Saviours of Islamic Spirit offers a refreshing perspective on Islamic history through its focus on the roles played by influential muslim personalities in safeguarding Islam. The content is well researched, enlightening and inspirational. I particularly found it inspiring reading about the love these spiritual leaders had for Allah and Islam. However, I did find that the book lacked in depth at times, leaving me wanting more — perhaps a result of this being a summarized translation of the original work. This book can serve as a good introduction to important Islamic figures, but it is not a comprehensive read. I still think this book is a valuable resource, as to my knowledge, few other works take a similar approach to presenting Islamic revival.
It's a good read but it's a summary and tranation of the first volume original book. While summaries do not necessarily need to be bad, this one looses a lot in the process. As such, it feels more like a selection of short and unconnected biographies rather then a coherent and connected historical narrative
10/10. Eloquently translated by Mufti AbdurRahman Mangera, and beautifully structured. Sheikh Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi thrusts readers into the historical and socio-political contexts of these great heroes and then makes us witness how they overcame some of the greatest civilisational challenges this ummah has faced.
The best part is the inclusion of primary texts from contemporaries, and even the heroes themselves, which makes the histories more immersive. Often times while reading this, I would burst into my younger brothers' room and read him extracts as an exciting bedtime story* which they would listen to excitedly. The stories are all inspiring and stir the heart to action. Definitely a must-read for all Muslims of today's age.
*Be warned that Mufti AbdurRahman's translation does use a high level of vocabulary that I had to paraphrase when narrating to younger readers.
It's a 7 volume brilliant book to understand Islamic intellectual History from the very beginning till the end of the 17th century. Personalities like, Abu'l Hassan Al-Ash'ari, Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali, Sheikh Ul Islam Ahmed Taqi ud din Ibn Taymiyya, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jailani, Abdurrahman Ibn Jawzi, Sheikh Ahmed Sirhandi, Shah Waliullah Dehlvi, Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlvi, Shah Ismail Dehlvi Shaheed, Syed Ahmed Shaheed, and many more important figures have been discussed. رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُم
This is definitely one of the best books I've read this year, 2025. It is beautifully written and excellently edited. I wish our Muslim youth would read it and learn about the lives of their pious predecessors. Sadly, the majority of youth today are wasting their time reading trash (fiction stories), neglecting their duty to read good literature and serve the ummah through knowledge.
