Growing up with eccentric materialist parents, who left him in the care of his grandfather for a job overseas, Zhang Heng had learned to adapt and be unfettered by the oddities and challenges in life. But he would soon learn the baffling truth about the world he thought he knew, when one day at midnight, time froze and he found himself in a world so quiet and still it was deafening. That night, he discovered that he had 24 hours more than everybody else and thus, marked the beginning of his adventures. The mysteries surrounding his newfound ability only deepened when a strange old man claimed to have given Zhang Heng that ‘gift of time’ and recruited the young man to participate in a cryptic ‘life-changing’ game on his behalf. Little did Zhang Heng know that accepting those terms meant embroiling himself in many versions of reality and exposing himself to the hidden secrets of the world—a decision he could never undo.
"and everyone began cheering for him" is one of the biggest issues with this book. The author tries way too hard to make the protagonist look cool even if the characterization and tone suffers for it. It’s more than that though, the author seems to genuinely believe that his audience are young children or idiots. This is just one particularly annoying aspect of his overemphasized and overdramatized way of writing. It’s all the more annoying because the author doesn’t write this way consistently (or I would have dropped this earlier), he just randomly throws away logic to achieve this.
Another big issue with the story is that it gets worse as it goes on. The first two stories were well written and somewhat interesting. Afterwards the story devolves into bad fanfiction or pure plagiarism. I haven’t seen the Black Sails tv show, but apparently the 154 chapter pirate arc followed the plot of it in exacting detail. Almost none of those chapters were actually plot relevant, it was mostly tedious to read. This trend continues for the most part, and every aspect of the story suffers due to the author attempting to mimic other creative works. I lost all expectations for consistency and story structure after a certain point.
The protagonist is a calm, passive (not cautious), selectively plot armored, Dora the Explorer used to lead readers into a world of bad logic and artificial suspense. He has different personalities, values, and intelligence levels throughout the story so it’s difficult to describe him as anything more than that.
The biggest issue with the translation is that the translator loves to use 'fancy' words that they don’t entirely know the meaning of. Far too many things are jarring or just plain wrong. As if they’re using a thesaurus rather than a dictionary to figure out what words mean. Also they editor doesn’t appear to edit even obvious mistakes. Despite this, the translation is pretty good and gets better later on.
One great thing is that this is written by a rare author who realizes that misogyny, stereotyping, and other prejudices don’t belong in a good story. Despite the inconsistent characterizations, people generally behave as individuals rather than a group of superficial ideas. It’s almost weird how ‘progressive’ this is compared to most other novels on NU.
Real fun concept and the novel has great development mainly in terms of the MC and him developing different skills. The novel is very similar to world hopping novels however with a clear focus on history and mythology tho more on the history side when it comes to the different arcs. Some arcs are clearly better than others shoutout to the alien invasion and sherlock arc while others will drag on and you can just skip them. Give it a chance if you're a fan of history and have a lot of time to spare.
It's like a Solo Leveling type of story where people with powers get sent into dungeons to acquire powers and items with magic and future tech. The author had the setting in history and folk lore, then sneakily incorporated a lot of mythology into the latter half of the book. But other than that, the details to story and the writing was very smooth. Other than a few grammar mistakes, I loved the book. Or maybe 35 books, it's nearly 1500 chapters.
When it comes to chinese webnovels, you either get absolute dogshit, or something that could be indicted into the Fiction Hall of Fame. This leans closer to the latter option, but isn't quite there yet.
...or maybe im delirious and delusional who knows!
8/10
p.s. i read this when the translation wasnt finished, so i kinda had to wait for a few weeks to finish the book, also another note this book has a manga?????? (manhua) very weird
Pretty good reading values. I read it on webnovel. Initially, I read it to find out how the authors solved adds the extra 24 hours because it's an weird concept. And yeah, I loved it, found something relatively fresh, compared to other wuxia novels I read.
the character has a cheat ability for his time is 48 hours a day, thus when he send to the alternate universe to engage in the life game, The time there became multiple and thus he could practice and learn more skills.
