This book approaches food and eating from an endocrinologist point of view. It contains just enough data not to completely discourage someone who has no previous knowledge of the inner workings of the body. It covers why the book recommends eating a certain way, what to eat, when to eat it, how it affects your body all the way down to negative self-talk.

The writer doesn’t re-invent the wheel but basically combines a form of lazy keto with intermittent fasting. There. Saved you £11. It also promises no calorie counting is needed, but unless you have very little weight to lose I still believe it is crucial to do so so you don’t drop and gain the same 2 kgs for weeks. Her reasoning is sound, backed by science, but the one thing that doesn’t add up is the approach of “eating whatever your grandma had access to” and “what you can make at home” yet potatoes are a no because of the insulin response. Insulin is mentioned and plays a huge part in this book, but someone with a working pancreas should have no issues with a reasonable portion of rice or potatoes, in my opinion. My grandma and her grandma quite likely grew up on the stuff.

So yeah, I like the science backed reasoning, but not going to switch my pasta to zucchini shavings, I’d rather just not eat pasta at all. Or even better; a reasonable portion instead of a plateful.

This is a theory and practice book about living well, and whilst food is key to that it's also the sleep, exercise, and mindset that makes it all work.

I've followed the program and results and process are quite something.

Starting in Aug 2022 to present (Jan 24) I've managed to remove the need for alcohol, bread, sugar, processed foods, and sweet foods completely.

Im off the mental and emotional rollercoaster I was on, have lost 3 stone in weight (14 to 11), and consider this a platform to enable new things/projects (started reading regularly, a year in to CrossFit, renovating a campervan, started up a business to name but a few)

It's so powerful.that I'm at a loss as to why it's not a bestseller, other than maybe the 'ignorance is bliss' strategy of British (Americanised?) consumerism is highly effective.

It's telling that those on the authors 'program' are diabetic/severely obese and are desperate/chronic enough cases to be given this 'treatment'.

I say 'treatment', but it's really just taking control over your inputs to have a more sustainable, happier life.

* The content throws a bucket of cold water over everything we've been told about food and nutritional health.
...we often use food as a crutch to feel better and when convenient...
....this means we are on a rollercoaster mood wise as the sugar highs and lows take hold....causing us to repeat the cycle endlessly
...There are a few critical takeaways that once you know them youll always know them (even if you don't follow them)
1. Eating windows are a thing
2. Bodies only know what real foods are
3. Exercise only uses sugar in blood, muscles, then liver....more than 1300cals before touching fat!
4. Sleep is heavily impacted by how well you achieve the above, and also enables it
5. Stop calorie counting all together, and start using hunger to drive eating.

* From experience the effect of this 'diet' is transformational
....it will put you in to a neutral mood zone quite quickly, which can feel low to start but actually is just reality...allowing you to control what you eat/do next
...you'll begin burning fat almost immediately
...you'll be in crisis at times as you realise you don't know what to eat, and thats ok....start prepping batches of food (my solution)....

* But certain things need to be in place
...do it with someone close to you, preferably your partner, so there's mutual habit forming and not disruption/friction
...start it in a holiday at home where you can really invest time and focus
....you'll absolutely need to be prepared to relapse in to convenience food because of time and emotional drivers

* As a book, it is structurally very well written
....from readers perspective (problem, 'choices')
....a lesson in coaching too (takes care of many ways you might think and questions you might ask, and gives you tactics on how to respond. Also, critically, presents everything as choices that you make....you aren't 'allowed' or not allowed anything.

Shoddy science in a patronising tone.
I hoped for some interesting inspiration, but instead it was a lecture. Lots of harking back to "our grandparents" in a truly naive way. I don't think it would be that wonderful if women were prevented from working and spent all day at home cooking and cleaning. And the romanticism of WW2 diet is inane - particularly as we now know the nutrition issues uncovered at the time include rickets and scurvy on a massive scale.

Somehow eaked out "eat more fruit and vegetables" into a whole book.

This book is about so much more than weight loss, its a programme for a more stable mind and body. After a week of following the advice in this book I feel so much more in control of my life, less triggered, quieter, and yes, I've lost bulk...not sure about weight because I don't weigh myself...definitely smaller though, a lot smaller.

Great insight to how easy it can be to better yourself physically through picking the right foods and eating at the right times to mentally assisting and adapting your "thinking brain" to help and not to self sabotage. I will be referring to this book on my own weight loss journey

So much use of the word delicious that became very annoying. Delicious is a subjective word. Poor information/advice on bacon and sausages nitrates need to stress the need to read ingredients of sausages. positives quite a simple approach and I like the advice for clinicians at the back.
