“A new dog? You want a new dog?” Brown’s face crumples like he stepped on a nail. He stinks of guilt so badly it chokes me. “Butter, I’m a just dog handler in the army. They need me back in Kandahar to keep our soldiers safe. I need to go back to work.” “Sure. Me too. We’ll go back as soon as we get the prosthesis.” “There is no prosthesis, Butter.” “Not yet. But it’s coming soon. As soon as it arrives, we go back.” “Butter, the army can’t wait. The soldiers are in danger now.” I sigh. I guess I won’t get to be Bionic Butter after all. “Oh well. I hoped I’d show off to Guinness and Viper, but what can you do? I know they love me just the way I am, three-pawed and all. Let’s go then.” “Butter, you can barely walk. You can’t work as an explosive detecting K-9 on three paws.” “I’ll train, and I’ll get better. And when the prosthesis arrives, maybe they’ll send it over.” “Oh, Butter, how I wish that was possible. But it’s not.” “What do you mean?” “You’ll stay here and get better. I’ll speak to Diane about how to get some money. We’ll get you that prosthesis as soon as we can.” “Then we go back to our war?” Brown shakes his head. “No, Butter, I don’t think you’ll ever go back to war. But I have to.” “But Brown, you know you can’t sniff bombs! You can’t even find your stinky socks, even though I showed you a thousand times!”
Rada was born in Transylvania, ten miles away from Dracula's Castle. Growing up between communists and vampires taught her that humans are fickle, but one can always rely on dogs and books. After she immigrated to join her husband, she went to medical school, then worked in the ER for years, but she still speaks like Dracula's cousin. Her thrillers feature Dr. Emma Steele, a not-so-young ER doc with a moody teenage daughter and a fondness for wine. If blood, gore and serial killers turn you on, check out OVERDOSE, MERCY, and POISON. If you're into dark medical humor, check her STAY AWAY FROM MY ER. But if you're into dogs, the K-9 Heroes series is for you. To celebrate Gypsy, Rada's beloved German Shepherd, Emma adopted a quirky, bacon-loving K-9 named Guinness who runs her life through Mercy and Poison.
The author masters the concept of having a dog tell it's own story and making it interesting enough that it becomes a page turner deserving the highest rating. The fact that this is the second book in a series does not deviate from the author 's original plan.
Book - 2 In this case the main character is a Labrador named Yellow, to be renamed Butter later in the story. Butter was bought by Brown and handed, as a gift, to his wife Diane when she was only a pup. Brown, a soldier in the army, trains her in explosives detection for the purpose of saving other soldiers lives on the battlefield. During a mission, Butter is shot and the injury results in the loss of one leg that will be replaced with a prosthetic limb thus the term "Bionic" in the title.
The author takes on the very delicate and difficult task of describing, step by painful step, through research, and her main character's special story telling way, the pain, anxieties, depression, acceptance, rehabilitation, and the way in which a very traumatic experience can be used by the victim to help others surmount a similar trauma . Masterful. 5 Stars.
Biopic Butter is about a dog trained to sniff out explosive devices in Aghanistan. She is excellent saving her handler so many times. She gets injured on the job and loses her paw. This changes her life dramatically. She has to learn a new way to be useful and she is so depressed and angry about the changes that it takes a lot of time and work to turn that around. Written from the dogs point of view she tells her story. This is great reading for adults and young adults and some even younger.
I love the stories of the k-9 dogs. They are the real hero’s of the wars. These books are the best that I have ever read. I just can’t Put them down. Please read these and tell the author to writ many many more.
Butter is wounded, gets better, learns to help a child. This book has so many neat stuffs going for it,you will find it hard to put down. For sure, it will be a favorite. Well written, very interesting. Read it, you won't be sorry!
The description of the servicemen and women working in Kandahar in Afghanistan is troubling enough, but the stories of the dogs who work alongside them is heartbreaking. Each dog has his or her own story and very individual characters. What happens to Butter, an adorable Golden Retriever is shocking. But what I found more shocking was the attitude of her handler toward her when they're back home after her injury and he gets another dog to train. Thank goodness for his wife, who helps Butter find a new purpose in life. I'm glad I read this book. I wish I could understand the thoughts of dogs, like many of the humans in these books. If you have any feeling for dogs, particularly working dogs who are no longer useful for the job they're trained to do, I really recommend this and the other three books in the series
Bionic Butter: A Three-Pawed K-9 Hero is Book 2 in the K-9 Heroes series and like the prequel to the series, Mom, which was written as Book 9 in the series, and Becoming K-9: A Bomb Dogs Memoir Book 1 in the series, is another tearjerker. Every book that I have read in this series so far are filled with sadness, but in the end the happy moments balance the sad moments. If you love K-9s, especially if you have ever served with one, you will be able to identify and emphasize with the characters, both human and canine, in these stories. A K-9 and his/her handler form such a close bond that they can communicate without words.
I loved reading this through Butters eyes. I cried slot as I was afraid for Butter after she bit Brown and Lovely. It was good they became good friends. These dogs are true working dogs, and I would think they probably do think the way Butter did. They need a purpose again. Bring them to me, I am old I can love them all.
She lost her leg but manages to pick herself up! She is still a beautiful dog ready to let use of fake leg do what UT is supposed to do! Butter gets a life!😀😉🤗
I love the change of focus from a dogs perspective. The atory while serious holds humor a lot. Rada Jones is a very talented writer. O look forward to more of her books
The books in this series aren't literary award winners. But, they are wonderfully uplifting. Guinness and Butter both had a tale (tail) to tell and a moral. Looking forward to Viper's tale.
I have read all the books in this series. I started with book 3 and have now ended with books I and two. Why I am not sure but I enjoyed all of them. I wish there were more.
This is the second of a trilogy of books written by Rada Jones. Butter is a golden retriever that is trained to detect bombs in military situations. Butter is wounded and loses her leg in an attack. She has to find new purpose for her training. This is told in first-person from the dog's point of view.
