Hair-raising Western

This story starts out a little slow in the beginning, but gets very
stimulating and lively as the Gambler wins a small ranch in a spirited poker game. He finds out that he has blood thirsty outlaws as his neighbors. His trail takes a romantic turn with a widow, it changes his life. This book is a real page turner. I highly recommend it.

Not His Best

Sadly, this is not Mr. Lane’s best although many others are. Not until nearly halfway into the story is any tension introduced and even then it is thin and very predictable. Try some of his other stories for ones you’ll like better.

Amos Riordan is 12 years old when his father is killed in the Civil War his mother dies a year later. While his sister's move in with his grandparents Amos heads to Saint Louis to live with his Uncle Red a Gambler who teaches Amos everything he knows. Amos is good (very good) when he wins a ranch in a poker game his life takes a major change.

Lane is by far the best writer of this genre. I've read every author out there and for my humble opinion he is the best. As an old Florida cracker I wish he was knowledgeable about Florida and could write about our great history. If Mr lane would ever have the want to, I'd love to give him some background. Enjoyed Gambling Man

Hate to see a young man trained to be a gambler but if it is going to happen, this is the right way. A gambling man with principles and morals! Glad he could turn this life off when he met the right woman. I have a good laugh at how fast Lane’s characters fall in love. He writes on the basis of “love at first sight” or “when you know it, you know it.” Again love his thorough and Long epilogues. Some authors drop you short.

This book is filled with some good characters & interesting locations with fantastic descriptions about the locale right along with the food. You can almost taste some of it. I have all of R O Lane’s book and each one is better that the last and I found that you are always part of the books which is what he does. It tells the life story of a gambler and all the things that he faces in that life. He starts by loosing his parents and living with his uncle who taught him to be the best at his chosen field of gambling.

Good book

When Amos lost both of his parents, his younger3 Sisters went to live with their grandparents and at age 13 he chose to go live with his uncle. His uncle was a gambler and taught him to play poker. Very interesting and enjoyed the book. R.O. Lane is one of the authors I watch for his newest book.

If you’ve not read Lane’s work before now you are so lucky. He’s written hundreds, thousands of terrific books of the old West. All waiting for you.
Well written, nice plot lines, sturdy characters, interesting places and history tidbits. What’s not to like. Thanks Mr. Lane for another fun read.

It seems like each and every single Book that I read by this Author they keep getting better and better, if that is possible. I have really enjoyed this storyline most of all of the Author's Books so far. Super sweet romance and wonderful ending. Lots of action and suspense that kept me glued to each page making impossible to put down!!

This is a good read. Farming is a gamble so is ranching. Being well taught : and trained. Amos was prepared for success. Gambling is a job. A career. And he worked it just so.

Amos is an excellent gambler. He finally sets out to explore the west, wins a ranch, meets and marries his neighbor, rescues her from his other neighbor, who is an outlaw, and returns to the ranch. Much action in his western adventure.

Wow, such a life.

I like that the main character did not let the murderer win in the end: that he went after his wife; that he loved his family fiercely (immediate and extended); and that he was never a cheat. Highly recommended for all readers.

Good tale about gambler changing his goals!

Youngest riverboat gambler at one time bit very successful. Winning a ranch changes his perspective. Land's done it again in style!
