Returning to her hometown was not in the plans, and neither was falling for her former best friend…
Briyana Hayes can’t seem to catch a break.
The job offer she expected after taking an unpaid internship at a major shoe company didn’t come through. The friend who’d offered her a place to stay suddenly gave her forty-eight hours to vacate after a misunderstanding. And when she’s forced to move back to her hometown to live with her father and his mistress-turned-wife, it almost seems impossible for things to get any worse… until she runs into her former best friend who’s only gotten fine with time.
With his sixth season as the starting linebacker for his hometown Houston Skyhawks on the horizon, the only thing Lance Hawkins is looking forward to is another year of getting paid and chasing accolades. But when he discovers that the girl he once considered his best friend is back in the city, he quickly finds himself intrigued by a different kind of pursuit after seeing how attractive she’s gotten.
Even with the fallout of the past, their undeniable chemistry as friends makes it impossible for the two of them to remain distant. And once romantic feelings get involved, it doesn’t take long for Briyana and Lance to find themselves on a journey of not only reestablishing what once was, but also exploring what could be.

Oh, it's the battle of the friends to lovers troupe because Can't Catch Me is trying real hard to unseat Just a Friend as my favorite 2021 book. But, it definitely has a solid spot as my fave number two of 2021. Y'all, this book was so freakin' good! It checked every single one of my boxes. Alexandra Warren put her foot and left elbow in this book. If there were ever two people meant to be together, it was Briyana and Lance. They were perfect for each other. Their chemistry was amazing. Even when Briyana called herself trying to put distance between her and Lance, their chemistry and attraction was so very obvious. After the job she was hoping for at Nike falls through and other pitfalls in life, Briyana moves back to Houston to try to figure some things out. While living with her daddy, she runs into her former BFF Lance who just so happens to play for the Houston Skyhawks. Briyana and Lance had somewhat of a falling out at the end of their senior year and haven’t spoken to each other since. When she and Lance see each other for the first time in almost 10 years, it’s like no time has passed for him. He immediately wants to pick up and restart their friendship. Lance soon realizes he doesn’t just want to rekindle their friendship; he wants to get somethin’ romantically poppin with his former BFF. Briyana’s not even sure she wants to be friends again with Lance let alone start a romantic relationship with him. But, she and Lance have so much in common. Their love of sports and addiction to athletic shoes makes it hard for Briyana to not be attracted to Lance. After a little push and pull, these two start burnin’ up the sheets and, oh, did they burn those sheets up! Their relationship takes off and is going great until Briyana’s side hustle gets noticed by Nike and they offer her the job that initially fell through. This becomes a point of contention between her and Lance and they kinda sorta break up. I completely understand why he was so angry. Briyana accepting the job without discussing it with him was pretty much a repeat of why they fell out all those years ago. It takes the young man Lance is mentoring to show him how immature he’s being about the whole situation without even hearing Briyana out. Lance immediately hops on a plane to Oregon to go get his woman back and all is right in their world. Can’t Catch Me was a phenomenal book. I especially loved that the setting was in H-Town. I really enjoyed the authenticity of the storyline. The author’s research about football was on point. I loved how the story alternates between Briyana and Lance’s perspectives. The characters were well developed and backed by a wonderful cast of side characters. I can’t wait to read Snoop and Gerald’s story. Get into this book ladies and gentlemen. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This started out as a great second chance romance! Briyana left town for college and before anything romantic could happen between her and Lance. Now, she's back home after college and Lance is a hot-shot NFL player. They run into each other and Lance knows he wants Briyana now, but she's much more hesitant. I loved how they danced around each other but couldn't stop thinking about each other. They had to deal with their feelings from the past and what that meant for the present. Where things kind of petered out for me was about 80% into the book. The couple was pretty much established and there was just other drama that was involved that I didn't really care about. This had more to with their jobs, and if the conflict is not longer about the relationship, I'm not as interested anymore. But I love that our hero was an NFL player and that they had the chance to reconnect as adults!
This was a really good story with a lot of humor in it….I can’t wait to see what happens next for Bri & Lance as well as Bri’s parents John & Claudia…because I know there’s a story there between the two of them.
Today was my second time reading this story…this time I enjoyed 2 of my absolute favorite narrators bringing one of my favorite Alexandra Warren stories to life….Wesleigh and Jakobi were amazing delivering the story of Lance & Briyana!
I loved this book so much. I'm just now getting into Ms. Warren's catalog (which is crazy because where have I been LOL) and she didn't disappoint. This was everything I wanted in a sports romance. Lance "Hawk" & Briyana "Yani" aka Squirrel aka Sandy Cheeks 🤣 story tugged at my heart strings. Their journey from being best friends to lovers was one to watch or should I say read 🥰
Y'all know I'm a sucker for friends to lovers, but throw in sports romance and a Wesleigh/Jakobi narration?! I had too much fun listening to this one.
Briyana had big dreams for herself after college, but life happens and she's back in her hometown living with her dad and his new wife. One of the things Briyana left behind when she moved away years ago was the boy across the street. That boy is now Lance Hawkins, a seasoned linebacker for their hometown NFL team. These two left off on a sour note and haven't spoken since Briyana skipped town. However, once these two are back together and get through what went down, their friendship picks up where it left off. The only difference are the new feelings between them that they can't resist exploring because there's no better lover than a best friend, right?
I ate this up. I loved Briyana and Lance's shared hobby and expertise in all things sneakers, and how much Lance encouraged Briyana not to give up on her sneaker design dreams. Their friendship was so natural that when it progressed to something more, the sexiness of it all was how effortless it was. Of course, there was a third act breakup, but it actually made sense given their history with each other. Yes, Briyana had a rich man that was willing to take care of her, but I loved that the author made sure Briyana was able to stand on her own two feet and follow her passions. Lance could follow and get with the program, or she was leaving him behind.
This author clearly has a well-researched knowledge of sports, which makes her sports romances so much fun to read because as someone who knows nothing about sports, I appreciate those details. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series given how intriguing that hero was in this book!
TROPES: black romance/BIPOC/OWN voices; sports romance (football); childhood friends to lovers (with a little separation in between); neighbors-ish; rich hero
TRIGGER WARNING: cheating/divorce (not between H/h)
I loved this book from beginning to end. The intense chemistry between the main characters was amazing. They were absolutely meant for each other. The way Lance loved Briyana was so touching. He was so open and upfront with his love. It was so sweet. I really enjoyed the authenticity that Alexandra brought to the book. The dialogue was contemporary and believable for each character. As a big football fan, I appreciated the accurate portrayal of the football related scenes. She used the right football terms and I felt like I was actually watching a real game unfold. This was the perfect mashup of my two favorite things: Black romance and football. I can’t wait to read the next book. I hope it’s about Snoop!
This book was so freaking good!! I give it a 4.5 due to the predictable 3rd act conflict or breakup, but at least it wasn’t belabored. This was sweet, Hilarious, steamy and just plain good. Narration was perfection, of course. I absolutely loved this NFL sports romance!
i don’t really understand the hype with this one. sure it was good, but nothing special. it was too short. not enough background was given on them being friends as kids and i would have appreciated more detail. i also might be slow but i don’t really understand how they’re engaged but live in different states half the time, part of the conflict wasn’t really resolved. overall though this was still a cute and easy read.

Okay I wanna talk about why this isn’t fine stars for me. I hate the break up and make up scenes. They irk me and even if they didn’t really break up, it was shown that way. I wanted them to be mature about the whole thing and that’s why it’s not five stars!
But this book was amazing. The whole story flowed and I loved Yani to pieces, she literally was the definition of development, she grew up during the course of this book and it was everything. Lance was so cute! He definitely fell hard and fast and I liked it. I usually don’t read friends to lovers but this was a great one plus I love a good sports romance!
Not sure how we went from Lady Hawk to Squirrel but Lady Hawk was the better moniker and well earned.
One more thing, why we never had his mothers blueberry pancakes is beyond me as they were mentioned several times.
Ok let’s get this review. Best friends who haven’t seen or spoken to each other in 8 years. She’s short and testy with him when they accidentally run into each other but it’s because she’s in her feelings about life happening( I think). They connect right back on the same friendship level naturally but they both have this newly discovered attraction to the adult that they’ve never known each other as. Everyone they know knows that these two have loved each other since forever except for them. They are just friends. Until Lance’s jump off points out the obvious that he can’t deny or explain. Lance moves on it first and Yani is ready. They have a chemistry that is palpable. At the core they are the same people but the newness is the romantic aspect. They figure it out together. And they have nasty sex, the good kind
This (sports) romance story should be added to your TBR If you love friends to lovers. This one is different because there is no one sided pining this story takes a natural progression from friends to lovers because they don’t know each other as adults so it’s new.
I enjoyed this book so much. Briyana had a string of bad luck and it unfortunately led her back to her hometown which was the last place she wanted to be. She was embarrassed that her life had not panned out like she expected. She had lost touch with her childhood best friend and just like that they were thrust back into each other's presence. Lance was living the dream life and was beyond shocked....yet grateful to have his friend back home. While he was literally living his dream he had not realized how much sweeter those accomplishments were with Yani by his side. Her support through the rough days was everything to him. It was dope to feel his love for her unfold...then how he slowly shared his feelings with her to ease her into it was considerate. All along he seemed to be scared to lose her and it made for a very good story. I definitely need a sequel.
Although emotionally captivating, this former friends > back to friends > on to lovers, component had great laugh out loud moments!
Sky Hawks football star, Lance Hawkins, and Nike sneaker designer, Yani, discover their love for each other runs deep. Especially when dealing with their crazy parents; Hawk's jealous and a tiny bit psycho, athletic trainer; as well as Yani's decision to return to Oregon to pursue the career she has always dreamed about.
Hilarious moments, great sex and the deep love they have for each other, encourages them to fight hard for their relationship!
I was told Ms Warren knows her sports and I wasn’t even the tiniest bit disappointed. Overall this was a fun and sweet read. Honestly my favorite thing was the “Squirrel” nickname. I’m more of a tightend girl first by LBs are my second fav so I really enjoyed that, and Lance was such a cinnamon roll. I loved that.
This was a good version of a former childhood friends to lovers romance! Almost had a second chance vibe to it too, and I was here for it. This had the thing I love about friends to lovers, where the MCs know each other so well (so the chemistry is great) but have to learn a new side to each other. The writing was fun and the dialogue felt natural, which can be hard to find in contemporary romance. I usually like when sports romance have elements of the sport in it too, so while I'm not a football fan at all, I enjoyed the football elements. I LOVED the way Briyana's career storyline was handled! I'm a "woman giving up her career for love" hater, so I appreciated that she got what she wanted professionally and personally. And that Lance had to get with it or get lost. That aspect made the 3rd act conflict way less aggravating for me. There was also a moment of her being happy with that I appreciated, a nice change from other times I've seen that element in romances.
I just didn't feel that spark with this one, which might be why it took me so long to read (aside from school kicking my ass ofc). I didn't think about it while I wasn't reading it, and I didn't feel a need to pick it up or keep turning the pages as I was reading. The pacing was off at times as well. Tbh, the whole second half had a weird pacing to it. It had cute moments for sure and some drama, but it also lost its momentum and started to drag a bit.
Will definitely keep reading more from Alexandra Warren, especially since I liked her writing and characters! This was a good start, and I'm excited to explore more of her work.
Give me a good friends to lovers story any day. And when you mix in sports, I’m all in. I really enjoyed the turn of events the story took. So often women are expected to put their dreams on hold to hold down the man (no judgement if it’s what you truly want). But it was great to see how a relationship can still work with a little bit of compromise so that both of you can live out your passion while loving one another. I’m glad Ahmad helped Lance see the error of his ways. Yani deserves to go after her dreams just as much as Lance. One should not cancel out the other. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out once they get married because that’s a huge game changer but for now it seems like they found a happy medium. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to be released.
This was a fun second chance, friends to lovers, sports romance. But at the same time, it felt like it was trying a liiiiiiiittle too hard to be all of those things at once. And when the book is less than 300 pages, it didn't quite do all of the tropes justice. I wanted to see more of their friendship and their history and less about their collective sneaker collections. I also felt like there were some aspects of the story (namely, ) that get brought up and then dropped, never to be mentioned again.
Don't get me wrong, I did like the romance! But there were other aspects of it that didn't quite work for me. And there were certain plotlines that left me with more questions than answers.
Wooww! What a story. What a beautifully, well executed story. I loved, loved loovedd the Hero and Heroine. Alexandra did such a beautiful job delivering this story. I felt everything in these pages. From the couple's love for one another, to their love for shoes, oh and the hurt when Lance lost the playoffs. The details and the descriptions of the the scenes felt like I was there. This is one of my favorite books so far by Ms. Warren. I loved every minute of it. Definitely read this. You won't be sorry!!
Ms. Warren knows how to deliver a sports romance book! 👏🏾this book literally has me so hyped for football season to come. This was a beautiful friends to lovers story. I loved Hawk and how he was a leader on and off the field. Briyanna struggled with communication some and she had her reasons but with Hawk she was able to freely be herself. The chemistry between the two couldn’t be mistaken, with 8 years apart. I couldn’t tell because they literally were still in sync with each other. Very good book!
I enjoyed getting to know Lance and Briyana. They were a very low key friendship turned couple. I was nervous about the outcome of Bri's parents but all's well that ends well. But Bri's dad is a mess. Very cute story.
Friends to lovers is not my favorite, and they definitely had some communication issues, but I was SO invested. They had my emotions going all over the place.
I got this book in a ReadHer box and I couldn't have been happier. The start of this book was the most hilarious thing I've read in a minute and the rest of the book is *chefs kiss*. I will be looking into all the backlist titles :)
I believe this was my first book by this author and I’m not sure if I’ll read another one. Maybe later. I gave it 2 stars because I read it in a day and it held my attention. When Yani decided to make that decision without Lance the whole book was ruined. That was the most selfish thing I have ever read in my history of reading. She had already hurt him and basically did the same thing again. Then she left without even telling him. She used him for his place to live IMO. Made real life plans with him and it just seemed so easy to pack up and move on. He wasn’t childish in his feelings of being pissed. I’d have been pissed too. He explained how hurt he was the first time he left. The way she behaves in this book made me feel like if he had never went to help her dad with the groceries she never would have approached him. In my honest opinion I feel like Raquel went harder for him than Yani did. That’s who he should have ended up with. At least she went to his games. So much of this book was unnecessary and especially the drama between her parents and the not pregnant test result was just thrown in there for what? It was a no for me!
This book was cute and Briyana and Lance had some good banter and chemistry. The trope wasn’t really second chance romance more of estranged childhood friends to lovers, which was just not my fav trope. I was missing the mutual pining over each other. They didn’t really think about each other much in their years spent apart, rather when Bri came back they both thought “oh they got hot, I see them differently”. Which is cute, but give me some angsttttt. Lance being the only one to call her Yani was so cute, I love a good nickname. Overall, super short, cute read that was easy to fly through on my road trip.
I understand this was a sports romance and that is actually one of my favorites but the sports stuff was overkill it didnt flow naturally and it made for a tough read for me and I ended up skipping a lot of pages.
I love me a good sports novel and this one didn’t disappoint! If Lance was real and I was single, he could definitely get it! I loved everything about the second chance love he and Bri shared. I need more of them, hopefully in book two 😉.
Ms. Warren done started something with this book! Lance AKA Hawk unexpectedly welcomes his childhood best friend back home. Briyana returns to Houston defeated, hurt, and a bit lost. Will reconnecting with her past be what Bri needs?
