Some days Charlie’s trying to recover his life after a disastrous accident... Some days Charlie forgets that his legs don’t work because of the crash... Some days the bodies Charlie saves were already gone... Some days the bodies Charlie finds are in his past... The constant is the killer taunting him. Calling Charlie when they please, making him play the game. Because the killer knows Charlie. Knows that even the good are bad. More importantly, knows what he did.
The much anticipated sophomore novel from Rhys Stalba-Smith visits again the landscapes of South Australia, but this time in the city. A killer is on the loose and the bodies are mounting. For Charlie Gardner, despite his best efforts to live a normal life, will find himself being pulled closer and closer into the Killer's game.
Told as separate timelines in three phases of the life of Charlie Gardner, this is initially a bit confusing for both Charlie and the reader but as the clues to his past are revealed the picture becomes a little bit clearer.
Thrust into the middle of a spate of serial killings Charlie finds himself taunted by the unknown killer who seems to know far too much about him.
Although set in Australia you can be forgiven for thinking that this could be in any city anywhere in the world as there is a lack of local colour and the use of Aussie slang is kept to a minimum. This, however, does not detract from the plot but I feel a chance was missed to showcase life down under.
As the plot unfolds it sucks you in and leaves the reader desperate to know exactly what happened in Charlie’s past that leads to the gripping conclusion.
Overall this was a slow, and slightly confusing, start but got much better as it went along.
This is the second book of his that I've read, and boy it didn't disappoint! There's mystery, crime, flashbacks, and above all great psychology! All the characters have such great development which changes the whole story line. You do have to pay attention at the beginning to get the hang of the when and who, but after that a breeze because it simply makes sense! A fantastic read that I would definitely recommend. Looking forward to the next one now....
Interesting storyline but could be confusing at times. I found myself having to focus on my reading at all times to keep up with the characters and the crimes.
