King Family #1

My Cone and Only

Rate this book
Wyatt King isn’t looking for love…because he’s already found it.

Too bad she’s off-limits. He’s not going to be the jerk who messes around with his best friend’s little sister, so he keeps his feelings bottled up and settles for acting as her protector instead.

Andie Lockhart’s dreamed of kissing Wyatt for as long as she’s known what kissing is. But since he’s dated nearly every woman in town but her, she’s long since accepted he’ll never see her as anything more than his best friend’s tomboy little sister.

When a real estate developer threatens the beloved old house Andie inherited from her grandmother, her white knight Wyatt swoops in with his handyman skills to save the day. But the more time they spend working on the house together, the harder it becomes to ignore their irresistible attraction.

Until the night an accidental kiss blows the lid off those feelings they’ve both kept buried.

After that, things between them get a lot hotter—and a lot more complicated. Forbidden love, broken promises, family secrets, and jealousy all threaten to tear them apart. If he intends to hold on to the woman he loves, Wyatt will have to put everything on the line.

My Cone and Only is book #1 in the King Family series set in the small town of Crowder, Texas, home of the King’s Creamery ice company. Each book is a standalone, full-length novel that follows one of the six King siblings as they find and fight for love.

If your previous reads by Susannah Nix were her PG-13ish "Chemistry Lessons" series then get ready for total panty incineration! *panting like a dog*

MY CONE AND ONLY is a Friends-to-Lovers, Brother's Best Friend, Small Town, story that is perfectly sweet, swoony, and steamy!

Wyatt is the cocky, smooth, bad boy that you will want to reform. And Andie is a hardworking, strong, sweet, badass. I loved her so much! Wyatt and Andie have INNNNNSANE chemistry! From the first chapter you will be foaming at the mouth for these two to get nasty. And, when they do, prepare yourself for serious steam!

I loved this story so much! There are meaningful friendships, complex family relationships, sweet moments, an old family mystery, plenty of laughs, and lots of swoon!

This is the perfect Summer read to fall in love with!

It is Friday. I am getting ready to catch up with my reading this weekend. Just wanting to unwind and relax.

My Cone and Only is surprisingly good. The plot and the characters are bit cheesy and the conversation needs more work/ edited better. Overall, it is a sweet cheesy story. The plot is decent.
Miss Nix done a good job taking her readers into Wyatt and Andie's story.

The only reason why I read this is because I've had the second book in the series on my tbr for about half a year, and I don't like to start a series in the middle without knowing what happened previously.

This was so meh, nothing interesting happened the whole time, I didn't like or care about any of the characters, and there was a surprising lack of ice cream?

Wyatt was extremely unlikeable, not only does he drink, get drunk and puke a few times during the book, but he also smokes weed, doesn't take care of himself or his house, and he sleeps with women, discarding them like the junk around his apartment when he's done with them.

AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE CUTE??

Ignoring the slob and...sexual escapades aspect of this, I cannot stand the smell of alcohol or weed. Weed in particular makes me extremely nauseous.

There's a scene where Andie cleans up his apartment and I could just imagine the stench coming off of not just Wyatt, but his whole place too. THIS IS NOT ROMANTIC TO ME, I'M SORRY.

Andie...whatever. She was just there, with her bad taste in men. WHICH REMINDS ME, Wyatt alluded to himself being a bad boy once and...sir, you are not a bad boy, just a mess.

Maybe the second one will pull through, but after this I don't have high hopes.

4.5 stars.

Wyatt and Andie have been secretly in love with each other since they were teenagers. Andie never made a move because Wyatt was always flirting with everyone but her, but Wyatt never made a move because he knew that Andie’s brother would “kill him.” A bit of a jam.

One day they “accidentally” kiss, and from then on, they are unstoppable 😏. The only problem is Josh, the self-appointed gatekeeper of Andie’s panties.

A sex-police brother is always a risk with the brother’s-best-friend trope, and it’s always creepy and gives me the ick. So I kinda hated Josh for this, but I also looooved that they were sneaking around like Monica and Chandler 🤭.

Also, I loved Wyatt and Andie so much, and I was rooting for them so much that I didn’t allow the meddling brother to ruin my fun.
They had such amazing chemistry, and there was so much absolutely delicious mutual pining that I didn’t care about anything else.

Wyatt had slept with half the town before getting together with Andie, and I know it might put off some readers, but I didn’t care. They were so cute together, I had absolutely no doubt about their HEA.

While Wyatt might not be my type irl, his older brother Tanner absolutely would be, so, onto Tanner’s book! 🥰

I'll admit I picked this one because of the cover. I thought it was cute and I was looking for a light, easy romance to lose myself in before the holiday rush. This wasn't it. I will never understand the draw some women have for complete losers. Granted 1) it's a small town, 2) she's known him forever, 3) he's good looking but he also has no job, can't keep his place clean, sleeps with anything that moves and has no ambition. Why are so many women attracted to this?!!! It's a complete turnoff and made it difficult to read this book especially since Andie seemed to have her life together for the most part. I didn't make it through this one and I'm totally OK with that.

Andie Lockhart is shocked when she receives a notice from the city that she may lose the house her grandmother left to her, all because of some repairs that have accrued some larger-than-life HOA fees. So she enlists her brother’s best friend, Wyatt King, who also happens to be a handyman, to help save her house.

Wyatt is the complete opposite of Andie in many ways and to most people, he seems like a womanizer with zero ambition. But Andie has always had a crush on Wyatt, ever since they were kids. She thought Wyatt didn’t feel the same, but when in reality, he never acted on anything because of a promise to her brother. When they finally give in to their romantic feelings, Andie & Wyatt keep their relationship a secret, but secrets can’t stay hidden forever and they’ll have to decide if what they have is worth risking Wyatt & Josh’s friendship.

My Cone and Only by Susannah Nix is book 1 in the King Family series. This was a cute & steamy brother’s best friend romance with a lot of small town charm. Don’t let this cover fool you—this romance heats up quick! I liked Andie & Wyatt’s romance a lot, so you’re probably wondering why I didn’t rate it higher. It’s clear this book is a spin-off of another series, which I didn’t read, so there is heaps of side characters and tons of side plots that truly took away from the central romance. If that was toned down a bit, I would’ve enjoyed this more. 3.5/5 stars.

Such a sweet romance read! I loved this friends-to-lover/brother’s best friend trope.

The relationship between Wyatt and Andie was very well written and there was just the right amount of steam and drama. I also love the play on words with the title.

This is the first book I’ve read by the author and I’m excited to pick up her previous and her next one!

Sorry to the author but I have no respect for a 30 something dude who doesn’t have a stable job, lives in a complete pigsty, doesnt have clean laundry and has no direction about his life. The H is whiny for like almost the entire first half of the book and oh he tried to defend h’s honor but instead got his ass beat😂

The dude is a part time contractor but doesn’t want to take more shifts because what if that’s his life? He writes songs on the side but is too scared to tell his “band mates”.

“I loved the guy, but he wasn’t exactly a shining pinnacle of punctuality and reliability.”
~ imagine your love interest describing you like this??

Sure the spicy scenes were great but c’mon.. this being a brothers best friend trope was laughable because honestly if it were me even I wouldn’t want my sibling to date this train wreck of a man. Let’s not forget that he was a womanizer who slept with everyone in sight to forget that he was in love with the h.
Mister could barely make rent and was hungover 2 times in a single week so forget my sister, even a mild acquaintance of mine would get a warning to tread carefully with this dude.

I feel like I need therapy after this book.

Recap cause otherwise I will forget:

Wyatt is a swing dancing, song writing, lead singer/ handyman. If that isn't enough he's also devilishly good looking (so much so that he is the town rake) the heir to a fortune and a bit of a local celebrity.

Andie has a house that she inherited from her grandmother (?) She has spent years fixing it up only to have some dirty real estate developers try and take it from her by putting a lien on the house for some hoa fines of which she was never notified.

Enter Wyatt who has had feeling for Andie since HS but cannot act on them because he promised his best friend who also happens to be her brother.
She has also had feelings for him, but thinks he only thinks of her as family.

A little forced proximity cause he is fixing up her house and suddenly they can't keep their hands off each other.

They end up dating in secret for a while which was an immediate no for me, but Andie goes along with it, til she can't take it anymore, but when she asks Wyatt to go public he refuses.

It was almost like he loved the best friend more than Andie. But don't worry there is a grand gesture in the nick of time.

There weren't too many spicy scenes but what there was, was 🔥🔥🔥

Andie had a southern drawl on the audio book which was fine after I adjusted to it.

Overall I liked it. It was pleasantly predictable. The spice alone is enough to make me pick up the next book. Storyline was good 4/5 ⭐️

I struggle sometimes with the brother's best friend trope. The overbearing sibling is a conflict that never feels forbidden enough for me. But I really liked this! With the addition of music, forced-proximity home renovations, and a little family mystery, there was a lot of fun elements added to the plot that kept me invested.

Secretly pining after each other for years, the chemistry between Wyatt and Andie was perfectly clear from the start ... thanks to that electric on-page dance sequence! As they eventually progress into more than friends, I loved their sly attempts to keep their relationship private in public.

Flaky and known for his carefree lifestyle, Wyatt often underestimated his strengths. Andie was the stability he needed to push him towards his dreams. I simply adored the encouragement she provided him.

This was sweet, steamy, and an overall great time. And I love the central connection of the characters through a family owned creamery. I'm looking forward to book two!

This is the 1st book in Susannah Nix’s King Family series. I think this might be a spin-off from another series, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment. (Though now I would love to hear how some of those couples got together.).

I love Brother’s Best Friend/Best Friend’s Sister trope as well as friends to lovers and they were both in full force here. Wyatt King is the black sheep of his ice cream empire family and trying to carve his own path in life. Andie Lockhart is Josh’s (his best friend) sister, but also a close friend in her own right. Josh made it clear years ago that he didn’t want Wyatt and Andie together. Wyatt’s been living a life of no new attachments since. Wyatt’s kind of a mess on other fronts - a lot stemming from his chaotic family, disinterest in the family business, and his less than ideal father.

Toss in another favorite trope of forced proximity while Wyatt does repairs on Andie’s house and this was just a great set up for me. These two finally get together and realize how perfect they are for each other. While there is a “third act breakup”, I like that it’s resolved quickly and Wyatt’s grand gesture is adorable. I do wish that Wyatt had done a little more self-examination & acknowledgement of some of his behavior outside of his relationship with Andie. Nix did a lot to build those up and then just kind of left them out there semi-unresolved, perhaps they’ll play in future books more.

Loved the epilogue and am excited for more King siblings to get their HEA. I can’t wait for Lucy & Tanner’s book next.

Narration:
I’m swoony over Amanda Stribling & Chris Brinkley’s narration. They’re both so talented and paired together with this small Texas town’s residents - it’s absolute perfection. A dream to listen to.

Content Warnings (possible spoilers):
excessive drinking (getting repeatedly drunk) & marijuana use by MC

I received a copy of the audiobook from Home Cooked Books and am leaving an honest review.

arc provided by netgalley in exchange for an honest review

i was SO excited when i got approved for an arc of this book; the cover is gorgeous, the synopsis is intriguing and i love me a bit of childhood-friends-for-over-ten-years-to-lovers.

unfortunately, this book just wasn’t for me; it reminds me a lot of the romance books i used to pick up when i was a teenager, recycling the same plot line and character personality traits.

wyatt is in his early thirties (?) and all we hear about for the first half is how much of a womaniser he is; a new woman every night with little care for their feelings, perpetually drunk and mildly into drugs with a messy apartment and zero life prospects.

as you can probably guess, i just couldn’t get down with caring about him or his redeeming story line, or how it was a coping mechanism to drown his feelings for andie.

i felt like i’d read the overprotective big brother plot line one too many times, and this paired with it being the main reason for wyatt not acting on his feelings felt like a massive excuse for lack of a more complex character development and plot line.

now, i’m not saying the sex scenes were the only interesting and fun part of this book but....

as much as i wanted to enjoy this and root for the mc’s, i just couldn’t bring myself to care much about any of the characters or the trivial issues they came across. i felt like i’d read this book before, there was nothing overly unique about it, it’s extremely forgettable BUT it is a fun, quick read that i know a lot of people will love.

also, i’ll definitely be picking up lucy and tanner’s book, so hopefully i enjoy it more than this one!!

This book was maybe a bit too high school-y for me. It read like one of those stories on Fiction Press about your typically macho brother protecting the “innocent” sister from the best friend. It was cute when I was 15, but as a grown woman I found the story immature. And more so because we were dealing with grown adults instead of high schoolers.

Who, in their right mind, makes a promise to “never touch your sister”, as if women were objects with ownership? And who respects said stupid promise?

While the whole premise was super sexist, the author tried to compensate by making the heroine a feminist. How do I know this? Because of forced speeches like free the nipple in random situations. As if she were saying: “hey! This isn’t really a sexist book! I’m talking about women’s rights!” Yeah, no.

I don’t recommend this book (unless you’re a teenager who wants to read some sexy scenes).

*ALC received from Audibly Addicted in exchange for my honest review. *

One of my many guilty pleasures is a small-town southern romance. While there are hundreds of them out there, I find that so many of them are way too cliche. Yes, in Texas we like our sheet cakes, we like to western dance, and we probably say y'all too much, but we aren't as kitschy as the movies make us out to be. Susannah Nix however really brought in the perfect amount of southern charm with My Cone and Only.

Wyatt King is the forever bachelor but only known to himself the reason why. It is because back in high school he fell in love, and she is the only for him. The small problem with that is it is his best friend's little sister and them being together is not in the cards, ever. When a real estate developer threatens to take away Andie's home Wyatt is there to help her out because even if they can't be together, he can still protect her. Being around her day after day starts to take its toll on Wyatt and he isn't sure if he can keep his distance much longer.

Andie Lockhart has dreamed of kissing Wyatt King as long as she could remember. He is not only her friend but her protector even when she doesn't need it. Wyatt has made it through more than half of the women in town and if he was ever going to be interested in her it would have been before now. Andie has to find a way to move on but with Wyatt in her house everyday she can't put those feelings for him off to the side like she has always done.

One kiss, that is all it takes for Wyatt & Andie to realize that this thing between them is much more than friendship or lust, it is everything. Wyatt adores having Andie but keeping the secret about their relationship from her brother could be the one thing that makes him lose her before he has even had a chance to fully love her.

I love finding new narrators, but I know about so many of the good ones when I find not one but two wonderful narrators it always makes me extra happy. Amanda Stribling had the perfect southern twang going on which reminded me a lot of Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama and I adored it completely. Chris Brinkley though WOW!! He had the perfect southern accent and when he said "darlin" my insides turned to straight goo. I will be looking for more out of these two for sure in the very near future.

Small town family drama, secrets and too much ice cream make for a perfect brother's best friend novel. Wyatt was indeed promiscuous but when he and Andie finally got their chance, he was all in and that was just entirely swoon worthy! Andie was smart, funny, and confident but she was so caught up in her feelings for Wyatt and the possibility of failure she was just expecting it. I truly adored the first book in the King Family series, and I am looking forward to seeing what is in store for the rest of the King siblings.

Brothers best friend romances are just...fraught with misogyny. And it usually isn't just that. It really doesn't make sense. Like, cmon why is he your best friend if he's a jackass? Is it because you're an asshole? Make it make sense.

But that wasn't really the issue here. The writing was unappealing and uninspired. The hero's deep-seated commitment issues were compelling and *different* but they never go anywhere.

Plus there's a mortifying groveling scene and not in the right way.

I'll have a full review soon(ish) but for now, I just have to say I adored this book. Wyatt and Andie were wonderful. Oh, the pining! The dancing! The heat! I loved all of it. Sure things got a little messy and I wanted to shake some sense into Wyatt, but it was on-brand for him. Plenty of swoons in this one.

Well this was just a sweet story to read. See what I did there? Cause the ice cream references? No? Okay.

I’m a little new to the romance scene, so this was my first best friend’s brother trope and… is it always so weird? I don’t have a brother, so I really cannot relate, but do brother’s really care that much about their sister’s dating lives? It just made me feel a little awkward but I think it’s a personal problem. I’m so thankful I don’t have a brother 😅

The beginning of this book was a little clunky for me. There was a lot of info dumping, exposition, telling over showing, etc. This is the first in the King Family series, so there was a lot to set up, but it overwhelmed me to get it all at once. Especially the King family dynamic. There’s half-siblings, step-siblings, estranged siblings… I still don’t understand everyone’s relation to one another 😵‍💫 I wish there was a family tree for me to reference or something.

Also, Tanner and Lucy were brought up a lot during the story, and I get it’s a set-up for book two, but it was starting to annoy me. I wanted to read about Wyatt and Andy, not Tanner and Lucy! I guess there’s a book that precedes this about Mia and Josh’s love story, but their relationship was much more subtle and less in your face than Tanner and Lucy’s so I didn’t mind those references as much.

Another bicker point is the cover. It’s misleading and accurate at the same time. I mean, yes there were a couple dance scenes, but they felt sort of random to me. If it’s on the cover, I sort of expected it to play a larger role in the story. A more accurate cover would probably show Wyatt and Andy doing some house renovations or something. The ice cream references the King’s family business and sets up the motif for the entire series, but maybe it just doesn’t make sense for Wyatt’s story to set-off the series since he’s so anti-ice cream. That bedroom scene though… I wish it hadn’t been cut off so abruptly!

And Wyatt’s attempt to win back Andie…

However, there’s still so much to love here! The story was so heart warming and I was really rooting for these two. I was skeptical when Andie and Wyatt got together so soon in the book, but the fake dating and secret situations they found themselves in were so thrilling. I loved how much Andie made Wyatt squirm in public! It made me too giddy.

And their characterization was just so good! Their flaws were backed up by their childhoods and my god I haven’t read characters so real in a romance before! I could really get inside their heads and understand why they did or said what they did. This author is definitely talented, and I do think I’ll continue the series, but after a little break. Right now, I’m craving some bubble gum ice cream 😋

This book was so good. I love friends-to-lovers, and this was such a great take on that trope. Wyatt and Andie have had feelings for each other since high school, but neither knows about the other. And Wyatt won't ever let on because Andie is his best friend's little sister. The tension is real and very well done.

I particularly enjoyed the dancing scenes, and they made me want to go out dancing. But really, their whole relationship shows chemistry and intimacy and trust with all their friends seeing how perfect they are for each other.

There's a lot going on beyond them too, as we get to meet Wyatt's extended family. He has many step and half brothers, and his family is well known as the owners of the major employer in their small Texas town. It took a bit for me to follow all the relationships. Once I did, I could see how well this story will set up an ongoing series with lots of potential for drama.

This was my first book by Susannah Nix. I was only a few chapters in before realizing it followed the last of her Chemistry Lessons series. So I fully expect to get and read all of those soon. And I will be eagerly anticipating the next in the King Family series.

Thank you to Haver Street Press, Susannah Nix and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. These opinions are my own.

Nix starts this new series off with a bang—somewhat literally, given this book may be her steamiest yet. It’s the quintessential brother’s best friend trope, giving us ALL the forbidden romance/secret lover sexual tension 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I wasn’t sure how I felt about the book in the beginning, but I quickly got into and devoured it in one sitting. Andie and Wyatt are fantastic together.

But I think we need to take a moment to talk about how much Josh (Andie’s brother and Wyatt’s best friend) sucks in this book, which is a shame, because I liked him in Nix’s precious book (from which this series is a spin-off). But he takes the protective older brother schtick to the extreme and ends up really destroying the happiness of two of his favorite people. Men. 🙄

I’m really excited to see the rest of the King Brother’s stories—I know Tanner’s is next but I’m really looking forward to Brady’s (assuming we get it)… who doesn’t love a rock star romance?

5⭐️- 9/10

Alright, picked this up on a whim. I struggled to get into it as an ebook, got a physical copy, switched back to ebook, and ended up skimming the last 25% of it.

It was fine? I was kinda hoping for a new Winston brothers-esque and it was not that at the end of the day. It checks a lot of the same boxes, small town(ish), large family, music, etc. BUT it didn't pluck the emotional markers for me. It had way more spice as well which was not packing as much of an emotional wallop so it was (just) fine.

I don't think I'll read the next one as it's a second chance romance, which we all know are not my favorite. I think I'll try a different series by this author but if it doesn't click, it doesn't click.

This novel was such a surprise, I requested the arc because I thought that will be a light read and it was. I didn't have expectations because was my first Susannah's book and I enjoyed it so much.

We need to talk about Wyatt and Andie, I loved them together and individually, they were so real. I was eating ice cream while I was reading this book and I choked on a mouthful of ice cream when they danced. That scene was amazing, one of my favorite scenes for sure.

I love when both characters have pov in the book because that is how I get to know and understand them. Honestly, the development of Wyatt was well written. How I got the idea that he was just a womanizer, but then I read him and I was speechless, he was feeling so lonely, broken and was such a good man. He took bad decisions, but he was good.

If we talk about Andie I will just say that I love independent, strong, and brilliant heroines. That is how she is. I enjoyed their moments as friends, but I loved them as a couple.

I had my issues with Wyatt and Josh promise, I wanted to punch them on their noses. I just can't handle promises like that on books, I know promises are important, but I was losing my mind.

I'm looking forward to reading about all the king siblings and I got an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley.
