Here Be Dragons #1

Dragon Ever After

Rate this book
Note to self: You can’t teach an old dragon new tricks… he likes to invent his own.

After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out what my next steps will be.
Although… maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get… boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord’s shed is just the kind of excitement I need—especially when he brings his species leader to my door.
Brandt. Wing leader of all dragons, suave, sexy, and… slightly unhinged. It doesn’t take much for him to convince me to give up my solitude and spend some time getting to know him. It’s hard to care about the future when I’ve got a dragon of my own to “play” with. Naked dragon rides for the win, right?
But Brandt’s the leader of his people, on call for them all the time, and I’ve left that part of my life behind me. Plus my father insists I should fulfil my duty to the family by getting a nine-to-five job and “marrying well.” That’s not what I want, but riding herd on a group of beings who fly, breathe fire, and could literally crush me beneath their feet would be a huge challenge, especially since Brandt’s kind of loose with rules.
It all comes down to how much I want my very own dragon ever after.

This exciting spin-off from the Hidden Species series kicks off with Percy's story.

LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.

WHAT I WAS EXPECTING: 😁

WHAT I GOT: 😡

Here I was reading dragons, magic, dragons, elves, dragons, hellhounds, dragons, dragons, dragons, then I read the following, which I honestly thought was some kind of a joke. But sadly was NOT.
Oh my goodness, he’s going to see my panties. Shit. Shit shit shit. I really didn’t think this through. If I had, I would have put on ordinary boxer briefs this morning.

But I wanted a confidence boost, so instead I’m wearing a lovely pair of red panties with soft lace trim, never mind that the thing I wanted confidence for would mean taking off my pants!
Needless to say, when I checked and saw that the panties were a recurring theme throughout the ENTIRE rest of the book, completely out of character from how we'd gotten to know Percy in the previous 4 books, my deathly allergic reaction to panties stories made the decision for me and I couldn't continue reading.

So sadly, this one was a DNF for me. 😭

I think this is my favourite Louisa Masters read to date. Interestingly, really, because I’ve honestly enjoyed all her books so far, but something about this one filled my good vibes cup to overflowing!

Firstly, this may be the first in a series, but it’s certainly not what I’d consider a standalone, so if you’re eyeing this but haven’t already read Masters’ Hidden Species quartet, then I suggest you hit the brakes and pull a uie, because starting there is highly recommended for anyone who wants to actually know these characters and their backstories before kicking off.

Now that bit of housekeeping is out of the way, I’m delighted to say this first (spin-off) book in the dragon-themed MM series was an absolute delight to my heart and soul.

Percy used to be the Lucifer—a job title rather than a fallen angel—but now, after the happenings in the Hidden Species series (see! Important!), Percy is feeling a little listless and unmoored from his purpose and place in the world.

He finds his way nicely though, once he reconnects with Brandt, a four-thousand-year-old dragon shifter and wing leader to his people, whom—spoiler if you haven’t read Hidden Species—migrated to Earth after the collapse of their world during the events of Sorcerers Always Satisfy.

These two always held an unspoken attraction to one another, but—what with their pressure filled positions in their respective supernatural communities, and also, like, the whole dimensional world collapse issue—they didn’t really have time to act on said attraction before now.

Here, at last, their time has finally come and I couldn’t help but laugh (a lot) over Brandt’s eagerness to win Percy’s heart—and also get him naked as much as possible—to which, usually strait-laced Percy is all-too-willing to surrender himself to.

This story didn’t have a big overarching mystery/action plot like the previous series, but I didn’t find myself missing that at all. Rather, this was simply a fun, sweet and definitely sexy tale of two revered men—dragon and cat shifter—finding each other after a lifetime of responsibilities and loneliness.

My heart-strings were tugged a time or two, but mostly, as is now the norm for my experiences with this author, I spent a lot of the story smiling or physically laughing out loud, over the titillating conversations and head-shaking shenanigans the wider cast of characters got themselves into. Yes, Percy’s old teammates are back and as ridiculously funny and loyal as ever, but it was also highly amusing meeting more of Brandt’s dragon shifters, many of whom had me bursting out laughing with their questions and comments only the newly assimilated to humanity would come up with.

The humour really is top notch and definitely my favourite/surefire aspect of what drives me to read more and more of Lousia Masters works, but I’ve also come to consider her paranormal/fantasy romances to be some of the best romances, found family, save-the-world-type stuff I’ve read in the MM genre in quite some time. And, naturally, I’ll be back for more.

Second reading 010/2025
It was only a few weeks ago that I read this book, but since I mistakenly didn't read it in the correct order, I thought I would have to read it again now that I had finally caught up on all the previous books. And yes, I can revise my rating upwards.
It was so wonderful to read Percy's story now that I knew everything that came before. It was a truly necessary and magnificent book.

First reading 06/2025
This is a very entertaining, quick read.
I recommend reading the blurb and not being as stupid as me and just jumping in blindly because the book happens to be lying around.
This is a spin-off. And since I haven't read any of the books this series is based on, I found that a bit annoying. I think it works great as a stand-alone novel. Still, it's a bit frustrating when you come across characters and historical references throughout the book that you would have known if you had started from the beginning instead of just picking up this book.
Still, it was enjoyable, and not too annoying that I didn't know about all the other things.
As for the story itself... absolutely hilarious and ridiculous. With numerous characters that made me laugh.
However, you shouldn't look for any depth in this book. And if you hate slightly immature characters, then this could be a deal-breaker. Because although many of the characters here are incredibly old, some of them are very childish in their behavior. But even though I really don't like that, it wasn't annoying at all, but made me giggle a lot.
Percy and Brandt are very cute together. Their relationship is very insta-ish, but they've known each other for years, albeit from a distance, so the development of their relationship is super fast but still feels genuine.
And then there's the anatomy of the two species they represent and a very special type of reproduction... oh my!

Ever been kissed by a thirty-thousand-year-old dragon? No? You absolutely must try it. His lips are soft, but the pressure is firm, and he takes charge like nobody’s business, hauling me close and bending me back over his arm. It puts me off-balance, reliant on him to keep me from falling, and never before have I realized how much I wanted to give up control. Not until this very moment, when Brandt takes it from me and leaves me to trust that he can keep me upright and feed all my needs.
And he does.
🫠🐉🫠

“Who knew keeping you satisfied would be so much work?” Brandt murmurs, wrapping his arm around me again. “I can tell you’re going to keep me on my toes.”
I grin, my eyes closing. “Better take your vitamins.”
🤭🐉🤭

The dragons are all pretty interesting, but I think I should read the original series first before continuing with this…

Yay for Percy and Brandt

I've been waiting for this book ever since the previous Hidden Species series began, I just didn't know it would be Dragon Wing Leader Brandt who would be giving Percy his Happy ending until the previous book.

And let's say from the off, it was absolute perfection, with just the right mix of humour, smexy times, and a bit of outside tension, to roll the narrative along.

I love this world so much I wish it were real! It's such a wonderfully imaginative scenario filled with all the things I love most about urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Now I'm eagerly waiting for Dustin to get his own bonded soul!

* 2.5 stars *

Percy was the former Lucifer, but he's been retired for a few years now from that position and he has decided to take a little time for himself, away from any responsibilities.

Brandt is the leader of the dragons that have migrated to Earth after their own dimension collapsed, so he has a lot of responsibilities.

When the story starts, they already know each other in a passing way, but they don't really have any kind of a relationship. That changes very fast, as they're both attracted to the other.

The author obviously has a very vivid imagination and she did wonders while building this world. It's complex, without overwhelming the reader, and incredibly interesting. I wanted to learn as much as possible about it and I was looking forward to any tidbits of explanation.

As much as I liked the premises, I can't say the same about the characters. The MCs, as well as the side characters, were written in a very weird way. First of all, they all read the same way so it was difficult to tell them apart. Everyone had the same sense of humor, reacted the same, spoke the same.

Also, all of them were extremely immature. They behaved like teenagers instead of grown up professionals. It bothered me so much that at some point it started affecting even my enjoyment of the world building.

Maybe me and his author's writing style just don't mesh. Maybe I'll try another book by her in the future and it will make my top 10 reads. Who knows? For now though, I think I'll sit the rest of this series out. I'll say again that the world building was brilliant and it's just the characters' behaviours that I had a problem with.

Baring Joel Leslie's superb narration:

I was kinda disappointed with this book because:

A: Percy The LUCIFER was so insecure and just spineless.

B: Brandt: The 30-thousand-year old dragon, who is responsible for other dragons, was immature and frankly too silly.

I think this series has went off the rails a bit. I really wish the second book in this series is better.

I KNOW this is fiction. I KNOW this is supposed to be a humorous urban fantasy series. But somethings don't add up. Less is more.

Louisa Masters and Joel Leslie are always a hit for me! While Dragon Ever After in the new Here Be Dragons series is a spin-off of the Hidden Species series we still enjoy so much of the laugh-out-loud antics and craziness from that world. And who better to start that off than Percy, the old Lucifer, finally getting his HEA?

Honestly, I can't say enough good things. First, I unequivocally love dragons. Add in Louisa Master's world that entails dragons and their crazy hell hound type antics, and just sign me all the way up!

Just as a general housecleaning effort- I will say that you will be missing a lot of cues of this Hidden Species/Here Be Dragons world if you have not read the Hidden Species series first. You might be fairly lost on magic and demons, etc plus who the Lucifer is and why they are important. Plus, plus, the world where the dragons came from and how they came about being transplanted here is also obliquely significant. Just start with that series first. 1. You will NOT be disappointed (Demons Do It Better audiobook is one of my all-time favorite books) 2. It is really funny and pretty steamy 3. Just all the side connections of the characters really add to the overall world story.

From the onset of the book, the author's humor really just sets the pace. I love Percy and I was all the way here for his story. We briefly met Bran in the previous series and was happy we got to see more fully into the "dragon" world dynamics.

The overarching mystery plot was missing, so far, out of the Here Be Dragons series but I'm not mad at it. I am always wildly entertained by the author's books and Dragon Ever After was no exception.

Joel Leslie's narration on these two series has been absolute aces for me. As always he is one of my absolute go-to narrators. SO, IMHO, you simply cannot go wrong with his audiobooks. He could probably read the phone book and figure out a way to make it entertaining. His characters alone are worth the price of admission. I honestly cannot find anything critical or negative to write and I simply don't care to.

I absolutely cannot wait for Dustin to get his own story and am eagerly awaiting the audiobook later this summer (fingers crossed).

*I had the absolute privilege of getting an ARC from the publisher and Netgalley and I could not be more grateful. All thoughts and comments are my own.*

I'm new to Louisa Masters' paranormal universe, and I didn't realize Dragon Ever After was a spin off. I had no trouble following along, though I might have enjoyed it more had I been familiar with the background of the story.

The romance is warm and fuzzy, the creatures in this paranormal world are interesting and creative, and it's a sweet, low-angst tale.

Joel Leslie performs the audio version, and I was just a little disappointed. I'd have liked to see a little more variety between the voices he used for the main characters. Mr. Leslie definitely makes the most of the humor running throughout this story though.

thank you to Tantor Audio through NetGalley for providing an audiobook copy of Dragon Ever After for the purpose of my honest review, all opinions are my own

I really enjoyed watching Percy go from the outwardly self-assured lucifer from the original series to getting to see how he really sees himself when we get his POV, here. He's not always as sure of himself as he likes to project, and he has a tendency to say very suggestive things at just the wrong moment. #NakedDragonRidingFTW

I enjoyed getting to know the real Percy. All his quirks and his daddy issues and insecurities but also what a good friend he is to those close to him. There's a reason the magic chose him to be the lucifer for 50 years. He cares and he makes others feel more at ease.

And Brandt was delightful and confident. And a little bossy. And a touch possessive. But he was also patient and serious when he needed to be. I was concerned that dragons being as drama-prone as hellhounds was going to negatively affect my enjoyment, but thankfully, that wasn't the case, here.

Overall, I enjoyed this beginning to the new series. It's less "the world is gonna end if the bad guys get the upper hand" and more "it's time to live our best lives." So if you're looking for the conflict of the first series, you might be a touch disappointed, but hopefully you'll find it as fun as I did.

Joyful no angst read
The book made me laugh out loud and I loved both Percy and Brandt and all the dragons. Not much was happening from the plot perspective, but Percy/Brandt interactions with each other and with secondary characters were hilarious and kept me entertained from start to finish.
It was my first Louisa Masters' book and I will definitely read more.

Reread edit: listened it on audiobook. I liked it a lot better on the second round, knowing what context came before and even what happens after. Knowing what's going on did definitely affect the rating. Raised it to 4 stars.

---------

For the second time this month, I walked into a book that was the first in a series, felt I was missing a lot of context, and came to find it's a sequel series. So I did miss context, four whole books of it!
As for that, there were many events I don't particularly understand. However, the story was sweet and the characters likeable. It was also well written, and while I know I'm missing context the worldbuilding seems solid. I imagine my rating would be higher if I'd not felt so lost through so much of the book. It's hard to separate said confusion from my ability to enjoy it.

Really enjoyed seeing Percy get his HEA!

The Tea Trials sounds absolutely amazing, but that could just be the English in me - cannot beat an afternoon tea! I'm currently working my way through a tea advent calendar so I can totally relate to the excitement of trying new tea blends to find your favourite, but I can't bake at all so I'm kinda jealous they had cake also 😂

The dragons are absolute chaos gremlins who saw the hellhounds and raised the bar for being overly dramatic, but they are so entertaining to read about. Looking forward to the next installment.

The author did such an amazing job on this book! Fascinating world building, characters that come to life so perfectly they practically jump off the page and a love story that had me crying tears of happiness multiple times. Plus book two will be out very soon!

Felid shifter meets dragon shifter (whom he already knew from previous books/series) and decide they want to be a couple. Pretty straightforward, VERY sweet, humorous and light. Good writing and the kind of humor that doesn't turn obnoxious or corny too soon (for me). I really enjoyed it, but it's not the kind of book I can read in a regular basis, just as a dessert. For my main course, I need more substantial (and less sugary) stuff.

It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good. It was.

The main issue for me in this shifter story (dragon & cat) was that I didn’t feel the heat between the MC’s. I was told a bunch of history between the two before anything started with them & it started from chapter one.

This is my second Louisa Masters book & I hoped for better since the first I read was also ho-hum in the chemistry department.

I’m not sure I’ll return to her even with a stellar narrator such as Joel Leslie.

Hidden Species is one of my favorite series so I was super excited for this spin off! And while I still loved Masters wit and characters, I just felt without the semi suspenseful subplot that it just was a little too focused on the humor and not enough happened. I’ll definitely continue the series, but maybe adjust my expectations a little as it seems this series is going to be a lot more fluffy

It’s me, not the book. Or is it?

Hear me out. I’ve been bingeing the Hidden Species series for a bit, mainly because I needed something to keep my ears and mind busy while I’ve been pottering around in the house. And the audios are still included in my Audible subscription, so I’ve picked them up - can’t go wrong with freebies, right?

And I liked those books well enough, I’ve always loved the idea of an entire supernatural universe right under our (unsuspecting, human) noses. And I liked the action plot about the “we need to save our species (and humanity) that’s threatened by Dr. Evil and his mignons”.

This spinoff is… nice. But not exciting at all. I’ve so been looking forward to Percy’s story - Percy, who served as The Lucifer for a very long time, a composed, calm, badass cat shifter. And Brandt, the Wing Leader of the Dragons? Perrrrrfect pairing, right?

Only it’s not. Turns out, Percy’s only adventurous side is, that he’s occasionally wearing lacy underwear. He’s too much of a coward to stand up to his overbearing father, who wants him to return to his family and be influential or whatever. For the most part, he behaves like an awkward twenty something who’s barely had any experience, sexual or relationship wise.

And there’s Brandt. Sigh. So much wasted potential there. I get it, dragons are supposed to be silly and playful. But really? A many millennia old frat boy, living in some kind of shared house with other frat boys?

There’s no drama. No plot. Just them having sex like horny teens. The only thing I enjoyed was the banter, and the cameos from previous characters.

Maybe it’s time to leave fae, dragons and shifters behind again for a while. Even free audios don’t tempt me enough to pick up another book from this series right now 🤷‍♀️

“My eyes are up here, Percy.”
Dragging my gaze away from his abs, I look at his face. “And they’re very pretty, but what makes you think I’m with you for your eyes?”

As Comet Halley, once in awhile I like to read stories with no angst at all. It’s rare, but it happens. So, when I received this ARC I was really excited to read it after suffering with a few dark books. And I don’t regret it, I really enjoyed the start of this spin-off. If you like books with zero drama, focus on the MCs and with silly characters you’re going to love this.

description

Like I said before this is the first book of a spin-off from the Hidden Species Series, but it can be read perfectly as a standalone. Percy and Brandt already know each other but nothing happened between them before. That changes in this book, the plot circled around their relationship and the introduction to the dragons that live under Brandt’s roof. With all their peculiarities. It also explored Percy’s fears to become his father and the uncertainty of his future.

A cat trying to avoid leadership. A dragon in charge of his people. A cute story to start this series.

“There, there. I still think you’re a mighty leader. Have more grapes.”

This was FANTASTIC. I kept highlighting parts that made me giggle and sending them to my friends. We get to see a whole different side of Percy than we have before, including some embarrassing moments that he will never hear the end of. Brandt is a perfect match for him, and I loved their dynamic. The epilogue made me shed happy tears. I can’t wait for the next book!

All I can add is that the book bored me to tears.

Sorry, LM, I love your Hidden Species - even if they tend to be heavier on empty banter than action, at least it's funny, - but this one was a no-go for me from the start.

I have wanted Percy's story from the moment we met him. But I was afraid as the main MC's story usually means that that is the end of the series. Not this time, its actually the beginning of the spin-off. I was so excited to read this. We knew that his mate was going to be Brandt, cause you could see the sparks fly between them when they met while helping the dragons & elves relocate to earth after all of the evilness in Hidden Species Series. While I don't really think you have to read that series before starting this one, I feel that you would get a better understanding who these characters are and it makes for a fuller reading experience. Plus it's a really awesome series. Percy was the former Lucifer, and not in the fire & brimstone way. He was the leader of the Community of Species Government. In the final book of the prior series, there was a transfer of power & now Percy is free to do what he wants. Except he doesn't know what he wants to do. Brandt is the wing leader of the dragons & just a free spirit. All of the dragons are so cool & just fun loving beings. Percy goes on a walk about & is currently in Western Australia. One evening, a young dragon crashes into his shed, unbeknownst to his parents, he decided to sneak out & go flying. Well with all the things the dragons went through previously, Brandt is called in from the states to help with the search for the missing dragon. When Brandt & Percy see each other again, sparks are still flying between them. We then have Percy coming to a decision to take the chance with Brandt. I loved watching the dragons in the compound interacting with Percy, especially the young. Percy finally comes to realize, with some help from David & the gang, that he is the happiest when he is helping others. He has a very nurturing soul. His father was a real tool & I am glad we don't get a lot of page time with him. Percy & Brandt make such a sweet couple. I can't wait to see where this spin-off takes us. There are so many possibilities.

Set a few years after the Hidden Species series, we finally get a happily ever after for Percy.
Not longer the Lucifer, Percy is a bit adrift. He's reunited with Brandt the Dragon Wing Leader and finally does something about that crush.
I'm so glad we are getting dragon stories. The way they've been written is fascinating and I love that they are almost as silly as Hellhounds but not too crazy.
Plenty of laughs, lighter on the steam than some of the Hidden Species books, (makes sense though) and low on drama. Loved it

I don't think it comes as a surprise to anyone that I loved this book. I loved the Hidden species series so much, I couldn't stop gushing about those books and this spin off series is starting out just as great. It's hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. I was so glad seeing Percy come out of his shell in this book. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I love this audiobook just because Percy gets his HEA. After working so hard as the lucifer, he deserved it.

But nothing will ever beat the naked dragon rides.
____________________________________________________________

Audiobook review - I got this book from #DragonEverAfter #NetGalley

This audio bumped my review up to 5 stars. Hearing Joel Leslie read the Percy monologue of riding the naked dragon was everything. Also hearing Brandt pout and Dustin whine made the story more immersive.

The love story between Percy and Brandt was really sweet and believable. And the dragon way of making babies was cute as pie.

I am still upset about the time jump and epilogue.

I loved it...

This one was almost as good as the first one. I always loved Percy, and Brandt was goofy. This had no angst, no drama, and no fighting, which was great. But it did unfortunately have a freaking 3 year jump in the beginning of story and a 5 year epilogue.

Having 8 years go by but nothing really changes in this world?

Yes, I saw that this was actually a spin-off from another series by this author. But seeing that it was the first book to start off a new series I figured it would still be fine to be read as a standalone. I was wrong. And I'll say that's on me. There was pretty much no world building and instead I got dropped into a world I knew nothing about. Again, I'll say that's one me, but I did think there should have at least been some detail given about the world. Even to just reacclimate people back into it from the last series. We didn't even get an explanation on what Percy's title was/used to be. It was mentioned a lot that he used to be the "Lucifer" so many times but other than pointing out that it was a political title and not a religious one I never got an answer on what that actually meant.

Aside from being confused at parts, which I tried to move past, I also couldn't really get into the characters much. Their relationship/lust for one another moved really fast and made it hard to see a true connection between them. So overall, I just don't think this world or series is for me.

This was a sweet, fast-paced and enjoyable read - the world building is especially interesting. I do feel I may have enjoyed more if I'd read the series this is spun off from, as there is such a large cast who are wonderful.

Sadly due to not having a connection to the characters from previous though, i don't think some sort shit as much as they might habe. Also I wish their had been more focus on developing Brandt & Percy romance, as it seemed focused on lust/crush from the past.

There wasn't a lot of getting to know one another, they have sex and start a relationship instantly. While they're cute together, they obviously have chemistry I'd have loved more moments of them alone together. As so often they're interrupted or others around, which while comedic at times it did get repetitive.

It felt like at times there was a lot of telling and not showing on the page, so didn't feel the romance as much for me. Still I did enjoy the found family vibes, with all the different species and relationships was lovely.

The tea trials, Stefan's conspiracy theories, Dustin's crush and all of the gossip were great fun. I liked the glimpses into the characters for the rest of the series, not sure yet it will continue but they were lovely to meet in this one.

Overall it was entertaining and a quick read, with plenty of fluffy feel good scenes and humour. Leading to a happy ending for Brandy & Percy 💜

There was no sense of agency. No villains to bring to justice. This is what happens as a story continues past its climatic action driven ending..

Its been three years after the dragons moved to earth. Our former Lucifer is finding his place in life. By spending time alone gathering new skills and memories. Until a dragon crashes into the shed of his current rental.

I wasn't going to read this series. Until perusing the comments. The common thread are about a pair of red panties. So in order to have a frame of reference. Off to the internet for men's fashion. Oh la la! What a wealth of information, styles and cuts. Funny! The material is the same. The cut is based on body type. Like all clothing!

Shoot everyone wore robes and dresses, backin ancient times. The best way to keep the body cool, while providing sun protection. Pants were invented and used in wintery environments.

I guess not knowing anything about his personal life. Was a shock to the system for most. You'd be even more shocked, once you read. So much more world building. Getting a greater understanding of the magic system. I'm glad for the contrary comments. They drove me to see for myself. I was well entertained!
