Is tarot something that has fascinated you for a long time? When some people think of tarot reading, an image of that woman with weird-colored lipstick and scary eyes seated in a dimly lit room comes into mind. It’s the kind of woman who seems to know more about you than yourself. That is not exactly true. Tarot reading should evoke images of a sacred place filled with peace and quiet where you can engage with the cards and understand yourself, your purpose, and your future better. Although there is an increasing acceptance of tarot reading thanks to the internet, there are still many misconceptions out there. In this guide, we will start in the past, looking at the history of tarot reading before observing the decks available. We will then look at cards in both the Major and Minor Arcana and what they mean before learning how tarot spreads and you can tarot read for yourself. As this is a practical guide, this book will provide you with information that you can apply while on your tarot reading journey. You can be certain that by the end of this book, you will be in a position to tarot read successfully and obtain answers to those questions that may be causing you anxiety. As a beginner’s guide, it serves its purpose in conveying the basics of tarot. However, I had issues with this book that have led me to rate it as just “okay.” These might not be deal breakers for everyone, and I’ll concede that some come across as trivial. However, they interrupted my engagement with the text.
This book contained a handful of errors, such as misspelled words, missing conjunctions, and the accidental repetition of words. While these errors didn’t detract from the meaning of the text, I encountered them often enough that I found myself editing the text as I read.
When exploring the possible meanings for the cards of the minor arcana, the author inserts an image of each suit into the chapter, depicting cards from ace to ten. However, there was no image for the suit of wands. (A detail perhaps simply overlooked before publishing?) Further, the images chosen for the remaining suits lack the cards from page to king. The section would benefit greatly from having these cards accompany the text, as it would allow the reader to identify their imagery and make connections between the card and the provided meanings. There is one image of all the cards that make up the minor arcana in an earlier chapter that includes those missing in the minor arcana’s dedicated section, though the image is horrifically blurry (for context, I am reviewing the ebook and the image is blurry without zooming in) and details of the cards cannot be made out. (It is clear, however, that the cards are not from the Rider-Waite deck, which the author appears to have used as their reference when describing the illustrations of the cards; as different decks vary in depictions, it is a curious choice to include images of cards outside of those being used for reference.)
As for the meanings of the cards themselves, the major arcana and the suit of cups were well-defined and had detailed descriptions, but for the remaining suits the definitions devolved into lists of keywords and noticeably lacked the attention given to the cards discussed prior.
If you want a very brief understanding of tarot, this book will suffice, but I would not use it as your sole reference should you choose to take up tarot card reading yourself.
Vivienne Grant has put together a succinct yet comprehensive basic primer for beginners who wish to understand Tarot, what the cards mean, and how to read them. She very clearly walks the reader through everything someone might need to know about this divine and spiritual practice. The author makes it very clear what reading the Tarot cards can, and can not do.
One of the things I really liked about this book is how the author makes it clear that anyone can learn to use Tarot cards. It is something that gives each of us insight into ourselves, helps us with accomplishing our goals and nurtures us as we pass through life. For a basic introduction that is very clearly written out and presented in a manner that is easily understood (which someone like me definitely needs), this book is well worth a read and makes an excellent resource.
Always had an interest in tarot cards so bought this books to understand it better. A lot of information to take in, I use this along my readings I carry out. Ideal for beginners.
