Underdeveloped and extremely near-sighted sophomore Dennis Enders is recruited to manage a new girls' basketball team at their school in Bartley, Iowa. The girls adopt him readily and his gentle nature, kindness, and vulnerability make him an instant favorite. They can't believe he was overlooked and ignored for nine years in school. But bootleggers, drug dealers, rapists, and kidnappers all seem to have it out for Dennis and members of his team. They survive in a world rife with danger and learn intimacy and love from and for each other.
Great story of a high school boy that was bullied the previous year by the boys basketball team. A female coach asks him to be the girls team manager. With trepidation he agrees and this wonderful story takes off. The three bullies from the year before are planning to pay I'm back from their expulsion from school. The rest of the story is intertwined with the bullies, the girls team he manages and his father who wants to go after the bullies. It is a really great read and worth the time. Deon Maybe has written another one!
