Gran used to say that a strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink. To be sure, flirting with challenges is a terrible idea. Ask me how I know.
All Bree really wants is to bury her head in the sand, somewhere in the south of France while a hot pool boy rubs lotion on her back.
Instead, Bree gets blackmailed by the Council of Savannah into a job she doesn’t want—though it does take her to France. They need her to bring a witch back to Savannah for a trial that Bree is sure is a load of hooey.
But not just any witch. The first one. The oldest one. The one who makes a t-rex look like he’s howling about a sore tooth. The one who makes the wicked witch of the west look like your sweet old nanny, the one who . . .well you get the picture.
Bree’s job? Find her. Befriend her. And convince her to come back to Savannah for safekeeping.
But someone else has gotten a head start, and their reasons for tracking down the miserable old witch are far worse than the council's reasons.
None other than a sexy, growly blacksmith with pretty eyes who makes Bree’s panties melt even though she knows he isn’t for her. And he is looking for the same miserable old lady.
Throw in a lovesick siren, and a slew of new problems, and you’ve got Bree’s next adventure busting at the seams. And no, it isn’t because her pants are too small.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
I absolutely love this series, it brings so much fun, laughter, love and a bite of mystery. The characters are brilliant and very individual.. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that 2 characters in particular find their way before the end of the series or I will be very unhappy with Ms Mayer!
Bree has to be one of my all time favourite characters ever, her age, her personality, her 'potty mouth', her friends.... Just everything about her screams to me, I absolutely love her and the stuff she gets up to. Crash is just something else, that hot, gorgeous something else that most story lines have... however... not every story line has a 'Bree' and this is what makes the difference.
I'm totally excited to see where this is going - I need the next book now!!!!
I really like this story. Really, I do. But I feel like every story sends me 1 step forward and 2strps back in trying to figure out what the heck is really going on. SOOOO many characters and convoluted story arcs. The main issue I find now is that books are 9-10 months apart and I forget what the world happened in the previous story and who betrayed who and why. I want Bree with Crash. I appreciate the prologue because we got a peek behind the curtain and then it all crashed and burned...mostly, sort of. See what I mean? Forward and then back. I'm wishing I had Two to three more years to care about the next 3 or 6 books remaining in this series, but I'm not sure it's worth that investment. Especially with the way this one ends. I've added book 7 to my TBR list, but that may seriously be my last journey with Bree and the gang unless our brilliant author gives me more worth waiting on. All of that to say the witch hunter installment was a fun, action packed addition to the canon, I just wish it had given me more hope and not the same kind I've had for the first 6 books. Real hope. I actually feel like I've been left more hopeless than ever before. And that's saying something.
Series Info/Source: This is the 6th book in the Forty Proof series. I borrowed this book for my Kindle through Kindle Unlimited.
Thoughts: I found this book disappointing. Some of it might be because I just finished the last book in the Leveling Up series by K.F. Breene and the books are fairly similar in theme, so I can’t help but compare them…and I like the Leveling Up series a lot more. This book starts a bit slow, feels disorganized, and Bree makes a lot of bad decisions right from the get go. The excessive amount of age jokes (when Bree is only in her 40’s) and the constant man-bashing continue to be annoying.
The premise is that Bree gets sent to France by the Council of Savannah to protect the first witch so that the first witch’s soul can’t be used to summon a legion of vampires. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen until nearly half way through the book because the beginning of the book has Bree angsting over Robert, dodging Karissa’s minions and trying to gear up. Another hot new male character is added, and he is intriguing. However, I continue to have a large complaint about the way Bree treats the male characters in the book.
The theme of male incompetence is still very thick in this series and continues to annoy me. It’s sexism at its worst. I love strong female characters but respect goes both ways. Throughout the book Bree continues to objectify the men around her (how many times does she say she needs to get laid by whatever hot man she is pressed against?) She also continues to be disrespectful and dismissive of the men around her in a very unreasonable way. Again, in comparing this to the Leveling Up series…you can have a protagonist that has gone through a bad divorce and hates that one man but they can still have healthy, respectful, relationships with other males. There is little balance and growth here and a lot of hate and this is the main reason I plan on stopping reading this series…that and how scattered and amateurish the plot has gotten. Bree needs to grow up some and learn to respect her team, the men around her need to stop taking her disrespect in stride.
My Summary (3/5): Overall I thought this was a disappointing addition to this series and am perplexed by the high reviews here. The good points are that there are some interesting supernatural creatures and I liked the change of scenery. However, there are a lot of negatives here as well. The plot is scattered and sloppy, Bree hasn’t grown as a character and continues to make horrible decisions, and another hot man is added for Bree to drool over. The bad age jokes and Bree’s constant overdosing on Advil and alcohol continue in earnest; in general most of the humor is in poor taste.. The story is rampant with sexism; the men are treated as objects and disrespected…there is no balance and no healthy relationships here…I am done with this series.
I'm not sure how I feel about this series anymore. I REALLY loved it in the beginning. Then....it just never seemed to progress. The female MC is impulsive, the love interest became infuriating, and we still had no real idea about what type of paranormal she was by the 5th book. After the last book, I told myself I was done.
Well......the next book came out and I thought, "okay, maybe just one more..."
So, first of all, I'll say this book was better than the last book. We did have a little story arc progression (FINALLY). We kinda know what she is now. Unfortunately, instead of anything happening with Crash (the male MC that she keeps getting THIS close to sleeping with and then *BAM* something happens...which wouldn't really be a problem if it hadn't happened 86 times already..) So, instead of anything progressing, there is the introduction of a NEW love interest!!
I wanted to pull my hair out.
And....we get another cliffhanger. This one wasn't REALLY a cliffhanger per se, at least not like the ones in the past, so, there is that.
I'm still on the fence with this series. Will I continue? I think it will matter on the type of mood I'm in when the next book comes out.
Why does Mayer think that slow burn romance with death or betrayal or “insert way to keep lovers apart” is the best? She does this in every book and it kills me. She builds up the steam and then bam pulls the rug right out from under you. Character development still not happening. Do we have more knowledge about what Bree really is? Nope! Did we get more hints about what she is? Maybe. I mean we are six books in I thought I’d be further along in this story. I enjoy the adventure/quest aspects of this book and I really like the characters even though they lack in development. I just want something to happen with Bree. Everything happens around her but nothing happens to her. Also why does she say “ducking” all of the time. I can’t remember. I never really noticed till this book but it drove me insane. Also I get it Bree is in the height of midlife. Why does she have to talk about it all of the time. I love me some midlife characters but jeeze Mayer makes it sound like Bree is 89 going on 100. Anyways, quest adventure=100, character development = -1. will I keep reading? Probably because I love Mayer’s stories even though her endings aren’t always what I want.
I just finished the 6th book of this series, and the 7th is due out in August. This is my second series by Mayer. I loved the premise of this series: middle aged witch finding her way, group of friends helping her battle evil, and potential love interests scattered throughout. In this book, they must travel to France at the Council’s request, and save a witch from being sacrificed for a vampire army. I really enjoyed this story in the first few books, but it seems to have stalled. I love the idea of Bree, but she hasn't seen any growth as a person in six books and her hot and cold relationships with the love interests of this series. Her episode with Crash kind of ruined this for me. The magical side of this book was great but the relationship side of this left a lot to be desired and this may be the last book I read for a while. I really wanted to love this the same way I loved KF Breane’s similar midlife series, but Mayer has made that impossible. (3/5 rating)
It was fun, but really? Another dude? It's a little farfetched, and seems unnecessary. If Bree is so independent couldn't Remy have been left out, or not interested in her. I don't think I can go on in the series.

This was my favorite in the series so far. Bree’s growth is a wonderful thing to witness. She’s truly coming into her own power but without sacrificing those she loves most. She grows braver, stronger, and wiser in each book. Her missteps and physical limitations make her feel like a real person. I really enjoyed all the action and challenges Bree faced with her trust sidekicks on the mission to save the first witch. I hope the next audiobook will be available soon.
I can't get enough of this series. It's fun and funny and hot (hello steamy kisses with several different hot dudes). To be honest, I'd love to read a version of this whole series as a reverse harem. But, I love that despite hot dudes falling at her feet, Bree chooses herself. And, it's perfect. After the life she's lived, she deserves an incredible partner and sadly these hot dudes just don't cut it. Yeah Crash, I'm talking about you.
I love the magical world and Bree's incredibly diverse friendship group. I'm obsessed with Skeletor. Wow, what an amazing creature. And with such beautiful friendships, there's no need for mediocre love from any of these mediocre suitors.
I'm anxious to discover what happens next in the story. Will an army of vampires rise in the next book? I'm hoping it takes a few more books to find out and we'll get to go on more adventures with Bree and the gang. 💋
I enjoyed this book very much. I listened to the audio version the most and I enjoyed the narrator bring the story to life. Bree always finds a bit of trouble in each story but she is true to her friends. In this book we travel with Bree and her friends to south of France on a hunt for the first witch. We meet some new friends and say a fair well, in a sense, to old friends. Can Bree find and protect the first witch? Why is she looking for her? Find out when you read or listen to this next adventure in the Forty Proof series. Great book!
Shannon Mayer's "Midlife Witch Hunter" (Forty Proof #6) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon's fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.
Is this series getting better? No. The last 2 books were 3 stars. I love the characters and the adventure, but Bree's hot and cold relationship with ALL the men (specially Crash) is just so off putting, I mean this is book 6 of 9 maybe 12 books. Also, every question asked is never answered and too many loose ends. What is Remy? Bree? Find out, maybe, is the next book... If the big idea was to leave the reader frustrated... Well goal accomplished. Am I anticipating the next release in August? Unfortunately no, not like before.
I am really torn on this book. She has no idea what she is doing. She is losing Allie’s and making decisions without fully understanding the consequences. I am really mad and then sad at the situations she finds herself in. I honestly had to stop because I was so frustrated with what the author was doing. I feel like I’m in a rollercoaster ride with no stop.
Author lost her way on this one, characters are thin, simplistic and plot almost silly. Not up to standard of rest of series. Read if you are a fan of series to keep abreast. Otherwise skip it. I enjoyed other books in series but this one fell flat
This is book 6 so I may drop a few spoilers but I try to keep it contained. We started out with a rag tag bunch, a werewolf, a male Siren. leprechaun brothers, a necromancer with no affinity for the dead. We meet a trickster spider the Fae king & Queen, a River maid, skeletal man, a skeletal horse, ghosts, goblins, Demons and a Bigfoot who is in love with a female swamp siren. As we move through this series alliances shift and Breena O’Rylee must quickly accept that logic & reason with her gut instincts are best to listen to when dealing with ‘friends like these’. Dr. Modi explains it best with a golden table. The reverse side is darkness and many of these characters move between the two not inherently one or the other. By the time she hits French shores she is accompanied by one of her grandmothers coven, Penny, Feish, Robert in man form, Skelator, Suzy, Kinkly, and a Bigfoot. She has lost some of her Far magic but she too has a tad dark in her which should explain Crash’s attraction. She meets up with Remy, loses Suzy, Corbs gone to the dark side and Roderick & the council are starting to see how great a guardian she’s becoming. Ultimately I love this series because of all the moving arts, the incredible action scenes that continue to roll off the pages and the incredible tapestry of so many mythical creatures woven seamlessly into this perfect imperfect world. I do hate cliffhanger books however since these books are published it doesn’t leave me with a pit in my stomach. It just makes me eager to jump into the next one.
I was so happy to see the next book in this series, and I dived in. It was so good to see Bree, Eric, Penny, Gran…oh, heck, all of the characters even the bad ones. Poor Bree is dealing with the devastating events of the previous book, deciding whether or not to use the potion, and she’s drawn into Council business again. Along the way, we meet a new character, and I’m both afraid and intrigued at the same time. Bree has to deal with some difficult losses in this one, and I was sad with her. However, there is a new book coming and maybe things will get better. But I bet they’ll get worse first. This was an entertaining, fun, sad, well-written book, and I am looking forward to the next one. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This series is so incredible and with every new addition it just gets better and better. Bree is an absolutely fantastic character and is one that you can relate to easily especially feeling her aches and pains but she battles on ( with the assistance of Advil!) and is so so strong and totally kicks ass! The storyline well it just blew me away. Fast paced , exciting, thrilling, I would say a totally rollercoaster but that’s just not wild enough for team Bree. It’s an amazing adventure with some incredible characters, twists and turns to make your head spin and have you on the edge of your seat one minute and then howling with laughter the next. I absolutely love Bree and her crew and I have no ducking clue as to whom Bree may end up with if anyone, but boy is it worth the journey.
Bree is on another adventure filled with magical creatures and lots of danger and must again use wit, humor and thinking outside the box to get out of danger, alive. The Council in Savannah has sent her on what could be another suicide mission. They need her to bring back the most powerful witch alive. So Bree is off to France to find this mysterious witch and try not to get killed. There are others searching for the witch as well. Who can be trusted? And who will betray her. There are monsters, leprechauns, werewolves, Fae, Demons, goblins, sirens, and all kinds of monsters and magic. So fast paced I couldn't put it down!
This character is running through love interests faster than a nymph through a nudest camp. It is becoming more difficult for me to over look the whining and stupid decisions this h makes at every turn, like drinking and getting drunk with only 24 hours to go on this book’s apocalyptic ending… and she’s suppose to be tracking someone to prevent it from happening. Not to mention that she gets played over and over by the same untrusting people and has every important items stolen from her time and time again.
I’m losing patience with this series. But I’ll give the next one one last chance before I decide whether to continue or to leave it.
To quote the book about Bree (the heroine): "You are not young; you do not fit most people's idea of the heroine of a story. You're clumsy, you make mistakes, and you aren't particularly fast or strong if I compare you to other supernaturals. You are just... you. And I'll admit that is somewhat fascinating and... refreshing."
Usual mess and abundance of mythical creatures. Plus now it also happens in France for a bit. :D
Lots of action and running around by Bree and the gang. New characters who are finding their place in the group, and old characters leaving the group due to lies, betrayal, and sabotage. A lot of “it’s a small world” relating to new characters and old characters so that’s cool. Excited to read the next book.
Gawd, I'm sick of this series. I hate Bree. Why does everyone in this book like her? In this book, she's not only ageist but sexist. Blaming all the world's problems on men. When they find the first witch and Karissa, Crash, Corb, and Robert are captured, she bypasses Karissa and blames the men there. Calling them all liars because they have testicles and that they'll always lie to get what they want. Oh, and losers, even Robert. She thinks they're all losers because they were Mr. Right Now instead of Mr. Right. Well, she never really had feelings for any of them, anyway, just wanted to get in their pants. Anyone's pants really, since now she has the hots for Remy. She called her friend Robert, who only ever tried to save and protect her a loser. Who she'll have to kill because she stupidly brought him back as a vampire because she didn't bother finding out why he was called Robert of the Damned and who saved her life and died after she said that. And while Crash is doing everything to protect her because he loves her, Bree's only regret is that she didn't get a chance to sleep with him. Should I torture myself with reading the next two books because I bought the whole series audiobooks and can't return them? I don't know if I can bring myself to read them just because I spent $20 on the last two.

This one dragged a bit up until over half way through. It felt like a filler book with very little substance. I love the story though and will.continue on to the next book I the series, hoping it picks up and helps tie up some loose ends.
