Twisted Mind

Rate this book
Born at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse to the head of the CDC and the leader of the new world, Jackson Star has always known that he would one day rule. Only the Stars’ plans go much deeper than simply keeping humanity alive, and the evil that sleeps inside Jackson is darker than even his father knows. Everyone in the settlement is a puppet, and everyone has a purpose in the Stars’ master plan, starting with Megan James.

But as Jackson and his father creep closer to achieving their goals at the CDC, things slowly begin to unravel. Meg isn’t cooperating the way she should be, and the presence of a new person in her life is threatening to blow their plan apart. Jackson must now decide how to deal with the girl he has spent the last nine years trying to manipulate, as well as the family she has left and the man who has taken up residence in her life. To complicate matters even more, the darkness inside Jackson has gotten increasingly persistent, making it difficult for him to control it at times and leading him to wonder if he shouldn’t just give in to his urges once and for all.

Twisted Mind is a dark and disturbing look into Jackson’s brain, and the inner-workings of the CDC. It will give readers a glimpse of the future, as well as answer questions that have plagued us from the very beginning of the Broken World series.

I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

This was a great chance to see things from a completely different perspective. This is a novella-length story that really does need to be read after Twisted World since the events in this story take place at the same time. In this story, we see things from Jackson's point of view. I was pretty sure that I didn't like Jackson before I started this book but now I am absolutely certain that this is not a nice guy. It was really kind of fun to see just exactly how this guy mind really works. I had a good time with this story.

Jackson Star was born at the start of the zombie apocalypse and he is roughly the same age as Megan. Jackson's father is the man in charge of the settlement that they live in. He doesn't know what it is like to not be in power. They live in a big house while others live in shacks. Jackson, along with his father, has a plan and that plan involves Megan James.

Jackson was even worse than I thought he would be and I thought he was pretty bad. He really does have an evil mind and I was at times amazed by just how far he would be willing to go. I thought he was selfish and uncaring but learned that he actually enjoys seeing others in pain. He likes to make others suffer and he is completely unable to empathize on any level.

This story was very eye-opening. It was really interesting to see things happening that I couldn't even imagine. I liked that certain parts of this story mirrored Twisted World but though a warped lens. I thought I knew what happened but I didn't know everything. I love the fact that even though I knew a lot of the events that would happen in this story, everything still felt very fresh because the perspective was so different.

I thought that Heather Firth did a great job with this story. I like that she speaks very clearly and I think she does a great job with the character voices. I thought that she had a very pleasant voice and I had no trouble listening to this story for hours at a time.

I would recommend this series to others. I love the world that Kate L. Mary has created and the characters almost feel like family. I cannot wait to read more in this series!

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author.

Initial Thoughts
This was an interesting point of view. This novella takes place at the same time as the first book in the series, Twisted World. Everything is presented from Jackson Star's point of view and as much as I thought I didn't like him before, this novella left no doubts. Jackson Star is not a nice guy. The story did answer a few questions and let me see another side of things to really give a clear picture of what is going on in this world. I thought that the narration was well done as well.

This is a most interesting 'side story' novella, showing inside the mind of one of the secondary but very important characters from Twisted World, the first book in the offshot series from Kate Mary's wonderful Broken World series. In this, we see that Jackson Star, son of the boss of post-zombie-apocalyptic New Atlanta, has hidden depths....

I'd advise reminding yourself exactly what happened in Twisted World before reading this - I read TW months ago, so had forgotten most of it. It came back when I was reading this, but I think it would be best read as soon after reading TW as possible, for best effect. Anyway, the book. Yes, I think it could do with another draft to tighten it up, and in parts it seems a bit rushed, but a third of the way in I no longer cared. Kate Mary's strength is that she makes you care what happens to her characters, and I was gutted for Axl and Joshua all over again. She's a truly excellent writer and I remain a staunch fan (I think this must be about the 12th book of hers that I've reviewed - says it all!).

Wow! I don’t even know where to begin with this review. Twisted Mind takes us deep inside of a very disturbed young man, Jackson Star. Jackson is the son of the man who is the head of the CDC and I guess you could say the head of New Atlanta or more like the king or ruler. I think Star has more control of New Atlanta than anyone knows.

Jackson is a very, very evil-minded person. The things that went through his head. The things he wanted to do. The things he did do. The things that made him what would I say, happy to be watching/seeing. Jackson likes to hurt people, hurt them real bad. He likes to punish them. He likes to torture them in unimaginable ways. I think he is only happy when he is dishing out pain to someone or watching someone who is in pain.

But I don’t think the apple falls far from the tree as they say. I wonder what goes through his dad Garrett Star’s mind as he is the one who raised Jackson and taught him everything he knows.

Garrett Star the head of the CDC and the leader of New Atlanta has been teaching Jackson what he needs to know since before the zombie apocalypse. What is truly going on inside the walls of the CDC? Are they trying to save the world? Or are they trying to control the world?

I love this series, the Broken World and Twisted so very much. I can’t seem to get enough of it. I want it to go on and on never to end. I love all the characters. Each book just throws more and more curves at you leaving hanging on wanting more and more. It leaves you with all kinds of questions while at the same time answering so many.

The characters are all such amazing people. You feel as if you have known them all your life. They are the kind of people you want to help. The kind of people you want as your best friend. Well, there are a few like Jackson and his dad that you don’t want to be friends with. But they may be the kind of enemy you want to keep close so you know where they are. You know the kind of enemy you shouldn’t turn your back on.

I am anxiously awaiting Kate L. Mary’s next book. Hopefully, it will be a zombie book set in this world but if not I am still looking forward to the next book no matter what is.

I would recommend Twisted Mind to all those zombie apocalyptic fans out there. One-click your copy of Twisted Mind today to step inside the mind of an evil person. I can’t recommend both the Broken World series and the Twisted series enough.

Listened to this with Audible, and the narrator did awesome as always! This is the 3rd book I've listened to with the same narrator, and she always does a great job!

Twisted Mind is Jackson's demented POV. I think you should definitely read Twisted World first. The writing is still great, but I didn't really care about Jackson's POV because I already knew how sick in the head he is, so this was nothing new. This book gives us a different look at some of the scenes in Twisted World, so there really isn't any new content that I felt necessary. This book just confirmed all the thoughts I had from reading Twisted World. Jackson and his dad are despicable people, and Twisted Mind shows us how much. Jackson gets off on blood and violence. The way he thinks about women is disgusting. I didn't listen to the sex scene because I just didn't want anything to do with it. Meg was definitely blind to how depraved Jackson is. Jackson is one step away from un-hinged. I know he grew up with his horrible father as an influence, but it really seems that Jackson would've been bad no matter what. I hope he gets knocked down; maybe become zombie chow. I'm ready to read that! Looks like it won't be the next book, so I'm sad. The next book is sort of a prequel, which I hopefully will enjoy, but I really just want the story to continue!

This is basically a long summary of the first book from Jackson's point of view. The reader gets to spend some time in Jackson's mind and see how things looked from his point of view. They get to find out just how he was able to come across the info he'd come across through the story.

It's always nice to see a story from another point of view. More authors should do things like this now and then. I was curious about how Jackson was finding out the things he was finding out through the first book. This book sheds light on that. This book also sheds light on how dark Jackson really was. He was very twisted and terrifying. I don't know how I'd of liked being around someone like him.

Can't say I really disliked anything about this book. If I hadn't liked the series before, I definitely do now. This book gave the story an even darker edge than it originally had, and that says a lot. The story was pretty dark on its own without realizing just how twisted Jackson was.

I definitely recommend this book. I recommend the first book as well. Even though I haven't read the other books yet, I fully recommend them as well. I'm very convinced that I'm going to be as in love with those books as I have been with these two.

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I chose to listen to this novella before listening to the first two novels, and I think I’m glad I did. I was able to understand what was going on even though I haven’t listened to the first book. It also has me anxious to start listening to book no. 1.

Jackson is the main character in Twisted Mind and that’s the perfect title for the novella. The man is twisted and evil. The fact that he and his father run the CDC makes things even worse.

Jackson hates Meg’s family. He’s caused so much pain for Meg although she doesn’t know it, and he plans on becoming even closer to her so that he can manipulate her and ultimately destroy her. But there’s a new man in Meg’s life…will Jackson’s plans have to be changed?

Although families have made it through the zombie apocalypse, they have to deal with Jackson Star and his father and their evil intentions. I can’t wait to read the first two novels in the series and get to know the other characters better. I know plenty about Jackson now! I also have a question or two that I’m sure will be answered in the first book.

This novella is book 1.5 and should be read after book 1. This fills in the gaps with Jackson’s perspective, reactions, and behaviors to situations pertaining to Meg’s character.
This novella shows a side of Jackson you might not have seen in book 1. Jackson is a powerful, devious, and twisted character. He has been conditioned from the moment he entered into the new world by a man just as dangerous. He’s part of an internship program designed to train and develop the twisted mind where humans live in a settlement behind protected walls. The regulator was unaware of the power he was instilling in this young man.
Jackson is sinister and this short book illustrates examples of his dark desires.

Narrated by Heather Firth. Heather is the voice of all characters. She has a nice tone to her voice. Her vocal style matched the female character roles. Heather’s voice is appropriate casted to portray the female characters. However, Heather’s voice doesn’t portray the male character voices with that deep ember that a man can. Dual narration would be preferable.

There were some moments of silence in the audio almost like the edits didn’t overlap properly leaving gaps of silence.

I received this book via a promo code and this is my voluntary review. This is a side story of the Twisted World series and it doesn't lack for impact, you get the sense from Meg's POV in book one that Jackson is one twisted dude, actually spending time living in his head though, really hits home the danger that Team James are in. He's insane, sadistic and even worse than his father. Jackson is completely irredeemable, and an utter sociopath who has played Meg since the beginning like a fiddle. The mental manipulation he's been doing and his desire to get hold of her cousin Charley is terrifying! I do sort of wish that although Heather Firth has been amazing narrating this story, that a male voice artist had done the role of Jackson, just to help differentiate his character more from Donaghy. I did skip some scenes that were just too much for me listen to- his version of sex for example.. too much! I consider this novella essential listening after Twisted World.. and if you havent read twisted world, turn around, and go get it!

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.
Most of this is similar events that happened in book 1 but it is from Jackson's point of view. I think this is a great in between novel because it really helps us understand the calculated actions of the CDC. It helps us gain perspective of how awful of a person Jackson is and just really helps definitively answer what is really going on behind the scenes that are eluded to in book 1 but that aren't entirely spelled out. Great in between novella.

As with book 1, I am still incredibly impressed with Heather Firth's talent as an up and coming narrator and especially with the difference in her voice from other performances. I feel like she did a great job personifying Jackson in this novella and was able to capture his twisted personality.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Twisted Mind (A Broken World Novella) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Heather Firth, is a look into Jackson’s deranged mind. The events take place in Twisted World: A Broken World Novel (Twisted, Book #1) but from Jackson’s point of view. This novella did not disappoint. If you enjoyed Twisted World, you MUST listen to this. I listened in one sitting so good luck putting it down once you start.

Usually novella’s aren’t my thing, but this one was impressive. If you are ever wondering what a psychopath thinks, listen to this and you’ll know.

The narrator, Heather Firth, did an incredible job once again.

I recommend and can’t praise this series enough for the dark, twisted entertainment it is.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is for the adults who can handle the dark side of things. If you do not fit this, stay clear.

Disclaimer.
I had requested and received audible version of this book for free from the author, in exchange for an unbiased review.

What I liked about the book -
This turned out to be a surprisingly good novella. I typically find "in-between" novellas of a series to be mostly meh. But this one was an exception. The story is actually interesting, telling the story of the survivors from a different point of view. With a runtime of ~3 and half hour, it was a quick listen too. The story moved at a comfortable pace and kept me entertained.

What I disliked about the book -
none.

Narration -
Narration by Heather Firth was perfect match for the story. All the emotions were so very well conveyed.

Twisted Mind was one total mind blowing experience I didn't know I needed!

Mary riveted me to my kindle with this novella. I did not want to read Jackson's view point at all. I have to say though, it was an exceptional read. To fee his anger, his hate and even his primal need to kill was an interesting new take on this series. Mary further established the horrors of the CDC while also giving you new perspective on our band of survivors.

Twisted Mind was absolutely worth the read. I highly recommend that you don't skip this one while reading this series.

Very good

I thought I wouldn't like this novella so I was surprised when I did. Seeing Jackson's madness and knowing his part in the story was pretty interesting. Of course he's a despicable person though and I hope a Zombie gets him and his father and the other shameful doctors who have turned their backs on their oath to do no harm. Now my question is: When is the next book coming out? Can't wait to see the Stars have a reckoning.

Chillingly Terrifying insight into the mind of a manipulative horrific sadistic monster. This is written from Jacksons POV and slots in round the storyline from book 1.
This novella definately needs to be read after 'Twisted World: A Broken World Novel' otherwise it might be a bit confusing!!
Stunning writting as always. Im looking forward to see where the story goes. Warning it is a cliffhanger!!

Twisted Mind: A Broken World Novella was a good quick read by Kate L. Mary. Jackson has always wanted to rule the new world. He and his father don't want to keep humanity alive. Jackson has a really dark evil inside him. As Jackson's plans start to happen, things start to unravel. His plan for Meg isn't working because she isn't cooperating. This was a good look into Jackson's disturbing brain. I can't wait to read more by the author.

A Fitting Conclusion! This book is from Jackson Star's point of view, and definately not for the faint of heart. I don't know how Jackson was able to hide his true nature from Meg for so long, he does make a very sinister villain, and she does seem surprisingly naive! I was on the edge of my seat, desperately hoping for Donaghy to survive Jackson's plans, and for the James family to get away unscathed! I really enjoyed this book, it was very dark, intense and full of suspense.

Jackson Star is crazy. I thought his father was bad but Jackson is a lot worse.

This is a short novella from Jacksons POV it was great to get inside his head and see what he was thinking and Know we can understand him a bit better but I have to say I really don't like him. he is pure evil.

I enjoyed this one on to the next.

This novella is an excellent lol into the psychotic mind of Jackson. His delusional attraction to power and how his crazy mind was a development of his own father's genius but crazy mind.
