Yet another book by 月下蝶影. I've read quite a few of her historical romances, and they're always a good read. When I saw that another one of her novels recently finished getting translated, I immediately added it to my to read list. This one is more lighthearted than most of her stories, plus there's no transmigration, so it's a bit different than her other stories I've read.
The FL, Ming Jiuzhu, was raised in a temple and recently found and brought back to the capital by her long lost parents. Her father and two uncles are all respected scholars and officials working in government, so they're dismayed when the emperor bestows an imperial marriage on the FL to his 5th son and ML, Yun Duqing i.e. Prince Chen. Prince Chen is the son of the favored concubine, Consort Su, and the mother-son pair has always acted arrogantly and without discipline, so her family isn't happy about the marriage. Even though Prince Chen is treated well by the emperor, Ming Jiuzhu's family doesn't see a good future for him and don't want her beloved daughter to be associated with him.
What Ming Jiuzhu's family doesn't realize is that Consort Su and the ML were her saviors from long ago, when they were traveling incognito with the emperor and saved her from drowning. Ever since then, she has wanted to look for her saviors to thank them, and fate brought them together with this marriage decree. Because of their history, the FL starts out with a positive impression of the mother-son pair, and that impression only gets better with how well they treat her. And the feeling is mutual. Even though the ML and his mother don't realize initially that Ming Jiuzhu is the girl they saved many years ago, they can tell that she genuinely likes them and means every word she says when she praises them, so they all have a great relationship right from the get go.
The story has some schemes, since inevitably the other princes are jealous of Yan Duqing's favor from the emperor and try to bring him down, but the schemes somehow all get thwarted by the FL. For example, an incident was planned at the horse farm that's meant to kill the ML, but the plan gets thwarted when the ML changes his plans and goes with the FL to a different part of the farm to pick out a pet horse for her instead. Or when she smells something off with the incense and realizes something poisonous has been added to it. She's really a good luck charm for the ML and his mother XP It's funny how everyone keeps overthinking her relationship with the ML and his mother, not realizing that they all genuinely get along, and also question where her Ming family plays into all of it.
Even though the story has some schemes, but it's told in a relaxed slice of life manner, and the schemes are written in a way that they come up from time to time but aren't the bread and butter of the story. Since it's a slice of life, the story follows Ming Jiuzhu as she lives her daily life, first as a daughter in the Ming family before she marries into the palace. There are some mildly amusing parts of the story, like how she encounters stories about an arrogant and mean prince in the local teahouses (spread by one of his brothers) and counters them with stories of a domineering but kind-hearted prince XP
The FL is such a confident and positive character. She has her own beliefs and doesn't let others sway her with their opinions. Also, she's a great influence on everyone around her. Because of her, the ML strives to be a better person and actually works hard when the emperor assigns him to work under his father-in-law in the Ministry of Rites. I also love that she extends a helping hand to anyone in need, whether it's an unknown maid in the palace she randomly comes across or one of her sisters-in-law who's in danger from her crazy prince husband.
The romance is also super cute and fluffy with no drama. The prince is whipped for his princess haha There are lots of cute scenes where they hold hands or whisper to each other lovingly, lost in their own world, much to the envy of everyone else looking on.
Overall this was a pretty lighthearted and fun read. Would recommend to fans of the historical romance genre!

5/20/25 I was laughing out loud through reading so many of these chapters - even posted like "favorite author is favorite author for a reason!!!"
Although I did feel it slightly petered out. [Sigh.] What is up with this author's obsession with rebellions at thend? >.> Or am I confusing her with someone else? But anyway that just ... wasn't well done. Is she hoping it gets optioned/did it already and that was thrown in for drama?
I unexpectedly read two "perfect plucky" FLs in a row. Here FL is ... SO positive and earnest and sweet nobody can bear to point out "the truth." To her. Also, some things she sees clearly, but they don't matter to her. She's just so darling. As noted, super "overpowered."
I loved the connections, and how FL was their little lucky star. I also loved how good the emperor was - SO kind, even to all the women - "his women" - who betrayed him.
As stated in my notes - I WANTED MORE! LOL More more more! I wanted to see the emperor retire and live happily and get to go off to play and ML and FL live together and have kids and be happy! GIVE ME MORE!

ตอนแรกยังนึกว่าจะเขียนแหวกแนวออกมาแนวไหนได้อี��หนอ?
ปรากฏว่าก็ไม่เชิงแหวกแนว แต่อ่านสนุก เพลินๆ
นางเอกของเรื่องชื่อ "หมิงจิ่วจู" อายุประมาณ 17 เป็นลูกสาวของตระกูล
ขุนนางตงฉินแต่เพราะตงฉินช่วงแรกเลยลำบาก ส่งผลไปถึงหมิ่งจิ่วจูตอนเด็กด้วย
ทำให้ต้องโตมากับนักพรตเต๋าที่ต่างเมือง กว่าจะได้มาเจอและอยู่กับพ่อแม่

ไปๆ มาๆ คือฮ่องเต้จับคู่ให้พระเอกกับนางเอกแต่งงานกัน สองคนนี้เจอกันมาก่อนแล้ว
แต่ความสัมพันธ์แรกๆ บริสุทธิ์มาก เหมือนเด็กสองคนคุยกัน หาเรื่องเล่นสนุกกัน
นางเอกเป็นคนทำให้พระเอกเป็น a better man เพราะอยากให้คนที่ตัวเองชอบ

ตอนแรกยังนึกว่าจะเขียนแหวกแนวออกมาแนวไหนได้อี��หนอ?
ปรากฏว่าก็ไม่เชิงแหวกแนว แต่อ่านสนุก เพลินๆ
นางเอกของเรื่องชื่อ "หมิงจิ่วจู" อายุประมาณ 17 เป็นลูกสาวของตระกูล
ขุนนางตงฉินแต่เพราะตงฉินช่วงแรกเลยลำบาก ส่งผลไปถึงหมิ่งจิ่วจูตอนเด็กด้วย
ทำให้ต้องโตมากับนักพรตเต๋าที่ต่างเมือง กว่าจะได้มาเจอและอยู่กับพ่อแม่
ก็เป็นสาวมากแล้ว

I really enjoyed this one and it actually made me cry twice!
The premise of the story is that the (only) daughter of a respected family in the capital gets engaged to the son of the favored concubine of the emperor. The prince has a terrible reputation and while he isn't accused of murder or something as grave as that he is considered a bit of a local tyrant. He is the fifth of his brothers and very much favored by his mother as well.
The female lead is very charming. Due to political circumstances her father and his brothers got exiled when she was a baby and to spare their newborn daughter they send her to their extended family. This family did not take care of the kid but left her to die in the wild. Thankfully she was taken in by a pare of daoist nuns who raised her with love and a (very, very) healthy sense of self-worth. Her family later finds her and brings her back... only for the emperor to declare the marriage that her family doesn't really want. The only one who is pretty much on board from the beginning is the female lead! She has met that infamous mother-son pair before and left a life-saving impression on her. When she finds out who her future husband and her future mother-in-law are she is delighted!
What kind of sets that story apart for me was the refreshing characters of the female lead. She is very pure and good natured without being overly naive or stupid. She is not savvy but she is smart and she genuinely believes that the ML is a good person... something he ends up wanting to live up to. It also helped that the setting made some great changes to this typical setup- such as the fact that there is no empress!
This novel has great family interactions, great characters and a great emperor. I really adored his love for his consort.

ชอบที่ธีมของเรื่องเป็นว่า คนดีๆ ควรจะได้เจอเรื่องดีๆ มีชีวิตที่ดี จบอย่าง Happy Ending
นางเอกเป็นคนดี ใสซื่อ จิตใจดี แต่ไม่โง่ มีความสามารถพอจะปกป้องตัวเองและคนอื่นได้
พระเอกดูเหมือนเป็นคนเสเพล แต่จริงๆ ก็จิตใจดี และตั้งใจทำตัวให้ดีขึ้นเพื่อนางเอก
นิยายบอกเราว่า คนรักกัน สำคัญที่การไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจกัน สนับสนุนกันทำในสิ่งที่ดี และเป็นคนที่ดีขึ้นเพื่อกันและกัน
หลายๆ เหตุการณ์ เป็นความบังเอิญที่ดูเหมือนตลก แต่ก็คือเป็นผลจากการตั้งใจทำดี ที่ส่งผลดีกลับมา
เรียกว่า ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว
ตัวเอกไม่ได้ย้อนอดีต ไม่ได้กลับชาติมาเกิดใหม่ ไม่รู้เรื่องราวในชาติก่อน
คนที่รู้คือ second female lead ซึ่งเมื่อรู้ ก็ทำตัวเองเปลี่ยนไป ทำให้ชะตาชีวิตของพระเอกนางเอกเปลี่ยนไปด้วย
จาก Tragic ending ของหลายๆ คน กลายเป็น Happy Ending ของเกือบทุกคน
