Their mother is in a coma, and yet the house is anything but quiet at night.

Jill and Cheryl are two estranged sisters who are brought together after their mother with dementia mysteriously falls into a coma. Eager to return to their own lives, the sisters wait for an attorney to arrive and finalize the legal issues around the house. Forced to spend time together in their childhood home, the sisters begin experiencing strange phenomena in the house.

Creepy sounds carry through the walls at night, nightmares plague them in their sleep, and dark figures manifest themselves in the corner of their eyes, only to disappear when they look at them. The longer they spend in the house, the more they begin to realize that something unnatural is going on.

They follow in their mother's footsteps to find the dark secret that drove her to lose her mind and finally fall into a coma. But the more they find out about the foreign darkness that inhabits the house, the more they start to realize that leaving the house will solve nothing, and they have only two choices.

Put their differences aside to defeat the evil in the house, or stay divided and share their mother's fate.

Hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck creepy!

Terms like ‘gripping’ ‘addictive’ or ‘hard to put down’ get bandied about so often that it becomes hard to parse between what is actually an exceptional read and what is just hyperbole. In regard to Boris Bacic’s books, as Han Solo once said, ‘it’s true, all of it. Boris’s books are awesome’. I may have paraphrased a little.
But seriously, you know when you find an author who just speaks your language? Who writes the way you read? That’s Boris for me. His stories are just so readable. I find myself totally lost in his writing, and to use another cheesy over-used (but totally true) phrase, his books practically read themselves. He has such a great grasp of how to build a scene, progress a plot, whilst keeping character at the forefront of the story.
‘Her Home’ is one of his best yet. Like serious chills from this one. It gave me serious ‘Insidious’ vibes in terms of the chills-your-blood scare-factor. But this isn’t just another haunted house story. It’s very different and took a route I wasn’t expecting. Something Boris always does really well, upending expectations and taking tropes and twisting them into unexpected directions. Multiple parts of this one genuinely had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. Something that doesn’t actually happen often from reading for me.
Anyway, enough gushing from me! Just read this!

What an interesting story. A really good horror story. Jill and Cheryl go back to their childhood home to decide what to do with their mom and her house. They immediately start having nightmarish dreams and memories. From there it gets worse as they find themselves in a battle for their lives. Nice creepy factor to the story.

Her Home - 5/5
By Boris Bacic

Ahhhhhhh! I have been waiting for this since it was announced and I LOVED IT.

Not as scary as THE DOOR or APARTMENT 401 as we kinda know whats going on in this book. As with all books written by Boris - once I started, I couldn’t put it down!

Boris is a genius at creating an unsettling atmosphere and creating creatures straight out of your nightmares.

This is a wonderful book to read if you aren’t so sure if you love horror or not!

Two estranged sisters come are brought together because of their mother’s dementia. She is now in a coma and they must decide what to do with the house and her belongings. But the sisters seem to sense something is wrong with the house. The longer they stay the more the house displays dark it holds within. What will they do? Will they stay and fight the evil to the end and perhaps go insane light their mother or will they run? Great novel! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the novel.

A real page turner of a book!

Wow, this was a really good and scary story. A family torn apart by a mother's naive attempt to experience Haitian voodou up close. Whatever you do, don't annoy a voodoo god. Unfortunately this lady did just that, resulting in her own mental destruction and then allowing the curse to infect the rest of her family. Dark and terrifying spectres inhabiting our world, lost souls trapped within spirit worlds, murder and mayhem galore. Highly recommended!

Boris Bacic has written another gripping, creepy, scary read in this one. Sisters Jill and Cheryl have returned to their childhood home to see what can be done for their mother, who has fallen into a coma. What they discover brings the estranged sisters together in a very unexpected way. it seems that their Mother has been dabbling in voudou for some reason and something has taken over her home.

This is an unusual haunted house story since it delves into the practice of voudou. I have been intrigues by voudou for a long time and enjoyed this aspect of the story. There were some great terror-filled scenes in this book and you will find yourself looking around as you read it. It ends in the classic horror story way, with an open ending that lets your imagination fill in the blanks.

I recommend this book (and all others by this author) if you enjoy a well-written horror story. You won't be disappointed.

Three loud knocks resounded on the door. And then silence.

Two sisters share very different childhoods even though they were raised by the same mother and father in one household. Cheryl was the daughter her mother; Annette doted on, while Jill was the outcasted child who always did wrong by her mother. From a young age it was clear of the favoritismand where the distain was born. Watching her younger sister be the recipient of all their mother's love built a wedge between the two long into adulthood. While Jill focused on a career and family, Cheryl was trying to find herself in college and with her newest boyfriend Tom. When news of their mother's declining health and coma forced the two to return to Medford, they never expected the nightmares that awaited them. While Tom was busy breaking things off with Cheryl after an affair with her friend Paula, Jill was struggling to keep her past from affecting her marriage with Lee and their five year old son Charlie. Forced to reconcile with her sister after years estranged, they are met with the hospice nurse Violet who begins showing them the ropes of their mother's care. Even during their first night, Jill and Cheryl are plagued by horrible nightmares and shadows moving from the corners of their eyes. By the second night, everything would hit the tipping point and leave both girls terrified out of their minds and sleeping in Jill’s car.

Now, as she stared at her mother standing in the doorway between the foyer and the living room, the fear that she felt inside the tree trunk faded in comparison. Annette’s head twitched violently, and the corner of her mouth was contorted into a stroke-like grimace. Her wrists and fingers were rigid, twitching just as violently as her head. In one of her hands was Jill’s doll, Lola. The only part of her body that seemed stable were the perfectly still legs that she stood on, in a somewhat spread-out stance. Jill wanted to call out to her mom, but she knew that the monstrosity that stared back at her through her mother’s eyes was not actually her mother. An eternity of being locked in a staring contest passed, even though it was probably just a few seconds, and then the thing embodying Annette moved. It arched backward with impossible flexibility, causing another loud, bony crack to fill the air. It planted its palms on the floor, going into a bridge position, and then scuttled up the stairs. It was gone within seconds.

Erika was a friendly elderly woman who has known the girls since they were babies, as herself and Annette had an extremely close bond. Taking a trip together, they would enter a tour of a cave with sections completely banned but Annette would break all the rules and enter a forbidden corner. Finding herself angering a Vodou God, she's haunted ed for years with paranoia and hauntings that left her a broken shell of herself. Pulling into deeper isolation, it would lead to the dissolve of her marriage and Jill hating her for years to come. When the girls opened their mother's off limits office, they saw the symbol painted on the wall that welcomed a tricker Laou into her life where the curse now would pass down the family tree indefinitely. Possessed through Lola, a doll given to Jill by her own mother, it was a limited time before the trickster would come for what they were owed. As Erika tried to disclose this information to Cheryl, the trickster would follow her home and leave her tumbling down the steps resulting in her death. With nowhere else to turn, they reach out to Fabioloa, an expert in Haitian Gods who would help Cheryl offer her body as a vessel to allow her to move into the Crossroads. Finding her mother in the forgotten lands, her mind is too far broken even when she brought her back to the living. Removed from her coma, she can only mumble and stare vacantly at the wall. As the two work together to destroy the doll, Cheryl unlnowingly took on the curse and now with the help of Fabiola, uses special spells to offer herself protection from evil. Happy to be on better terms with her sister and nephew, she believes her life is really about to turn around again.

The arms that hung to the side were too long, too thin, and too incongruous compared to the rest of the body. The legs were just as slim, and the shape of them was strange. There weren’t any wrinkles or bagginess notable for clothes—especially the kind of oversized clothes that Lee often wore. The figure in the frame moved its head slightly more to the side, revealing a noseless (and lipless?) black face and pearly white teeth. From the pixelated image, it looked as if the person was baring its teeth like a dog. , as one daughter was gifted affections and toys while the other sat with jealousy simmering. Fast forward

Two estranged sisters are brought back to their childhood home to take care of their mother (with dementia) who recently fell into a coma. Neither one of them are really looking forward to it, but some things just need to be done. Jill has never had a good relationship with her mother, and Cheryl, being the younger of the two, had a better childhood. While they both intended on getting everything done as quickly as possible, things obviously are not going to be easy. But not in the way they’d think.

While this book does follow a standard haunting in a house format, I really enjoyed seeing elements of Haitian voudoo and mentions of different spirits, Papa Legba as the most well known of the bunch. This is excellent timing as I had just finished The Good House not long ago, so it was still fresh in my mind. I had not expected their mother, a woman with zero connections to Haiti (ethnically or culturally, minus a trip) to get herself so entangled in this. I’m not super familiar with the culture either, so I cannot judge whether it was accurate or not.

I did enjoy seeing the relationships between the characters change and evolve, and that made this book more personable I guess. I absolutely cannot stand Lee for a few reasons. If you felt the same way, then I wont have to explain.

I flew through the last few chapters of the book because I had to know what happens. In very Boris Bacic fashion, it was not at all what I had expected. If you like twists, entities, and unpredictable endings, give this a try. I thoroughly enjoy Boris Bacic’s books overall anyway, so you bet I have a few more books of his on my TBR.

Her Home by Boris Bacic, will give you a good scare while making you turn pages faster.

Jill and Cheryl are estranged sisters forced to return to their childhood home when their mother slips into a coma. Jill is the older, married sister with a small son. Cheryl is unmarried and was always her mother's favorite, or so it seemed. The sisters need to figure out what to do about their mother and her home, but things begin to happen and mysteries evolve almost immediately. Both Jill and Cheryl are shocked, fearful and thrown into a nightmare that threatens their lives and the lives of Jill's little boy. Read carefully, to the very end and be prepared to be scared!

DNF. This book.....idk. it may be a slow burn but it was way to slow for my tastes. I'm visually impaired, so I really appreciate the fact that an audio format was available. The narrator though, she was terrible. The writing may have actually been good but it was just so hard to listen to this narrator. Talk about monotone. She really made it drag. I couldn't make it past a few chapters. I tried twice to no avail. I'll be looking for the next book to come out. Hopefully it won't be the same narrator.

"Her Home" is the 3rd Boris Bacic novel that I've read and it's also the best one so far!

Boris Bacic is an excellent horror novel author and I encourage you to purchase one of his books and give it a try. If you're a horror fan like I am, I'm sure you will like it and will become hooked on his works. I do have to tell you that English is not his native language and you will find a fair number of grammatical errors in his novels. My advice is to ignore these errors and keep on reading, because his novels are so original and engaging that you won't want to put it down.

Better then I thought

The descriptions were spot on. I could picture everything the author was describing. At first I wasn’t fond of any of the characters but as the story progressed and I got to know them more intimately I really liked them all. It was scary for sure. Creepy. But the story line was just really good. A story that hasn’t been done before. Original. I highly recommend this book.

Scary good

Multiple times reading this book it freaked me out enough that I had to turn a light on. So for that reason I recommend it. As for the 4 instead of 5 stars, the ending wasn't my favorite and it wasn't nearly as good as Yokai Island; which was one of the best books I've read in years. Maybe not fair to compare the two but, well I did.

Good story

I found the story interesting but the f-word was continuous and distracting from the characters. I think the sisters characters could have more back ground and less repetitive screaming and trembling. I hope Boris Bacic will write more stories knowing his fans are looking forward to his next story.

LOVE. I finally found an author of horror who puts chills down my spine. His books, including HER HOME, have had unexpected endings. I usually can predict the plot of a horror book well and don’t typically get a little chill down my spine. His stories are well written, unpredictable, and difficult to put down.

This book had great creepy moments, keeping your senses heightened as you read. I felt like the main characters were well-developed and each had their own quirks. The author keeps good tension throughout and the ending was very satisfying for a horror story. Look forward to the next one!

A creepy story that goes in a different direction than a standard haunted house story. It has strong characters and a sad family story that gets weird and scary before it gets better. The ending kind of throws you for a loop in a “huh, that’s intersection “, kind of way.

Boris can do NO wrong!!! This is the 3rd in the series of Haunted Places, and yes they can all be read individually, but this probably is my favourite so far. Unpredictable, fast paced, great detail and character development.

This one didn't captivate me as much as the other novels in Boris Bacic's Haunted series did, possibly because I'm generally not into voodoo and chants and spells and their ilk. But the idea of malevolent trickster spirits was just good enough to save the novel for me.
