Hunter Killer #7

Silent Running

Rate this book
The axis of global power has shifted.
Is it too late to restore the balance?

Biding its time for decades, China has patiently lain in wait for its chance at global dominance. Long content to needle the West while secretly amassing intelligence, technology, and resources, the war chest is now full and the gears of the colossus are grinding into motion.

New arenas of modern battle emerge as China wages an all-out cyber assault on the West. And the more familiar tactics of brute strength play out in its bold attacks against sovereign neighbors. The scope of the Chinese menace draws the US into the melee.

But then US Naval Intelligence learns the true reasons for, and the vulnerabilities of, the Middle Kingdom’s aggression.

Will the men, women, and submarines of America's Silent Service be able to hang on to a tenuous world order...or have the scales already tipped too far?

Former US Navy submarine commander George Wallace and award winning author Don Keith are the authors of the novel HUNTER KILLER, now a major motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman.

Silent Running is the seventh book in the Hunter Killer Series.

Born and raised in Eastern Ohio, Commander Wallace received his commission in the US Navy and a degree in engineering from The Ohio State University. After the obligatory and memorable interview with Admiral Rickover, he was accepted into the nuclear power and submarine communities. He served on two of Admiral Rickover’s famous “Forty One for Freedom”, the USS John Adams SSBN 620 and the USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN 624, during which time he made nine one-hundred-day deterrent patrols through the height of the Cold War.

Commander Wallace served as Executive Officer on the Sturgeon class nuclear attack submarine Spadefish. Spadefish and all her sisters were decommissioned during the downsizing that occurred in the 1990′s. The passing of that great ship served as the inspiration for “Final Bearing.”

Commander Wallace then commanded the Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine USS Houston SSN 713 from February 1990 to August 1992. During this tour of duty he worked extensively with the SEAL community developing SEAL/submarine tactics. Under his command, the Houston was awarded the CIA Meritorious Unit Citation.

Commander George Wallace retired to the civilian business world in 1995, after twenty-two years of service on nuclear submarines.

Commander Wallace lives with his wife, Penny, in Alexandria, Virginia.

The series is definitely getting better - I think this one was the best so far from the point of view that the plot was believable and the interplay between all of the characters seemed realistic. Hope the next one (Snapshot) is just as good!

In the near future, this is a likely scenario. There are three prongs to China's ambitions which the authors got right.
1. Taiwan. Always Taiwan. Like waving a flag in front of a bull. In terms of techno-thrillers, this might cross from fiction to fact. When I went to northern China in 2009 to teach English, the question in the car on the way to the school after: "How was your flight?" and "Are you hungry?" was "So, what do you think about Taiwan?"
2. South China Seas becomes the South China Lake. Again, clearly on the map. The question is what will the other countries do? Vietnam will usually stand up to China. Philippines would like to stand up to China, but they don't have the hardware (yet). India will, if only because Pakistan is a Chinese ally, and India's production potential can and may match China.
3. Replace the USD with the RMB as the Global Reserve Currency and attack the western markets. This threat, especially since it's cyber and economic warfare, is the least understood and the most potentially devastating. You might wake up tomorrow morning with the stock markets crashed and everything wiped out without a single shot fired.

Scary thought. The question is not just "Can the militaries US, AU, Japan, South Korea, India, and the Philippines stand up to China?" It's better asked: "At what point do you go to war and how much damage can you inflict before the world economy tanks?"

Looks like I've been caught by the curse again of paying any attention to the rating on goodreads for military techno thrillers.
Although the premise of the book is solid, it's let down heavily by a common theme in the genre:

1. Assuming the any of Americas opponents in a conflict are incompetent and incapable, and would roll over and have their bellies tickled at the first sign of adversity.

2. Padding the book, instead of 'bob ate a sandwich', it becomes 'bob ate a sandwich that was made 3hr 42mins ago by a guy called fred, and he used big red tomatoes and fresh ham on very white bread and it had a lovely wrapper', in areas that don't need padding.

Also, some of the story and plot are massively let down by a random love interest that just doesn't work. Then, don't get me started on the data centre breach part. This was the equivalent of going on for 20 pages about a car engine being broken and it needs to have a complicated fix, only to be resolved by a one liner saying that rubbing some honey on the steering wheel fixed it, utter nonsense, it's really bad that part.

I've given the book a 2 stars, but it could have easily got a 1.

I received an advanced copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Once again it is the United States Navy versus the world. Or just some pesky nation-state out to rule the world. The plot moves very quickly and is easy to follow. The main batch of characters flow from one novel to the next, aging and coming up in rank. The new military toys mentioned in every new novel are well detailed and inspiring. The techno-babble is kept to a minimum and easy to understand. The scenery detail really puts the reader in the scene being portrayed. The suspense and action increase from chapter to chapter. Making a very enjoyable read, cannot wait to read more from this team of authors.

An outstanding novel crafted around the U.S. vs China on top of and under the water. Frightening scenarios that are all too real and replay actions that mime stories we read about in the news today. China taking land and sea claiming they belong to them. No regard for human rights or life. And a weak U.S. president making a deal to keep himself in office even if he has to get in bed with the devil.
Heart-pounding scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat and unwilling to close the book because you just have to find out what comes next. Highly Recommended.

A really great thriller in the Clancy vein. I have read all the prior books in this series and if anything they keep getting better. A very plausible scenario is the plot of this book and the author does a really nice job of keeping the action level high and the plot moving. You will not be able to put this book down. I can't wait for the next book in this series. These books have multiple levels of storyline and when it all comes together, you realize you are reading one of the better books you will read this year.

Liked it, however it seemed rushed

A neat tale with lots of action, however,
1. No timeline and that made it impossible to follow at times;
2. Wish there were charts and maps to follow the action, and
3. What happened to the Canaberra and Louise?
My favorite action/thriller books follow Ben Porter, an intrepid average man solving problems and riddles, like, remember Colombo? Find him in False Assurances, Threat Bias, Subversive Addiction and Vital Deception!

Considerable changes took place since the television series Victory At Sea. Now I read about a technical, highly skilled military organized through cyberspace. An important part of this exciting narrative comes with the international submarine rescue organization. Only recently I met someone who works with this worldwide, amazing effort. This book's authors illustrate how submarine rescue works, even in the most dire of circumstances. Overall, the story line kept me engaged and informed.

Superb series of thrillers.

Yet again the authors take you through a journey of intrigue and mystery, the main characters are truly unique and they give the reader an insight into the world 🌎of warfare both above and below the seas, that could very well happen to the world today because of politicians who have a craving for power and are determined to fulfil their ambitions by force.

Mediocre at best. US Navy Sub force always wins. At this point, I'm reading because I want to finish the series. And for the record, with almost 20 years in Naval Intel, I have not once seen a senior officer from outside of intel get promoted into a flag intel job. A sub driver would never be qualified to jump right into intel and be promoted to head of Navy Intel. I guess they author is alittle too much in love with the Silent Service. That adds to my general dislike of this series.

I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. This was a great book and is part of a series. I do however believe it could be read by itself as a stand alone book. The plot weaves around the main characters and the great action sequences. It does keep the reader involved until the great ending. It does leave an opening for a follow on book that I will want to read.

Silent Running

A well written thriller that leaves you wanting more. It could be real live and not just fiction. The shame is that this could be taken out of the headlines! And as it gets wrapped up in the end it instills no faith in leaders as the fictional leaders seem to be so close to the real leaders.

A very intriguing story of war planning and counter planning.

The author has written a story of a power hungry leader is playing to take control of all the islands around China and the demolish the world economy system. A story full of suspense, intriguing and action that will keep you guessing and entertained.

A thrilling techno book that has all the possibilities of being real life. The action is fast and furious and the characters are well done. The story will keep your attention and you won’t want to put this down. A great read.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

First, thanks for the ARC.
If your looking for a fast-paced novel, a la Cussler, here’s your book. The book has the same qualities as “The Hunt for Red October”. Beyond the techno thriller characteristics, the plausibility and prediction of operations is outstanding. Keep up the great work

I believe I’m quickly becoming addicted to not just reading the Wallace & Keith Hunter Killer series, but to listening to each of the books as well. I received a review copy of the audiobook from the publisher and am pleased to report the listening experience was awesome. Sure, I know what was coming but that didn’t dull the story in the least in fact, knowing where the story was going as well as each of the characters only made the listening experience better. Kind of like hanging out with old friends and telling “sea-stories.” Corey M. Snow’s narration took the story to the next level – I’m firmly convinced he is the only person who should narrate this series. I’m including my original review from the e-book below as it is more story related.

After reading Silent Running the seventh book in the Hunter Killer series I can say unequivocally that I’m addicted to the series. However, unlike any other addictions, I’ll patiently wait on my next Wallace and Keith fix, so please write faster guys.

Once again, these authors have crafted a story that at times feels like it was pulled right from the news headlines and at other times feels like a portent of the future – either one is frightening to say the least. The action and intrigue in this story never let up, and the technology is not just believable, I’m quite certain after a bit of research most of it currently exists. I don’t just know the characters in these stories, they have begun to feel like shipmates I’ve served with for a full career. If you enjoy military thrillers and are new to Wallace and Keith’s work, you really need to start at the beginning of this series so that you can really get to know the characters and the situation they encounter. If you are already a fan, this is a must-read installment. I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and chose to provide my review.
