The Sentinel's Song

Rate this book
Sabra needed an army of warriors.
She only found one.

Sabra has spent her entire life studying, practicing, and preparing to become Segzein’s Crown Princess. Prepared to take on the burden of the crown - and give up hope of ever finding love - Sabra is confident that she's ready to lead. But just as the crown is within reach, questions about her bloodline give rise to fighting within the kingdom’s clans, and the most indignant of them all gives Sabra an ultimatum: Sabra must step down...or he’ll reduce the kingdom to ashes with the use of ancient forbidden arts.

Sabra wants to fight, but when the dragon brings her kingdom to its knees, she decides there’s only one path she can follow. She must find the Segzein’s eighth clan - the Sentinels. Her only problem? They’ve vanished into thin air.

Against her advisers' will, Sabra goes in search of the missing warriors, determined to stop the dragon without capitulating to his demands. And she finds...one warrior. But only one. And to Sabra's shock, that one warrior has a surprisingly familiar face.

Will the missing clan’s survivor be enough to defeat the dragon? Or will Sabra’s future and her kingdom perish?

Author's Note: The Sentinel's Song is the tenth book in the Classical Kingdoms Collection but can be read as a stand-alone. I've read all of Fichter's work, and admittedly she is one of my very favorite authors. So, I was super stoked for another read. I usually end up dropping everything to pick up the latest release, as I did with this one. And this time, I was even more excited because this stemmed from a short story she'd done before I'd ever found her. She took the story and expanded it and then added it to her Classical Kingdom's collection, which meant I finally got to read it! And, of course, I love the Classical Kingdom's collection! Furthermore, I'd never read a St. George and the Dragon retelling before, so I was really curious about the story.

First, guys, that cover!! Isn't it so cool! I love the colors and the world behind her! And her dress is beautiful.

When I started the book, something about the Segzein culture reminded me of The Green-Eyed Prince, the novella that starts the whole series. Segzein fascinated me. The kingdom was one of my favorite parts of the whole story, and I wish we could have spent even more time reveling in it, though to be fair, I do feel like we got a really solid sense of the kingdom as it was. I loved the different spokes and how each one depended on the other and how they each had an expertise. I wanted to explore them all and learn so much more. I also really thought it was neat how the kingdom settled very nicely into the overall Classical Kingdom's world--those touches from the outer kingdoms were some of my favorites in the book, too!! I won't spoil, but YES FICHTER! That connection was brilliantly executed!

I was drawn in by the smithing and training, the swords and staffs, the mystery culture that had basically ceased to exist. And the singing! What a cool thing to twist in together! The whole concept of the Sentinel's Song was so cool. I loved trying to unravel the mystery of what had actually happened, searching the histories and the people Sabra leaned on to navigate the story. Figuring out what had transpired and how the pieces fit together for the present dilemma was a huge part of what I loved in the story. Maybe it was the fact that I didn't really know much more than a very broad outline for the original fairy tale, but the mystery element in this fairy tale was very refreshing.

It's no secret I love Fichter's characters. This cast felt different to me for some reason, though I'm not sure I can articulate why. I appreciated Sabra's tenacity, kindness, and loyalty in pursuing truth and justice. And her love for her people. That was clear. Her compassion really made her stand out, too. She was a lot of fun to follow. And the little servant boy who followed her around like a pup was really sweet. I liked his character a lot. He was rambunctious and mischievous, but loyal as all get out. And it cracked me up when he met his match! George was quieter, more reserved. I really enjoyed when he came to Segzein and seeing Sabra and George rekindle their childhood friendship--gotta love the childhood friendships, guys!! When we got out to his own home, he seemed much more distant. He closed off a lot. I know not every character can be outgoing! But I felt like I didn't really ever get to know him, who he was, what he cared about, what he wanted. Just his destiny and a few facets of him. I wanted to get more inside his head and see what he was always thinking about. I did love his interactions with Serkan, and I loved his grandparents, too. I would have loved to see more of them, too.

I was very invested in the story. I stayed up way too late on more than one night trying to read as much as I could XD I wanted to know more. And I yelled at Sabra to sing for like half the book! I was waiting for the climax to come crashing together! It felt like a long-time coming, though I enjoyed the journey to get there. The dragon never quiet clicked for me. The Justine's as a whole felt like they were missing something--something small, just a fraction of an inch off. I don't know if I just wanted to understand them better or what. I loved how their history unraveled and their connection to the past and the present and the Sentinel's and the world at large. But I struggled to understand the culture of the larger group--not the select few who guarded their history so well. And Sabra's guard disappointed me. I really had hoped to see him return at some point and contribute in a meaningful way.

There were a few parts where the politics confused me, too. The first time around, I misread a passage and so it took me half the book to figure out I had the marriage laws backwards. Whoops! But even then, I didn't understand how the basniin's got power. Mahzar became basniin, but I don't know how or if it was by design or just arbitrary. I feel like he would have orchestrated the whole thing, but I never understood what his purpose was. It was hinted at several times. If he won, bad things would happen, but I wanted to understand him as a character more deeply. What exactly did he want? What motivated him? Was he just following his law as a legalist or was there something deeper there? Some heavier motivation? And how did he inspire his entire clan to follow him in enforcing the horrendous, unjustifiable acts of violence that he did? Weren't there any of them who disagreed with his interpretation of the law--or his highly destructive ultimatum? I don't know. Just something felt...not quite what I had hoped for a few elements of the story.

That said, I did thoroughly enjoy the book, and adore Fichter. This one didn't quite live up to some of my other favorites of hers, but I'm still gonna buy the book and probably reread it at some point! And I do recommend it for anyone looking for a sweet romance, fun adventure, and satisfying mystery.

There was no foul language, clean romance, and non-graphic romance. I'd recommend the book for early teen and up.

Note: I received an ARC and am giving my honest review of my own free will. (You couldn't keep me from reviewing a Fichter book!)

Loved it

I think this may me my favorite so far. It is a good clean book with lots of adventure. It's about love, honor and sacrifice to do the right thing, and that we never know what the Lord has in store for us, but will reveal it as we stay on His path. It wasn't preachy at all but that theme is there if you look for it. I loved it, a truly uplifting book.

Creative Myth Retelling

I really enjoyed this book. The romance was cute and only had sparks. The story world was very creative; it was set in the same world as previous books, but the nation was fascinating. Overall, I liked it very much.

ked! The Sentinel’s Song was previously published as a novella but the author made it into the full length novel and added it into the Classical Kingdom world. The Sentinel’s Song is the 10th book in Brittany Fichter’s Classical Kingdom series. It is a retelling of St. George and the Dragon.
Sabra has been training and studying to become Segzein’s Crown Princess for her whole life. She is ready to be the best leader she can be, but when the crown is within reach, questions about her right to be queen arise. One of the loudest naysayers gives Sabra and her father an ultimatum: Sabra must step down or he’ll reduce the kingdom to ashes with the use of ancient forbidden arts. Sabra wants to fight, but when the dragons bring her kingdom to its knees, she finds herself on a search for missing warriors. A warrior who can defend her kingdom, but will only one defender be enough?
Sabra was such a strong character, I liked how she always wanted to learn and get better. She wasn’t willing to settle for just being. I loved her growth throughout the book and how she put her people first. She was ready to sacrifice everything so that she could be a good leader. She was stubborn but she tried her best to listen and learn. I just loved reading about her with her cousin and with George. She and George were super cute together!!
George was also awesome! He was kind and I loved how much he cared for Sabra. I liked his character growth and how hard he worked. He loved his grandparents and wanted to protect them, but he also cared for Sabra. He was a warrior, a leader, and a kind person. He was human and there were points where he didn’t understand what was going on, but he wanted to do his best to help Sabra. His greatest wish was to be honorable and stay true to himself.
The Sentinel's Song was a great book! I was enthralled and I couldn’t put it down! The characters were so interesting and they were relatable. Fichter’s books are always great and this was another hit! I would definitely recommend this book! The Sentinel’s Song is a clean, fairy tale retelling romance book

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

Note: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

All I can say is this is one of Mrs. Fichter's best. Seriously. The worldbuilding, the characters, the plot twists, Serkan, the twisted villain...all of it combines into a beautiful story that comes to life off the page. Sabra (yes, like the humus) is a wonderful heroine who is determined to do what's right no matter the cost, and it was so refreshing to see her learn how to be selfless in a new way while protecting her people and caring for those she loved. And don't get me started on George - he is the one of the sweetest male heroes, and who doesn't love the old-friend-comes-back-even-cuter trope? The other characters were lovely as well, as each clearly had their own motivations that were spelled out just enough to make each character feel three-dimensional. (Serkan is a doll and though I'd want to strangle him in reality, he is so sweet in book form.) Even the villain had his own twisted sense of righteousness.
As for the plot, things got a bit muddled for me because "oath" and "promise" were taken to mean the same thing when they are not. An oath is more binding, so it was confusing at points when there didn't seem to be any binding contracts between characters. It also got a bit confusing trying to figure out the timeline, but I believe that was done intentionally, as Sabra only gets answers in tiny bits and pieces. Things only come fully together at the very end.
And the worldbuilding - Mrs. Fichter rocks at doing deserts right. First The Green-Eyed Prince and now this...I want to go live in the desert now for the first time in my life, thank you very much. I loved all the descriptions of the chimneys, caves, thermal pools, and even the city itself.
Overall, I loved it. The romance took a while to build, but dang was it worth it. Worth every second of your time for a rich story filled with love, loss, grief, and finding your purpose.

I had been so swamped with exams that I had not been keeping an eye on my reader groups, so it was a pleasant surprise when this ARC showed up in my email. Some squealing later, because who wouldn't be happy when a book by an author they like show up unannounced, I was already diving into it.

In this book, we meet a heroine who has been adopted by a king and queen, educated from a young age to be the next ruler of the kingdom. Her qualification test is coming up, but there seems to be some holes in her knowledge, something she is trying hard to rectify, despite nobody wanting to tell her of what had happened. Old secrets won't stay hidden though, and this one will lead our heroine on quite the adventure.

As I've come to expect from the characters this author writes, they are pretty fleshed out, so the reader feels like they get to know them really well. The story is really enjoyable, so get your cup of tea and your blanket because you might risk finishing the whole book in one sitting as I did. I was pretty shocked the book was over already when I reached the end, because I felt like I'd just sat down to read it.

Would I read it again? Definitely. I'll probably end up doing a re-read of the entire series when it is finished some day.

The Sentinel's Song is full of mystery, suspense, and clean romance. It was hard to put down as the main characters were gripping and the mysteries just kept coming. The two main characters must discern and step into the roles the Maker created them to play. The book has insightful thoughts on identity, purpose, leadership, family, and the fight of good vs evil. It is also filled with meaningful side characters and relationships that humanize the kingdom and make personal the fight. The setup of Segzein is creative and fun to imagine. Sabra is bold, blunt, determined, committed, compassionate, and curious. George is strong, subtly humorous, self-sacrificial, loyal, and dependable. Can an outspoken royal and a rock like warrior stop the evil that is threatening to take over the entire kingdom? This would be an exciting read for those that like books with strong main characters, kingdom level good vs evil struggles, St. George and the Dragon retellings, fun yet deep reads, creative world and government building, mysteries, sweet childhood friend to lover romances, non gory fight scenes, and great story telling.

I love Brittany Fichter's fairy tale world, and all her stories connected in it, but this one really was something different. I've not seen many retellings of this particular tale, and this is the first I've read, but I loved all the details she used to connect it with her world, along with creating its own world as well. The characters were so memorable, and fun to follow, and you can't help but root for the heroes from the beginning, even while you're constantly on your seat wondering what the truths were and what was going to happen next. It was a great addition to her series and a clever retelling and one I highly recommend.

I'll admit that I while I love fantasy, I tend to enjoy this author's contemporary works more. And to be frank, getting through parts of her Peter Pan retelling was something of a slog. Imagine my surprise when this book turned into one of the best things I've read this year.
The characters immediately sucked me in and the prose never tripped me up. The politics and government were intriguing. The romance was absolutely adorable and I was rooting for them all the way. I may have to go back and read some of this author's earlier books to see if Peter Pan was a fluke.

I did receive a complimentary ARC; all opinions are my own and willingly shared.

Read it!

It took me so long to get around to reading this because I knew once I started, I wouldn’t stop. Another late night, but another satisfying book from Brittany.

I love how her books can frequently be read as stand along novels, and yet they tie in together.

A lot of this book was rather unexpected for me. Even having read the end before the middle (yes, terrible form, I know), I still was surprised by what was happening the whole way through. It was a fantastic read.

Suitable for teens and up
Clean romantically and as far as language goes

I just finished this book last night and can I just say that I'm so glad I can re-read books, because this is definitely one I'm going to revisit! I only discovered this author last week, but am absolutely loving her books. They are clean and fun and beautiful. This one is a retelling of George and the dragon. It has adventure, romance, betrayal, forgiveness and of course a dragon. What more could you ask for?

I swear Fichter's writing just gets better and better! I don't know how she does it, but she's topped herself again. I was so excited for this one, and I could not put it down! It's my favorite since A Curse of Gems. This is such a creative retelling of St. George and the Dragon, and the villian was so intriguing. I loved the mystery aspect of it, and I laughed and cried. I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily posting my review.

Loved this book, but I was left with a lot of questions

I love Brittany Fichter's stories for the truths woven into each of her tales. Truths like we can be really strong standing alone but standing with our spouse magnifies us and makes us stronger still. I love how I can ponder over her books for many days after reading them and this book is no exception.

I really hope that the next book answers some of the questions I have about unlocking people's gifts and how that will affect the other countries.

I'm finally writing this review 3 months after reading this book, but my overall recollection was that I loved this book and Fichter's world-building. I cried and there were some moments that gave me goosebumps. This was a powerful story, IMO. Definitely one I'd reread. There's romance, but it's not central. So much character shown and hard choices to be made.

Strong characters with steady faith whom I loved to follow as the action unfolded. If you're here exclusively for the romance, you'll be disappointed for most of the first third of the book, but I really enjoyed the setup of Sabra's home - her family, her friends, her people, her government, and her place among them all.
