Can a mysterious beauty and her stoic heroine escape their pasts for love?
Nan Kellers is running away from herself. She made a lot of bad decisions, and her most recent one was renting a sailboat with a storm on the horizon. On the brink of death, Nan gets rescued by a strong, gorgeous woman. Maybe her luck is finally starting to change?
Cass Finnegan lives in a lighthouse with her young daughter Annalee, just trying to get by as a single mother while dodging the judgments of her neighbors. One day, a beautiful woman washes up on the beach. Annalee thinks she's a mermaid, but Cass wonders if there isn't something even more special about her.
An immediate, red-hot passion ignites between Nan and Cass, in spite of the secrets both of them are fighting to keep hidden. But for two scarred women, can love ever win? Neither of them can hide from their pasts for long. When it all comes crashing down, Annalee is caught in the middle...and the result is far more dangerous than any of them feared.
Finding Her is part of the Cape Summer Romances, a collection of stand-alone romances that take place in the same town.
Marian Snowe is an author of lesbian romantic fiction. She can often be found talking to trees, examining flower petals with a magnifying glass, or venturing with small steps into the frigid New England ocean. She lives with her vivacious, adventure-loving wife, Ruby Grandin, and two cats. She loves to settle down in a meadow or at her desk by a window (with a good view of the birdfeeder!) to write stories about ladies in love.
With her life in upheaval, Nan wants nothing but a fresh start, to be left alone and to take stock of her life. Somewhere far away where no one knows her. That decision, a storm at sea and a lighthouse keeper changed her life forever. But life doesn’t always go according to plan. There are a lot of secrets between Nan and Cass. Despite their attraction, both have a hard time to trust each other completely. Can they find a safe harbor and take a chance at love? This was a sweet romance with lovable characters, a beautiful setting and an engaging storyline. The little girl was adorable and a little wise beyond her years. I love her attempts to meddle in their love life. It was heartwarming and so cute. All in all, a great read.
This is not my first book by her, so I had high expectations and was not disappointed. From the start I liked the way the title matches the plot quite literally. Also as a kid I already dreamt of living in an isolated lighthouse, so there was a lot already speaking for this book.
The run down actress with problems really isn’t a new concept, but Marian handles it in a very good way, making her attractive and lovable as a human being in spite of the past self she is trying to leave behind. Of course she isn’t perfect …
Then there is Cass, divorced and with a daughter, who is the lighthouse keeper. She has settled for being on her own after a difficult divorce. She tries her best, but she isn’t perfect either. The best and most lovable character here is Annalee, the daughter. She actually holds everything together for the adults with all the wisdom her eight years and her already amazing personality can give.
This is a slow-burn but intense romance, due to the “baggage” of both our main ladies, misunderstandings, or better misinterpretations of what one or the other might say and outright self-destructionism need to be overcome. But there is Annalee …
Read for yourself how this brilliant story finds its resolution, it’s more than just well worth it.
This is my sixth book by this author (though maybe I should say fifth solo work, as the sixth was written with Ruby Grandin). Overall rating of 4.242, including all six books, 4.19 if only counting solo work.
I saw this book when it came out, at least the cover, but Snowe is in my ‘occasionally look to see if anything interesting to read’ instead of my ‘auto-buy’ category. This book is stated to be part of the ‘Cape Summer Romances’, but I do not think anything else I’ve read, so far, are located in Cape Summer Maine. Cape Summer being a place, not a time of year. Since the book I read took place in mid-September.
Right, so. This book.
Disgraced Celebrity Leaves Drug Rehab Behind to Hide in Sleepy Seaside Town!
The book opens with an individual named Nan attempting to sail a rented sailboat. She’s not sailed in a long time and, if I recall correctly, had only one training course. Possibly 40 years ago. Saying that I need to note that I do not know any of the ages of the people involved. Back to sailing.
As might be expected, Nan got into trouble. Though it was partially her fault, partially not. One: she sailed outside the area she was told to sail in. Two: the storm that hit, it was said at some point (thought?, by which character?), that the storm would have caused problems for even a very experienced sailor. The storm tossed her sail boat around, then turned it upside down. Nan ended up in the water but not trapped under the boat or in the sail. She battled the sea, the storm, and the current to scrape herself against rocks, seaweed, and eventually a beach. Whereupon she lost consciousness.
Annalee, a youngster who might be aged somewhere around 7 to 11 (if her age was given, I didn’t pay enough attention to retain it) finds a ‘mermaid’ on the beach and excitedly tells her mother Cass Finnegan. Since Annalee is the kind to constantly be inside her own imagination, Cass doesn’t immediately realize that someone/something real was on the beach, but she eventually wanders down and finds a passed out woman. Who she drags up to her lighthouse to save (Annalee and Cass live in a light house).
Nan doesn’t immediately explain who she is, though notes how she ended up there (rented sail boat, she ended up in water), and gives indications that she might be hiding from something. Cass is suspicious but doesn’t demand knowledge. She also hides some things of her own – which have a lot more immediate impact on the story than Nan’s hidden backstory (i.e., Cass’s ).
The three, Nan, Annalee, and Cass, grow close while Nan recuperates. Certain events from both Cass’s and Nan’s past cause issues, though, to disrupt the happy little grouping.
For those who care about such things: the kid, Annalee, was an asset instead of a liability to the story/plot/etc.
Didn't love it. The drama was stretched very far, and very thin, and my believability in the connection between the couple waned because of the drama that ensued. Kindle Unlimited read.
Cass is a local living a quiet life in a lighthouse in Maine with her 8 year old Daughter Annalee. Nan is a literal washed up actress, who washes ashore after taking a sailing boat out in a storm. She's running from her past of hookups and drugs, and has been in rehab trying to sort herself out. Annalee thinks she's a mermaid and lets her imagination run wild. Cass takes her in to make sure she is OK, sensing she is in need of help, but has no real idea who she is. Even though she is letting her stay at the guest cottage nearby.
Cass is incredibly kind but a bit naive in a lot of ways. What I found weird was the town gossip criticizes Cass for being a hermit, despite her doing everything for her daughter. She has a typically dramatic ex-wife who is meddling in her life, spreading more gossip and trying to get more custody and being a quote "snit".
Things between Cass and Nan heat up, as they spend heaps of time together, yet neither really spelling out specifics of their lives. Nan not telling her about her celebrity pitfalls, and Cass in return not telling the full story of her relationship with Holly going downhill... It all just felt a bit too forced when it kept being brought up in discussions, but both never ready to share - despite jumping into the sack with each other and Nan completely immersing herself into their life, with Nan doing absolutely everything with Cass and Annalee, from school dropoffs, to outings, to meals, EVERYTHING... And Annalee actively trying to set them up, with the help of the meddling townfolk - who then say it's great to see Cass out and about, and Annalee socializing more...? what the?
I personally couldn't imagine having an 8 year with a manipulative ex looming over, and allowing that much time to be spent with an unknown adult and potential partner - without insisting on information clearly being withheld to be spilled, immediately. But hey, clearly I'm not the stuff of romance novels. (I mean, that's obvious anyway, right? lol)
Truths get revealed in the most dramatic of fashions and a runaway black moment ensues. I struggled to care at that point. It just made no sense for anyone to be acting the way they were.
Huge thank you to narrator Sophie Daniels for the Audible code for this one! I put it to good use, and very quickly I might add. I think I finished this one in under 24 hours.
Nan Kellers has made a lot of bad decisions, mainly using drugs to cope with her life. An actress since childhood, she has decided to take a break post rehab, and her latest in a long line of terrible decisions is taking a sailboat out with a storm looming. When she shipwrecks, she’s rescued by an adorable little girl who thinks she’s a mermaid and her lighthouse keeper mother, who also happens to be incredibly attractive. As the two grow closer together, Nan has to decide if she’s all in and share her past while trying to avoid notoriety in town. Lighthouse keeper Cass has problems of her own and wants to trust Nan but must keep her daughter safe at all costs.
Can we just talk for a minute about how my lifelong dream has always been to be a lighthouse keeper? I mean, I obviously wanted a highly romanticized version of that job, one that involves lots of time for reading and napping with long periods of isolation from others. I never imagine that arduous task of keeping all the moving parts from breaking down and the horrific storms off the coast, but I digress. I loved Cass and kind of wanted to be her.
This one is pretty short, 6.5 hours, but as my gif above implies, it’s back with drama. I LOVE melodrama in my books, which is where I like to keep it, between the pages and out of my life. There’s instant chemistry between Nan and Cass, but there’s a lot of back and forth regarding their feelings and relationships, and Nan’s secret is dragged out a little more than I would have thought, but that’s not necessarily bad. It’s revealed way more dramatically, and for the purposes of the romantic plot, I’m cool with that.
It’s steamy enough, which I am always here for, and Cass’ daughter, Annalee, is too precious. I thought the climax was a little over the top, considering the tone of the rest of the story, but again, I live for the melodrama, so it took me out of the story only slightly, and by then I was invested and here for whatever was going to happen. I kind of like it when things go off the rails, as long as they don’t take too long to get there (looking at you Hereditary and Midsommar).
I really enjoyed Sophie’s narration. She’s got a good voice, and I had no trouble keeping up with the characters. Her little kid voice for Annalee was good, and she switched between that and the adult voices well. The tone was solid, and she kept me with her 100% through all the dramatic parts to the point of ignoring my work for a few minutes there toward the end.
This is my first Marian Snowe book, but Homecoming is on my to read soon list, so keep a look out for that review when I get to it. Finding Her was just what I need during a stressful workday, a light, fluffy romance with plenty of melodrama to keep me interested.
A Light to Guide Her Nan is an actress doing her best to leave her life behind for a little while. She’s run to Cape Summer to lie low while she decides what to do next. After renting a sailboat and getting caught in a storm, she crashes the boat and fights her way to shore. She introverted Cass is a single mom to precious and sweet little Annalee, who thinks she has found a mermaid when she spots Nan on the shore. Cass is drawn to the secretive Nan who refuses to say much about herself. Things have a way of getting out at the worst possible times and in the worst ways leaving Annalee caught in the middle and Cass’ back against a wall….
Ms Snowe just doesn’t know how to write a bad story and she certainly did not start with this one. It’s just as wonderful as you would hope. Nan and Cass are electric together and Annalee is such a doll! It doesn’t take long till the three of them are comfortable with and thoroughly enjoying each other, while I enjoyed them and the other residents of this seaside town. While some of the townsfolk aren’t all that friendly, most are wonderful and captivated by the little girl, only too willing to help in her master plan to get her mama and her “mermaid” together and if Oreo cheesecake happens to be involved, well then who is she to complain? This is one of those books that you won’t be able to put down, devouring it as fast as you can read but pouting when it’s over but that’s ok because that just means you can read it again that much faster. And that is what I am going to go do now!
There was action, humor, great characters, an adorable kid, and a believable sweet romance with a touch of angst thrown in for good measure. I will definitely be checking out more books by Marian Snowe. Sophie Daniels did a phenomenal job narrating and I hope to hear her voice narrating many books to come.
This was a very emotional and exciting story. I loved Cass and Nan and the chemistry that flowed between them. With their ups and downs chartering their path, it was refreshing to see them venture off it towards each other. Annalee added an extraordinary layer to this story with her own inner struggles. This story had so much truth to it, sadness brought tears happiness brought smiles and the ending brought satisfaction. A must read. Marian Snowe is an incredible writer.
I loved this book. Spotted it at the end of the author’s Christmas romance that just came out, and i just had to give it a try. The couple is completely adorable, yet dealing with a lot of drama in their personal lives outside of each other. They are a strong and healthy couple, which I love, and it starts with Cass living at the lighthouse, and Nan then staying there for a little bit. I felt like I was at the lighthouse, I was on the rocks at the end, and as though I never wanted the book to end.
(Audiobook review) A solidly entertaining romance that kept me company while WFH. Just the right balance of drama, angst, and romance, with believable characters. I usually hate romance novels that include kids but it worked really well here -- not too twee or too sappy about the Inexpressible Joys of Motherhood, thank god. Sophie Daniels is an excellent narrator and I really hope she does more lesfic. IMO one of Marian Snowe's best.
Cass and her daughter, Annabel, live in a lighthouse on the coast of Maine. NaN is running from all her problems and trying to get herself together. Sailing ito a storm she sinks into the ocean and swims desperately for shore. Annabel finds her washed up on the shore. Can life heal her and give her a home at last. Recommend.
Movie star attempts to show herself she can find help.
A struggling actress almost kills herself and is rescued by the lighthouse daughter and her mom. With a heavy heart both women struggle to find themselves, the daughter who is eight years old sets her sights on trying to help them locate each other. Enjoy!
Unusual story Nan and Cass and Annalee were great characters and made for a wonderful story. The drama starting at the very beginning of the story and going through till the ending made for nail biting reading. There were some quite moments that were romantic interludes that added spice to the story. Overall a wonderful read.
Had high hopes after enjoying the first half. But then it all fell apart. And badly. Can’t go into much because of spoilers but this ends up being one of those “if only they’d talked honestly to each other…” books. And the climax (not the sexual ones) was so over the top and out of nowhere that I wanted to just stop and call it done. Very disappointing.
A modern fairytale. This compelling romance includes poignant current issues as well as a thrilling chase and harrowing rescue. This is a fairytale with both dark and light. Enjoy! I did! Narrator Sophie Daniels gives a lovely voice to the characters and the story. *Audiobook
A delightful romance with a bit of drama rolled in. Lighthouse keeper Cass and daughter Annalee find washed up Nan after a boating accident. Love and happily ever after follow.
