Joni Weir kissed her husband goodbye just that morning, but she never figured it would be the last time she’d see him alive.
When the news hits that Officer Barry Weir was shot and killed in the line of duty, Detective Madison Knight and every cop in Stiles is itching for revenge. With evidence pointing to a drive-by shooting, the investigation takes Madison into the seedy underbelly of the city in the search for justice. But as she digs, the evidence only becomes more puzzling.
With emotions running high, Madison’s relationships are tested to their breaking point. Troy Matthews, her boyfriend and colleague, also Weir’s childhood friend, is cut deeply, and his grief drives a wedge between them. But she’s not going to let her own pain stop her from getting to the truth. Madison will push through—for Troy, but also for Weir’s wife and three young daughters—and figure out if Weir was murdered as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD possibly under attack, she has to do it fast. Before more officers pay with their lives.
A brilliant action-packed mystery with heart-stopping twists. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, J.D. Robb, and Lisa Regan.

In The Line of Duty by Carolyn Arnold may not be the action packed, in your face suspense and danger that I love so much, but I do enjoy learning about the step by step procedures of a murder investigation, especially when it is one of their own…and the impact it has on the characters personal lives.
Carolyn Arnold has done her research, including the impact the media has on an investigation. I, too, think they dwell too much on the bad, never telling the whole story.
Madison is a detective with the Stiles Police Department and Troy, her boyfriend, is a member of their SWAT team. Their relationship takes a direct hit. Both of them were friends of the murdered officer, but Troy had grown up with him, been his best man and was the godfather of his children.
Troy’s nickname for Madison is Bulldog. She is tenacious, aggressive and determined, sometimes forgetting to eat and sleep. She’s like the energizer bunny, she doesn’t stop. Just the type of person you would want working your case, if you had one.
It takes a real knack to figure out who’s lying, who’s telling the truth, getting the information they need from uncooperative suspects and witnesses and Madison is like a dog with a bone, her mind putting the puzzle together, piece by piece.
I think their situation could actually be a benefit to their relationship if they could let the old baggage go, knock down some walls, and use the knowledge of the nature of the beast, their work, to overcome some of the bumps in the road sure to come their way. Imagine if you were the other half and not a police officer…their late nights, not knowing where they are and what they are doing, and the danger, never knowing if the car they pull over will have a criminal that will blow them away rather than be taken.
I became invested in the characters, even the most peripheral, because they all had their place in the story. Some were good, some were bad, but they all have a ring of truth to them. The police kept their cool, when they could have gunned down the suspects and got away with it. The bad guys did what bad guys do, lie and muddle the investigation.
I do like some humor with my danger and Carolyn Arnold supplied it. Madison and her partner Terry are quite a team and I look forward to more adventures with them
In The Line Of Duty by Carolyn Arnold rings of truth and realism, the slow and steady investigation into the murder of one of their own. I loved following each thread of the mystery, unraveling it a strand at a time, veering this way and that, eliminating one thread only to find another.
I only figured it out right before she told and I LOVE IT! Carolyn Arnold had to break it down for me. That is so rare, that I can only bow down and say I’m not worthy.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of In The Line of Duty by Carolyn Arnold.
Count me in with the other duffers who had a hard time following the resolution of the plot. I wasn't a fan of the switching between first and last names to identify the players on top of the intricate detail involved in the murder mystery. I also wasn't too keen on how the romantic angle played out, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.
What a pity. I was enjoying this book until about 75-80% of the way through. I gave up.
The convolutions of the plot were just too difficult. It was like trying to untangle three balls of knitting wool that had been left with a cat for a week. So complicated that I had no idea who was being talked about and what they had done and why or how. I just couldn’t be bothered.
The characters were very good. The development was working. But the plot was just, well, too complicated. I’m not sure if the author was trying to be clever, or just thought it wasn’t really that hard to follow, or perhaps I was just a little slow and stupid. It became towards the end like reading a book on the paradigms of logic. Whatever that means.
Reminded me of some of those syllogisms, if this is true and that is true then this must also be true, but I couldn’t keep up with it.
Up to the point I stopped reading I was really, really interested. I was keen to keep reading to find out who did it. By the time I stopped reading I couldn’t have cared less.
I like to check out other review before making my own, and I was amazed at the number of 5 star ratings. Hardly an average or poor rating at all, and here I was thinking I'd see a lot of 2 to 3 stars. The story starts out okay. Then it becomes a police procedural with unlikely characters, a very convoluted murder plot that really does not make any sense at all when it comes to its conclusion. It's like a switch flipped on some of the characters and it was totally unbelievable. On top of that is the requisite love interest that falls apart, and it was no mystery at all that it would be the end. I found the story pretty mundane...not good enough to make me want to read, but not bad enough for me to toss it aside.
An officer is gunned down and Madison and her fellow officers set out to find out the reasons and who did the shooting. The story is a good story and how the officers go about finding the persons responsible is interesting. Too much love interest and what is going to happen to poor me.
Carolyn Arnold is an excellent author. I discovered that much from reading her previous books. But from all her books I’ve read so far, In The Line of Duty, is hands down my favorite.
Detective Madison Knight is the protagonist in this series, and this is the seventh book so far. But even without reading the previous books, you can just pick up this one and enjoy the story. It does make it tougher to keep the characters apart and figure out how they’re all connected than if you’d start from book one, in my opinion, but it’s definitely doable.
Anyway, on to the story. Barry Weir, police officer, gets shot. Detective Madison Knight and her team are itching to catch Barry’s murderer. The one must devastated about Barry’s passing is Troy Matthews, Madison’s boyfriend and Barry’s childhood friend.
Evidence points to a gang-related drive-by, but the deeper Madison and her team dig, the more convoluted the case becomes, and the less likely that Barry Weir was shot in a random shooting…
I don’t want to spoil the story, but there were some clues I picked up on, and others I completely missed. The author did a fabulous job describing the inner workings of a police station and police proceedings.
Madison Knight is an intriguing protagonist. She’s independent, strong, capable, intelligent, and overall, a very realistic character.
This was a gripping, suspenseful story, and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good mystery read.
'In The Line Of Duty' A Madison Knight Series Book, #7 of 7 Without any spoilers, I have to say this story was very well written. What a great detective/police book with a lot of exciting and interesting events happening. Even with this being the 7th book in a series and the first Madison Knight book that I have read, it was a complete story. I did not feel I was missing out on any parts of the story. Carolyn does a great job of letting us know who everyone is and the parts that they play in the story. This story kept my attention the whole time and had me experiencing almost every emotion I can think of. There was intrigue, heartbreak, happiness, sadness, anger and excitement going on, throughout the whole book. If you enjoy reading books with murder mysteries, police procedures, while you are trying to figure out the ending and who did it, with a slew of twists and turns along the way, then this is the book for you. Great Job Carolyn and still NO SPOILERS BUT Chapter 56 made me UGLY CRY! So Heartbreaking and Sad! I received an early copy of this book from Beck Valley Books in return for my Honest Review.
In The Line of Duty. Book 7 of the Detective Knight Series by Carolyn Arnold was my first to read in the series. Although, it's book seven in the series, it's an excellent stand-alone mystery, too.
Detective Madison Knight is a character that sucks you in immediately to her world as a police detective, and the emotional turmoil both inside and outside of the police station when a fellow officer and friend is senselessly gunned down.
Ms. Arnold gives us not only an inside look at what the men and women in blue do to keep us safe but makes us feel the roller coaster of emotions they face when the worst happens.
The story is complicated, involving many players, and requires a bit of concentration to keep all of the characters and follow the thread of their stories to the truth, but it’s a trip worth taking.
I’ve always respected the men and women who work so diligently to keep us safe day in and day out and now, having gotten a glimpse into what it likes for those who wear the uniform, I respect each one of them, even more.
If you love police procedurals mysteries, you will enjoy, In The Line of Duty.
I absolutely loved this book. I have not read any other books in the series, but I will certainly make an effort to seek them out now! I actually could see it being a movie. I even have an idea of who could play some of the characters, but I will keep that to myself for now. I thought it was great that the author makes such an effort to do her research on police procedures. I also love that I was kept guessing as to who might have done it, and I was surprised when the full story was laid out. Definitely not who I was expecting! These days, there are too many stories focusing on the police in a negative light, and I was glad to read this book that has the utmost respect for law enforcement. Carolyn Arnold is now on my list of authors to read more work from. And Madison is a great character that I will be following from now on!
the story premise is good, a police officer shot and killed in an apparent drive by. Rather than explore the incredible teamwork it takes a police department to solve a crime the story is all about super cop Madison and how she will solve the crime if it is the last thing she does. Then there are the little side stories about her relationship with her SWAT boyfriend who acts as thought he wants to end the relationship because of his relationship with the murdered officer and then towards the end of the book something happens and it is all good again in their relationship. I glanced through some of the other reviews and have to agree that the story at times is rather convoluted and there are a number of characters to keep track of but I did stick with it through the end and hence the 3 star rating. I do not think Carolyn Arnold will be an author I read again soon.
Author gift I had to approach this one a couple of times to get into it. It covers only a few days in the lives of the Stiles Police Department employees, but they are intense, and pretty disheartening, and graphic. What got me was the number of characters - so many folks! Hard to keep them straight. But as always, Carolyn Arnold does bring us back to see the good in people, and the camaraderie of our forces in blue that hold them together and lift them up, so stick with it, folks, it's a good tale. REVIEWED on December 7, 2024, at Goodreads, AmazonSmile, B&N, BoobBub, and Kobo.
The purpose of Thrifty Thursday is to read a book which was free (at some point).
Kindle freebie on August 5, 2024 (currently $4.99 at Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited as of writing this post)
I had one more freebie in this series, but it is a jump from book 2 to book 7. Madison is no longer with the man she "loved" in book 2 and now "loves" Troy from the SWAT team. She apparently met him 5 months ago when he saved her life. This not knowing stuff is why I dislike jumping around in a series. Anyway, it is 9 months since Justified.
In the Line of Duty is a case where an officer is shot at the end of shift as he puts gas in his car. Barry is a beloved husband and father to three girls. He is also a close friend of Maddy and Troy. Troy has known him since childhood. They both take it hard as does the rest of the force. They all are working on the case but Madison and her partner, Terry are leads.
Madison seems to handle things a bit better personally. Troy shuts her out and she doubts him but is too busy with the case to make things much worse. She does connect with her sister. She also works well with her boss, Winston who is also on the case to find the killer. She usually doesn't keep contact with him during a case but this time she does. She also does much better with Hershey, her dog, boarding him at a nice kennel when she is tied up in a case.
The case is complex with looking at Barry's cases and also a possible gang connection. The forensics is a big help to them. It seems incredible they solved it as quickly as they did.
Overall it's not my favorite police series. I liked the books but won't make an effort to read the entire series.
“In the Line of Duty” by Carolyn Arnold is the seventh book in the Maddison Knight series. Having never read the previous books in the series, I was a bit worried that I would not be able to follow the story. However, my worries were unnecessary. This book can be read as a stand-alone.
The story began on a sad note. Madison’s colleague and friend, officer Barry Weir, was shot and killed while off duty. The question on everyone’s lips at this point was, was this a specific hit or was it an attack on police officers in general? The men and women of the Stiles PD find themselves in a race against time to find the killer before he strikes again.
This story is a demonstration of what the persons who swore to protect and serve face on a daily basis. It also demonstrates the trauma and turmoil they face when one of theirs is taken down by ruthless criminals. This was a story of real human emotions that hit too close to home. What stood out most to me in this story is the manner in which grief can either bring persons together or pull them apart. In this instance, I saw officers who could barely tolerate each other, working together to achieve a common goal. Also, I saw the toll it took on Madison’s relationship with her significant other.
The characters were interesting, but the one that stood out for me was Madison. She was a kickass detective who was fearless, strong-willed and tenacious. She followed all possible leads as she was committed to solving this case. She confronted everything head on. I loved how the author portrayed both her personal and professional life. It shows her struggling to gain approval from her mom who does not approve of her career choice. This showed that there is a sensitive side to her. The story was gripping. I could not wait to find out who was responsible for the killing and what was the motive. There were so many possible suspects. Just when I thought I had it figured out another suspect was thrown into the mix. When all was revealed I was in utter shock as I never saw it coming.
This is my second time reading Ms. Arnold’s work and I am impressed with her writing style and how she portrays her characters. It is evident that she had done her due diligence before putting pen to paper. Her attention to detail was on point and the way she described each scene made me feel as if I was actually there.
This is a must read for fans of police procedurals.
In the Line of Duty (Detective Madison Knight Series Book 7) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Another superb Madison Knight story from the great author Carolyn Arnold, that makes every penny of the price worth its weight in gold, In the Line of Duty is Detective Madison Knight Series' Book 7 and a lucky no 7 it is too. Despite personal relationship issues between Madison and beau Troy, that see them separate for a while, the intensity of her latest investigation - the drive-by murder of one of their own department, Detective Barry Weir - in the small hours of the night, while refuelling his car - leads to the suspicion of gang revenge...but of course things are never that simple! Even a bumper sticker may turn out to be a vital clue, but is just as likely to be a red-herring. Can Madison unravel the truth and lies spun by he many suspects, before trying to save her love life from going down the pan? Read In the Line of Duty by Carolyn Arnold and prepare to be amazed!
Officer down the one thing all officers of the law don't want to hear, complicated story so many suspects. Is it gang related or is a sticker on the back of the get away car meant to miss lead. On top of that Madison and Troy are almost a couple ha. Officer Barry Weir a well respected police officer, killed while filling his car at the gas station. As I said complicated story with twists and turns on top of the feelings of loss for a fellow officer. Troy you find out is the closest to Barry and his family Madison is a good friend of the wife everyone puts their own feeling aside and the whole department work together on this together. If I say to much I could easily mislead you it's a great must read book and even Madison is stumped at times. Go on read the book and see if you can the shooter, good luck on that. Highly recommended and my thanks to the Author Carolyn Arnold
It's the end o the day and Officers have to fill the gas tanks of their issued police cars to be prepared for the next day. All they have on their minds are getting home to their families. Certainly not a car driving past and getting shot. The work finding the shooter is top of list for all departments as he was a friend and brother. Question in the back of each one's minds is why and are they the next target. Personal feelings hit Tony and Madison hard as this was a friend, closer to Tony than she knew. Carolyn Arnold puts words and feelings in this book that are true to life. Great writer and series.

Madison is an interesting cop character— trying to reconcile the cop who goes off1/2 cocked with the better detective in herself. A cop is shot and killed while pumping gas , so everyone in the police dept is on it and on high alert. Target for being a cop or specifically him? At the same time, everyone is grieving. Looks like it could be a gang initiation, but every clue leads to more questions. The plot was way too convoluted and the culprits’ motives kind of unbelievable. Reminds me more of Agatha Christie than real crime. But this is set in modern times.
I believe the police investigation to be very accurate and detailed. I don't say this from experience but on how the crime was solved. At first all evidence pointed toward gang related but the path of evidence led the investigators in an unexpected direction and eventually the correct conclusion. The conclusion was unexpected during the fast paced investigation. I thank the author for a well written and entertaining narrative without dragging us into foul language and sex.
Madison and Troy are both officers in the same police department but in different areas of expertise. He's SWAT and she's a detective. Their love life is complicated bc they both were cheated on in previous relationships. Solving the murder of a close friend and fellow officer is causing a riff between them. They both finally realize that they need each other and that they should take their relationship to the next level. I look forward to reading more of their story in the sequel.
This one was good and touching. The reason I didn’t give it four stars is that it was complicated. There were SO many people involved and just to much go try and keep up with. Using the last names which i understand cops do but that makes it harder to follow. It was a good ending though once I went back and back to figure out.
I have read all the books in this series and by far this was the best one. I loved how they all pulled together to bring the officers family justice. Reminds me of my motto, " together we stand, divided we fall". Thanks for such a good book maybe they can make a movie out of this one.
A friend and fellow officer has been shot, as Troy and Madison got the call. Losing Barry the officer was personal, and a reminder how dangerous their jobs were. Was it accidental, a random drive by shooting, or had someone planned it. A twisted plot to figure out and bring closer for the wife Joni and fellow officers.
Extremely well-written. Friends, fellow policemen and women seek the killer of one of their own. It reminds us all that the risk their lives every day to keep us safe. I shed tears for the fallen officer and comrades, may they all stay safe.
Great story. A police officer killed on duty in what appears to be a "drive-by". Madison must follow her gut into the why's and who's of the crime whilst fighting her emotions. Personally, I am not a fan of Madison Knight - she annoys me with her carrying-on, - but the stories are well worth reading. This one even moved me to tears at the end.
I enjoyed this book, read it in 1 day. I liked the fact that it didn't matter if I hadn't read any previous ones as Carolyn Arnold has little tit bits of Madison's life before this story. The best bit was trying to work out the puzzle of who did the killing and why, I was off the mark at the end, the killer hadn't even featured in my thought process!
For me, the most interesting thing was the police procedure. Good information to know. The story started well but like some of the other reviewers, I too felt it became convoluted. Towards the end I couldn't remember - and wasn't invested enough to go back and check - which character was being talked about and what had happened a few scenes before.
Exceptionally realistic story about the lives of law enforcement officers and the dedication required to serve. This mystery brings some insight into the dangers involved in police work and the brotherhood shared by those who perform this underserved task. A story not to be forgotten.
I didn't really get into this book until halfway through. Different strands of storyline are woven around each other and it took a while for some things to make sense. By the end, a couple of things still didn't......maybe I'm slow on the uptake but I felt that the story could have been tighter.
Stories around those who serve us being killed in the line of duty are always filled with emotion. I think that Carolyn captured this fantastically in the emotion filled story.
A great read and keeps you captivated trying to work out who the guilty party is and then with the surprise turn of events at the end.
