Senior year was supposed to be the best year of Berkley’s life—until it turned into a nightmare. Parental problems, boyfriend issues, scholarship competitions, and volleyball playoffs have her so stressed she can’t sleep. But when an insomnia driven excursion leads her to cross paths with some amateur witches, she’ll wish she stayed in bed.
Now she can finally sleep, but doesn’t seem to get any rest. Each day blurs into the next as strange things start happening around her. Dark, sinister things that tie back to Berkley, except she can’t remember any of them.
Desperate to regain control of her own life, she searches for an explanation to her nighttime amnesia. The answer will drag Berkley and her friends into a dangerous world of magic and mayhem—one where she may never wake up.
With magic, drama, and a touch of romance, SLEEPLESS is the perfect witchy young adult read for paranormal fans.
My favourite parts of this book were the friendship between Berkeley and Lane and the amount of Macbeth references. I absolutely love seeing strong friendships and Macheth is my favourite Shakespeare piece. It initially took me a little while to get into but once i hit maybe 25% i couldn't put it down. Overall a pretty good book.
I loved this story!! It was about friendship and also determination. Berkley was an excellent heroine. I wanted to read more and more to find out how Berkley makes it. The author keeps the reader engaged the whole way through.
I received an ARC of Sleepless by Scarlett Kol in exchange for an honest review thanks to being apart of the ARC team.
Review: Sleepless is a very unique story that is told in such a good way. I loved the layers that slowly unfold. There are 'mundane' problems and then 'supernatural' problems and they all make sense together. The characters are likable, although I did struggle getting attached to them. I couldn't help but think "oh that one's gonna be evil" even though there was no indication of it (because it didn't happen). But that caused me to look at everything they did with suspicion. The 'love interest' I did love though. Something about them is just so sweet and pure. The scene involving them were definitely my favorite.
Overall, I really enjoyed the plot. I wish that I had a better connection to the characters, but that is on me, not them. Each character has an individual voice and plenty of reasons to like them. I just wish that there was some more depth to a few of the side characters. I also want to give Berkley a hug because her life is.... oof.
I recommend this to those who enjoy a contemporary-romance with a witchy twist. Or really just want to watch a love triangle explode.
The best way to describe Sleepless by Scarlett Kol is: unexpected.
The premise of the book is that high school senior Berkley James is lured into the woods behind her home by a strange bright light and when she investigates, her life is changed eternally.
This story serves two distinct purposes: the first half of the book is a beautiful representation of everyday teenage life (though the themes throughout are not necessarily of happy nature), and the last half of the book is ripe with stunning magical visualization. The supporting characters that were introduced were the perfect fit to the flow of the story and were integral to the plot. The last half was definitely my favourite.
Sleepless is a standalone story that is both easy and casual, and intense and nail-biting. It was a solid 4-star read for me.
Sleepless is a mesmerizing story of Berkley James whose life is drastically changed by her decision to go for a walk when insomnia and stress won’t allow her to sleep. In her senior year, she feels overwhelmed by her parents, her boyfriend, and the upcoming volleyball playoffs which all contribute to stressful, restless evenings. She is unable to sleep and goes out for a walk. Somewhere during that walk, she comes upon amateur witches. From that time on, strange things start to happen yet she is unable to remember any of them.
Her nights now let her sleep, but it isn’t the restful sleep she needs. The strange occurrences still continue. And in trying to figure it all out, she is led into a world of magic and chaos. And there is as good chance she may never wake up. She wants to be normal, but is that hope long gone?
When Berkley, our fmc, accidently interrupts a magic ceremony her life is turned on its head. Already plagued by insomnia she finds herself losing time and feeling more and more tired each and every day. As her friends and her attempt find out what is happening Berkley must decided how far she is willing to go to save herself and her family.
I really enjoyed this book. It went in a direction that I did not expect and in doing so it allowed a new spin on a well worn genre. A Must read for all a little tired to of usual troupes.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sleepless is a haunting tale about how Berkley’s life is turned upside down when after a night of insomnia she crosses paths with some amateur witches and strange things start to happen. Berkley is in her senior year but parental problems, boyfriend issues and volleyball playoffs have her so stressed that she can’t sleep. Then when she crosses paths with amateur witches strange things start happening and she can’t remember any of them. This story was full of magic, drama and high school drama and was an excellent read!
This was really a very good book. It was well written and very fun to read. My favorite character is Berkeley. She seems to know what she wants and how to get it.I thought this was an amazing book and I definitely recommend this book too anyone who likes academy reads.
