The motto of Marine Sergeant Ronaldo Salvatore lives on in his son, Dominic, and his undercover team known as the Saints. With the support of LAPD Captain Zed Marks, the Saints embark on a mission to destroy the criminal organizations that have a stranglehold on Los Angeles.
Through brains, cunning, and sheer ruthlessness, the most powerful leader, Don Antonio Moretti, has risen from underdog to contender for the throne. He believes that only the Vega family of narcos stands in his way, but he has underestimated another underdog.
As the Morettis and Vegas slug it out, the Saints go outside the law to deliver the City of Angels from evil. In this three-way death match, the streets will run with blood before a victor ever emerges.

Heck yes! Love this book. Love this series. NSS writes another plausible action packed thriller. Enjoyed being transported to LA and dropped in the thick of it. Mafia, post apocalypse and great characters. Fantastic!
This series gets better and better with each book. Sons Of War is a brilliant post-apocalyptic mafia story, written by one of my absolute favorite authors, Nicholas Sansbury Smith! I was almost a bit confused and conflicted with this book. At times, I found myself rooting for the good guys. I understand Dom's motivation to take down the Moretti family. I'd do the same in his situation. Without giving away any spoilers, I just wanna say I hope he finds what he's looking for. It will certainly come at a high cost if he does. Having said that, I'm still on team Moretti! Great series! Can't wait for book four and hopefully more after that! I love the narration by Ray Porter. He's one of my favorites!
Actual rating 4++ stars. A thrilling end (??) to NSS's latest series that I only hope gets at least another chapter ... and I proudly proclaim this coming after 5 straight days of doing little else other than re-reading book 2 and now this volume as well. Goodness knows the ending here left that possibility wide open!
One thing you can never accuse NSS of being is boring. We're never bogged down with ANY details that don't immediately serve the rushing story. I tell you, this book is so breath-takingly full of action, shocks, twists and outright mayhem that I had to literally force myself to take breaks, if for no other reason than to get my own heart-rate back to normal! And whereas it misses the monstrous horrors present in the "Hell Divers" or "Extinction" series - or even a clearer vision of who are the good guys and who are the bad of "Trackers" (my personal favorite of them all!) - it is still a nightmarishly painted canvas of a world that seems more possible every day.
Bottom-line is that if you love action - and the gore and horror that NEED to accompany them so they're never taken for granted - this is a great series and the best writer for this genre that I can recommend to you. Don't be too surprised though when people you were getting to know and perhaps even admire (not many here to do that, see below) are hurt and/or killed in, again, ways that will haunt your dreams at night.
I think if I had to explain away my 1/2 star comment at the start (besides some occasionally shakey editing, mostly but not exclusively due to punctuation), it would be that of all of NSS's books that I've read - and if goodreads is right, I've read all of his full-length, main offers - "Sons of War" was the first series where I didn't really feel much for anyone in terms of real respect or sympathy. I didn't like Dom or his dad. I didn't like the other Saints or anyone else involved out there that had even a modicum or a moment of decency. In fact, there is no clear-cut indication even IF there were any good guys involved ... and certainly some of the last reveals from the "Norfolk Council" echo those sentiments (no spoilers).
Maybe we haven't had enough time to let everyone find their true redemption yet. And that, besides the fact that NSS can just flat out write his butt off, is why I'm hoping there will be more down the road. There are a lot of dangling threads still floating in the toxic winds of LA back from books 1 and 2 and through this chapter as well and no one more equipped to bring them together! Get the word out friends, this is great stuff!
Did I just cry during an action book? I did. This series is intense. Many will die, and the consequences are felt across so many realistic characters, it’s cinematic and emotional to experience. My goals to write better, read the best, and love my family are all made better by reading Sons of War. Nick has a real gift in creating epic trauma and characters strong enough it makes you want to survive with them. Ray Porter is once again magnificent behind the microphone. His raw emotion perfectly fits the tone of this gritty post-Civil War 2.0 America. Onto book 4 and the finale!
Sinners is the third book in The Sons of War series, and definitely starts off with a bang. We’re thrown into the drama instantly and Smith doesn’t pull his foot from the accelerator for the rest of the book. It’s weird to describe a book that starts off with a bang as also being a “slow starter” but, the way that this book was written was high intensity right from the beginning but it ratchets up throughout the rest of the book.
Smith is able to write a story that if you ignore the settings is a mob tale. And if you ignore the mafias is a post-apocalyptic tale. But when you throw them together like this, it doesn’t feel like it would work, but wow does it. The two main families are at war while also trying to provide for the families under their protection. Think of it as the typical group you find in any typical post-apocalyptic book but ratcheted up to 11.
Sinners really shines a light on Smith’s ability to create extremely dynamic characters. Each character in this has good and bad, it just depends on which side you stand on if they are actually “good” or “bad”. Each family has a unique way of dealing with problems and specific people and it really shines in this one. Throw in the different side stories and this is one of the most unique apocalyptic series I’ve read in a long time.
Of course, a great audiobook isn’t complete without great narration. And Ray Porter crushes this one out of the park. He is simply put, the best narrator for this series, full stop. I can’t imagine any one else narrating this story and I’m glad that they’ve been together for all three books (so far).
I’m not always a fan of ongoing series, sometimes I feel like you need a little closure – but this one still has gas left in the tank. I think a SoW 4 is not only wanted, it’s needed. I can’t wait to see what happens to the characters and families as this series continues to grow and mature.
Just finished this and all I can say is wow! This is the best one of the series so far.
The third book sees the Saints ramping up the war against the mobs, specifically the Moretti family who have clawed their way to the top. Don Antonio Moretti has put millions of dollars bounty on the head of the Saints, which makes it harder for them to do their job. But with violence escalating all over the city who will come out on top?
Who would have known that a Post Apocalyptic story would work so well with a Mafia story!! The plot is told from the perspective of the Saints and the Moretti family and it's definitely a case of two sides of a coin. The Moretti family are evil, pure and simple, whereas the Saints try to be good but fighting this kind of evil requires you to go outside the law sometimes. Out of all three books so far, I found this one the hardest to put down as there was so much happening.
It was non stop from the get go. The Moretti family will stop at nothing to get what they want and they are causing chaos all over. They have important people in their pockets and are systematically wiping out the competition. The Saints meanwhile are trying to out fox them by destroying their merchandise. It was quite a ride reading it!!
Once again, this author shines with his characters. Don Antonio Moretti is a vile human, Vinnie Moretti I'm not too sure of. He has done evil but he doesn't enjoy it. Dom and the Saints are extremely well written and developed. They are flawed but you can't help but love them!!
Anyway, this book was amazing. Filled with action, intrigue, mobsters, cannibals, good and plenty of evil, it all adds up to a memorable read. There is twists and turns aplenty and so many edge of your seat moments that I was left reeling. I absolutely can not wait for the next in the series!!!
This book finds the Moretti family as the most powerful crime organization in LA, followed closely by the Vega family, with the Nevsky family and a handful of street gangs, all fighting for ultimate control of the city. The Saints, a team of undercover officers, led by Dominic Salvatore, who is driven by revenge for his murdered father, is taking a larger role in trying to rid the city of crime. In the middle of the fray are city leaders and police agencies, some of whom are corrupt, working with the criminals.
It is hard, sometimes impossible, to determine who is on which side, and all the players constantly try to turn people to work against their cohorts. Each side has their spies, as information about upcoming drug shipments or operations against their rivals is invaluable to their security. Then, too, deals for temporary alliances get made to take out rivals, but these end suddenly in double-cross battles if one side sees a weakness to exploit. Who can you trust? Your life depends on guessing correctly...constantly.
There is non-stop action in hijacking drug shipments, kidnapping for ransom, eliminating competitors, and general mayhem. The chess game never stops; you have to stay ahead of the other guy, or you lose. Mr. Smith does a great job exploring interpersonal relationships to add pertinent detail to the story lines, which make the book very hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, indeed the entire series, and look forward to a great conclusion. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion. I also bought a copy on release to help support this outstanding author.
Saints and Sinners joined in the eternal struggle - this time in the city of Angels
The Saints - a small band of heroes fighting back against the crime families sucking the life out of Los Angeles, what was left of it in the aftermath of the Third Civil War and the nuclear attack at targets nearby. Radiation is killing the remaining population of the city and only a drug, RX-4, kept the symptoms liveable. The supply of RX-4 is mostly controlled by the crime families - the Sinners. The two largest gangs are the Sicilian Mafioso run by Don Antonio Moretti and the gang of thugs run by the Vega brothers - Esteban and Miguel. The power struggle to control the city is constant, bloody, and deadly.
The powerful characters involved in the struggle are larger than life, casual dealers of death, family men who loved their wives and children, cannibals - I mean yuck! I'm sorry, I couldn't get that hungry! Anyway - the characters are real, people you know or know about, jerks and thugs empowered and emboldened by the group around them, heroes that have lived adventures you can only dream about. The storyline is an amazing mix of combat action, detective work, family love, more action. Altogether, this segment of the the Sons of War Series is a great read! I'm looking forward to the next in the series!
As we learned at the close of volume two, Dominic, “Moose”, Camilla, Vetis, “Tooth”, Nami, and Rocky are now known as The Saints. Don Antonio was tired of their interference in his plans putting a price on all their heads. Don Antonio also realized that his son Marco would never be able to escape the empire he was building. His family owns the empire but the empire also owns them. Vinny is to teach Marco how to survive in the world, such as it is. Don Antonio also wants to teach Marco how to make, broker, and break deals while he is about to break several deals he has made. The Vegas, the Netskis, and the police will all suffer. The Saints are getting more impatient, and in their haste, more careless. Don Antonio again uses one of his favorite plans pitting gang against gang to further his goals. All this killing is garnering attention from the “government” and money-lenders to the east. Not a good thing from Moretti’s viewpoint. The military hasn’t set foot in the City of Angels for eight years. Prepare for more exciting twists and turns to come.
Picking up several years after book 2, book 3 just throws you right in and does not stop. I wasn't expecting some of the painful losses in this book, but they fit so seamlessly into the story that I can't even be mad that NSS made me cry. Dom and Co. certainly make some questionable choices and the lines between good guys and bad guys are blurred in a way we haven't seen before. And even when they're making questionable decisions, as readers, we know exactly how they got there and feel like we can't even judge the choices we know are wrong. NSS does such a wonderful job of weaving together a blurred lines story where you aren't entirely sure of who is wrong and who is right sometimes that I genuinely hope he decides to write a book 4, just so we can find out how this plays out in his mind.
In Book 3, Sinners, readers continue down the dark alleys of violence and brutality in this post apocalyptic story of Mafia family loyalties and betrayals. This series plays with the soul of goodness, the code of ethics that gets turned upside down and twisted. It's about control of the City of Angels and survival. In this book, as in the previous books of this series, you'll fear what is on the next page, but you will not want to put the book down! Realistic in it's possibilities of a future apocalyptic catastrophe, but grateful that it is fiction. Another highly recommended series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and his ability to get into the mind and soul of his characters, believable visual descriptions and on the edge of your seat plots. The Post-Apocalyptic genre has never appealed to me, period. But, somehow, I got the first one "Sons of War"; and I was hooked on this series. I don't know that I will read other in this genre, but I am going to stick with this series until the end. The end has to be getting near, and I don't know how it will end; but the NSS has done an outstanding job building to the climax (and I thought it might end with this one). Listening to the story on Audible, the language gets a too rough (why it got 3 *'s and not 4)-- and there is no way to skip over it. But, I think of the people that are involved in the story, and that would be their story -- but I don't have to like it. Ready for the next book in the series to come out, and to see how it is all going to end.
Nicholas does it again .. he has created a story so riveting that it is impossible to put down. Between the gangsters , mobsters, cops corrupt and clean, the cannibals, the poor, the rich, and the dying of so many on all sides of the line , the story is so engaging that you have to keep reading. The twist and turns , and then at the end to know that it isnt over quite yet and that you have no idea what is going to happen next just begs you for the next book.. i hope we see it soon..and personally i need it..
Nicholas Sansbury Smith is an amazing author and this series is fabulous. The only thing that would make it better is "Sinners (The Sons of War #4)." (Can I order it in advance?) This series has so many richly developed, compelling, unique characters carefully woven into a nuanced and colorful story tapestry that you can't put the series down and you can't forget the characters. I guess it's obvious that I am a NSS fan but I particularly like this series. The vulnerability of the characters and the dystopian vision of Los Angeles gives it an immediacy and reality that can't be denied.
The body count continues to climb with this latest story in the Sons of War series. There is no shortage of suspense, savagery, action and double-crossing as the Moretti crime family work toward their ultimate goal of domination over Los Angeles’ important infrastructure. The author’s masterful writing skills are spot-on and the bleak post-apocalyptic world he has created is frighteningly realistic. Highly recommended!
Book 3 of the series takes you there, back, forward, and around again. The intensity is masterfully increased without sacrificing the quality. Breathless is how I felt when reading and I simply could not stop once I started. Every chance I got I was reading even a few paragraphs because I couldn't NOT read it. I admit I didn't think I'd like this series, I mentioned as much in my earlier reviews but from the start, he got me, kept me, and still keeps me hanging on. I can't wait for more!
Great book and great finish for the series. This book is filled with action coming from all directions. Yes there is plenty of choice wording and suggestive innuendos but it’s not overdone. The violence gets turned up a couple of notches compared to the previous books but you would have to expect that coming from a postwar wasteland controlled by Gangsters and Mobsters. A great for anyone who likes the mob genre of books.
I'M GOING TO HAVE A HARD TIME REVIEWING EACH BOOK ON ITS OWN BECAUSE I READ ALL THREE NON-STOP. THAT SHOULD SAY SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST OF THE SONS OF WAR SERIES. FAST PACED AND ENTERTAINING A READ THAT DOESN'T NEED TO STOP HERE . DON ANTONIO MAY HAVE NO FEAR BUT,WHAT ABOUT DOM? IS HE JUST GOING TO SIT DOWN, HOW HIS. HEAD ACCEPT THIS AS THE END? I,FOR ONE,WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.
This third book is the best one in the series keeping me awake just wondering what’s going to happen next. Great characters and their thoughts and motivations makes it hard for the reader to pick sides for good and evil. OK, I’m on the side of the good guys. Lots of action, blood and bullets and unexpected turns. Looking forward to the Sons of War 4.
Its not often that the third book in a series is better than the previous two, but that is the case here. It's hard to write a review without giving things away, but I will say that the overall plot and the development of all of the many main characters is simply awesome and I cannot wait for book four.
I've read all of his books and have yet to be disappointed. In this genre, Mr. Smith is in the top echelon. This great series needs a climax. Let's hope his publisher realizes that his fans will follow him to the next series, but want to see the finish of Sons of War!!!
I haven't read a single book by NSS that I haven't loved. This series was just as good as all of the others. The way he writes the stories and develops the characters really draws you in. Praying there is a book 4 on the horizon, there is so much more that needs to happen! Fingers crossed!
I have very much enjoyed the Sons of War series! I look forward to the finale! Relatable characters. Fun story subplots. Bit heavy on the swears and the violence. But that would only take it a 4-1/2 stars for me. Keep writing Nicholas, and I’ll keep reading.
This was thrilling. It's compelling , brutal and violent. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will be drawn into hoping that good will win out over evil, but it's not always the case. A very addictive series. Hope there is another one to follow.
I’ve really enjoyed this series, Mr Sansbury has an amazing ability to keep the reader riveted and unable to put the book down. I can’t wait for the 4th book to be published and would gladly preorder it
The third Sons of War book was fascinating to read and continued to bring the story of the Saints to life. Following the two families either fighting evil or gaining strength by using it. All three books always kept me wondering what was going to happen next.
Rival mob families, good cops, bad cops. My heart was racing. I love this series! Post apocalypse mob books? Seriously. So good. I'm holding my breath for book 4. Come join the eye, you won't be sorry!
Plot lines really fall into place in this book.Typical for Nicholas the characters are so well developed. While rooting for the Saints you can't help but feel an attachment for many of the bad guys. No one is perfect and few are perfectly evil.
I love to read used to use local library but waiting for my turn in line got frustrating so family bought me a Kindle now on my 5th one have read every available book of Mr Smith hoping to read more
I will read the next one. I liked this one tho it felt like it got bogged down with the Morettis a bit. Still, it kept my interest. I like reading about Cam and would like more about her.
