I dont like the decoders. They have been pissing me off for 2 days. I might quit the book for that reason alone since the instructions specifically tell me not to skip ahead and if i cant do the task to pass it along to someone who can.
When I first laid my hands on this book I was extremely excited about it: another book to keep me occupied/give ideas! Another that I don't necessarily have to read from cover to cover, but can scribble in too (I happen to enjoy that kind of thing). The problem with the book is that Smith draws you in and then drags out the "suspense" to the extent that you KNOW you're being conned into something! It's all well and good to try and copy a Narnia idea, with childhood fantasies and the like, but as an adult, there are certain limits to what you can do. Rather than encourage me to write, this book actually put me off. It consists of things I fantasised about when I was a teenager (when I created a club, along with badges, secret signs, the lot) - that's all passé! Perhaps Smith thinks it's possible to recreate that kind of thing and I agree there was the occasional spark of delight in these pages, but not enough for me to follow through with it. It's an almost Julia Cameron-make-believe fallen flat. That said, here's my park bench (right at the beginning of the book):
What a fun book, and creative on so many levels. You literally go through the book doing tasks to help "finish the book". At first I wondered where it would all lead, but all good things must come to an end. And it did. It took a while to get there, and some serious work on my part, but it was worth it. I learned a lot about exploration and collecting and did some ponderous thinking throughout the book. I really love books that challenge you or your mind. I don't think everyone will have the patience to actually go through the book and do every task, some do seem tedious, but they are there for a reason.
Originally introduced to Keri Smith by a colleague, I struck upon this particular title and ordered it in hopes of encouraging my once enthusiastic writer of a middle son.
"I hate writing," he announced a few weeks ago in the car.
"Wha??" I asked while skillfully maneuvering the car away from the guardrail.
"Yeah. My teacher makes us follow all sorts of rules and we HAVE to brainstorm a certain way. If we don't, then she gets mad. I used to be able to fill pages and pages up with my stories. Now I hate it."
So I ordered Finish This Book with hopes of filling both my son's as well as my student's writing buckets.
Now, after reading Finish This Book, I can see the value of Smith's creative homage in my middle son's life this summer. For my own students, though, I would pick and choose carefully.
Some plums for middle grade writers: -we are skilled observers (look at and document the world as such): use old photos as a warm up activity -instruction manual: have an old, beat up journal with that title and an emblem of a tree as mini lesson spring boards from me -curiosity is key to being a skilled writer: gift wrapped box as writing warm up
As a parent, I enjoyed the naturalistic approach Finish This Book took. As a teacher, I plan on revisiting it again with sticky notes in hand.
It's a quick read worthy of any ELA teacher's attention this summer. Want to rejuvenate your writing instruction or think about showing who we are as writers to reluctant ones?
I randomly found this book while I was at Barnes & Noble and immediately got excited. I thought I had found a unique and fun interactive book. As most people would be I considered skipping to the end of the book and seeing what the surprise was, but instead decided to buy it and do it right. I should have just skipped to the end. The books builds you up for a mystery that isn't there, in the end it just promotes tree hugging and making a fort in the woods. Sure I see the goal in maybe tryng to bring the reader back to their childhood and imagination, but I think it was utterly lacking.
Highly recommendable. Smith will make you feel like a real secret agent trying to solve a mystery, but not until you finish your training! I haven't finished it yet but I'm looking forward to it.
(Trees of North America by Brockman and Marrilees, Tom Brown's Field Guide to Living with the Earth, Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature by Young, Haas and McGown, Mountaineering Essays by Muir, Tracking and Trailing by Thompson, and the Norton Book of Nature Writing.)
it was a really fun book and i liked most of the instructions but some really gave me a headache😭 I loved the end and altogether i totally recommend it
I thought I'm old enough so I should take myself seriously. Happy this book proved me wrong. It's a great way to recover my imagination and relief stress
at the start of this book i thought it is serious. only to discover that it's a kids book. but to be honest i really enjoyed it. i haven't finished it all but it's a funny book. i wish i could give it to my child someday. a good usage of time for a kid. ;) i enjoyed being a 5 years old kid once more at this age ;)
I've been working on this book for a couple years, fitting in tasks when the time is right. This is not meant to be a pick-and-choose task book, but a sequence. I'm sure I'll have more fun as I continue. :)
Sweet and fun. I'm not sure I'm the intended audience, but I'm thinking of attempting to build my own secret playhouse anyway. (In other words, this is something plenty of adults could learn to love.)
To enjoy this book's potential, you should probably be a kid who lives by a forest. Not me. This was still fun though, and I did enjoy some of the training.
I would enjoy the book if the end of the clue actually worked. LFpupblishingco.com website doesn't work anymore and I can't finish that page. bummer :/
This book has a promising premise: drawing the reader in through a mystery. However, the reveal of the instruction manual is less than exciting and does not draw you in further. I did finish the book however, many of the activities required too much effort to complete. I did not feel write littering (leaving a note in a tree) or drawing faces on things in a park so I was left to do this at home. Also, if you want to complete a book on your own, this is not the book for you as it makes you interview others and entertain the prospect of sharing you 'secret club' with others. I wish it has more decoding activities, that the secret society was more interesting, and that the activities involved were more thought out and linked to the rest of the book. For example, it required you to gather a notebook, though this was unnecessary as you could take notes in the book itself. It also made you post photos of yourself in disguise which can make you feel ridiculous and is a waste of the material it takes to print the photos. I did like the decoding though.
Spoiler: this book (literally) smacked me in the head
You know, this book could have been amazing if it was marketed correctly. I don't know what I was expecting and, as it tells you not to proceed unless you have completed the activities, I was ready to be surprised. But this is everything but a book you need to complete. It's a guide to exploring nature at best. Which is not a bad thing... but not what I was promised. I was going to give it three stars, then remembered that it quite literally physically hurt me. When I was still trying to do the activities, it suggested to do everyday activites with your eyes closed. I was like, why not? I went to get a sweater in the closet, I reached out with my hands and figured that the closet door was closed. It wasn't, I just had one arm one each side of it. I walked straight into it and banged by head. Is it my fault? Yes, but imagine telling people why I had this massive bruise on my forehead.
Igual, me divertí.
I started this adventure book when I was 14, and having not touched it for almost 7 years I realised it was time to tear out the pages I had finished and throw the rest of the pages in the recycle bin.
Nothing against the book, I'm sure there is a large audience for it, I'm just not part of it.
