MP3 CD Format Ever since we found the two Outcasts, it's been my goal to get them to join our beach tribe. Handsome, impossible Juth has resisted all my efforts to recruit him and his small son. He's made it very clear that he doesn't belong with us.
But when I'm trapped at Juth's side as the beach is invaded by monsters, everything changes. He talks to me instead of pointedly ignoring me. We become friends. Heck, we even share a few stolen kisses. And when the rescue party arrives, he announces to everyone that I'm his mate and he's joining the tribe.
Which is great except . . . I never agreed to anything? If I point out I'm not Juth's mate, he'll pack up and leave with his son. He sure won't give me more of those toe-curling kisses or touch me like it's the greatest thing that's ever happened to him.
So . . . I guess I'm mated? Because I'm not sure I can give any of that--or Juth--up.
Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.
Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)
I love this series! I loved Juth, he was breaking my heart. Sweet little Pak, was melting my heart. They both needed a little TLC, and a lot of acceptance. Steff had a sweet and compassionate heart that ended up being just what they needed. Juth and Pak ended up being what Steff didn't even realize she needed too. This one's for the outcasts and unwanteds, and to finding that special someone to love you unconditionally. I really liked this one, and can't wait for Sam's secrets to be revealed in the next one.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️💖 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍 Character development: 😠😚😁☺️🥰 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Dual Narration
The heroine:Steph - She is the therapist of the group. She loves hearing what people are thinking and finding out what makes them tick. She wants the outcasts to join their group on the icehome beach, and she leaves them things on a rock far down the beach every day for them, though they rarely take the offerings of furs, jerky and clothing.
The Hero:Juth - he and young Pak are the only two left in the outcast clan after the volcano on the island where they used to live. There were three clans on the island, Strong Arm, Tall Horn and Shadow Cat. Any child born that didn’t have the distinguishing features of any of those clans was made an outcast.
The Story: After the volcano destroyed the island and the remaining clan members and human women sett up the icehome clan on the beach, which was a merging of all the clans. However, the outcasts were still on their own. Though since the human women found out about the outcasts, they invited them to join, but Juth doesn’t want to become soft so he and Pak stay as outcasts.
This one is much different than the other books I have read so far. There are some strange happenings at the beach and some kind of sea monsters that come out of the ocean. It is all very exciting. They are big enough to throw the huts around like they are sticks. Steph is with Juth and Pax when it happens so is separated from the rest of her clan. The monster is the size of a city block, it is described so well. Very unusual and scary at first.
I liked this story and the romance between Juth and Steph. I also loved little Pak, he was a cutie and there were some great supporting characters in this one. Daisy reminded me of a social media influencer who cares way to much about how she looks, and Devi with her love of the sea creatures and her passion for discovery. I loved the fact that the huge creatures were so reminiscent of sea turtles. But most of all I loved the outcasts finding a home. I think this was my favorite story in this series.
This book was told in dual points of view via dual narration, and was narrated by Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe. These two have narrated all of the Icehome books and do a great job and both do multiple voices so well. I love this series and its connection to the Ice Planet Barbarians. Personally if I had the choice, I would rather live at the beach even on an ice planet, so would pick their community of the two. Plus I love that there are different types of male aliens, some with large horns, some with four arms and more. The four armed aliens sound great to me.
This series is starting to bum me out.... The earlier books were much better.
I found Steph pretty annoying, and Juth was okay but not swoon-worthy by any stretch. The best part of this story is Pak, the little boy that Juth essentially adopted when he was orphaned.
Quick summary: Juth is from the outcast clan on the islands that was made up of those whose features were not prominent enough to allow them to join the other clans, so they were sent away and not allowed to speak to anyone not in the outcast clan, make fire, have pleasure mates.... They were treated pretty badly. We first met Juth when he abducted Raven as a way to gain access to supplies for himself and his charge Pak.
Steph is one of the human women found in stasis that seems to think taking a handful of psych courses makes her the designated counselor on the island, so she basically annoys everyone with her "insights" whether they are interested in her perspective or not. She is intrigued by Juth and wants him to join the rest of the group bc the island clan structure is no longer, and Pak can now grow up with other kids and be accepted.
Steph assumes the duty of gathering items and taking them to where Juth and Pak sometimes check to see what has been left for them. They usually only take what they absolutely need, and Steph feels it is her job to convince them that they are part of the community now and should not only take more than that, but also be a member living amongst the remaining population.
Then there are giant vegetarian octopus turtles that come on shore to lay eggs. You read that right.
This one just didn't do it for me, and I hope that things pick back up bc I have enjoyed having these books to turn to when I need a guilty pleasure, palate-cleaner.
Plot --- 2/5 Main Characters --- 2.5/5 Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5 Steam Level* --- 3.5/5 Violence --- nothing overly graphic or major Language --- yes! (lots of f-bombs and c-bombs) POV --- Dual
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Somewhere between a 3.5 & a 4 star. This is a fun one in terms of moving the macro plot forward! We get a big *shake up* in our tribe's circumstances, and along the way, we get a very sweet love story between Steph & Juth. Thematically, we get an exploration of how people with trust and control issues work through their fears in the context of a community, and in terms of "in the furs," let's just say our boy Juth is packing with the girth apparently. o_0 Miss Ruby always makes me laugh and god I just love these characters, no matter what they get up to
I’m so happy to be back on Not Hoth! These books are best read in a binge so am I sad that I have to wait for months between each of the Icehome books and potentially years for gen 2 of IPB/Icehome? Yes. But I adore Ruby and I will wait forever for more stories.
Something I said on TikTok is that even though every book may not be a 5/5, it’s a 5/5 reading experience because they’re just so fun. While the planet is a hunter gatherer society covered in ice, its very idyllic, down to the “scary” alien men who turn into big softies over their woman/children. Also they’re shaped like rabbit vibes and love eating kitty.
I was excited for this book, because Steph shares my name (duh), and I could have sworn in previous books she was identified as Filipino? But then in this book she’s described as a redhead, even though she’s brunette on the cover. Also, I was curious about Juth and Pak, who we met in Raven’s book and were outcasts on their old island.
There was a bit of a language barrier in this book, which I never love, but it was one sided as Steph was able to understand them with her translator but they couldn’t understand her at first.
I thought the relationship between Steph/Juth was so adorable - his hesitation and intense longing and bewilderment that he was interested in him. And Steph’s dirty talk? Damn.
I am so excited for future books and where the rest of the Icehome series is going, as there was a pretty big “world building” plot twist in this book. I have to admit I still don’t like Daisy as a character, I’m super curious about who Sam will be paired up with (her book is up next!), and I can’t wait for O’jek and R’jaal’s books!
Ruby Dixon wrote a lot of books about blue aliens (and now they're famous! That makes me happy, because I love alien romance and the genre deserves all the hype it's now finally getting).
First, there is the Ice Planet Barbarians series, which has a total of 22 books. I read all of them. Some were great, others, not so much.
There is a spin-off series, IceHome, starting with Lauren's Barbarian, of which this is book number 14. So, in total, we have 36 (!!) books that have the same premise:
Blue Snow Hunter-Gatherer Tarzan meets Human Jane.
Of course I am brushing over the exceptions to this rule: Barbarian's Choice and Barbarian's Hope from the Ice Planet Barbarians series feature blue, alien heroines.
However, the fact that these two series feature the same setting (Not-Hoth, AKA IceHome) and the same tribe, means we not only get the same premise over and over again, but also the same faces. That's good, because it's like watching a very long romantic soap opera with characters you adore and some you hate, and the respective hero and heroine of each book just put up the framework to show the bigger picture and story.
Sometimes, nothing big happens to the tribe, and only the couple get there moment to shine, with some cameos. But sometimes, something big happens: a huge monster appears, or a volcano erupts, or an earthquake destroys everything.
Steph's Outcast is one of the books in both series where BIG STUFF happens in the tribe, so it's interesting, but Juth and Steph themselves just feel like background noise.
I will explain:
I was invested in Juth and his adopted son, Pak, from the moment they appeared for the first time back in Raven's Return (I believe that was their first appearance). They are of clan "Outcast", which means they are treated like Untouchable Scum That No One Shall Adress.
It's awful! Because Juth and Pak are Outcast, that is, some of their features do not fit with one of the four former island clans (Tall Horn, Shadow Cat, Strong Arm and the now-gone Whatever Tails), they were seen as undeserving of a respectful name. Respectful names kind of jumble the first syllable of a name, such as Bridget -> B'shit, or Veronica -> V'ronca. That's why the islanders have names like O'jek, I'rek, T'chai etc. But Juth and Pak aren't known as J'th and P'k, because they are considered lesser.
That's a big thing. And although it makes sense that Steph and the other humans do not care about such things and even condemn it as unfair segregation, I thought that there was not enough discussion going on for Tall Horn, Shadow Cat and Strong Arm about what they did wrong and why.
Even though one of the islanders turns out to be Juth's brother, he just apologizes and shows a bare minimum of contrition and that's it.
I mean ... what?
You can't deny a whole group of people their rights to a "real" name, a mate, love and hunting rights and even making fire and wearing clothes and treat them like scum of the earth until one day you just say sorry and everything's good. That is not how segregation and xenophobia is reversed into normalcy.
Anyway. I thought the whole matter of clan Outcast was handled poorly. Juth and Pak both deserved MAJOR grovelling from the clans.
Also, the romance was pretty tepid and uninteresting compared to what was happening in the background.
Now, the remaining ladies will be paired up with the remaining blue aliens. My guess list:
Sam and O'Jek (even though O'Jek is making eyes at Daisy and acting as her butler, I think this grumpy asshole will probably be paired with Sam after finding out her secret) Flor and I'rek (I don't know anything about either, so ...) Tia and Sessah (lol those two will be a mess - also Tia is kinda young still) Daisy and R'Jaal (it's cruel but I think the guy who desperately wants a mate will have to wait the longest for one and then get the woman who thinks her entire personality is worthless and only her prettiness matters)
I didn't mind a lot of this book. Both main characters were alright, and there were somewhat interesting things happening on the Ice Planet. But I didn't like how negatively the fmc thought of herself, and the story didn't hold my interest very well.
Honestly, I think I need to take a break from the series, because they're all running together for me.
4.5 ⭐️ I’ve been slowly rereading Ruby’s books cuz they are comfort reads for me and this is one of my fave Icehome ones. Steph is so patient, analytical, and the ultimate people pleaser. She sucks at setting boundaries and communicating her own needs. Juth has had a shitty life, but is devoted to his adoptive son and does whatever he can to keep him safe. They were so precious together, especially because they were able to see and meet one another’s needs.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: broken bone, animal attack that involves risk to children and injuries of adults, social isolation involving children and adults, discussion of child abandonment, mentions of death of parents, starvation, internalized fat phobia, mentions of homophobia, mentions of volcanic eruption and deaths from it, brief mentions of abduction, risk of hypothermia
Finally got my single alien dad romance 👽🤍 and Juth isn’t even actually related to Pak, a fun twist that I enjoy for single parent romances. Pak was adorable and it was cute watching him get to finally experience what a true family and tribe should be like and just get to be a kid and have friends and toys and a maternal figure. Juth did his best to raise and love him, but the Outcast clan and their rules were pretty strict and made for a hard life. I liked the weird giant sea monsters, the misunderstandings and the instafamily that Pak, Juth and Steph made. Overall one of the better IH/IPB books I’ve read recently and it’s probably just because of the trope honestly, but it was nice to have something truly different when all these books at this point pretty much follow the same script.
Oh, MAN. I adore spending time on Not-Hoth/Icehome. This place is a vaguely dangerous, icy place and it's SO DARN FUN THERE. And the aliens who populate this planet? They're pretty awesome in their own blue, hunky way.
This time around we have Steph and Juth. An unexpected migration puts the beach camp in a little bit of a pickle and Steph and Juth have to spend time to together. Quality time. With Juth's son, sure, but they get to know one another (at least as much as two people can get to know one another when only one can understand the other). Then Juth gets bopped by the translator fairy and suddenly Steph is mated to the big guy and she's...kind of okay with that.
That sounds kind of complicated, but it's not. Steph starts out trying to draw Juth and Pak into the tribe and along the way she really starts to like the way he looks out for her. More than that, she likes him. Just because. She also likes his son and how good a father he is. Basically she likes the entire package. The ENTIRE package. (What? These guys like to be naked and Steph found it hard not to notice that even when she was trying not to.)
Anywho. A little danger, a lot of steamy kisses, a wee bit of a misunderstanding, and a kind of big upheaval for the residents of the beach tribe. They're hardy folk, though, and they got through it. Things might have been tough for a while, but they made it work. *thumbs up*
Steph and Juth’s story! Juth and his young son Pak are the last of the “outcast clan” from the island. They showed up in Raven’s story and started taking items and food sometimes when it was left out for them. However, being outcast clan they didn’t think they could talk to or really accept help from the main tribe. Steph didn’t give up on them and made a big effort to try and get them to talk to her and hopefully join the tribe. Well, after huge monsters came up and decided to lay eggs on their beach, they were pushed into making a decision. Luckily for them, it does end up working out per usual in these books. It is a super sweet story and I love how good of a Dad Juth was for Pak, how Steph became his Mom and how Juth started to even form a real relationship with his brother who never acknowledged him before.
Holy Giant Crustacean!!! Another hit in the Icehome series. Honestly I really loved this one and I loved that Ruby took some creative freedoms. I was all about it. Not only do we have a tribal outcast with a son as the hero we also have Steph who is constantly wanting to help and understand everything including peoples thoughts and feelings. Steph has been trying for months to welcome the father and son with a basket of goodies. The time has finally come for them to come out of hiding and Steph is not above bribing them with food and toys. Not only that but Steph is also bisexual, something that's a new twist to the series. I hope we get more of these 'twists' as the series continues because so far RD has been spot on in creating realistic and vulnerable characters who are easy to relate to and possibly even covet; if of course living on an ice planet with the man of your dreams and his spur is something you'd even like lol. While there was another misunderstanding between the two (something that's been done many a times) I still really loved the dynamic and growing connection between them. Oh yeah and the giant Godzilla sized crustaceans that may or may not have taken over the beach to lay their eggs like sea turtles on our planet. It was so crazy, scary and of course Awesome! We also got teased a bit more on the remaining sakhui and women on the beach. Time is passing more quickly on the beach and resonance is happening less and less so I cannot wait to see who ends up with who and how the heck they get together in the first place. May this series never end!!
I think what made this one so good was Steph and her wanting to help the Outcast and then later getting the others to see that Juth wasn't a bad person, being Outcast, just different. While she might not have wanted to start something romantic with Juth, feelings grew between them. I liked that and hated how that was turned against them, was glad that Steph got a talking to about not using Earth judgement, it didn't work here.
The drama at the beach with the creatures was crazy! I was glad that everyone made it through, but the loss of home was great.
I did like how this one ended, was very good for Juth and Steph.
Steph’s Outcast is book 14 (according to KU) in the Ice Home series! And in this one we follow Steph and Juth!
Juth and his adopted son Pak we first met in the first book of this series. Steph has been working as a therapist to the group, she studied psychology and was going to open a therapy practice back on earth before being kidnapped. So now she’s been on Not Hoth for a year and is just awaiting resonance. She ends up being the one from the group to take food/meals/supplies to the outcasts and that is how she meets Juth. There is a communication barrier, while she’s able to understand him, he isn’t able to understand her at first. With this read we also get the first openly bi character in the series. I loved this sweet romance and seeing Juth be a single dad to his adopted son! Juth thinks he and Steph are mates and she doesn’t correct him at first which causes some issues. Just overall cute and sweet and what I was in the mood for when jumping back into this series!
I’d been curious about Steff and Juth because he was clinging to his Outcast ways but man I really enjoyed this entry in the Icehome series. He was wonderfully sweet and long suffering yet so caring for his son Pak. Steff was earnest, so eager to be helpful and kinda nosy but very relatable. I also liked seeing Ms. Dixon introduce a bisexual character into this incredibly heterosexual series. Was it a little messy when it came to Steff’s crush? Yep and waaaaay too many people know about it. Did I still like seeing these characters’ found family grow? Absolutely. I can’t give up this crackilicious series and so don’t want to. If you’re an SFR fan with an emphasis on the romance, you may enjoy this as much as I did.
how is it possible that after a ridiculous amount of books in the series, RD still writes amazing romances?
- it’s shocking that im able to give 5 stars to the 14th book in the series. amazing really. you’d think by now it would be difficult to tell new stories, but she does it, and does it well.
- i like the introduction to a new type of romance. one where the H claims the h as his mate and she just goes w. it. so fun!!!!
- when will R’jaal get his mate , i’ve been waiting, and waiting, and i want pure happiness for him
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE GOT 'EM: A QUEER MAIN CHARACTER IN AN IPB BOOK.
They (me) said it couldn't be done. They (me) said this was the straightest alien horndog series ever made. But they (me) were WRONG.
Ruby, my apologies for doubting you. Granted, it took over thirty books to get here and the implication that the kidnapper aliens only go after straight people is kind of insane, but I'll take what I can get.
Which brings us to bisexual queen Steph. Remember a few books ago when I said these women needed a therapist to crash land on their planet? Apparently that was prophetic because Steph is indeed a therapist--or, at least, she was almost done with a psych degree on Earth, but close enough in IPB terms. As a person who minored in psychology in college, I too believe I would be equipped to therapize this cast. Sure, I'd mostly just prescribe Getting Some Dick, because it seems to work wonders on these people's mental illnesses, but still.
Steph's latest project is Juth, an Outcast who I feel it's important to mention canonically gave at least one dude a handjob, because Ruby Dixon is an ally goddamn it. Juth is a single father with a victim complex simply begging for the love and affection of a bi queen, and indeed he gets it.
But not before a bunch of rampaging giant squidsnails (I'm pretty sure they're just an alien brand nautilus) destroy most of Icehome. This part rocks. More romance novels should include kaiju wrecking shit. Added to my enjoyment 10x.
Anyway, this one was fun. Thanks Ruby Dixon, Noted LBGT Ally. You're invited to pride.
It is IPB's 2 separate books in one, it is earthquake (or Earth shake) and Harlow & Rukh's stories mixed together. Now that's enough spoiler...just read the book.
