“O Bife”, de Jack London
Hoje, a juventude sentava-se no canto oposto. Quanto a ele, estava a lutar há uma hora, e era um velho. Se lutasse como Sandel, não teria aguentado 15 minutos. Mas a questão é que não se recuperava. Aquelas artérias salientes e aquele coração esfalfado não lhe permitiam reunir forças nos intervalos entre os assaltos. (…) E faltava-lhe o bife que desde manhã cedo lhe vinha a apetecer. Sentiu avolumar-se-lhe um ódio grande e terrível pelos talhantes que lhe haviam recusado crédito.
O boxe é de longe o desporto olímpico mais estúpido mas não há dúvida de que dá azo a boa ficção, como “Million Dollar Baby” no cinema e “O Bife” na literatura. Tom King é um pugilista nas últimas que mal consegue sustentar a sua família e pagar a renda e que, agora, enfrenta uma jovem promessa do pugilismo pelos 30 dólares que poderão pagar as suas dívidas. Jack London faz um relato cheio de suspense de todo o combate, assalto a assalto, levando-nos a torcer por este homem desesperado e massacrado.
Quando sentiu o embate, King percebeu que se abatia sobre si o familiar véu negro da inconsciência. Por um instante, uma curta fracção de um instante, deixou de existir. Naquele momento sentiu o oponente a desaparecer do seu campo de visão (…) Era como se tivesse adormecido de repente e voltasse a abrir os olhos e, no entanto, o intervalo de inconsciência fora tão microscopicamente curto que nem tivera tempo de cair.

90 minutes left on a long plane journey, and not wanting to start a new novel, and on my way to Canada, I opted for a couple of Jack London short stories.
This must be one of the best sports books ever read. The Australian setting surprised me, as I hadn't realised London set his books outside Canada. It tells the simple sorry of prize boxer Tom King and his family, as he nears the end of his fighting career and of one particular fight.
Hugely recommended, even if you are not a sports fan.
My other London short story, was a re-read by the way, the fantastic 'To Build A Fire'.

Agli albori del Novecento, un critico letterario americano si era espresso così:
"La forza di Jack London non degenera mai in brutalità. Pur scrivendo di cose brutali e scarne, degli istinti primitivi scatenati da un mondo degradato e sottoposto a ogni forma di schiavitù, resta sempre e comunque un artista. Accettiamo ciò che ci racconta perché sentiamo che è tutto vero, profondamente vero."
Probabilmente l'analisi più accurata letta in circolazione e, dopo aver terminato di leggere l'ennesimo libro di London, non potevo non andare a ripescare tale dichiarazione per dare conferma alle mie prime sensazioni.
Pugni nudi, oltre che far parte di un bellissimo e prezioso progetto editoriale che proviene da Scampia, è una mini raccolta di tre racconti affilati come bisturi.
Si parte con Una bella bistecca, in cui il pugile veterano Tom King, sale di nuovo sul ring per guadagnarsi da vivere a suon di pugni e nocche spaccate. La descrizione dell'incontro è vivida e febbrile. London, nella sua vita, è stato anche pugile e di certo non gli sarà stato difficile riportare tra le righe le sue esperienze personali. I ganci, i montanti e gli uppercut descritti, arrivano decisi fino al lettore, accogliendo tutta l'adrenalina del momento e tutto il pathos dell'incontro. Il titolo è Una bella bistecca perché a volte basterebbe aver mangiato qualcosa in più per far sì che il corso degli eventi cambi in maniera favorevole, ma quando hai pochi soldi e devi persino mandare i bambini a dormire presto, pur di non farli lamentare per la fame...insomma, London che scrive cose molto London, ed è una fottuta garanzia.
Si prosegue con Il messicano, che io avevo già letto nell'edizione La vita felice.
Anche in questo caso abbiamo come protagonisti due pugili, il primo americano, forte e affermato, il secondo invece è uno sconosciuto, viene dal Messico ed è malvisto da tutto l' ambiente che lo circonda. Rivera, infatti - questo il suo nome, inventato per sfuggire alle retate della polizia - non combatte per fame o per la gloria, bensì per denaro, e non per mero arrivismo o avidità personale, tutt'altro.
Nei suoi occhi, gelidi e oscuri, vi sono ancora impresse le drammatiche scene dei soprusi subiti dalla sua gente e dalla sua famiglia, per mano degli uomini del presidente Diaz.
C'è la necessità di far scoppiare una rivoluzione, una rivoluzione armata, beninteso, e ancor prima c'è necessità di reperire i soldi sufficienti per stipare gli arsenali.
Combattere con tali premesse porterà lo sconosciuto ed enigmatico Rivera a essere imbattibile, anche per l'avversario più forte.
In questo caso, London, si cimenta in un racconto ideologicamente incisivo e in qualche modo erotico, conturbante. Usa la brutalità come mordente. Arringa le folle con la semplice seduzione della carta e dell'inchiostro. Ancora una volta: London che fa cose da London.
Finiamo col più brutale dei tre racconti, La follia di John Harned. Ironicamente cinico e sprezzante nel parlare di una tematica violenta come La corrida sudamericana.
John Harned è un gringo che non ha mai assistito a una sfida uomo-toro nell'arena, e si lascerà convincere a farlo incalzato dalle lusinghe di una donna altezzosa e affascinante. Ma ecco che, ben presto, tutta la bestialità della pratica si rivelerà davanti ai suoi occhi indignati e questo non potrà lasciarlo indifferente a lungo...
Quest'ultimo, fra i tre, è il vero pugno nudo assestato alla bocca dello stomaco di chi legge. Infarcito di critica nei confronti dell' ipocrisia sociale, verso la gretta stupidità umana e assumendo uno stoico, seppur velato, ridimensionamento delle tradizioni popolari, esso denota ancora una volta l'immensa capacità narrativa di London, autore ancora troppo poco divulgato e troppo poco compreso, per raccogliere sul serio il successo che egli merita davvero.
London maneggiava armi. Maledettamente bene

Por un bistec es ameno y propio para tanto los que adoramos la lectura como para todo aquel que no haya leído nada en su vida. Son 50 páginas que se leen en 50 minutos, fuera bromas, fue casi lo que tardé en leerlo.

I didn't know that Jack London wrote about boxing matches and interpreted them. He wrote these two stories in this book, inspired by two matches he commented on (Mexican and A Slice of Steak). The cover of the book features a picture of Joe Rivers (from the Mexican story). Despite my difficulty focusing, it was a book that kept me engaged in one sitting. It is a fact that London's immortal name and talent are proven each time, and these two stories are works in which you can genuinely empathize with the characters, gain deep insights into the period they were written in, and serve as solid examples of the art of writing. Additionally, the translator's notes are truly valuable.
In both stories, we witness different boxers entering the matches for different reasons and the silence we are left with after the results of these matches. They are beautiful works to contemplate on youth, old age, revolution, and injustices.

Jack London’s stories typically depict elements of survival, whether that survival is physical or emotional, and his story “A Piece of Steak” is no exception. Instead of the harsh Alaskan landscape that is often the backdrop to his tales, “A Piece of Steak” moves inside into the boxing ring, with down on his luck and poverty stricken Tom King, a fighter who is past his prime, having to figure out a way to make some ends meat and provide for his family. He ventures off with the confidence of a man who has had many battles in the ring, and understands the importance of coming through in his quest:
“And he was leaving it to go out and into the night to get meat for his mate and cubs—not like a modern-working man going to machine grind, but in the old, primitive, royal, animal way, by fighting for it.”
For some reason, although they are entirely different stories and plots, elements of this story reminded me of “The Set Up”, a 50s film where a down and out boxer goes out to make a stand against another fighter. One recurring idea within London’s story is notion of “youth vs age” and, as Tom King, enters the ring with the up and comer, we see this theme played out through Tom’s eyes.
There are some pretty amazing descriptions of the fight itself, so I think this story would appeal to anyone into boxing. But even the non-boxing fan can, and probably will, enjoy this, as the themes transcend the actual boxing match itself.
As often with London, this story is a meditation on the circle of life, and the notions of survival of the fittest. As we head to the conclusion, London captures the essence of the broader themes of life with spot on prose and symbolism.

Piccola storia dal grande significato.
Intenso e triste, con poche pagine è riuscito a creare un mondo di sensazioni e immagini mentali sulla giovinezza, il tempo che passa (come direbbe Proust "Perduto"), l'avvicendarsi delle stagioni della vita con i limiti e le prerogative di ognuna di esse.
Jack London l'ho scoperto da poco,
una gran bella scoperta.

PERFECT short story. Hits all points: it's short with a plot: beginning/middle/end, dramatic, fatalistic, unapologetic, exciting, and sad. I don't rehash plots in my reviews (how is that a review?)
Written in 1909, A Piece of Steak has timeless relevance. The story reads like written today. Perhaps a relegated club fighter today would be able to obtain the proper nutrition, but poverty is a timeless emplacement. I'm an experienced boxer and can attest to the accuracy and realistic details in the boxing descriptions by London. London must have watched many prize fights and spoken to several fighters to obtain these notable descriptions.
The main theme is wisdom of age vs resilience of youth. Critically detailed, we see protagonist's ability to expertly strategize the bout from years of experience, having been a young boxer climbing the ranks like the opponent he now faces. We can conclude eventually the opponent will be in Tom King's position. The cycle of life. Youth succeeds from elasticity, age survives by will and wisdom. "Youth was ever youthful. It was only Age that grew old." Tom King endures fighting in order to feed his family and as he notes regrettably has no other trade to earn a wage.
There's a finite tenure in any pro athlete's career when age retires them. Age is sent to pasture by youth. "Youth was the Nemesis" the impossible adversary. The other antagonist here is poverty and its realistic limitations. Only a small piece of steak could have changed the outcome. That would have only come with money that Tom King didn't have.

Çok güzeldi. Jack London'un farklı bir yönünü keşfetttim bu kitapla 4 tane boks öyküsü varmış ikisi bu kitapta yer alıyor diğer ikisini de okumak istedim kitabın sonunda, keşke dördü de bir kitapta toplanmış olsaydı demeden edemedim. Çevirmen notları da çok kıymetliydi. Hem bir sürü yeni şey öğrendim hem de birbirinden güzel iki boks hikayesi okudum bu tertemiz çeviri sayesinde! (film önerileri de bonus:)

Une autre nouvelle de Jack London, grand passionné de boxe. Il raconte l'ultime combat d'un boxeur en fin de carrière : sur le ring, sa force déclinante, la faim qui lui tord l'estomac, ses tentatives de faire reculer la jeunesse, son intelligence de jeu. En un combat, l'homme comprend tout et même un peu plus.

Que pensarías si en una primera escena del libro, encuentras a un hombre comiendo una cena sencilla, añorando comerse un buen pedazo de carne, mientras su esposa le mira comer y sus hijos se fueron a la cama temprano, con hambre, a fin de que su padre tuviera una mejor comida.
No digas que no, fluyen los sentimientos de indignación y crítica. Pues bien, igual los sentí e igual mantuve esa sensación por buena parte del cuento. Sin embargo, no todo es lo que parece, dependiendo de quién y cómo se mire, hay injusticias que las personas aceptan sobre sí, con el objetivo de obtener un bien mayor. No quiere decir que esto sea bueno, simplemente es lo que es.
Se trata de un cuento sobre los esfuerzos por la sobrevivencia, la reflexión de un boxeador que llega al límite de su vida, piensa y reflexiona sobre lo que ha hecho y lo que le llevó a esa última pelea y sus consecuencias. Donde sin duda, recuerdas aquella frase de “Juventud divino tesoro”, pero que además valoras la importancia que solo la experiencia te puede dar, y que hace que te aferres a una última esperanza.
Es un cuento diferente, si, se basa en el boxeo, lo advierto. Si no sabes nada del tema, tranquilo, que te lo describe paso a paso, lo cual también puede ser pesado para quienes no mostramos gusto por él. Suerte si decides leerlo.

Sin embargo, no todo es lo que parece, dependiendo de quién y cómo se mire, hay injusticias que las personas aceptan sobre sí, con el objetivo de obtener un bien mayor. No quiere decir que esto sea bueno, simplemente es lo que es.
Se trata de un cuento sobre los esfuerzos por la sobrevivencia, la reflexión de un boxeador que llega al límite de su vida, piensa y reflexiona sobre lo que ha hecho y lo que le llevó a esa última pelea y sus consecuencias. Donde sin duda, recuerdas aquella frase de “Juventud divino tesoro”, pero que además valoras la importancia que solo la experiencia te puede dar, y que hace que te aferres a una última esperanza.
Es un cuento diferente, si, se basa en el boxeo, lo advierto. Si no sabes nada del tema, tranquilo, que te lo describe paso a paso, lo cual también puede ser pesado para quienes no mostramos gusto por él. Suerte si decides leerlo.

Obra maestra de la literatura pugilística, en ella Jack London relata con crudeza la historia de Tom King, un boxeador viejo, con los puños hechos polvo, con la cara más maltratada que una patata rancia, con las orejas de coliflor, que sale a pelear una vez más para poder alimentar a su familia. King sube al cuadrilátero hambriento, con los nudillos rotos y las arterias hinchadas a enfrentar a un joven retador que está en busca de la gloria. Con el flujo poético de las palabras London te hace subir al ring y te hace sentir el dolor de cada golpe, te hace probar el sudor y la sangre que empapan la atávica contienda entre la frenética enjundia de la juventud y la experiencia de la vejez, es una lucha entre dos gladiadores pero también es la lucha del hombre contra el tiempo. El triste rostro magullado de King representa la decadencia de la vida, entre la bestialidad del mundo del boxeo se asoma una reflexión sobre la tragedia de nuestra efímera existencia, se encuentra una alegoría del doloroso ciclo de la vida. Esto no solo es un cuento de boxeo, miseria, dolor y hambre, es un relato existencialista.

Tom King, un boxeador en el ocaso de su carrera, ya no pelea por la gloria si no para poder pagar un plato de comida. Su urgencia económica lo enfrenta a una realidad aplastante: Su juventud se ha ido. Allí estarán enfocados sus pensamientos a lo largo del cuento. Sandel, su rival en el ring, se presenta como la personificación de la juventud. Aquella juventud de la que él alguna vez había gozado estaba a punto de arrojarlo al precipicio, como él también había arrojado al precipicio a juventudes anteriores.
"(...) la juventud era la némesis. Destruía a los viejos inútiles y no se daba cuenta que, al hacer eso, se destruía a sí misma (...)"
El boxeo tiene la cualidad de ser una gran herramienta para la épica y para funcionar como analogía de la vida, "los golpes de la vida". Es inevitable pensar en Rocky, pero este cuento me hizo acordar particularmente a The Set-Up (1949, R. Wise). Si te gustó esta lectura, la recomiendo.

Ay... qué difícil decidir cuántas estrellas darle 🙈 sobretodo cuando este cuento me lo dio mi supervisora creativa quien se tomó el trabajo de dármelo con una notita que decía “siempre es un buen momento para leer un cuento” (más linda!) pero la verdad es que no me pareció taaaan chvr, perdón! 😩 y es que el cuento trata de la historia de un boxeador que está en una miseria tan dura que tiene que mandar a sus hijos a dormir sin cenar, ya que está pronto a una pelea y no hay comida para toda la familia, salvo para él que necesita energías 🤦♀️. Así de dramático es el inicio que luego pasa a detallar la pelea, que lamentablemente no me trasmitió mucho. Lo peor es que me terminó de matar, con un final tan abierto y libre de interpretación. Lamento mucho la crítica al cuento, pero solo lo lamento porque, en verdad, fue un lindo detalle de mi supervisora 😢🥺☹️.

Jack London’dan çok akıcı ve okuması keyifli iki öykü. Üslubu her zamanki gibi sade ve çok tempolu yazarın. Kitaba da ismini veren ‘Bir Dilim Biftek’ öyküsü, artık yaşlanan bir boksörün hayatla mücadelesi anlatıyor. Gençlik-yaşlılık ve yoksulluk üzerine etkileyici bir anlatı diyebilirim. Meksikalı ise boksör Joe Rivers’ın hayatına dayanan bir kurgu. Boks, devrim, Meksika İç Savaşı, Gringolar üzerine çok akıcı bir hikaye. Filmi çekildi mi bilmiyorum ama çekilmediyse tam filme uyarlanmalık bir eser bana göre. Yazarın sevenlerine gönül rahatlığıyla tavsiye ederim.

Özellikle derlemeye adını veren ilk hikayenin yarattığı atmosfer, boksörde bıraktığı dejavu duygusu, yaşanan sefaletin boyutu ve maçın sonuyla bıraktığı hüzün ziyadesiyle etkiliyor.
İkinci öykü ise gerek Meksika devrimi ve boks arasında kurduğu alegoriyle gerekse de güçlü ile zayıfın amansız mücadelesine yüklediği akıl dolu bakışla zihinleri meşgul etmeyi biliyor. Ayrıca kitabın sonuna eklenen notlar tarihsel bilgilendirme açısından faydalı.

дочитала це оповідання і я вам скажу, що це вау.
Цей твір про життя боксера Тома Кінга поза рингом. Що бокс – це не лише насилля та жорстокість, це не бійка заради бійки, а ще й можливість зажити нормальним життям, отримавши бажаний кусень м'яса.
Саме оповідання – дуель. І не ринг тут стає головним. Це боротьба між Старістю та Молодістю, вічний двобій, який триває не тільки на рингу, а й поза ним.
«Він бився понуро, хоч і далі розраховував на свій основний капітал – молодість. А Кінгів основний капітал був досвід»

At the behest of one of my professors, I’m posting a brief review of Jack London’s A Piece of Steak. London succeeds in engrossing the reader from the first paragraph and sets an excellent pace, making the reader feel like they are in the story. As for the title itself, I believe that London was referring to the actual texture of a steak, as it can withstand the beating (like Tom King did) of a meat tenderizer before being put into the frying pan and cooked.

This is a short story so it shouldn't count towards my book goal, but as a piece of fiction, by one of my favorite authors, it is a worthy read. For those who are aging, who are observing their physical strength decline, this is a particularly poignant characterization. For those of us "raging against the dying of the light," we will recognize King's plight as a metaphor for our own lives, even if it was not meant as so when written.

Jack London could write about stale water and even then I'd fall in love with it.
This short story captures and conveys through such beautiful writing, an agonizing tale about youth and age and life despite and due to it. In such a short story I sympathized with the character on such a deep level. It had some of the most eloquent writing I've seen in a short story of London's and now I have to sit and ponder for 6 hours about it.

Capolavoro poetico e strappalacrime di London, il più semplice di quelli sulla boxe e per questo anche il più intenso e fulminante. London non ha eguali nel descrivere gli incontri di boxe, e qui tutto gira intorno a quella bella bistecca che rappresenta molto di più. Come scrivere un capolavoro con pochi elementi e tanta cura per i dettagli.
