A group of schoolgirls, already finding themselves to be outsiders, or misfits, seek out eachother to help deal with their problems. It seems like it's going to be pretty sweet, which it is, but it's also pretty serious..

I can't make my mind up about the art - it feels like manga-ish art, with all the facial extremities filed off. It sort of works, but it's not great.

(I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)

The Misfits Club for Girls follows the story of five girls who feel different and don't have anyone to confide in. One of them decides that they should stick together and become friends. Nevertheless, our protagonist Paloma doesn't show any interest in this and think that it would be useless. They other girls try to convince her to join their club by learning about her past and trying to help her overcome it.

I honestly didn't really enjoy this book. I think this is because it all felt way too rushed and the reader didn't even get the chance to get to know the characters, so they all end up seeming quite flat and superficial. The main focus of the story seems to be in Paloma, but we don't get to see much of what is going on inside her head. Also, the motivations of the characters are not very clear or well thought out: why do they want to befriend Paloma so badly? The story is interesting, but the lack of development of the characters and their relationships to each other was a big no-no for me.

I must say that the illustrations were very beautiful and I really liked the art style of Camille Méhu, but I don't think it is enough to compensate for the weak plot... However, if you're looking for a fast read, cool illustrations and some badass (although sometimes also ruthless *ahem, ahem* Sierra) girl group, this graphic novel may be for you!

A decent coming-of-age story that follows a teen who has been shuffled around foster homes. I liked the intended message of this graphic novel and its themes, but overall everything just felt rushed and not explored enough.

Most of the characters lacked depth and didn't really get enough scenes, which I thought was quite a waste considering the vibrant cast. The whole teen hacker thing was so unconvincing and the ending also came out of nowhere with no foreshadowing. The art wasn't eye-catching either.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review, with thanks to Netgalley and the publishing team.

This book follows Paloma, a troubled young girl who has just entered her 15th foster home and the deal she makes with her new foster mother to make friends. After the first year, she still has no friends, and the deal gets extended. Paloma can't understand why her foster mother is so adamant she makes friends so simply tries her best not too. That all changes however when she falls into step with a bunch of other "misfit girls" who don't fit in for one reason or another. They form a club and aim to get Paloma to join their ranks. They are each unique with their own story that makes them a misfit, but they band together to form quite a cohesive group.

I liked the story, I really really did. The art was cute, the story was fun, but I wish there was more. I understand making a graphic novel or a comic series of any kind is a lot of work. It requires dedication out of the wazoo and a lot of dedication goes into it, but I wanted this to be longer. It felt like everything very quickly was wrapped up with a nice bow and it was called a day. I would've liked to see more of these characters, their individual lives and stories and be shown it, rather than simply told and moved on. I did enjoy this story overall though.

I received a copy of this comic book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This graphic novel has tough subjects but interesting unique characters and nice art! Each character seems to have their own troubles that make them outcasts in their school. First volume is mostly focused on Paloma, a orphaned girl rotating nonstop in the foster system and how she finds her place in the world.🙂
I enjoyed the story very much and as there is yet so much we do not know about the other girls then I’m intrigued to read more about the Misfits Club! 😉

I know the story was rushed without proper character development, but I was completely invested in Paloma's story. I wanted her to find acceptance and stability. I hope there will be a second follow-up book.

A moving story about a young girl in fostercare who has no friends until she meets other girls at school who are also on the margins of school social life. It is a nice enough story with good artwork and it will be interesting to see how the series develops.

This book follows a newly formed club, The Misfits Club for Girls, as they try to recruit a fifth member. Paloma, the fifth member has bounced around from foster home to foster home due to a troubled past. When her foster mom makes a deal: make a friend or get out, she tries everything to make it appear as though she has a friend, without really making one. When the Misfits Club for Girls tries to recruit her and become her friend, she rejects. We then follow the group as they uncover Paloma’s past to try to get their fifth member. Tossed in, one member, Celeste, often has mysterious cuts on her. Sierra is exploring her sexual orientation. Apolline is living her best, gay life. And Chelonia just has all her sh*t together and uses her intense hacking skills to unite the group.

This book was good and enjoyable, but not great. The plot holes were honestly quite distracting.

First, what is going on with Celeste, is she hurting herself? Being abused? Are we gonna solve this problem?

Second, WTF was with that escalation of the Sierra situation. First, she makes one comment about boobs after a rugby game, next thing we know, she is grabbing Apolline’s boobs and kissing her out of nowhere. Then, we don’t get a resolution to their relationship. Do they stay together in secret forever? Do they separate because Sierra isn’t ready to come out? Is Sierra really gay? Why is Apolline so okay with this secret relationship? It doesn’t quite make sense.

Also, how did Chelonia become so perfect?

Why did they want to help Paloma so bad anyway? What made her SOOOO important. Surely there are other, nicer people at the school that have no friends.

Also, I feel like this book should have been MUCH longer. One page we learn that Paloma was bullied by a girl in her foster home, next thing we know, everyone from that home died in a fire - not to mention we just assume she tried to trick another foster kid into setting fire to a trash barrel.

And give Paloma a break, she sucks as a person, but as soon as she finds friends, you kill off her foster mom?! Really?!

I feel like we were so focused on Paloma that we acted like the other characters were A-okay even though there was clear evidence to the contrary.

2.5 stars

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me this graphic novel arc in exchange for an honest opinion.

Paloma is a troubled girl, she doesn't talk to anyone, she's changed homes and foster families several times, and this time she's not looking to be liked by her new foster family.
While Paloma is a girl who doesn't interact with anyone, a group of 4 girls called The Misfits, are looking for Paloma to join them and be friends, but Paloma won't make it easy for them.

I really liked the story, it has a very interesting premise and it is that being a graphic novel, we can see exactly the emotions of all the characters, it also touches somewhat strong themes that if it is necessary to enter with caution to the story.

It was a complicated story to read but it was beautiful, thanks to the art of this story we can connect a lot with each of the girls who appear in the story, each one has problems and we do not see it as something passing, but the characters feel so real that you empathize with all of them.

In so few pages it makes you feel a lot of things and the way this one turned out, I need more stories about the girls because I want to get to know them a lot more.

Hmmm... Teen read, focusing on a girl in foster home number fifteen – she's a sullen, slovenly, violent little cow you don't want anything good for. But surely there's a reason why the angel has fallen and we must all be caring and giving her good vibes? Luckily yes, and very luckily indeed the reason is not the usual causes, and we're not supposed to take on the namby-pampy saccharine nonsense of other stories of this type. Throughout these pages, other oddball, misfit girls in the school arrange themselves into a support group, the Club of the title, so clearly future books will give back story to them all in turn. I don't really know where I stand with this one – there is a bit of the do-gooding, blame-it-on-the-past nonsense about it, but there are also some highly inventive switcheroos. Which means I am glad I persisted with it to find the truth, but may not subject myself to any other books in the series (although this being from Europe Comics the chance of seeing any Book Twos or upwards are zero or less). Finally, I can see this being more appreciated by the target audience, those who might see something of themselves in the characters.

trigger warning

Four girls form the misfit club for girls because it's been them against the rest of the world, anyway. Might be more fun if you have company. Their first goal as a club: Get Paloma to join.

Paloma is an orphan in the foster care system and is currently with her 16th foster family, a woman who gave her a challenge: You can leave if you make friends. Real friends. You have one year.

This was hard to read but beautiful, not only in the illustration style but also in the story and the message behind it. The main cast of people is very three dimensional, all with their own hobbies and personalities that are to be explored slowly - because these girls haven't had it easy so far and have build a protective shell around themselves. All of them, not only Paloma.

Will keep an eye out for further installments, I need to know how it goes on!

The Misfits Club for Girls is an interesting introduction to a new graphic novel series. The art style is beautiful and expressive, and the diverse cast of characters are generally likable. The plot, however, has some notable issues. The premise of the book is shaky - it’s a club for the outcast girls at school, but why this club was formed and how these specific girls were identified is only quickly touched upon. The club decides their first mission will be convincing angry loner Paloma to join. Why? It’s not really clear. The lengths that the club goes to to get Paloma are not only preposterous, they’re illegal and a gross violation of privacy, but not presented as questionable at all. One character also bullies and physically assaults an ex-boyfriend more than once for comedy. Overall it feels like there could be something worthwhile here, but this first installment of The Misfits Club for Girls leaves a lot to be desired
