I got caught counting cards in a mob-owned casino.
Now, I owe the sexy mob boss, Kingston Romano, a favor.
And he's come to collect.

I shouldn’t trust him.

Not with my safety, my body, or my heart.

Especially if the rumors are true.

After all, there’s a reason they call him the Dark King.

He’s ruthless. Heartless. Brutal.

But I can’t help it.

Besides, we have a common enemy. And I’ll do whatever it takes to bring down the man who murdered my mother.

Even if that means I have to make a deal with the alluring devil himself.

Please Note: As of January 9, 2021, Wild Card has been updated to include Dark King and does not end on a cliffhanger. It ends with a HEA. !

Kelsie is a sucker for a love story with all the feels. When she's not chasing words for her next book, you will probably find her reading or, more likely, hanging out with her husband and playing with her three kiddos who love to drive her crazy.

She adores photography, baking, her yorkie, Bob, and her devon rex, Mara. And now that she's actively pursuing her writing dreams, she's set her sights on someday finding the self-discipline to not binge-watch an entire series on Netflix in one sitting.

This is the first book from this author that I have read and I thought it was an enjoyable read. This is a mafia romance mixed with suspense. Ace and Kingston were explosive together. This book will keep you invested with each page that you read. You are not going to want it to end. I didn’t realize that it was a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read book 2. I need to know what is going to happen next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Off to the next I go! *cliffhanger, you’re warned*

A really good, yet slightly predictable, read! I loved our characters and I’m anxious to find out what happens next. This is a dark romance, so don’t go into this book expecting prince charmings in the men. They’re lovable a$$holes with questionable morals, yet hot as h e double hockey sticks. Even though our love interest is between Kingston and Ace, we get a few other characters POVs also, and I can’t wait to see how those characters play out in the storyline. Ace is our main female character with a knack for gambling who has a troubled past, and is out for revenge. Kingston is our “dark” hero of the story who is a mafia boss and is known for his ways of getting people to talk, no matter what it takes. There is definite attraction between the two, but because these are both troubled souls in the dark parts of the world that nobody likes to talk about, this isn’t a sweet, watching two people fall in love story. It’s watching two people in a tough situation bond over their circumstances. Overall this was a great read with excellent writing. Again, DARK ROMANCE, so murder, sex trafficking, and other taboo topics are seen in this book. dont read this book and then give it a bad review because of the dark aspects when you were warned beforehand. I read dark romance quite often, so I would say this is a mild/medium on the “dark scale”.

#OMG!
This book was so fucking perfect! It was amazing mafia romance. I loved every minute of it, every page! From the moments I started reading, I could barely breathe.
The story was suspense, romance, sexy, and scary. Great development of the characters and plot.
So much happens with so many different emotions...

Both Kingston and Ace had a tragic past. But they fight for better future. When they meet each other it was love on the first sight. And Kingston ❤️❤️❤️ I'm in love with this man. I'm a sucker for bad boys romance and Kingston is my hero. No. 1 book bad boy. :)

Kelsie is a good writer. I felt in love with her writing style. I will definitely be reading more her work. Her stories are brilliant.

Holy guacamole!!!
This freaking story is so good!
Kelsie’s best book to date!
I cannot even fully express what this book is about without giving anything away and possibly ruining something for you.

I could not put it down.
I didn’t want to put it down.
Too bad I have work, a husband, a kid and home to take care of on days like this when I get sucked into such a wonderful story.
This one had me on my toes a few times. Completely on the edge of my seat.
And that ‘ending’?!?! Eek!!!!

No spoilers from me.
You NEED to read this one. ASAP! It’s book one so you need to know it ends on a cliff hanger. (I always like to know this before starting a new one.)
Give it a try!

Knjigo sem prebrala po priporočilu in kar se mene (in mojega spomina) tiče je tole moja prva mafia romanca.

Tale 250 strani dolga zgodba me je pritegnila in dokončala sem jo res hitro.

For some reason I wanted this book so bad when I first read the synopsis. It had that dark and edgy feel to it. But when it came time to read it, I had to force myself to start. As soon as those first few sentences were read I no longer was forcing myself to read. I was forcing myself to stop.
Ace and King are two different sides of a coin. But somehow they fit. Ace is a nonsense type of person. Which I think made me like her even more. She could tit for tat without even blinking an eye. King hard shell but soft interior. Just made me want to love all up on him. Personalities like theirs should clash but they make it work. But will that be enough to get them through was life has in stored for them?

This was one hell of a fast read and I cannot wait to see what the author has in stored for these characters in her next book.

Just ok. If I haven’t picked up the second book in this series by now, it usually means I won’t.

At first I hated this. A lot of the same old heroines that suffer in silence, think they’re special because they’re ‘different’ from other girls, has a gorgeous BFF and doesn’t know she’s hot until the hero comes along. But the more I read the more I was fine with it. But ‘fine’ as in, when I’m done reading this I won’t ever think back on it again.

This book was definitely a page-turner for me. I'm usually not too much into Mafia Romances (besides the Elite Series by Rachel Van Dyken) but this story pulled me in with Characters that were full of charm and personality. Ace is spunky and fearless as she takes on her past. Falling for the boss of a mob family was never in her radar but the two of them are magnetic and steamy.

Review: I loved this book. This book follows Ace and Kingston. Ace is caught counting cards in a mob owned Casino. Now she owns mob boss Kingston Romano a favor. They have one common enemy and will do whatever it takes to take them down even if it means making a deal with the devil. I loved this storyline. I really enjoyed the writing. I really enjoyed the relationship development between Ace and Kingston. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

‘Wild Card’ is the first book in the Advantage Play series by Kelsie Rae, and it is the first Mafia romance I have read in a very long time.

The book is fast paced, exciting and an incredibly addictive plot. I began reading last night and almost read it all in one sitting, refusing to end my reading journey due to being completely inmersed.

The story focuses on Ace, a beautiful young card counter who frequents the city’s casinos in order to to gain money for her ultimate goal. For years she has been focused on extracting her revenge on a man she despises, and in order to carry out her plan she needs to accrue 50 thousand dollars, and enter in the biggest Poker tournament around against her nemesis.

It all sounds simple in theory, but with Burlone having many enemies, Ace is not alone in wanting to take him down.

Kingston Romano is newly appointed mafia king, and as part of his role, he is determined to dominate the city and get revenge on his competition Burlone. With a big deal going down and Burlone attempting to frame his men, Kingston can not afford to fail. In order to be one step ahead, he enlists Ace to retrieve information from casinos, unaware of just how invested she already is in Burlone and his games.

But when Regina Romano, Kingston’s sister disappears, the stakes of the game just got higher and the danger gets hotter.

I absolutely loved the cliffhanger ending, and need to read Dark King immediately! An amazing read with some very intriguing characters. It blurs your view of morality when you want the Romano’s to murder and come out on top. I am looking forward to retrieving answers to the mysteries that book one has already begun, and I’d recommend to all action and mafia/ gang romance lovers.

Wild Card is the 1st book in the Advantage Play series by Kelsie Rae and it's a departure from what she normally writes; she usually writes sweet, lighthearted and romantic romances yet Wild Card is a deliciously tempting dark romance that will take you on quite the emotional rollercoaster journey and it's only book 1.
The pace is quick, the action is intense, and there's quite a bit of angst and intrigue to keep you on the edge of your seat woven through the book to keep you hooked from start to end. And the chemistry between Ace and Kingston- wowza!!! Talk about steamy!! The ending ends on an cliffhanger that has me dying for book 2. This is one amazing book 1 in a totally new trilogy that is undeniably hot, sexy, suspenseful, provocative and interesting. I can't wait for book 2.

Kelsie is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read and loved all her books, this one included. Wild Card is a mafia romantic suspense, I really enjoy suspense and this book did not disappoint. Ace, the female lead character, has not had an easy life. Despite all of the adversity, she hasn’t let it stop her from going after her goal. Too bad her main goal is to get revenge on one of the top mobsters in town. Kingston, the male lead, has recently taken over control of the Romano family when his father passed away. He has a reputation of being ruthless and everyone is afraid of him, everyone except for Ace.
Wild Card is a slow burn romance and it ends on a cliffhanger. Luckily, the next book comes out really soon.

Blown away by this amazing book. I have read every single one of Kelsie Rae’s books and this is a totally new direction for her. I’m in love with this!

Mafia romance with so many twists, point of views and turns you will be on the edge of your seat! It does end in a cliffhanger, but don’t let that stop you.

The chemistry between Ace and Kingston is off the charts hot! I love them and what is starting between the two of them. The storyline is fantastic and keeps you on your toes. A book you won’t want to put down.

Way to go girl! I knew you had it in you—I freaking loved this book!!

I enjoyed this read. This book gives multiple P.O.V's (not just main characters) and I liked that and thought it was very original. The storyline was interesting and offered plenty of excitement, danger, drama, suspense and romance. I liked Ace and Kingston's chemistry and I found the first piece of their slow burn romance to be very entertaining. This book does end on a cliffhanger. This is my freely posted honest review.

Contemporary Romance, Adult, Mafia

First Person, multiple-POV

Book #1 of the Advantage Play series. It has a cliffhanger at the end.

...the term advantage player, which refers to a person who uses legal methods to gain an advantage while gambling, such as counting cards, but it can also be attributed to poker.

by Ace

Addictiveness: 4/5  This story was fast paced and kept me interested until the end. It was a sexy read with a bit of suspense.  As addictive as pizza!!!

Character: hero 4/5, heroine 4/5, secondary characters 4/5, growth 4/5, real 3/5 Characters were well constructed and not one dimensional. They were very likable and easy to connect.

Kingston was a good antihero. That man is no hero, he lived by a totally different code of honor than the norm, but inside their out of ordinary world he was really good. In fact, with Ace he was a big softie. He was hot and sweet.

Ace was a great heroine. I really liked her. She didn't have an easy life and she didn't have much to look forward than her revenge. She was pretty young and naive for somethings, but very mature for others.

Several interesting secondary characters that I know will get their book in the future.

Villains... they were easy to hate and easy to discover who they were.

I do have to say, these characters were very softhearted mobsters, it didn't feel very real at times.

All characters were easy to love, connect and understand.

Cover: art 5/5, title 5/5, color-font 5/5, buy 5/5  I’m obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. I love how this cover has being made for this particular story. We can see Ace at the cover, hugging King, but since this is her book, her nickname at the cover, we don't see his face. We can see the cards that fits Ace perfectly. I love the color, font and specially placement at the book.  I would easily buy this book by its cover, without needing to read the blurb!

Freshness: 4/5 This was a mob romance with an original concept. The plot was not the usual for a mafia romance.  As fresh as ice cream.

Plot: believable 3/5, conflict 4/5, dialogue 4/5, ending 3/5, enjoyment 4/5, opening 4/5, pace 5/5, setting 5/5, subplots 4/5, twists 4/5  Good opening and cliffhanger at the end. I like the conflict, the subplot and the twist at the end. The pace was great and kept me at the edge of my seat. High level of enjoyment!

Romance: believable 5/5, chemistry 5/5, description 3/5, development 3/5, steam 2/5  It was instalove. Even though there are not many sexy scenes yet, their chemistry was strong and they fell in love fast. King was very protective of her from the beginning and it was very believable his feelings for Ace. The couple smut scenes were good, but not very descriptive. Affectionate love!

Writing Style: 4/5 This book had a great plot, with good characters and cute romance. Perfect pace with an original concept that had me wanting more at the end. Looking forward to read more! Good writing!

Believability: The mobsters were too soft and it didn't feel real. Not only the main character, but his second hand guy was sweet at times. I know, by in my mind, sweet should never enter in the same line with mobsters. :)

Also, some of the dialogues felt too young, or again, soft for the suspense and dark tension that should be there.

The pace of this story was so good, that it kept the suspense going and the tension flowing.

I also loved how the author used multiple point-of-view that made it easier for us to understand what was going on.

I have to mention if I had to give a tag, I would say sweet mobster romance.

I ended the book wanting more, and I’m glad the wait is not very long, because I'm ready for the second book.

29/35 STARS –  4 STARS (between 28 stars and 31 stars)

Addictiveness: 4 Character: 4 Cover: 5 Freshness: 4  Plot: 4 Romance: 4 Writing Style: 4

Action 4/5

Angst 2/5

Darkness 0/5

Humor 0/5

Romance 5/5

Suspense/Mystery 4/5

Would I recommend? Sure. If you are looking for a sweet mafia romance.

Would I re-read this book/series? I will definitely follow the series, but I guess I would only need to reread the book if the wait between books from the series is too long.

Would I read more from the author? Yes.

You may read this because you like the author; you SHOULD read this because you enjoy mafia romance; you MUST read this for a fast-paced suspenseful romance!

5 stars! (reviewing for both wild card & dark king.) I loved this book! I am a huge fan of Kelsie’s hockey romances, but i’m also a dark romance lover at heart, so when I found out she has a mafia series, of course I had to get my hands on it!
I absolutely love Kingston. This kind of book is PERFECT if you’re looking to get started in dark romance. Kingston has the “touch her and you die” thing down pat! The story has been absolutely hooked, and I am ITCHINGG to keep reading to figure out who the rat is!
Ace is such an amazing FMC. She’s powerful, but she has her limits. One of my pet peeves is when an FMC is so confident about every little thing. Ace is only confident in the things she knows she can be confident about. It’s very nice to see a character have highs and lows, it makes it feel more real. She’s very smart, and plays her cards well *pun intended*.
Yet another five star read from Kelsie Rae!!

This started off super strong for me! I loved where it was going (sneaking around, forbidden, the banter), and I enjoyed the plot for the most part. But that being said, there was no reason for this book to be as long as it was. It started to drag around the 70ish % mark. I truly dont care that much about poker and all the details to learn it. I just feel a lot of items were dragged out more than they needed to be. Overall enjoyed it just was not my favorite. We shall see for the rest of the series.

Love Ace she's awesome. Her strength and courage is so inspiring. Kingston is this tough mafia bad@$$ but Ace brings a different side out of him. He's soft with her even when he has to be head of his family. But then all h=!! breaks loose and he has some really tough decisions to make. I'm glad I waited til this series was complete because this one ends on a cliffy and I'm NOT happy... lol

dnf @ chapter 23. hero isn't charismatic and the heroine is the old cliche type. suffers in silence, doesn't think shes pretty until he comes along. its an interesting plot.

h is a smart woman who plays casinos and H owns one of the casinos she swindled. BUT both characters dont have depth, chemistry or anything I havent seen in other books before. it was just ok. and i stopped because the plot is so overdone i dont really care what happens next.

Ok Kelsie Rae

Here's your review - although AT THIS MOMENT - I don't like you very much! A cliffhanger, REALLY - UGH!! ~~
I would give this book/story 10 stars if they were available - it is THAT GOOD! You KNOW I've already got Book 2 & 3 in my KU library. I'm an Ace fan. And I'm ready for the bad guy to get what's coming.
Thank you for your time, talent and THE STORY!

Only One Complaint

My only one complaint is it ends in a cliff hanger but that can be readily fixed by getting the next book in the series. I liked the chemistry between Ace and Kingston. I hope the next book will reveal more about Jack’s role and that it is as enjoyable to read as this one was.
