An intriguing concept (a newly elected senator accused of murder) separates this from a normal mystery-thriller. Another twist is that the detective investigating the crime is a trans-sexual female.
The pace is quick, writing is crisp, dialogue realistic, and characters are distinctive. Throw in the subplots of a budding romance, a possible forgery of a famous painting, and the double dealings of Henri Hawke—a man who gets things done for the right price— and you’ve got a winner.
