★★★★★ Another must read thriller by Jones. Beautifully crafted into a warped and gripping story that I didn't want to end.
★★★★★ Unravelling is a standalone novel that will shake you to the core.
A gripping tale of betrayal and brutal revenge. Sergeant Ernie Metcalfe is a family man, changed by his experiences in Afghanistan. He has a wife, Naomi and three beautiful daughters, aged 7, 8 and 10. When he finds out his wife is having an affair with a fellow officer, his mind begins to unravel. His life begins to spiral out of his control and he can't allow that to happen. Detective Inspector Alan Williams and his team are already struggling to cope with a series of attacks on a group of men accused of historical abuse. The attacks appear to be connected to a recent case but all is not what it seems. Damaged minds are dangerous and revenge can be brutal.
★★★★★ What an edition to the series! One of the best series you will read..If you like gripping and violent, the Anglesey books will enthrall you.
★★★★★ One word for this. Outstanding!
★★★★★ A powerful and gritty read, not for the faint hearted. This author will drag you into the story and rattle your very being until the last page.

In a Conrad Jones story I nearly always have trouble separating the good guys from the bad. His characters are never black or white, just varying shades of grey. Vigilante justice, orchestrated by the Catholic Church, and a deranged RAF sergeant engaging in a murderous rampage, as an act of perceived revenge. These twin plots were both horrifying and fascinating, in equal measure.
This is the first of Conrad's books I have read, mostly due to my insane TBR mountain. The cover of this one really intrigued me though. There are 2 concurrent storylines. Firstly is two twin boys witnessing the murder of men, being chucked alive into a fire pit. This leads investigations down the path of historic sex abuse and pedophilia within the church and vigilante justice for those who escaped the first time. The second storyline follows two army officers caught having an affair. The husband who catches them out also wants justice. As you read you follow the descent into madness but also the genius bringing down of anyone else involved. I've seen some say the end is disappointing, but I think it is genius. You may feel sorry for the victim until his past is uncovered and whether he I guilty or not of what he's been accused of doesn't mean he's by any means innocent. The author leaves it in your capable hands to decide whether justice has been done, and I imagine opinions will differ greatly. Overall this was a brilliant read, neither story let up at any point. The undercurrent of tension was always present and created the must read more urge. The subtlety of the tension rather than out and out was brilliantly done.
Ernie Metcalfe is an ex army vet , with two tours of Afghanistan behind him , he is now with The RAF Police, but the memories and the things he saw are always there at the back of his mind ..When Metcalfe finds out his wife Naomi, who he has been married to for over 20 years , and is the mother of their 3 girls, aged 10 , 8 , and 7 is having an affair, his life like a tapestry comes apart stitch by stitch ...Ten year old twin boys , Philip and Tom Trigg are out crabbing, when on the way home they witness something no child should ever see , and when Sergeant's Bob Dewhurst and April Byfelt question the boys and follow up ..it will be a case that leads DI Alan Williams and his DS Kim Davies right into the heart of darkness ...Murdered priests, a dark and shady backstory ...And a quench for revenge so deep ...Rage , white hot , with a pulse that burns ...I tore through this in one sitting ...A Dangerous mind can be a really terrifying thing ...Conrad Jones is one of the masters of Dark Storytelling...Dark Chilling and Brilliant ...
Was a good dark read but was a bit annoyed that the whereabouts of Hal was at the time of the killings no CCtv checked even when Ernie went to the cafe and stole things from Hals wife's bag !!Do hope there is a follow up to this pls.And Ernie gets his sentence !!
There are two stories running parallel to each other in Conrad Jones’s “Unravelling.” And parallel they remain, since there seems no way in which they are connected with each other. The main story is about how a traumatic event can unravel a person’s whole life and personality. This part of the story is what gives the book 3 Stars. The other story side-by-side is about the pedophiles in places of religion, and a group of vigilantes who are bent on destroying such priests and getting the justice that the law hasn’t given the victims. This part is mind-numbingly boring and like a jack-in-the-box popping up for no reason.
This was a strange story and I am not sure if I really enjoyed it that much.I found the plot a bit disturbing and while I do hate paedophilia I not sure I want to read about it. There were top many innocent people being killed for no apparent reason. I don't read Lee Child books either for the reason there is too much gratuitous violence.
I've read and loved all the books by Conrad Jones, they are all brilliant and I am loving this new series. Hope in the next book Ernie gets found out, as what he's done to get revenge is beyond evil, and going by the ending it looks like there is more to come. Can't wait till the next book.
I have read all of the Anglesey Mysteries all the books are brilliant full of horror, intrigue, with a lot of good policing . I really love this author all his books are amazing
Love this authors writing style. This series has serious issues that draw you in. The characters are great and I love how he pops humour in with them. I love a book that has smiley moments ! Look forward to the next in the series.
Immersive characters and storyline which keeps the reader turning the pages. Plot development is good as are the twists. I will definitely be back for more....
Well you can't get better than this! Superb storytelling. Once the Conrad Jones bug bites you in the bum there is no cure. Addictive reads that have you begging for more. Just had my fix with this one. It's disturbing, gritty, brutal and totally absorbing. A devilishly good book.
Hey to read a bad book from conrad . Some of his books have made lockdown bearable looking forward to the next Anglesey series .Is there any more Tank books in the pipeline conrad ?
The title is a perfect description of what happens to Ernie in this book. Excellent descriptions of locations and supreme writing as ever from Conrad Jones. As with previous books this one leaves one with the worry feeling it could just be true.
I enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed a lot of his other ones. It was a good story, it kept me turning the pages, I was just a bit disappointed with the end.
