Erik Amdahl and his spirited daughter, Sofia, have embarked on a long-promised cross-country ski trip deep into Norway's arctic circle. For Erik, it's the chance to bond properly with his remaining daughter following a tragic accident. For Sofia, it's the proof she needs that her father does care.
Then, far from home in this snowbound wilderness, with night falling and the mercury plummeting, an accident sends them in search of help - and shelter. Nearby is the home of a couple - members of Norway's indigenous Sami people - who they've met before, and who welcome them in. Erik is relieved. He believes the worst is over. He thinks that Sofia is now safe. He could not be more wrong. He and Sofia are not the old couple's only visitors that night - and soon he and Sofia will be running for their lives . . . ...and beneath the swirling light show of the Northern Lights, a desperate fight ensues - of man against man, of man against nature - a fight for survival that plays out across the snow and ice.
A story of endurance and of the desperate, instinctive will to survive, of a father's love for his child, of knowing when to let go - and of a daughter's determination to prove herself worthy of that love, Where Blood Runs Cold is a pulse-racing thriller from a master storytelle
Giles Kristian's first historical novels were the acclaimed and bestselling RAVEN Viking trilogy – Blood Eye, Sons of Thunder and Odin’s Wolves. For his next series, he drew on a long-held fascination with the English Civil War to chart the fortunes of a family divided by this brutal conflict in The Bleeding Land and Brothers’ Fury. Giles also co-wrote Wilbur Smith’s No.1 bestseller, Golden Lion. In God of Vengeance (a TIMES Book of the Year), Winter’s Fire, and the Historical Writers’ Association Gold Crown shortlisted Wings of the Storm, he returned to the world of the Vikings to tell the story of Sigurd and his celebrated fictional fellowship. Lancelot was published to great acclaim and hit The Times bestseller charts at No. 3. It was also a Sunday Times bestseller. He followed Lancelot with Camelot, and his next novel, a thriller called Where Blood Runs Cold, was the Times' Thriller of the Month, and won the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize 2022. His next novel, Arthur, will be the final book in his Arthurian Tales. It will be published June 6th. Pre-order links here: https://linktr.ee/arthur_by_giles_kri... “We’re not going to die, because we never give up. No matter what. No. Matter. What.”
Most of what I watch is crime/drama oriented, so I always find it strange how little of the genre I read. But, when I saw Giles Kristian was taking a turn away from his usual historical fiction to write a crime book, I decided that this would be the time I consciously dived into the genre. As Giles Kristian is up amongst my favourite authors, I felt pretty safe in doing so. And I was right!
This is a story that is rife with tension and mystery and an evolving story. But it is deeper than it first appears. We have parents dealing with grief, and really the core of this story is driven by the theme of a parent's love for their child. This is a book about what a father will do for their child to keep them safe. And it is delivered in a natural, organic way that strikes an emotional note. It is done brilliantly, and Giles Kristian does a great job balancing this with the evolving mystery and the action and the dynamic between the central characters.
This was a rollercoaster of a ride, with an unexpected emotional depth to it as well as the expected tension and chase and mystery of a crime set during the extreme weather of Scandinavia, which acts as both friend and foe. A lot of themes ranging from grief to love to sacrifice that elevated this to another level. And the setting feels visceral. It feels alive, and dangerous, and unpredictable. It really is like another character, and I love when the setting plays such a powerful role in the story and really effects the evolution of the plot.
This is not just a crime book. It is a book about the human condition. About what drives us. About the idea of loving something more than yourself. It is an edge-of-your-seat story with a philosophical coating that does not dominate the story, but adds so much depth.
3.5 Stars. I questioned my choice of reading material while stranded at home during Christmas following a fierce winter storm and dangerous ice conditio s outside. I wondered if it would have been better to be lost in a story with warm sunny beaches and palm trees instead of this desperate fight for survival in the vast fro en Arctic. I concluded that this chilling, agonizing story fit my winter mood.
This is a character-driven story with an atmosphere of dread and oreboding. The location, so vividly described, becomes a predominant character. Set in the northern region of Norway among mountains, glaciers and dark forests.
It seems to be a traditional right of passage among some locals for a father to take his daughter on a long winter hike when she turn thirteen. Erik Amdahl promised they would take the trek together on her thirteent birthday. In the meantime, his older daughter died in a tragic accident, and he is determined to keep the younger ofia safe. He is concerned that she lacks the endurance and stamina for such a journey and needs to wait until she is better prepared. This decision disappoints and angers Sofia, but he relents overnight.
They venture out into the frigid ilderness. On their first night, Sophia accidentally injure her hand. Eric brings her to the isolated home of a couple that his wife/Sofia's mother knows through the women's environmenta activism. The woman of the house, Karine Helgeland and Erik's wife, Elise, are acquainted due to a Russian plan to restore a copper mine on land where the indigenous Sami raze their reindeer. Doing so would destroy he Sami way of life. Erik and Sofia are welcomed by the couple, given food and overnight shelter, and Sofi 's wound is treated. During the night, they hear Russians enter the house and try to bribe the couple into supporting he mine development. Both the man and his wife are killed. Erik and Sofia go on a run nto the frozen land. They have skis and snowshoes and are pulling a sled with a few days of provisions.
Erik wants to prove to his daughter that he cares for her and would risk every hing to protect her. Sofia is slow to believe that her father loves her and wants to form a bond. I found their interactions and conversations annoying at the beginning. The author wrote with great passion about the ordeals to be endured and about the searing climatic conditions, and I felt I would have felt the tension and suspense more if the descriptions were just toned down a bit.
Went they rushed away from the home where they witnessed the murder, Erik and Sofia were observed making their escape. They endure injuries, frostbite and hypothermia, and are both exhausted. The biter sub-zero cold is worsened by the chilling blasts of wind and blizzard conditions. The author does a brilliant job in describing the devastating effects of the bitter cold on the human body and mental state. Erik imagines an ancient Scandinavian god lurking about. To add to their discomfort, fear, and pain, they are aware that a murderous Russian man is chasing after them, intent on killing them. They become aware that the Russian group have an interest that goes beyond establishing a copper mine on Sami grazing land. This is a coverup for dangerous scientific/medical experimentation. They head off to find the Sami brother of the murdered woman, hoping to get help. He herds reindeer out in the wilderness.
This is a family drama of grief, love, sacrifice, sorrow, and regret as well as a survival story of dread, suffering, menace and a desperate chase. There are a couple of surprising twists that I never expected.

This contemporary thriller from this author is an entertaining change from his otherwise excellent historical novels.
Storytelling is of a very good quality, no doubt about that, but only the figures of Erik Amdahl, his daughter, Sofia, and the reindeer-herder and brother of Karine Helgeland, Hánas, are well worked out in this thriller while a lot of other figures are more or less superficial, but on the other hand the landscape and severe weather conditions, which you can certainly find in Norway, are wonderfully described and pictured by the author.
At the beginning of the book you'll find an excerpt by Robert Frost, while at the back you'll notice an Author's Note with some very useful information, in an attempt to make this tale understandable.
This thriller is set in Norway, and we find the Amdahl family, Erik, his wife Elise and daughter, Sofia, on a holiday break in an effort to come to terms with the death of their elder daughter/sister, Emilie, and so hoping to make a fresh new start as a family.
Somehow Elise still finds the time to keep on working with Karine Helgeland, for some kind of environmental enterprise, while not long after having met with Karine, and encountered some dangerous Russians, the Amdahl's are invited to have dinner at the home of Karine and Lars Helgeland.
Next day Erik will make his promise a reality for Sofia and take her on a long ski trip, but not long after striking a camp disaster will strike and Sofia is hurt and needs medical attention on her hand, and so they set off to the home of the Helgeland's, where Sofia gets treated and later on while sleeping upstairs Karine and Lars get visited by the Russians and they get murdered, and these murders are witnessed by Erik and Sofia, so they try to flee from the clutches of these Russian killers, and hoping to stay free.
What is to follow is a thriller where Erik and Sofia will have to endure much hardship and pain, but their bond as father and daughter will grow and strengthen that much stronger along the way, right up till the end where a final reckoning will take place in their ultimate sacrifice to stay alive and survive.
Really recommended, for anyone who likes a thriller without a real plot and having to guess the culprit(s), and so I can imagine people giving this book 5 stars, but for me personally this was a just a good thriller in comparison to his excellent historical novels, and that's why I like to call this book from this wonderful author: "A Good Straightforward Thriller"!
There is absolutely zero tension in this book. It’s a man and his daughter yelling each other’s names while stuck out in the cold and doing the same kinds of things over and over again till the end. It’s certainly not a thriller, no matter how you spin it. It’s more a family drama with a tenuously linked bad guy chase in background. The ending was ridiculous. Would I recommend it? No.
Erik is opgelucht.
A cat and mouse chase across a chilly wilderness forms the basis of this story - it is too, a portrait of family grief and love.
It is beautifully descriptive, the author giving you a shivery sense of the landscape and it is often edge of the seat as a father and daughter face adversity together.
It would make a terrific film. Cinematic and addictive. Recommended.
1%-20% boooooooring 20-45% really good and addicting 45%-85% boooooooooring, unnecessary, could have been left out 85%-100% good but predicted the ending
OMG the atmosphere, the cold, the psyche WOW .. and i am in tears. Mr Kristian proved he can, not only write amazing historical fiction, but also an impactful, atmospheric and gripping psychological thriller.
※ 5 stars ※ Giles Kristian’s one of my favorite authors, so there was no question that I would read his book as well. This book was now completely different from what I was used to from him, but the well-known Norwegian culture and mythology was not left out either.
“He didn’t know how close their pursuers were, as he couldn’t risk stopping to peer into the dark woods behind him, but he had never been so afraid. Never before felt like some hunted, helpless animal. But then, as though some fickle deity had decided to give the prey a chance, he and Sofia were given something else: true darkness.”
It is an exciting and action-packed ski trip. Here, the stakes of the characters are their own lives, while the relationship between father and daughter becomes close again. The two of them will witness many horrors and even have to flee to get as far away from the tall man as possible.
I’ve never read a thriller before, so it sucked me into the story. It could offer me something new. Did that surprise me? Of course the answer is yes. The story has a somewhat happy ending, but it’s not so hilarious because the characters have witnessed a lot of murders and horrors.
“The man and the girl. In the distance, though not too far, a house sat alone in the snowbound world. Silver smoke drifting up from the stone chimney. Golden light in the windows. Snow on the roof. Home.”
In Where Blood Runs Cold, Giles Kristian gives us a visceral, heart wrenching, thrill ride through a snow swept wilderness.
It is a story of love and loss, of sorrow and regret. But it is also one of love, of family, of hope and determination. A father who has already lost one daughter, simply refuses to lose another, no matter what life throws at them.
Erik promises to take his daughter on the ‘Long Ski’, through the wilderness of northern Norway. On the first night Sofia cuts her hand, and it is deep enough for Erik to change course, and they diverge to a nearby house, where Erik hopes they will find some assistance. But tragedy awaits, and Erik and Sofia are forced to hide in an upstairs bedroom whilst two people are murdered just below them.
What comes next is a ski trip neither son or daughter will forget. On and on they are forced to ski, to the edge of their endurance, seemingly to the edge of the world. For there is no help to be found in the dark corners of the north, where the elements are king and mere people must survive any way they can. With every painful stride of their tiring legs they are aware of the people chasing them, the people that have killed once, and won’t hesitate to do so again.
What really struck me with this story was the bond between father and daughter. A family torn apart from loss, thrust back together in tragedy. Erik is a powerful protagonist, and his need to keep his one remaining daughter safe drives the story on, his emotions pouring from the page. They struggle through a wilderness that is brilliantly brought to life, you can feel their pain, their exhaustion, as they battle to the ends of their tether to stay one step ahead of their pursuers. The father and daughter make a believable team, and I would gladly read on about their journeys together.
This was a brilliant read. Fast paced. Gripping. Tense. Thrilling. Dark. Deadly. A real page turner that keeps the reader hooked until the final page. A story about a father and his daughter who witnessed a murder and now they’re being chased by the murderers. An edge of your seat read. To say the story is set in the snowy, blizzard mountains with not much around there’s plenty to keep you hooked. Accidents. Shots. Blood. Chases. Hiding. Resting. Heart pounding.
A story full of determination to survive even with death comes knocking. One I won’t forget for a long time and I’ve discovered a new author to enjoy too. I did think the ending was a bit sudden but I totally got it. This wasn’t just a normal murder there’s more behind it. A lot of lives lost over what’s hidden in this town and its past. Highly recommend. A well deserved four stars from me.
Wrap up warm, you could get frostbite just reading this! Giles Kristian is a well-established and very talented author of historical fiction. Here he scratches an itch to present a thriller set in modern day Norway. Mainly this is a chase thriller in snow covered Norwegian desolation but there is far more depth to it than that, it’s also a story about family, loss, bonding and….survival. When Erik and his teenage daughter witness a murder, they take to their skis to escape but the wilderness is no barrier to their pursuers who will stop at nothing to kill them. The cold of Norway will seep into your bones as you discover that this was no simple murder, the snow holds many dangerous secrets. Well, I think Giles Kristian can add another string to his bow, this is excellent. Really enjoyed it but also the author’s notes at the end were very enlightening.
This is my favourite book of the year so far. For a story which is basically a chase across the snow, it's so masterfully done
I have read everything else by GK, so I was already prepared for his beautiful prose and exceptional story telling. However what I didnt expect from his debut in this genre, was the way he had me absoutley captivated through every twist and turn.
The ability to make me feel like I was in the wilderness, in that cold, freezing. Just blew me away.
Uff.
Tense, chilling (quite literally) and thoroughly exciting. Giles Kristian is a wonderful writer and I love that he's now created such a fabulous wintry thriller. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.
