Another Christmas in Alaska book from my Jólabókaflóð!
🐕Book 1: Maggie K. Black's Holiday Heist
Forensic scientist Tala Ekho with the Alaska State Crime Lab is shocked when she runs into K-9 Alaska State Trooper Ian McCaffrey at the mall. They had been friends from 5 years old until a misunderstanding separated them in high school. Tala needs Ian’s help recovering stolen goods. One thing leads to another and soon they’re hot on the trail of the ‘Golden Bandit’ and trying to curb their growing attraction. They both lead complicated lives so they both agree that an added complication is not worth it. Ian and Tala soon learn that they were meant to meet that day! I enjoyed the theme of second chances and didn’t predict the twists.
🐕Book 2: Lenora Worth's Alaskan Christmas Chase
Criminal psychologist Mallory Haru and tech whiz Eli Partridge team up with a traumatized K-9 in fighting gang activity. This was unique because it wasn’t very ‘Christmassy’ and because Mallory and Eli weren’t technically K-9 handlers. I was tense wondering if Eli’s survivalist skills would help him and Mallory against the gang.
I'm all about the cover love when it comes to this book. I mean, really, what's better than one dog on the cover? Two, that's what! And I was super excited to see that these novellas feature two members of the support team we've encountered in the other books. While these novellas bring us to the end of Alaska K-9 Unit series, they can easily be enjoyed as standalone reads so if you're looking for something short and snappy during these hectic festive times this would be a good fit.
Tala rocks in Holiday Heist -- Black did an amazing job of capturing all the idiosyncrasies that make Tala so great at her job as a forensic scientist. I was yo-yoing between hearty guffaws and stunned admiration all the way through. Cadaver dog Aurora (perfect Alaskan name but almost too pretty for a dog who finds dead people.lol) makes for a stalwart secondary heroine who definitely won my heart with her dedicated K-9 zeal and winsome fluffy empathy. And, of course, Ian, dunderhead though he might have been in high school, definitely screams hero material now. So -- eeepppp -- an almost second chance romance because Ian and Tala were best friends from kindergarten until that fateful day their senior year in high school....
Solid suspense, a stuttering romance and a light touch of Christmas makes for a satisfying read.
Then we have Alaskan Christmas Chase - Happy sigh, there's something about a nerd hero with hidden depths that ups my heartbeat every time. :-) Eli rocks as a tech whiz and a wilderness survivalist and both talents come in handy when he and Mallory wind up on a villainous gang's hitlist. Loved the unique twist of both hero and heroine not being law enforcement officers and even their K-9 partner is 'on leave' as he recovers from a traumatic incident so Worth upends the usual tropes in this nail-biting suspense. There's tons of action, lots of danger and some nifty twists as Eli and Mallory face down relentless adversaries with quick wit and quirk...and a little help from the Alaska K-9 team. Very light on the Christmas angle, so could easily be read as a cozy winter read too.
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Christmas K-9 Protectors. This is two extra novellas on the continuity series, Alaska K-9 Unit. These are two of my favorite authors so I was thrilled to get this book in the mail. Both of these stories are well-written, action-packed, and full of suspense. I know you are going to love them.
Holiday Heist by Maggie K. Black
Forensic Scientist Tala Ekho is at a coffee kiosk getting a gingerbread latte when she is sure that the woman beside her is a thief. She saw a state trooper in the jewelry shop. The man that broke her heart in high school. She hadn't seen him in fifteen years. Back to her thief, "Ma'am, I think you took something that isn't yours." The woman took off. She hollered at Ian. Then she ran after her.
Alaska K-9 Officer Ian McCaffrey regretted what happened between Tala and himself all those years ago. She had been his beautiful, talented best friend. Not sure if he was ready to face her, he went after the two women. He had to help her.
Christmas Chase by Lenora Worth
Criminal Psychologist Mallory Haru and Alaska K-9 Unit Tech Eli Partridge are working together to help a traumatized K-9, Koko. She is to come to his place and work with the dog. When she arrives she tells him someone is following her. He had bumped her car with his three times. Gunshots ring out. They go check the barn to find Eli's brother. He had tried to warn Mallory. Someone is after him.
Exciting Christmas adventures for some supporting cha
We heard about the abilities of Tala and Eli during the previous stories, but now we get to see them in action! Tala works with rookie and former best friend K-9 officer Ian and his partner Aurora to try and bring down jewelry and gold theft ring that has its clutches deep. Meanwhile, tech Eli is set to work with psychologist Mallory to try and rehabilitate traumatized K-9 Koko. Little did they know that they were about to meet up with some bad guys in a huge snatch and grab ring who wanted Eli's land. Both stories are very exciting with a lot happening.
The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character and action oriented storyline that has some kisses but no steam. The characters are vivid and engaging. Read this series in order. This book contains #9 and #10. If you like your contemporary romances with a lot of action and some Christian ideals, then this series is for you. Enjoy!
These wonderful stories will make you want to go and find all the rest of the Alaska K-9 books, I’m sure! I loved how these were not only about your regular troopers with K-9’s but rather those whose work is normally behind the scenes. A forensic scientist, a criminal psychologist and a tech wiz would not be the first folks you would think of when considering a K-9 unit. However, things would not run very smoothly without these professionals.
Be ready for twice the enjoyment when you pick up your copy of Christmas K-9 Protectors since this is a two for one! Published by Harlequin, this Love Inspired Suspense was truly a most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or two. These comments and rating are my own and were in no way solicited.
2-in-1 Christmas novellas. Holiday Heist starts with someone trying to kill Forensic scientist Tala Ekho but K-9 state trooper Ian McCaffrey ends up saving her. Will they be able to figure out who is trying to kill her and why and prevent her end?
In Alaskan Christmas Chase, criminal psychologist Mallory Haru is working with a traumatized K-9. Tech whiz Eli Partridge has been asked to help her with the dog and Mallory is pleased as they are friends. Then they end up working together with the dog to keep a Eli's step-brother out of the hands of a robbery gang. Will they be able to figure out who is behind this gang and put a stop to it? Will they be able to keep Aidan safe and well as themselves?
We often find strength in the people we know, associate with and love. However, the greatest strength comes as a gift from God within ourselves. This story reflects all of those elements wonderfully!
Both these stories would have benefitted from an entire book. They ended up kind of shallow. I don't expect Harlequin to provide a psychological thriller but both stories had flimsy reasons for the violence.
Both stories would have been better as full-length rather than novellas. There simply wasn't space to fully develop the stories. But, that said, it was nice to see one more glimpse of some of the side characters in the rest of the series.
