Cleverly written mystery. An opportunity for the main characters' ancestors to 'win' his inheritance by solving a test. Must admit, I was close but didn't pass the test!!
1920s. Who ever solves the puzzle will inherit his estate. Who did kill solicitor James Finchley and why. With no suspects the Yard brings in consulting detective Silvester Locke-Croft. An enjoyable historical mystery.
The solicitor, Mr. Hicks enters his client's quarters. He is informed that he wishes to contract Mr. Hicks company to follow out his wishes to the letter. The client explains he has no heirs and his brother and family are only dependent. He does not wish for them to inherit, nor his adult children. But, the descendent of his brother, who on reaching the age of eighteen and meets the conditions set by his will and the test. The client goes on to instruct upon his death all his property, must be sold, investments, and bank holdings liquidated and held in a trust fund by Mr. Hicks company until the terms of the test have been passed. When the test is passed that person will inherit the entire estate. Mr. Hicks is instructed to return the next morning to retrieve the cloth bag that is to be secured in the companies safe. The bag will contain the test in a separate envelope that has been wax sealed as have the other two. The second will be the solution
