His wife, Heike, is also a writer and often works with her husband. She often comes up with the story ideas and therefore is generally credited as co-author. Their daughter, Rebecca, is also a writer.
Writing short stories since age 15, Hohlbein was first recognized as an author after sending in a manuscript he and his wife had written at a fantasy and science fiction writing contest in 1982. They won and their book, Märchenmond (English title: "Magic Moon"), was published by Ueberreuter Publishing, soon becoming a bestseller and winning several awards. It is one of their greatest successes till today.
Many of his more than 200 books are translated and published in many European countries as well as in South Korea. Yet for many years none of his works had been translated into English. In 2006, Magic Moon was translated into English and published in the United States.

This was the book that got me reading as a kid. I got this as a birthday present from an aunt and was originally disappointed, because I didn't like reading (What school had forced us to read was not good reads).
Then there was this summer-holiday day that was rainy, all my friends were away on vacation and my mother was hogging the (back then) only TV we had with some romantic bullsh*t and I started reading this book and had it finished in less than a week.
My mother was so stoked that she bought me the other two of the series, to keep me reading. What was difficult was the transition to other reading material that I would like after three books by the same author.
For a long time after I mostly read the German version of The Three Investigators (Die Drei ???), which had been continued in German ever since, though I have read a few of the originals since...
