The worst day of Mac Faraday's life would become a new beginning.

After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this one wore the expression of a child bursting to the secret: Mac Faraday was the heir to undreamed of fortunes, which were about to lead him to the birthplace of America's Queen of Mystery and a case that will unfold like one of her famous whodunits.

Soon after she moves to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive lakeside resort is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself "Pay Back" begins stalking her. When Katrina is found strangled all evidence points to her terrorist, who is nowhere to be found.

Three months later, the file on her murder is still open when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother's home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother's journal, this retired detective turns private investigator to pick up where the local police have left off to follow the clues to Katrina's killer.

After discovering that the famed mystery writer Robin Spencer was his mother, Mac Faraday was shocked to also learn of her death. But the inheriting of her millions which included Spencer Manor and Spencer Inn in the town of Spencer meant Mac would no longer be a penniless ex-homicide detective struggling to survive the results of a messy divorce.

Arriving in town to take up his inheritance, he found that there had been a murder near his new home – Katrina Singleton, wealthy and single, had been brutally killed three months previously and her death had not been solved. As Mac found himself drawn into the mysteries in Spencer, he discovered there were more twists and secrets than he’d come across in a long time. And when more bodies turned up and the suspects multiplied, Mac knew he had to dig deeply to find answers. His late mother’s journal proved to be a godsend as his detective skills were put to the test…

With the help of Archie, who was Robin’s assistant and Gnarly, the ex-military German Shepherd along with David who was a local detective, Mac realized the secrets and lies that they were uncovering were leading toward a killer who would do anything to keep his or her identity hidden. Would they find the killer before it was too late?

I quite enjoyed this light mystery featuring ex-detective Mac Faraday. There were a lot of characters to keep up with, but after the first few chapters I had no trouble. The pace was fast and the plot interesting - my favourite character would have to be Gnarly! It’s Murder My Son is the first in the Mac Faraday mystery series and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

I enjoyed reading this complicated mystery set in a wealthy community in Maryland and give it four out of five stars. Mac Faraday has resigned from the Washington, D.C police after receiving a huge inheritance. He puts his police skills to use by solving some murders. The plot is full of red herrings and the characters are well written.

The ink isn't even dry on his divorce decree when Mac Faraday learns he's inherited millions of dollars from his biological birth mother, Robin Spencer, a woman he never met. Turns out she's the best selling author of award winning mystery novels and after finally locating the son she gave up for adoption years ago, she's left everything to him. Money, house, her assistant who happens to be a beautiful woman named Archie. When Mac arrives at his new estate in the gated community where his mother lived, Archie is the one who helps him get settled and tells him all about his mother.

Little does Mac, a former homicide detective know, however, that when he arrives he will soon become embroiled in another case, the murder of his next door neighbor, Katrina Singleton. The chief of police is a bumbling idiot who has no idea how to run a murder investigation. While his colleague, David O'Callaghan, seems more adept at the job, he confesses to Mac he was once involved with the dead woman. Then there's the other mystery writer down the street, Travis Turner, who sees himself as God's gift to women and makes a play for nearly every one he meets. His wife is a stuck up snob, cold-hearted and full of herself while his poor assistant, Betsy, is a heavy woman with very little self esteem. She is constantly writing on a notepad when she's not taking care of editing Travis's books and serving as his business manager.

It seems everyone Mac meets has something to hide as he soon finds out while investigating Katrina's murder. He's helped along by Katrina's goofy dog, Gnarly, who's much smarter than he gets credit for. Together, along with Archie, they gather clues and attempt to solve the mystery of Katrina's death.

This was a really good story. It was filled with twists and turns and kept me guessing til the end. I love the canine humor the author includes in her stories. It almost makes me want to get a German Shepherd and I'm a cat person. I also really like Mac and Archie and was glad their relationship was strictly platonic for now. I hate stories where there's instant attraction and the main characters can't control themselves before you're even half way through the book. While I've no doubt something will develop between Mac and Archie (there was a kiss), the build up will be worth the wait. I am looking forward to whatever comes next for these two!

I’ve been reading and loving Lauren’s books for many years. I’m known for jumping into a series anywhere and I first dipped my toes into this series with Cancelled Vows, Book #11. I’ve become very familiar with these characters and grown to love them. I always said I’d go back and meet them from the beginning. And now I have.

You might think the book wouldn’t be as fun as I already know these characters and have read so many of their adventures. Not so. While they did feel familiar, I also felt like I really had met them for the first time. It was fun to see where they began compared to how far they had come in the later books.

I was also curious to see if the writing would be as strong as the later books. I needn’t have worried. This was one entertaining story with plenty of misdirection and a boat load of fun.

You are introduced to the four-legged rascal, Gnarly. Lauren’s non human characters play big roles in her books and provide us with plenty of comic relief. Learned a few new things about this endearing shepherd that I didn’t already know. I still wonder if he’s an alien? LOL

Only nine more books before I catch up to when I first jumped into this series and you can bet I’ll be reading every one.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Synopsis:

Meet Mac Faraday. What started out as the worst day of his life ends up being a completely new beginning for this homicide detective. After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this lawyer looked very unlawyer-like, wearing the expression of a child who was about to reveal a guarded secret. This covert would reveal Mac as heir to fortunes undreamed of and would lead him to Spencer, Maryland, the birthplace of America's Queen of Mystery, with her millions, and an investigation that unfolds like one of her famous mystery novels.

Behind the gated community in Spencer, Maryland, lives Katrina Singleton, a multi-millionaire who thinks her good looks and charm make her untouchable. Soon after she and her husband, Chad, move to the lake she learns that life in Spencer is not all good. For reasons unknown, a strange man is terrorizing Mrs. Singleton. All indications point to the man, who claims he is "Pay Back," when Katrina is found strangled in her lake house. However, three months later the file on her murder is still open with only vague speculations from the local police department.

In walks Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother's home and fortune. Little does he know as he drives his new Dodge Viper up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother's journal and two unsuspecting companions, this newly retired cop puts all his detective skills to work to pick up where the local investigators have left off to follow the clues to Katrina's executer.

My Thoughts:

From the beginning moments of this exciting mystery, I felt a connection with each of the characters as they were introduced. Who doesn't dream of inheriting millions from someone--anyone? To discover an unknown birth mother who is famous and rich must be everyone's dream.

But even if you're one of those people who doesn't dream of riches, imagine yourself plunged right into the midst of a murder mystery, almost before you unpack your bags. If you're a former police detective, accustomed to solving murder mysteries, you might just believe you've landed in an exciting land of adventure--one that really gets your juices flowing.

As I rapidly turned the pages, I was constantly trying to figure out who did what, and also wondering about the motives. Uncovering the motives was a gradual revelation, which is how I like my mysteries to unfold. With a whole canvas of possible suspects to examine, I kept busy trying to figure things out until the very end.

A mystery story that focuses on mystery writers is an intriguing twist, which I enjoyed. What writer doesn't love reading about other writers? In the midst of all this mystery, a little romance tugs away at our main hero; in the end, he just might get the girl of his dreams.

So who among the residents of this very high-end community might have killed Katrina? And how did the killer access her home without triggering the alarms? What other residents are keeping very big secrets, especially secrets that could totally destroy their lives? And what role does a German shepherd named Gnarly play in the story, and how does he help bring evidence to light?

These and other questions intrigued me and kept me reading late into the night. I give "It's Murder, My Son (Mac Faraday Mysteries)" five stars...I'd award more if I could.

So many people here have heaped so much praise on “It’s Murder, My Son” that I feel embarrassed about not having anything good to say about it. I guess it’s a matter of taste. For me, it’s a lightweight mystery with a hero who lacks any real depth as a character and who shows little or no development within the story. He is rich and good looking, and he ‘quips’ his way through the action. Unfortunately, I didn’t even find the quips either witty or clever. I think the author has tapped into an approach and style that appeals to the vast majority of readers, and I am not in that vast majority. Give it a try, and I will look elsewhere.

A murder next door to Mac, earlier connected murders, a small town filled with wealthy, cunning residents, a detective who is now a millionaire and also the illegitimate son of a recently deceased mystery-writing author, Robin Spencer, make up part of the "crew" in this well-written, intriguing murder mystery. And.....we can't forget Gnarly, a huge German Shepherd who steals food from anyone he can, causes havoc in the neighborhood, and even helps find clues for the murder investigations.

The characters in this book are absolutely wonderful. You will fall in love the minute you meet Mac, the new millionaire, and Archie, Robin Spencer's assistant. Gnarly is a little scary and mischievous, but he grows on you. The small town of Spencer seems to be a dream town, but it is a haven for infidelity, a corrupt police force, and a creative author's twist of having mystery writers as characters. The eccentric, well-to-do neighbors enhance the storyline and bring a special focus to the plot. Each character has a background that won't quit and a background that you will love.

Amusing, frightening, and unusual things do happen during the investigation that will keep your interest and keep you guessing until the last page. Just when you think you have the mystery solved, another character and more clues pop up leaving you still unsure. Lauren Carr is a master at and has a great knack for keeping you guessing. A great ending and lots of surprises make this book a treat for mystery lovers.

If you haven't guessed it yet, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give a huge, "gnarly" 5/5 for IT'S MURDER, MY SON and an equally-sized thank you to Ms. Carr for allowing me the pleasure of this read.

Be on the Lookout for her newest book: SHADES OF MURDER.

This may be the first book in the Mac Faraday’s mysteries, but I have met the characters before and had to know how they came together.

Gnarly…uproariously funny and lovable Gnarly. Once you meet him, you will never forget him.

Lauren Car makes it difficult to figure out the whodunit, but what a wild ride to the conclusion. No question, Lauren is a master when it comes to mystery, suspense, police procedures and romance. Characters to die for, but you have to be careful who you fall for in her novels, they may not make it to the end.

Filled with humor and a canine that’s smarter than some people, Gnarly had me totally absorbed in his hijinks. Bodies galore, and even some old murders will be solved.

Can find no fault…give me more.

New authors are always risky to pick up. You never know what to expect - kind of like a first (blind)date. You don't know if you will be a good fit, but having this niggling feeling in the back of your head that this might not turn out the way you want. That was me going into this book. But I'm happy to say, it turned out great! This book was everything that I wanted and more. It was light, quick yet a bit intricate and even more surprisingly fun.

For me, Gnarly the German Shepherd made the entire book - I just love him to bits! ;)

Highly recommended!

It’s Murder My Son
Author: Lauren Carr
Reviewed by Fran Lewis

Imagine being left 270 million dollars, a mansion, hotel and lots of property and an added bonus of one German shepherd who has a definite mind of his own named Gnarly. Added to that you inherited an editor and researched named Archie, one policeman who turns out to be your brother and a family history that you won’t believe. But, what does excite our new millionaire detective and son of a mystery writer, the murder that took place three months prior to him coming to live in Deep Creek Lake. Now, what more could Mac Faraday asked for. Well: Just wait and see because the fun has just begun, the intrigue and twists have not been unwound and the story will keep you braced and enveloped to the printed page. It’s Murder My Son by author Lauren Carr tells what happens when one detective comes to live with the rich, famous and affluent and becomes embroiled in real live murder.

But, coming to live in Spencer Manor would awaken Mac’s drive to help solve a case, get closer to his half-brother David who is having problems dealing with his boss an inept police chief and becomes the number one prime suspect. With the help of his mother’s live in companion, Archie, on smart dog named Gnarly things begin to heat up as our German shepherd, who definitely steals the show in many ways, arrives back after one of his wanderings with a head. Archie lives in the guest cottage and she and Mac become fast friends. So, why would the police chief close a definite murder case and not want to know who killed Katrina Singleton and who exactly was this man called Pay Back that was stalking her? As Mac and his half-brother David are first on the scene when Gnarly delivers the skull, Chief Roy Phillips turns up with none other than Travis Turner, the male equivalent of Jessica Fletcher or Miss Marple and defers to his expertise as a mystery writer rather than the two experienced men. One police chief that expected to fraternize with the rich and famous and never deal with a major murder case and one crime writer that thinks he has all of the answers leaving everyone to wonder why he would not want Mac to assist since he has more experience than all of them put together. Jealously, insecurities or just being unprepared and not wanting to look bad!

As Mac and Archie are interviewing housekeepers and Gnarly presents them with a human skull, things heat up, as the attention should focus on just who the head belongs to and what the connection might be. An unknown assailant who had access to her home and never set off any alarms killed Katrina. Her first husband was killed shortly after their wedding supposedly by the man called Pay Back but was he? As David begins to delve closer in the case and recheck earlier facts and activities the police chief decides to fire him. Is this a cover up or is something else behind it?

Mac’ mother Robin Spencer was a mystery writer and kept a journal of her writing, her gooks and thoughts. How this journal helps to solve the murders and the clues it provides will definitely surprise the reader, keep you guessing until the very end and I bet you will never figure it out.

As David delves into Katrina’s murder evidence comes out that leads the Police Chief to turn the tables on him and he becomes the prime suspect. Spending time with Mac and explaining his relationship with Katrina makes things worse. Added to that Travis Turner spills some information to the Chief and things start to heat up for David and Mac has his work cut out for him to help his half brother out of the mess he created and much more.

Sometimes the dead can speak to you without your knowing it as Mac reads his mother’s journals, items out of his own safe, clues from her novels, how the killer managed to by pass the security system, and just who committed these multiple murders. Did Katrina kill Nick for the money? Did she and Pay Back conspire to kill him? Both are dead! Why? But the chief wants the case closed but is forced to pursue it. Why did Katrina give him a large contribution? What was really behind this and why did the chief destroy two pages in the forensic files?

As David looks into the files, tries to find out what really happened the Chief of Police becomes obstructive and decides to block him. Each time he moves ahead the sends him ten steps back in his own pursuit to keep him from finding out the truth, not wanting Mac anywhere near his case and keeping things on an even keel between himself, the mayor and those who provide him with lucrative donations.

Author Lauren Carr created a believable, likeable millionaire that stays true to who he really is in spite of the fact that he is filthy rich. Shoved into the life of Donald Trump, Bill Gates or even Warren Buffet, our retired detective does not become jaded or so engulfed in his new life style that he loses sight of what is really important and that is clearing David of the murders, finding out who is behind the petty thefts, and why the police chief wants to close these cases and keep them unsolved.

Delving further brings out more than Mac and David expect when a hit is put out on them by a powerful man and the end result is five gang members that are dead and more murders to solve. Who is Pay Back? Why did so many people really dislike Katrina Singleton and why does her husband show no remorse, sadness or empathy for her being murdered?

Characters that are individual and one dog that knows how to take down the bad guys and protect the good ones this novel keeps the reader in total suspense until you find out who Pay Back is and why this person committed the murders. But, this killer is far from over as more bodies are found and more murders are committed. One explosion takes out the Hardwicks and a murder made to look like suicide Travis Turner’s assistant. Just who wants all their skeletons buried six feet deep? Did Katrina kill her first husband and make the rest up? What secrets and hidden pasts caused the police chief to disappear and the Mayor to go on the run? Who can Mac trust if anyone? Deep Creek Lake is anything but a serene and gated rich community. The closer you get the more dangerous it seems for its residents.

From dishonest politicians, mobsters, blackmailers, a poodle friend of Gnarly whose owners would like him put down, a jealous wife, a writer who plays sleuth and one man named Mac who will never gives up until he solved the murders. With one lovable named Gnarly creating havoc along the way this novel keeps you pinned down and in your seat, glued to the printed page until the dramatic surprise ending. As the mystery writer would put all the clues, evidence and forensics together and the pieces of the puzzle in place this one will never really come together. Why? Who murdered Betsy, Katrina, the Hardwicks and who took out the Mayor and the Police Chief as well as two cold case murders from the 90’s? As Mac and David work together along with one smart German Shepherd and Archie you won’t believe the end result as the twists, turns, rewrites, scripts and surprises are more intricate than a Perry Mason or Poirot Mystery. Watch out mystery writers: Lauren Carr is the new star on the horizon. What is next for Mac, Archie and David: You’ll have to wait for my review of her next book.

Everybody by now knows that I thoroughly enjoy series, so it's no surprise that It's Murder, My Son gets a high recommendation from me! But first the storyline and characters have to have grabbed me! And they did!

Mac Faraday found out very recently that he was the son of a famous fiction writer! She had made arrangements to meet him once before she died and then left her entire estate to him. His mother had been involved with a married man, from the town where she lived so that Mac was finding out much about his roots when he moved into his mother's estate.

He also inherited a live-in companion of his mother's...she had been her friend and assistant during her career and now Archie, who lived, in a separate cottage on the estate, was finding that she was thoroughly enjoying having a man around; that is, this man! Mac had been a cop--inheriting had saved him from filing bankruptcy for several reasons...

Mac also inherited Gnarly!

But Gnarly, a German Shepherd, is not just a favorite pet that adds fun to the book. Mac is told that he is a genius, for a dog. You see, Gnarly just may have been "on the job..." Of course, his job was as he, himself, perceived it; in fact, he had been dishonorably discharged from the service because he didn't always obey his superiors (and now Mac!) Needless to say, I loved Gnarly!

In fact, it was Gnarly that started the whole investigation when he was observed chewing on a round object, which turned out to be a human skull...

Mac met his half-brother after that find; but neither Mac nor David said anything to each other, both wondering if the other knew that David's father was also Mac's. David had been first on the scene when the head was found. And then Mac met Chief Roy Phillips, his father's resplacement. He had brought along Travis Turner, a novelist! Mac knew immediately that the Chief was suspect--mainly of being totally unprepared to handle a murder case, if he had to use the assumed expertise of a novelist! Especially when he paid no attention to the fact that Mac had more experience than anyone there...

It was already assumed that the head belonged to Katrina Singleton, a neighbor who had been missing for some time. Of course, her husband had died earlier, supposedly killed by a stalker after Katrina! With a couple more bodies discovered later, the need to figure out what was going on had everybody involved. But then David started rechecking earlier activities and he was fired by Chief Phillips!

Of course that didn't stop Mac and he from continuing their search--and soon what they discovered was going to blow the whole town open!

One of the items inherited by Mac from his mother was her journals. It was interesting to have her son follow the trail she had found and to pull items, such as a necklace, out of his own safe that was an important clue. There were also clues from her former books, as some of the things that happened were discovered to be methods of murder in her books. This whodunit has multiple murders, multiple murderers, and lots of suspects for readers to consider, And even in death, Mac's mother is showing him that It's Murder, My Son!

Lauren Carr has won a new fan with her first book. It will be fun to see what Mac and Archie face in the next Mac Faraday Mystery and to once again hear Mac shout, "I'm going to kill you Gnarly!" Gnarly and I both know he doesn't mean it...Gnarly is just on the job... A Mystery Lover Must-Read in my opinion!

It’s Murder, My Son by Lauren Carr is an entertaining mystery romp. It’s perfect for a rainy day read or a relaxing weekend.

The first book in the Mac Faraday mystery series, It’s Murder, My Son, begins with a new chapter in former homicide detective Mac Faraday’s life. Recently divorced, he finds himself the heir to a multimillion dollar fortune of a late mystery author, a woman who was the birth mother he never knew. And along with the money and property, he inherits a couple of murders and a whole lot of trouble.

I enjoyed reading this novel. It had a nice pace, charming and believable characters and reasonably good conflict, while never losing its sense of fun. The main character of Mac Faraday was especially likable and I was pleased with the way the author had him interact with his new world. There was no smooth transition to the world of money; he behaved like an uncomfortable fish out of water. I also liked the main female character/love interest of Archie; she’s smart funny and there’s a nice chemistry with Mac.

I did have a few slight problems with the storyline in that I found some of the plot points a bit easy to figure out, although the author does give the reader plausible reasons as to why the characters haven’t come to the same conclusions. Also, there were one or two twists that I didn’t see coming, so the plotline considerations are minor quibbles. Overall I can give this book a recommend.

If you have read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I love Lauren Carr's Mac Faraday mysteries. It's Murder, My Son is no exception.

Mac Faraday has just inherited millions from his mother who had given him up for adoption. Now, he is a retired police officer living it up. The ironic thing is that is exactly what his famous mystery writing mother's character, Forsythe did. Coincidence? I don't it especially when Mac finds himself solving a few murders and exposing many secrets of the town.

The characters in Ms. Carr's book are wonderful. I have to say, and I think others will agree, that Gnarly is the best. The German Shepherd saves the day even when he is being sneaky and less than honorable. Each character is unique with such depth and humor. Mac is down to earth. Arnie knows how to live the good life without being a snob. David is one you just want to hug and hope he is single. And the neighbors? I'd have killed them, too.

Did I figure out who the murderer was? Yes and no. The story was so well crafted with so many twists and turns that there was no one solution. There were many problems and many paths each one took. Absolutely loved it.

You cannot be bored with a Lauren Carr book. I'd kill for the next one. (Hope I don't encounter Mac Faraday along the way).

Note: This book was presented as part of a book tour with no expectation of a positive review.

Not a cosy mystery

This is not a cosy mystery but it felt like one. This was a delight to read. You have your retired homicide detective, more than a few murders, a couple of mobsters, non - explicit sex, many characters who are not what they appear to be, a touch of romance, a bunch of clues that really keep you guessing and one very smart dog. All added together, they make a great read.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In this book, It’s Murder, My Son, author Lauren Carr introduces readers to the Mac Faraday Mysteries. Mac comes to the town of Spencer to claim the inheritance left to him by his mother. Immediately he finds out about the tragic murder of one of the town of Spencer’s wealthiest Katrina Singleton and of course being an investigator, he can’t stand by and not get involved in solving this murder.

I love suspense stories so I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Mac is an interesting man, full of surprises and I enjoyed following his investigation throughout the book. There are many other characters, expertly crafted by Ms. Carr, and I enjoyed watching them develop throughout the story as well. Of course there are always the characters you don’t like, but the story wouldn’t be the same without them, right? My favorite character by far has to be the furry friend, the adorable and very smart Gnarly. Watching this famous dog act out his character was so fun and entertaining and I can’t wait to read more books with this special furry friend.

Over all this is a very good read. There are many twists and turns that kept me biting my nails as I read, because I couldn’t figure out whodunnit! And author Lauren Carr does and fantastic job of weaving it all together to come up with a very nice and surprising ending. This one is a five star for me!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

So yet again I am in the minority with regards my rating. This book had all the makings of a great story, it just had too many players, each player with too much going on. Half the players and half the drama and it probably would have been an excellent book. After some thought I am changing my rating to one star.

It’s Murder, My Son – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

A noise outside made her jump out of the recliner. She glanced at the clock. Almost nine. Could Chad have decided to come out when I mentioned my appointment with the divorce lawyer? Maybe he does love my money more than he loves Rachel. She listened. Nothing except the wind signaling the blizzard’s approach. Maybe I should call David? No. It wouldn’t look good if Chad found him here. He’s already suspicious. The German shepherd began scratching at the back door. Not again, you damn dog! When you aren’t wanting out or in, you’re digging up the back yard. With a groan, she pulled herself out of the recliner and let the dog out onto the patio. As long as she was up, she poured herself another martini and admired her reflection in the mirror behind the bar before returning to her seat for another sitcom. Her mind sucked in by the television, Katrina was unprepared to fight when her killer attacked and pinned her down by her throat.'
“Did you really think I was going to let you leave?” she heard through the roar in her ears while gasping her last breath.

The front foyer of Spencer Manor stretched up two stories to the cathedral ceiling paneled in cedar. Granite slabs made up the floors throughout the home, including the three steps that led down to the dining room which opened up onto the deck overlooking the lake. Colorful afghans were draped across leather furniture in the living room, which was twice the size of the one in the home Mac’s ex-wife had won from him thirty days earlier. Stone fireplaces commanded every room. Every window and door provided a view of Deep Creek Lake. This was just a small portion of what Mac Faraday, policeman and illegitimate son of mystery writer Robin Spence, inherited at her death.
When Robin’s solicitor tracked Mac down, he was just getting over a divorce where the court awarded his wife, who was having an affair with the assistant district attorney, their home as well as everything else of value. Now Mac finds himself with more money than he could ever imagine. He has become a retired policeman and multi-millionaire overnight. But that’s not all he has become. Mac also finds out that he has a ½ brother who not only lives in Spencer but who is also a policeman, as was their father. And then Mac finds himself to be the owner of Gnarly a German Shepherd retired from the military with a dishonorable discharge. Oh yeah, he also finds himself working with the police to solve several murders, both old and new.
It’s Murder, My Son was a hard puzzle to put together. It starts out with one murder which leads to another then another and so on. But are they all connected or individual crimes? About half way into It’s Murder, My Son I just knew I had determined who committed at least 2 of the murders. My suspect had no alibi where everyone else did. I will tell you that I was wrong. Author Lauren Carr took this book all the way to the end before allowing you to see the who, the why and the how. Great Book and I hope to read more Mac Faraday Mysteries.

It's Murder, My Son is an engaging murder mystery series debut by author Lauren Carr. Mac Faraday is a newly retired homicide detective whose difficult divorce and subsequent near bankruptcy leaves him at a loose end until he inherits millions from his biological mother, a famously successful mystery novelist. Mac moves into her luxury home in an exclusive gated community greeted by his mother's assistant, Archie and and an ungainly mutt named Gnarly, hoping to get to know his half brother David and acclimatise to his new found wealth. But when Gnarly brings home a decapitated head and Mac learns of the mysterious murder next door his cop instincts are aroused and he finds himself embroiled in a string of assassinations, unexplained petty thefts and corrupt small town politics.
With a plethora of suspects, obscured motives and victims who have contributed to their own messy death It's Murder, My Son is a cleverly plotted murder mystery that is part cosy and part detective story. There is not just one murder to solve but several, both old and new, and I was intrigued by the twists and turns that connected the investigations concluding in a satisfyingly surprising ending. The novel is well written, suspenseful yet lightened by touches of humor.
I liked Mac from the first, a slightly world weary, principled detective his interest is less in the sudden money he has inherited and more in learning about his biological mother and getting to know his half brother. He becomes involved in the murders not just because it is almost literally dropped in his lap but he sincerely believes in doing the right thing. His style is laconic yet he is shrewd and not afraid to take action. As side kicks go, Gnarly is one to enjoy - the German Shepard is a mixture of mischief and canine smarts and I really enjoyed how Carr involved him into the storyline. The other characters are well developed, not only Archie and David but also the victims and villains of the story.

It's Murder, My Son is an entertaining mystery with cosy charm. Fans of mysteries who enjoy being challenged by an intelligent plot supported by engaging characters are sure to be satisfied with this novel. I look forward to reading the second in the series Old Loves Die Hard.

This novel introduces the incredibly fortunate Mac Faraday. He's just been rescued from the brink of bankruptcy following a messy divorce by learning that his biological mother, famous mystery writer Robin Spencer, has died and left him millions. Mac buys a fancy sports car and drives to his new estate on exclusive Deer Creek Lake in Spencer, Maryland. In addition to his fabulous new stone and cedar mansion, Mac finds his mother's dog, Gnarly, her editor, Archie, a half-brother David--and a recent murder to investigate--right next door to his new home! The latter is just what a newly retired homicide detective needs, and it turns out he needs the others as well.

Carr has begun an excellent new series with It's Murder, My Son. The plot is satisfyingly complex, full of twists that make it nearly impossible to guess the murderer's identity. The characters, none of them superfluous, are interesting and, in some cases, quite humorous. My favorite by far is the German shepherd, Gnarly, who initially seems like a nuisance to Mac, but quickly becomes a vital partner in the investigation--and Mac's life! Gnarly has a sixth sense when it comes to rescuing Mac from sticky situations, even such small ones as hiring the right maid. Carr doles out just the right amount of background information on Mac's mother Robin Spencer, mainly through her journals, but also through her editor, the beautiful Archie, who lives in the guest house and soon spends a lot of time with Mac. Overall, this novel is well worth reading for mystery lovers! Highly recommended.

Carr is an exceptional writer, keeping the reader glued to the pages as her murder mystery unfolds. I was drawn into the story from the very first page as it jumps directly into the action with Katrina’s murder. What I really enjoyed about this novel, aside from the thrill and suspense it created, is that Carr created every character with a purpose. There are no space filling characters within the novel at all; each person somehow connects back to the murder in some way and plays a vital role in figuring out the truth behind the many murders that ensue throughout the novel.

I really enjoyed the character of Mac Faraday. Faraday, having come into millions of dollars, is thrust into the midst of a rich life, yet he doesn’t allow such extravagances to go to his head. He is an extremely likable character with a nose for detective work, refusing to give up, even when it seems the trail has run cold.

Even Gnarly, Faraday’s inherited German shepherd, plays an important role within the story, which surprised me as I hadn’t realized his importance within the novel prior to certain events that unfold within the story. Carr’s ability to tightly knit together her characters and storyline, along with love, betrayal, mystery, and intrigue, is a testament to her sheer writing capabilities...

Mac Faraday left his divorce hearing hating all lawyers, but the one who chased him down changed his life forever. As the heir to the Robin Spencer, "America's Queen of Mystery", fortune, he can lead a life of leisure. But as a former homicide detective, he has the skills to unravel the real-life murder mystery that threaten to consume his new life.

Lauren Carr's first installment in her Mac Faraday series is an engrossing mystery that hooks the reader in the first chapter and doesn't let go until the very end. Although I guessed bits and pieces of the solution, the complete solution was complicated enough to keep the most veteran mystery reader hanging on for the last bit of the answer. Great series.

Lauren Carr's debut mystery novel, It's Murder, My Son, is an engaging and intriguing story. Carr introduces us to Mac Faraday, a divorced, retired police officer who inherits his biological mother's estate when she dies. As he struggles to accept that his mother was a rich, famous mystery writer and to embrace his new life as a wealthy man, he's drawn to the mystery surrounding a recent murder in his mother's upscale neighborhood. Gnarly, the German Shepard Mac inherits from his mother, was also the murder victim's dog. He often steals the show with his antics which also lead the clues to solve the mystery. The reader will want to shout at Mac to pay attention to what the dog is telling him. Gnarly and Mac make a great team. There's enough undercurrent of attraction between Mac and his mother's assistant, Archie, to leave the reader guessing where the relationship will go in future books. It's Murder, My Son has a few moments will clearly appeal to the dreamer in all of us. Mac's inheritance right after his messy divorce is one of them. As the book unfolds, the reader will come to like Mac because his vast inheritance seems to have little effect on his sense of justice and morality. In It's Murder, My Son, Carr immerses the reader into the lives of her well-developed characters and the secrets they're struggling to keep.

It's Murder My Son is a great murder mystery! The author, Lauren Carr, writes a smooth and engaging story that keeps you reading. It's not an easy mystery that you can figure out in ten minutes, it's a novel that gets you thinking.

Mac Faraday is a great main character. His life has turned upside down, first for the worst with his divorce and then for the better with his inheritance. But does a low-key ex-detective know what to do with all that money? It's fun going on the journey with him as he learns to adjust to his new home, new money, a new dog, and a new assistant.

The other characters are also well written. Each one has his/her own quirks and there are lots of witty remarks tossed around to keep the subject of murder from getting too heavy.

This is definitely the book to read for any mystery lover. Do not hesitate to snap this one up! Also, she has the second book in the Mac Faraday series out already, Old Loves Die Hard. I haven't read it yet, but will do so and have the review up in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned!

Full review here!

Big thanks to the author for mailing me the physical copy of this novel. Here is my honest review:

I enjoyed the mystery behind this novel. It was predictable and unpredictable all at the same time. The initial murder created the mystery, but then several other people ended up dead and Mac had to figure it out. Speaking of Mac..

He's just gotten divorced and lost his job, so when he finds out that his biological mother has died and left him $270,000,000 he's just fine. He moves into her house and meets Archer, his mother's female book editor who stays in the house too, and Gnarly, the genius German Shepherd. David, his half brother, comes along, and he's a police officer who helps him figure out the murders. It gets very convoluted after that. And there wasn't enough romance in there for me! Just sayin'.

Thanks again to the author for sending me this novel!

I was drawn to this novel because the setting is Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, about 15 miles from where I grew up. But, once I started reading the mystery, I was drawn into the story, and thoroughly enjoyed the story from the very beginning talking about a severe winter storm to hit around midnight...Oh! how I remember those severe winter storms in that area.

I loved reading about the places I use to visit. I didn't need to try to imagine what these places looked like, I was familiar with each of them. It was like a visit for most of this past week while I was reading this book. Thanks Lauren for a fun visit to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. This book is part of my Kindle Library and I enjoyed this book so I awarded it 5*****

Mac Faraday is a great guy who is left on the ropes by a cheating wife. Just when he thinks his life has gone to the dogs he finds out he is the sole beneficiary to his "Agetha Christy-esc", mothers empire. Even though she gave him up at birth she still leaves him her $200 million dollar life. When he moves into her estate a murder mystery pulls on his detective strings and he is off to the races. Oh, there is a crazy dog too.

This was a pretty good who done it with a interesting plot. A nice start to a series, not quite a cozy but clean enough. A good mystery with appealing characters. All of the books in the series are not available on Audible but still worth a listen. Today it is on sale for $2.99.

This is a fast-paced whodunit that keeps you guessing right to the end! I enjoyed the book because I liked the characters right from the start. Mac Faraday is trying to figure out his new life and happens to come across some murder cases that keep him occupied! I was happy for him that he had this case on his door step because I knew it was just what he needed to keep himself busy. And at that moment I realized how well I was connecting with the characters! That makes this a book that I must recommend to all mystery lovers!

This is a great first book in this series! Mac Faraday just lost everything in a divorce and was about to file for bankruptcy when he finds out his mother who put him up for adoption so many years ago and was a famous murder mystery writer has left him millions as well as her home and hotel. Now Mac who used to be a cop moves into her home and finds himself in the middle of a real mystery.

This book will keep you turning pages to see if Mac Faraday can solve this mystery with help from some people in town.

I thought this was a great little murder mystery. We had red herrings, murders a plenty, questions going no where, and characters that were like a train wreck...you just had to watch.

Very enjoyable to sit down and read a book that has all my favorite elements. The story was well timed and well written. I sat down with this at 10:30 at night and couldn't put it down. I finished it at 3:30am and then had to drag myself to work today.

I will make a note of this author, as I have just become a fan
