When producing a story that expects the reader to move between time zones, the author must do so with care. Good characterisation is a must, but for that person to have experienced different lives, each must be clearly defined, and believable. The different ‘worlds’ that the character has known should likewise be well-crafted.
This author accomplishes the characterisation and the separate time zones with ease. Ms Donnelly demonstrates her skill by using different techniques to whisk the reader effortlessly across many centuries whether going back in time or returning to the present.
I was impressed by the imagery and dialogue, again, areas that must differ to suit the occasion. The locations are real places and anyone who has visited Scotland will truly appreciate the beauty of the background. As a Scot, I felt at home in every location.
The story includes fear, desire, romance, love, hope, regret, faith, trust and much more. Your heart will warm to the characters and this tale will live on in the memory.
