About the author

Paul Strathern (born 1940) is a English writer and academic. He was born in London, and studied at Trinity College, Dublin, after which he served in the Merchant Navy over a period of two years. He then lived on a Greek island. In 1966 he travelled overland to India and the Himalayas. His novel A Season in Abyssinia won a Somerset Maugham Award in 1972.

Besides five novels, he has also written numerous books on science, philosophy, history, literature, medicine and economics.

A lovely overview of Poe's life. Easy to digest biographical highlights and some surprisingly researched literary commentary. More substantial than Wikipedia, but not so dense that it puts you to sleep. Ninety minutes is about right. I read it in one sitting.

Probably not recommended for those wanting a deep understanding of Poe's life. Most biographical information remains surface level and the literary analysis fails to capture the magnitude of Poe's accomplishments. For example, there's not a single reference to The Tell-Tale Heart.

As a crash course, however, it works. And foregoing Heart is a logical editing decision. Even those least acquainted with Poe are likely familiar with that story. It's impossible to forget.

Strathern seems lost through most of this short history of Poe, not knowing what is important or even informative. Likewise, he works his way through the few selected pieces as one imagines a high school student with limited interest in the subject would (often citing the opening lines of the poems and stories as a sign of how in-depth he feels he must be in addressing the material). Like some of the philosophers he has covered, Poe may be one of the subjects that could have been better handled by a different author.

آلن‌پو از نویسندگانی است که برای من حس معجزه‌گر دارند. نویسندگانی که نمی‌شود از رویشان تقلید کرد. و الیته متاسفانه نویسندگانی که خیلی اسمشان را می‌شنویم اما نمی‌خوانیم. نشر مرکز یکی سری کتاب خیلی باریک دارد (که سختی هم می‌توانید در قفسه‌ها پیدا کنید) که دربارۀ نویسندگان مختلف است. این جلد هم مخصوص آلن‌پو است و در یک برداشت می‌شود آن را خواند. اگر ادبیات را جدی دنبال می‌کنید یا دوست دارید کمی از زندگی نویسنده‌ای سردربیاورید پیشنهاد می‌کنم این مجموعه را بخوانید. چون اغلب کارهایی که در این مجموعه به آن‌ها اشاره می‌شود ترجمه نشدند شاید در نگاه اول کمک کتاب گنگ به نظر برسد اما پلی است برای آشنایی بیشتر با نویسنده و البته شاید چراغی برای ترجمه و دقت بیشتری به آثار آلن‌پو.
