoolers accidentally summon Blackbeard to our current timeline, can't figure out how to send him back, chaos ensues) and treats it with the exact right tone of silliness it deserves. I love how the characters in the book take the premise seriously but the tone is perfectly suited to the ridiculousness of the plot. It's as if Bill and Ted were taken back to middle school and threatened by a bloodthirsty pirate.

A fun, engaging read for those who may need a break from middle school staples such as The Giver or To Kill a Mockingbird.
