Or for the Promise of Passion and Love. . .
For the lovers of Ellen Marie Wiseman’s, The Orphan Collector, Leesa Wright has brought her love of history to life in this new 20th Century Historical Fiction Romance. OPERATION AMETHYST is available now. Come and be swept up in this romantic saga set in the midst of the Vietnam War.
Set amidst a war, Leesa Wright’s Operation Amethyst immediately catapults readers into an action filled event. As the sheltered ballerina, Elyse attempts to return home for a family emergency, her chopper is struck by enemy fire. Surviving the ordeal, she encounters Elijah and his team. Attraction builds for these two as they brave the rough terrain, escape dangerous situations, and face a long journey home.
Operation Amethyst is filled with descriptive imagery, however we found ourselves seeking more fluid chemistry between the characters, and a slightly faster pace.
Thank you to Leesa Wright for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was sent a copy of Operation Amethyst by Leesa Wright for review.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. Elyse is the Prima Ballerina for the South Vietnamese ballet company during the Vietnam War. Her father is the American Ambassador and former General in the US Military. When her life is threatened, she is airlifted out but unfortunately her chopper is shot down and she is the only survivor. As she tries to escape the VC in the jungle, she ends up literally in the lap of Captain Elijah Corrington and his team. When Elijah takes her to base camp, he is informed of the price on Elyse's head and the hunt to find her. He is tasked with her personal protection and to ensure she doesn’t find out about the plot to kidnap her.
There is a constant treat of VC attacks, unwanted male attention and the fallout of Elyse's rebellious streak. Elijah and Elyse butt heads but this heat quickly turns into sparks of arousal and they come together under the most dangerous circumstances. Can Elijah keep Elyse alive long enough to outrun the VC or will someone within the inner ranks of the military betray her whereabouts? They come from different worlds, can their love really survive a war or will it get them killed?
I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟. It provides good detail on the war and Vietnam. The characters were well developed, flawed but likeable and their interactions were honest and realistic. I was a little frustrated with Elyse at times as I felt she was unnecessarily reckless in a war zone. I really liked her though as she wasn’t the simpering damsel in distress but also wasn’t a know it all either. She learned about life and grew as a character (and she can kick ass). I liked Elijah too. Product of his time in parts and I wanted to slap him but genuinely a good guy willing to protect Elyse with his life. I also loved the members of her protection detail. They were fun, big brothers and also added something to the scenes they were in. I really enjoyed the book and thought it was interesting, funny and compelling with an unconventional twist on a romance story. The pacing was a little slow in parts but that didn’t impede the plot too much.
This is the funniest romance book that I have ever read. The plot is very reminscent of the phrase "all good intentions leads to Hell". Yet, what made me give the book a 5 star rating was 1) the author dedication to accuracy of USMC and Navy jargon during the Vietnam era 2) her respectful approach to service and sacrifice and 3) how she wove the themes of life despite death, hate, and destruction. This book was an all nighter for me after the first 4 chapters.
Downside is that the romance has scenes that may trigger unwanted memories in some people as the story is a historical romance set during a very ugly war and during the U.S. women's liberation movement. Yet, if the author had ignored those nuances in the plot, the story would not have been very good as the plot would seem false.
An amazing story of war and love! The story starts off with a bang. It dives right into the action and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire journey. The book accurately portrays the Vietnam conflict and the military during a tumultuous period in our country’s history. Mixed with a little romance and playful fun, this story will touch the hearts of all audiences. This is not your typical romance novel!
Operation Amethyst is an engaging story with terrific characters, and tense action broken by periodic laughter. OA is full of wonderfully descriptive language and nice details about the time period, from pop references to social commentary. All in all, an engaging journey through a hot jungle and a steamy romance!
OMG!!!! Where has this book been all my life?! I never thought these two subjects could go hand in hand but I was wrong! Leesa Wright created the most vivid world imaginable, is historically spot on and creates characters you either want to hug or slap! Simply the best! I cannot wait for the next book and I promise, you won’t be disappointed!
A wonderful and unique love story that takes place during the Vietnam war. The author has a flair for developing her characters throughout the book. They grow in love and as people. Elyse is a strong but young and naive over achiever who meets her match in one of the most dangerous places on Earth. It is truly a wonderful first novel for Leeza Wright. I will be buying future books.
Elyse and Elijah are fantastic characters, as are all the supporting characters that make up their friends and family! There is so much danger for Elyse and she is so full of fire. This story had me laughing at her antics, as well as those of Elijah's brothers and crying for all the struggles they faced. It's a long story and yet I had a hard time stopping reading. It could use another round of editing for some minor typos, and a couple sections where repeated information is given like it's new (they are five years apart in age but she once joked she was about to turn 16 instead of 22, which he already was reminded of their age difference by her father and another time he was surprised by her knowing another language and she repeated learning a lot because her dad was trying to keep her busy and out of trouble growing up). A couple times there is a section set off- as if the time or POV is changing and yet neither seem to (probably POV, really, but it's so small and vague, the POV isn't even obvious to need it set off). But even with that said, it didn't take away from how much I loved their story (and I generally don't love stories in this time period....but I do love romantic suspense with military heroes).
What happens when a marine is tasked with protecting someone? In this case love. An interesting depiction of war life in Vietnam, with a love story rolled in. While the war scenes played a part I got Info the connection between Elyse and Elijah. Nice read.
This book is set during the Vietnam war. It is so well written and the Characters are so well developed that it caught my attention right from the beginning. I was so into this book that I was up almost all night finishing it.
