Ghost in Training: Book 1 Nearly Departed series

By Teri Petzold

A new twist on the ghost story!

We get introduced to Ghostland, a ghost with unfinished business doesn't have to wander aimlessly, you can have a purpose with training to get you ready to help the living!  We meet Ron in this story, he is looking for redemption but realizing that even afterlife has its own share of complications.  Ron is determined to be a success at his first mission but his mentor Gayle might be too pushy with her advice and guidance while Ron is still walking the afterlife line of his past and present.  Nick and Claire are wonderful characters and this book has all the feels!

I think the idea for this book is so creative, such a unique twist on the classic ghost story that I have never read before.  The descriptions of Ghostland are very detailed and I could see a vivid view of it in my mind.  The character interactions between Ron and Gayle was fun and witty, I really enjoyed getting to know them.  The story feels grounded with the introduction of Nick and Claire, Claire is very sweet and innocent but her sadness is heavy and genuine 😢  This book is a great read for any reader regardless of age, the writing is incredible and a terrific start to a new series!

Ghost In Training is such a delightful start to a series. Ron is new to the whole thing, stumbling through what it means to be on the other side, and that made him instantly endearing. I loved how the story brought humor and charm to a subject that could have been dark. Instead, it felt lighthearted and fun, with just the right touch of quirkiness.

The pacing was easy to follow, and the characters were written with warmth. I especially enjoyed how Ron’s personality shines through, even though he’s no longer alive—he’s relatable and funny, and you can’t help but cheer for him.

This book made me smile and left me curious about what’s coming next in the series. It’s one of those stories that you finish and immediately want to keep going with. Five stars.

A Delightful Read

From the title I wasn't certain what to expect. However, this rom-com with shades of "Casper-esque" whimsy delighted me.
The tale of two ghosts, one a young girl and the other a boy is a sure pleaser for those seeking a light read.
I highly recommend this one.

It’s both quirky and deeply moving.

Underlying the laughs is a poignant message about unfinished business. And not just in the literal sense! Ron’s journey highlights how every life, even in death, can still bring hope and change.

A fresh look at the afterlife with equal parts of wit and warmth!

This book was funny and refreshingly original! This is not your usual ghost story but a touching and surprisingly uplifting tale about redemption, compassion, and what it really means to move on. Highly recommend!

A fun diversion!

This was fun. A definitely new twist on ghost stories, and something any aged person can read. I like the characters and the story. It had surprises, not something I could anticipate in the ghost characters. As I said before, fun!
