A beautiful Szalavitz-Perry book written about the healing and treatment of children who cannot continue the usual flow of their lives because of the traumas they have experienced, who have been stuck somewhere and their lives have flowed away from those stay-states.

It is impossible not to be impressed while reading this book, which was written by going over the cases that have happened. There is a beautiful Decription of the defense mechanisms developed by the human brain, the messages between the lines about childhood given by the lifestyle. In addition to these tragic stories, it is also possible to reach the details of how the authors found solutions to these cases, which they could not find, and were helpless. Also, these experiences (provided that they are not forgotten) have a very good guidance for readers for the situations they may encounter in their lives. That's why I think it's especially important for teachers and parents to read.

Focusing on the issues of child labor, child abuse and violence against children, the Szalavitz-Perry duo also focused on the reactions and attitudes of the child's brain when exposed to excessive stress. Apart from the usual stresses, it is also a guiding work on the treatment and therapy of unusual stress dynamics.

Although I mentioned it at the beginning, let me write it again, the stories told have a weight that will sit on your chest like a stone. My advice is to start the book by taking this situation into consideration before reading. I hope that such books reach people who have been insensitive about the subject. Otherwise, neither this review nor the quotes about the book have any meaning. All therapists should read this book. So much valuable psycho education but digestible and captivating. The case studies were often devastating but very moving. I feel like professors teaching a course on trauma should make this assigned reading.

This was my first peak into the world of psychology and gave a great explanation of the importance of psychology as a necessity for physical health. It also gives insight into the power of the environment, human touch, and connection.

A very detailed book written about childhood trauma using a neurosequential approach that supposes trauma during any phase of early childhood development can negatively impact the stress response system of a child and their ability to cope. Bruce Perry, a psychiatrist and author of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, presents various case scenarios involving children who have encountered traumatic experiences that include prolonged neglect, cult upbringings, sexual abuse, lack of physical affection, exposure to physical violence, genocide survivors, murder witnesses, etc.

Perry’s mode of recovery assumes that children can be effectively healed by receiving the stimulation they did not have at specific developmental points of their lives. He offers a thorough discussion around the brain’s malleability during formative years and the implication trauma/stress can have on proper physiological development.

“The responses of traumatized children are often misinterpreted...Because new situations are inherently stressful, and because youth who have been through trauma often come from homes in which chaos and unpredictability appear "normal" to them, they may respond with fear to what is actually a calm and safe situation.”

As a social worker I’ve witnessed the long-lasting implications childhood trauma has on my clients. I appreciated how Perry’s work demonstrates that treatment entails determining how trauma sensitizes the fight or flight system, and exploring what behaviours the children use to cope such as disassociating, self-harming, etc. Retraining the brain involves returning to the beginning from when the trauma occurred.

Additionally, Perry provides a hopeful perspective into how healthy relationships between people can improve neurological, physical, and mental health. Perry warns that the breakup of the extended family system, and growing social isolation increases the risks of childhood trauma. Perry emphasizes that it is very difficult to love ourselves without being loved by others, and that the key to a thriving, healthy society rests in the strong relationships that form inside it

Hard.
Harrowing.
Insightful.
I never realised how important all that motherly: swaddling, patting, rocking, swaying, cooing, singing and smiling ......was.
It is sad that the absence of these basic human connections in the first year can sometimes cause irreparable damage.
How different our lives can turn out, all pending on these first years of life.

Loved the brain science behind the theories.

I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone working with traumatized children. The cases presented in this book highlight the resilience that humans are capable of when appropriate therapeutic and supportive interventions are used. I appreciate that the author published this updated novel that has pages in the back describing new research and expanding on topics briefly touched on.

It's hard to give a full on accurate rating for this book because you need to get past the "Oh my ***" moments. I appreciated the trigger warnings for sure!

We live in a cruel world and are blessed with people who can help people find a way to emotional healing and freedom.

Really interesting read. Sort of hard to get into at first. It's very "science-y" but once it started including the stories as examples it was an easier read. It was interesting to see how touch, communication and loving interactions early on in a child's life can change how the child develops.

This book took me so long to read because it is heavy with multiple case studies of children who experienced neglect and abuse. I found it to be super informative about the development of the brain which is why I give it 3 stars
However I am looking forward to my next lighter read

The stories in this book are intense. And I encourage pacing as the book recommends as well. The book is written with research and respect for the patients.
