R. Jacob Honeybrook is an independent fiction author. A former journalist, he brings true-life horror to his stories, while taking the reader on a journey through the human psyche.
Really enjoyed this story about an IT professional lead into temptation by a good looking demon called Caly. With her help he overcomes his mousy demeanor and treats his wife, her lover and his boss in a way many people dream about. Fast paced, scary details, gory at parts and interesting reference to myth. Kept me interested till the last page. Highly recommended stuff!
This one was such a fun ride. We follow Tristan—a guy stuck in a miserable job and an even worse marriage. His wife uses him, clearly hates him, and treats him like absolute garbage. And honestly? You can feel the tension building from the start.
Eventually, Tristan snaps… but here’s the kicker: is this a psychological break, or is something paranormal pulling the strings? That line gets blurry in the best way, and I loved that the story never gives you a clean answer.
I first came across Honeybrooks' work through Instagram, drawn in by his engaging posts and hilarious reels. He's quite the character!
Little did I know that behind them was a writer with immense talent, capable of crafting something as gripping and darkly exhilarating as Devils in the Night.
This novella was an absolute thrill ride—seductive, violent, and unrelenting in its exploration of the primal instincts lurking beneath the surface of everyday life.
Tristan's descent into chaos, guided by the enigmatic and captivating Caly, was both disturbing and hypnotic, and I couldn’t resist her. I was always looking forward to her appearing and wondering what she would subject to Tristan next.
The way honeybrook balances psychological horror with everyday living situations was nothing short of masterful storytelling, making it seem both RAW and VISCERAL.
Going beyond the plot, which was fueled by pure adrenaline, what truly stood out was his ability to create a tension fuelled atmosphere powered by temptation.
Every scene felt deliberate, every twist carried its own weight, and by the time I reached the end, I was left both satisfied and wanting more.
I’m incredibly glad I picked up Devils in the Night and even more excited to see what you write next.
This was a fun and twisted read! You truly felt for Tristan as he is such a kind and loving husband, it makes sense why he would want to give in to Caly's temptations. It made me cheer Tristan's deplorable actions and beg for more. I appreciate a bit of dark humour and Honeybrook delivered - I had to laugh at a certain situation Tristan found himself in his last hookup! I love a short read, and Honeybrook gives everything you could ever want.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Horror the way I like it! Hack that into pieces—LOVE it!”
Devils in the Night is a mischievously wicket and darkly seductive novella sprinkled with the perfect amount of humor, murder, and mayhem!
Honeybrook does an excellent job of creating a relatable character in Tristan Merriweather, an IT tech who’s wasting his life in a loveless marriage and dead-end job. That’s all about to change when a mysterious temptress shows up on the night shift.
Honeybrook creates a perfect storm through suspense, lustful intrigue, and good old-fashioned carnage. This is one rabbit hole any fan of the macabre or psychological horror will want to jump down headfirst!
Tristan Merriweather has been a pushover all of his life. His wife doesn't appreciate him and his boss has put him on the graveyard shift at work. He fantasises about how life could be different if only he were more assertive.
Alone in the office, he suddenly meets a colleague he hasn't seen before. She is friendly and helps him to discover his inner confidence but what price does he need to pay to finally take control of his life?
This was such a fun read. Tristan was a great character and seeing him go from being a doormat to Mr confident, it was clear things could only end badly... very badly indeed.
Be careful what you wish for because sometimes it might just come true!
This was a well written, fast-paced novella. The author packs a lot of emotion and story into the pages. If you like character driven stories with a full-circle arc, with a sharp decline this might be the story for you!
I devoured Devils in the Night in under an hour and let me tell you, I was hooked from page one. Poor Tristan. His life is a dumpster fire, his wife treats him like dirt, and now he’s stuck on the night shift. Just when he thinks it can’t get worse, in walks Caly and suddenly everything flips.
This story is wild, seductive, violent, and just the right amount of unhinged. Only 48 pages but it goes hard. If you’ve been curious about horror but don’t know where to start, this is the one. You’ll finish it needing a moment to process what the hell just happened, in the best way.
This was a chilling, gory little story. I can't believe how much happened in less than fifty pages.
Tristan isn't happy with his wife, nor his job, especially now he's been put on the night shift. However, on the night shift, he meets beautiful, enigmatic Caly who influences him to toughen up and sort his life out. Fans of mythology will enjoy this one for sure.
Devils in the Night definitely isn't for the faint hearted; the violence is pretty detailed.
Even if this story was novel length, I think I would've read it in one sitting, just to see what Caly would encourage Tristan to do next.
What’s it’s about: Tristan Merriweather’s life is meaningless. With his dead-end office job and horrible wife, Tristan doesn’t have much to live for. However, when he is forced to work the night shift, he meets an enigmatic co-worker name Caly, who encourages him to live out his primal urges. She introduces him to a world where he becomes the person he’s always wanted to be. However, this newfound life of excess could lead to his ultimate downfall. Inside every human is a caged animal waiting to break free.
This was such a fun and twisted quick read. A wild ride fueled by seduction, violence, and raw dark desires. Add in a touch of dark humor and it delivers everything you would want from a horror short story! I am excited to dig into what else Honeybrook has to offer.
This is a great, mysterious, erotic horror tale perfect for one sitting. Unique story and setup, intriguing characters including a classic temptress, and a dark ending that I'm still thinking about. I think Honeybrook's got some awesome horror in store for us in the future and I'm so pumped to see what he's cooking up next.
Synopsis: Late night encounters with a mysterious coworker lure a mild mannered husband into a wild world of debauchery and murder.
Thoughts: This story does a great job of painting its main character as a sympathetic figure (even to the point of making his earlier sins forgivable if not outright cathartic). There are intriguing hints of a wider world of supernatural horror here that I’d love to see explored in future tales. While the murders that occur are not as violently depicted as they could be, there’s still moments of gory dismemberment, so reader beware. Would recommend for fans of Vampire’s Kiss and the various iterations of Faust.
