The Time Tunnel of August Kaplan

Rate this book
It is strange and life-altering enough when almost thirteen year-old Kate Kaplan and her mom inherit a Chicago brownstone from a long deceased great-great-great uncle, but in a hidden part of the basement, Kate discovers a locked room and a trap door that leads to a closed off tunnel - except on rare occasions when the far ends opens to a time gone by when her triple great uncle August Kaplan lived.

Time travel stories never cease to put my brain in a loop. This one is light on the science and heavy on the family warmth. Ironically the juvenile main character finds more warmth in the past than in the present. Her father is an absent jerk and her mother is stressed and preoccupied. The girl doesn't seem to have friends. The happy ending is a bit pat but enjoyable.

I won this book as a giveaway and I really enjoyed reading it. The characters are fun and it was a fun escape from the real world.

Kate and her mom have inherited a Brown Stone in Chicago, a step up from their tiny apartment hours from the city, from a long lost Uncle who lived over a hundred years ago. They move into the home and find it fully furnished, but from the Uncles era. As Kate explores the home, she finds a lab hidden in the basement that the Uncle used. She sets off to explore it and finds a tunnel that takes her back in time to when her Uncle was alive. Through multiple visits with the Uncle in the past, she is able to help a little girl be saved from illness and horrible factory work and help save the home from her dad, who wants to take it from them.

This was a quick, but fun read!
