Novice witch Bobbi Brooks has finally got a handle on her newfound magic—until a strange new murder adds fuel to the fire…
Under Granny’s strict tutelage, Bobbi is learning to master her fire magic. Sort of. Truth is, she’s still got a long way to go if she’s to become the next Guardian of the Rift.
Especially since she’s started to manifest strange new powers, ones no other witch has ever seen. Bobbi’s convinced her birth mother holds the answer, but said mother is missing, and tracking her down is proving impossible.
Not to mention she’s been hired to cater a huge party and has to find a shapeshifting demon on the loose. A witch has only got so many hours in the day. But when a local drifter turns up dead, and the sheriff closes in on Natalie’s husband as the prime suspect, Bobbi will have to make time to clear his name.
Find the the real killer, slay the demon, and deliver a hundred miso-glazed black cod fillets on time. All without accidentally setting someone ablaze. Bobbi just might have too many irons in the fire this time...
Slaying With Fire is a hilarious, full-length paranormal cozy mystery filled with plenty of cryptozoology, conjuring, cheap-shots, cuisine, crime, creepy crawlies, cauldrons, communicative cute critters, and clever cross-examinations. Plus a recipe courtesy of The Devil’s Lunchbox!
I listened to this one on a day trip to GA with hubs in tow. This means he was also gifted with listening to this book.
We both loved it - with the development of Bobbi's powers, the exercise workouts with Grant, and granny's meddling, we found ourselves laughing and guessing until the very end.
The description of this book says it's a "paranormal cozy mystery filled with plenty of sass, snark, sarcasm, spells, snooping, snacks, spirits, and sleuthing," and y'all, that pretty much sums it up.
I do enjoy a witchy cozy mystery, and this one did not disappoint.
What I enjoyed: Bobbi and her grandmother's continued dynamic. These two had me tickled at their interactions. Bobbi continues to want to run a successful business, and Granny wants her to work on developing her powers. I also enjoyed Bobbi's developing relationship with Grant. It's clear these two will end up together at some point.
The mystery is engaging, the snooping is fun, and the spell casting can go awry as Bobbi develops her powers, but this witch cozy mystery is worth every moment spent reading it.
I experienced this as an audiobook, and that definitely enhanced the story.
This is going to appeal to those of you who enjoy Jessica Fletcher with a side of sarcasm, spells, and demon hunting.
When a film crew comes to town to film a documentary about Bigfoot, Bobbi is thrilled to get a catering contract. Things begin to go sideways when a drifter is killed, and Bobbi’s best friend’s husband becomes the prime suspect! Between trying to prove Jim’s innocence, and dealing with the latest demon incursion in town, Bobbi has a lot on her plate.
It’s an enjoyable cosy paranormal mystery series, with an amusing cast of characters and a fun dual storyline; the paranormal issue, vs the murder mystery. No romance storyline as yet… but there are some building blocks for the future.
Recommended for fans of cosy paranormal mystery books.
I highly recommend this imaginative book, and the series in which it is, to readers who like to laugh out loud while reading excellent mysteries. The characters are quirky and snarky, and the plots are very intriguing. Enjoy!
The last thing I expected was how much more I liked this book than the last. The story was spooktacular and the characters amazing. I guess it will come as no surprise when I say you really need th read this series.
As with the first book, it was a simple cute read. Skye has a good sense of humour and it reflects in her writings. Perfect book for a rainy afternoon.
Bigfoot, spider's and a murder, oh my. Bobbi is once again on the hunt for some demon attack if she can keep up with the spiders and trying to help her friend's husband who is the main suspect of being the murderer. Can she figure out the demon, find the killer, get revenge on a bad hair cut?
