Although this seems to be a rather "new" fantasy novel series by the author, there is not much thought that is going into the plot arcs and story developments to make them as interesting as possible. It's as if, the main priority of this author is for the main character to procreate, breed and populate this alternate reality world. In the first volume, main character Ben, had 2 beast-folk children with Melody a Cat-kin first wife, but already had 30 eggs on the way. By the end of this second volume, Ben already has 7 children, with his four original wives, and at least one additional wife and her egg being born soon.
It seems that one of the sub-plots for the author is freeing the slaves, whether they be beast-folk, spirit-folk or humans...that and killing off all of the slavers and invaders to the black tower of the Forgotten Ruler. So Benjamin has to rediscover and reconquest, his forgotten and lost Empire....(which is going to take forever, if in the first 2 volumes, he's "conquered one of 5 towers, a green mound, and a small town in the north that was used as a stop point, for slavers to transport their slaves...)
This second volume has 250+ pages and only 19 chapters (about 11-12 pages a chapter). Which means that there is little to no character development, world building or governance. It's basically the sexual relations, eating and traveling of the main character and his retinue...So, yes, it's "Filler-time!"
There are 3 volumes so far, the third one was published January of 2022. This author loves really long, long, long, stories 10-15-18+ volumes long or longer... The thing is they lack entertainment value. The offspring story arc has gotten so cyclical that the author has started to number the offspring instead of giving all of the children unique names...and this is with only 10 children and about 29 on their way, this can't get any worse right?? and yes, it is absurd that mammals that birth their young (viviparity) (inside of the womb), are all turned into oviparity birthing (through eggs), like the birds, the reptiles, etc. like if the author all of a sudden forgot about Biology and science, and said that the Easter Bunny is a God in this freaking world so thus, everybody here is getting born from an Easter Egg (surprise!) to justify all of the sex that Ben, the reincarnated Forgotten Ruler, (father of most of the eggs that are born in this world)...
