The problem I have is the requirement to constantly reread parts of the previous 5 books …repeats of characters histories with a few changes. Robert thinks every reader is reading the overall story for the first time what ever book in the series he is reading. Find myself skipping whole italic chapters. Book 14 should be about 2000 pages if I ever get there
Understanding exactly how impactful the tragic death of Sam's son is to his overall character arc is completely fair. Being six books deep into the series makes having to read through that history again feel overly repetitive though. Feeling exactly like this during the previous instalments was already a minor issue but there was a genuine hope it would not feature heavily right at the start of this one. Appreciating that this context is incredibly important for anyone picking this up as a standalone novel makes total sense. Speaking purely from the experience of reading the series in order just highlights how tiresome that recap has become.
Moving past that repetitive start reveals a narrative that feels significantly more explicit in its description of violence. Not having fully cross-referenced this with earlier books does not change the strong feeling that the brutality has been dialled up a notch. Reading the specific scene where testicles were crushed and dealing with the graphic aftermath over the next few pages left a genuinely unwell feeling in the stomach. Hitting 48 years of age seems to have brought on a new level of squeamishness that makes digesting these brutal moments a lot harder than it used to be. Settling on a three-star rating reflects a solid continuation of the story that was ultimately hampered by repeating old trauma and leaning too heavily into stomach-churning gore.
Being a man of his word Sam Pope started his search for Alex so that she could be re-united with her family. After all she had saved his life! Finding her drew him into a ferocious bikers world who ruled a small town with iron will and fists to match. With twists and turns enough to make you dizzy, Sam realised he had not only found Alex but had stepped into and was emersed into a drug gang war. Fighting to save Alex was all that mattered, and did he fight. His body had been through worse up until he clashed with biker Edinson with a fist of steel. It was a new experience to me to cry over words in a book and I've read many that were potentially cry worthy. But this was Sam Pope lying helpless on the ground with Edinson towering over him and Sam reliving the pain of his son's death. Hearing Jamie angrily shouting 'Fight Daddy'. So yes I shed a tear.
I've enjoyed the Sam Pope books and have read one after another since I first discovered them. Not a biggie to some maybe but in some books Sam's dad is a major and in others he's a general. Continuity errors and grammatical errors pop up all too frequently, but they are enjoyable action packed reads with a good story.
Man of My Word is a nice twist from his previous books based in the UK, with it being set in the US. What I do like about the books is that although he's clearly a criminal, those on right side of the law go out of their way to help him. Which is the bigger story really that, sometime the justice system works in the favour of the criminals and without someone like Sam around to make things right, they get away with things, time and time again.
Two steps forward and one step back seems to be the style for this story. While it certainly fills in some of the gaps and answers questions the reader may have had about the characters, it gets a bit frustrating when you get to an exciting passage only to be thrown into the past again. There seems to be a lot of repetition of how we got from point A to point B. You want to yell: Get on with it, already!. The proof reader was again having an off day and had allowed one character's name to be used for an action that should have been another's.
What twists, turns and surprises The title could also be a comment on the author. He is a man of his word in creating another great read. Sam is twisted, turned, tumbled, tortured, tempted and entangled with drugs, the DEA, bikers and the Mexican Cartel. Every turn seems to confront Sam with some new trouble. Strange friends are made. Alex and Sam get to breathe again, or do they. Read this great follow-up story now!
I have enjoyed all of these books with Sam pope as the much loved controversial hero! If you are an adrenaline junkie then these are for you. Rather blood thirsty in parts but that hasn’t put me off! For now I have to go find my next good read, although it will be hard. Many thanks to Robert for his great plotting on behave of Sam. Here’s to your next best sellers!!
Good read, enjoyed the story, and pleasingly this was the first of the first of six books in the series that did not have text errors. Hooray the author has found a trustworthy editor. I’m immersed in the Sam Pope story, however when rating this particular book I have dropped a star because (spoiler alert) try as I may, I cannot work out how the mouth swabbing of Sykes and the swab then being placed into an evidence bag can lead to the authorities being conned into believing that the body or whatever remains of Sykes body, being that of Sam Pope’s. What am I missing here?

Agreeing with some other reader’s reviews, the continuous recapping to previous books within the series as well as the continued inventory of panic and scars make this very easy to read since a person can skim 25 to 30% of these later books. I agree the proofreaders could use some help, there are a few semantics issues as well as typos. As noted, the books are quick and easy to read, and the plots move pretty quickly.
I've been waiting for this Sam Pope book since I finished reading the previous one. Robert Enright is a talented author and I love his books. All the characters are "real" and I always eagerly anticipate the character development. I really want to know how Sam and the others get on in the future. Is there going to be another installment?
In hindsight I shouldn't have downloaded this as I read what the book was about. It didn't appeal to me reading a book with Hells Angels. I had to read it though as I'd read all the other books. It didn't grip me at all if I'm honest. It was too far fetched for Sam, and a bit rushed at the end
Sam Pope always keeps his word. A man of honor. He travels to America to help his close friend to reunite with her siblings. She has been put into an situation with a dishonorable DEA agent. Money is his motivator. What follows is a story of honor, respect and trust. Another stupendous read in this series!! My highest,!! Enjoyed immensely!!
If hero like Jack reacher took on sons of anarchy.
Lovely book, Sam pop is always a good read and it's very easy to pick up and follow this almost episodic story of Sam popes life I find myself wondering about the side characters and if Sam will find peace but also hoping for more justice at the same time.
Another great read from start to finish. I have really enjoyed reading every book. The action is non stop and it was almost impossible to put the book down. The good news is, I shall now read the next book in the series, No Way Back. A big thank you to the author, Robert Enright and from me a well deserved 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Again Sam did a wonderful trip to the east coast of the US only to be dragged into another gang problem. Sam wad able.make some friends which were able to assist in his trouble with the biker gang. Seems like he's always in the wrong place at the right. Another non stop thriller for sure.
An excellent book, but after reading 6 of them and knowing there are 9 more, things have to change dramatically. I’m on for reading number 7, as I’m intrigued as to see how Enright will grab my enthusiasm, but if it’s the same old story; then probably my last Sam Pope episode. Adrian.
Always love the story line, and then thread between each book. Now on book 7 so don't feel I need to keep reading what happened in books 1 to 6 though sometimes these bits of recall help to understand why Sam does what he does. If you are on book 7 like me, you know about his past and what has happened. Still very enjoyable. TV series ??
Wow what an action packed series - definitely violent and bloody but you can skim through that if you want to. I know the series keeps on going but this seems to be the end now that Sam Pope has fulfilled his promise to Alex Stone. You clouds stop reading here and few like you have reached a conclusion.

Gratuitous violence and strong storylines. Noses broken, teeth shattered, feet and calf muscles crunched. Fortunately these "boys own" sessions can be skipped. Triumph of the goodish over the definitively evil is a worthy theme - probably.
I received an ARC of this book, this is my unbiased and voluntary review. A fitting continuation of the series, lots of action, violence, corruption and strong moral stances. Everything that the previous books have led us to expect from a Sam Pope book.
Sam is off to America to keep a promise to Alex who is mixed up with a drug ring of motorcycle riders. As he finds Alex there is a rival gang trying to take out the death riders and Sam's priority is rescuing Alex. Fast paced action packed great reading thanks
Sam had to fulfil a promise to go back and help Alex as well as get her siblings back, first he had to find her. A painful journey full of lots of obstacles but he managed to keep to his promise.
Another fast paced action packed pleasure. Sam Pope makes other hero's look ordinary! London, New York it doesn't matter he will always get the job done and do the right Thing!
My favorite of the series so far It was exciting to read and the description of Sam's journey through my home state of South Carolina. In fact, most of his time was spent in place only 30 miles from my home. Loved every part of this series.
So much of these books are taken up repeating the same backstory. It’s getting stale. Any emotion I had initially, is gone as the same story of repeated. I may skip the rest of the books in this series.
Yet another superb book from Robert Enright in the Sam Pope series . Im seriously hooked . Full of action on every page .. there are some really gory bits in thos one and I loved it! But also there were a few bits that gave me a lump in my throat .. absolutely perfect !
Another excellent story in the Sam Pope series. As always a great cast of characters and an excellent storyline. A satisfying and an appropriate ending.Looking forward to reading more by Robert.
Loved the storyline, but was disappointed that the author needed to spend time repeating the previous books headlines it wasn’t like the reader could have forgotten if like me you read the previous books.
Enright is getting better and to me this was his best overall effort yet. He does repeat too much information from past books still but the storyline expanded in this book and it was a welcome addition/change. Hopefully this development continues. This story was very solid if not outstanding.
This is a great series and this book was no exception. Plenty of action, a great story and terrific characters. It is not for the faint-hearted with quite a lot of violence, but not gratuitous violence. Looking forward to the next book.
